Red Raider Gridiron | Leong Impresses and Kicking Game a Concern
Playmaker Leong: FWST's Dwain Price writes that Texas Tech may have found it's playmaker in WR Lyle Leong and head coach Tommy Tuberville has some good things to say about Leong:
"Lyle's got a lot of tenacity, he loves to fight for the ball, and the one thing that he does as a receiver is he uses his body well," Tuberville said. "He can turn into the defender and use his body and go up for the ball.
"I told him one day, I said, 'You're as close to a guy that I've ever seen that worked as much as Michael Irvin did.' Michael Irvin was the first guy on the practice field and the last guy to leave, and Lyle's a lot like that."
Kicking Game a Concern: DT's Jon Arnold writes that the kicking game is a concern. This is a good op-ed piece by Arnold and he recalls when the kicking game almost kicked Texas Tech in the rear:
But this problem isn’t new. During Tech’s 2008 season, the Red Raiders nearly dropped a game against Nebraska when Corona’s extra point was blocked in overtime. Luckily for the Red Raiders, Jamar Wall’s interception allowed them to escape with the 6-point win.
Hance Asks For Better Behavior From Students: LAJ's Matthew McGowan writes that Chancellor Kent Hance is asking the Texas Tech students to behavior better:
"I’m here asking," he said. "I’m not here telling. I’m just asking you to help me out on this."
Hance reminded students that many of the legislators he is courting for help with the university’s tier-one ambitions frequently attend games in Lubbock.
"It depreciates your degree," he said. "I’m working hard for tier-one status, and we’re getting there. I want representatives and I want senators that are visitors to think well of our student body."
I'm interested to hear what you think about this.
Recruiting Stuff: Texas Tech commit and current Odessa High player, RB Bradley Marquez (DTN Profile) had an unbelievable night last night as he had 22 carries for 376 yards and 6 touchdowns over Amarillo Tascosa:
A senior who has verbally committed to play at Texas Tech, Marquez scored on runs of 4, 69, 29, 75, 42 and 50 yards and rushed for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns in the second half alone.
. . . Amarillo High and Texas Tech commit DL James Castleman (DTN Profile) will take on Rider tonight their head coach has some good things to say about Castleman:
James Castleman, a senior nose guard, has already committed to Texas Tech. He is listed at 6-4, 255, but Garfield says he is "273 and can run."
"He is one of the best nose guards in the state of Texas. We will use a center and a guard on him and also keep a running back in the mix to make sure we’ve got him covered," the Rider coach said.
Game Predictions: Rock M Nation's Bill C. BTBS fancy computer numbers figures that Texas Tech wins by 33 points and Bill's computer's picks went 24-13-2 (64%) last week . . . Rivals.com's Mike Huguenin predicts every game this week . . . ESPN's David Ubben predicts this week's games . . . DMN's Mike Graham's headline makes you think he's predicting the wrong game . . .
New Mexico Lobo Links: DT's Mike Graham writes that the Red Raiders know it will be a brand new game on Saturday. Here's DT Donald Langley:
"It’s a brand new ballgame," Langley said. "It’s their house, their first home game. So we have to bring our A-game no matter what because it’s going to be a great game."
And Tuberville talks about the team's routine:
"We’ll leave (Lubbock) as late as possible I don’t like for players to miss classes," Tuberville said during Monday’s media conference. "We’ll fly in and get on buses (Friday), go to the hotel. We’ll treat it like we’re at home. We’ll eat at a certain time. They’ll all have their same roommates they roomed with the week before and the same meeting times. Obviously, things will change a little bit because it’s a night game. We’ll let them sleep later on Saturday morning because of the later kickoff and we’ll have a few more meetings during the day. But it doesn’t change a whole lot."
. . . LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that even though new Mexico head coach Mike Locksley is controversial his players still like him . . . ABQjournal's Greg Archuleta writes that the Oregon loss is old news for the Lobos:
"We've got to make sure we take care of the present," Locksley says. "We can't let any part of last week blend into this week because it'll create a failure for us. Our players understand that. Having watched the (Oregon) film with them and the embarrassment that we faced last week, they now see that's what happens when we don't have the attention to detail."
. . . ABQjournal's Rick Wright writes that the season isn't over . . .
Big 12 and National Links: I mean to mention a couple of national writers that did rank Texas Tech in the BlogPoll, the first being Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton, who ranks exclusively on resume at that time, has Texas Tech at #18 (Missouri at #10 and Iowa St. at #14, with no Nebraska Oklahoma or Texas, since they didn't beat anyone of note) and Football Outsider's Brian Fremeau thinks that Texas Tech is the #23 team . . . Rivals.com's Olin Buchanan has a solid preview for week #2 in the Big 12 . . . ESPN's David Ubben has ten things to watch in week two . . .

I would have to say that the current students
need to at least respect OUR school and not screw up the Fight Song. As for the Raider Power chant during the SMU alma mater, I’m thinking if the chant started BEFORE their song, well then its them that are being rude.
Someone mentioned yesterday that a good portion of our fan base has no experience other than the last few very winning years. I guess I would have to say, that having been around during the Dockery Experience and some of the other “wonderboys” we have hired, that we might need to be just a little more humble, at least until we see what we have. Its kinda like running for a touchdown and just flipping the ball to the ref, lets act like we have been there before.

Those students and other disruptive fans
always wanting water and stuff.
They should have more respect than that. We might have a senator at the game.

If I was a student today
and had paid $5 for tap water after standing in line for an hour at the game, I might be a little upset.
Then, my esteemed chancellor comes out today and asks me not to embarrass him in front of all his friends, eight days before the biggest game of the year.
If I was a student today, I’d be designing some T-shirts to sell.
Shirts with a few personal thoughts, maybe a picture or two, and of course, red.

Hance needs to learn...
That asking the Tech fan base to do anything never works. It’s like a single Cowboy trying to round up a herd of running buffalo.
If Tech fans want to be rude, then let them be rude. Do I like it? No.
And I certainly won’t ever behave like that at any football game because I’m more interested in watching the game than booing the opponent.
That being said, I couldn’t help but laugh when Hance said, “It depreciates your degree.”
I wish I could respond to him and say, “Kent Hance depreciates my degree more than the whole crazy Tech student body combined.”
I think i’ve gone into great detail before. The “butchering” of the fight song becoming commonplace was helped by the administration’s decision to outlaw tortillas. It’s not the 1:1 cause, but as one form of minor rebellion became dangerous to do in a game, the other became quite popular.
God help us if
those rowdy fans start throwing catfish
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
of note, i just emailed chancellor@ttu.edu asking him how he feels about that theory. we’ll see what the response is.
Maybe we could strike a deal of some sort. Bring back the tortillas and we will consider not doing so much hoodrat stuff with our friends at the game.

just a little bit of a whole weekend with no video games or somethin’
Thanks for the reminder
I sent Hance an angry diatribe this morning. If they match my e-mail address to my Red Raider Club account they might just cancel my season tickets. Comparing his Dimmitt accent to characters in The Grapes of Wrath might have been going a bit too far. But I feel much better.
If I’m not mistaken, the Big XII outlawed the tortillas and we actually had several 15-yd penalties called on us for this when the rule went in to effect. I may be wrong, but that’s what my memory says.
I get it, if you have an eight team conference, you can throw oranges, but
a twelve team conference cannot throw tortillas….hmmmm, how about a ten team conference…..any rules for that?

I'll admit
that this could be related, but it still doesn’t excuse the students’ behavior. I know you are not condoning it (well I think you aren’t), but there is not a whole lot that the school could do that would justify the lyric change.
Tortillas....
That’s actually a Big 12 rule, and not a Tech rule. At the formation of the Big 12, it was decided that throwing tortillas is demeaning to Hispanics.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Sep 10, 2010 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t think that was the reasoning behind the rule, but who knows. May have been. Sorry, didn’t see your post on the Big XII rule before I chimed in. Didn’t read far enough.
I could understand it if we were throwing
shingles or concrete, but tortillas? c’mon.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
I'll throw shingles and concrete if that's what we decide on
But I’m not carrying them into the stadium. I want them waiting for me at my seat when I arrive.
Yeah it's a stupid rule.
Pretty much one of the Big 12 higher ups didn’t like it so they thought of some reason off the cuff to ban them.

Sportsmanship please people. It has to start somewhere. I hate it when I go to the Tech games in Austin and they drown out our school song. Why can’t we just cheer for our team without being jerks to the other team?
I agree too...
I really dislike it when I am watching a game on tv and I hear the students chanting “bull sh*$”. That’s great that we as fans are passionate but there is a better way to show our passion that sounding like idiots on tv.

Agree completely
No reason for yelling profanity at the games. Get excited and have a good time but use good judgement with what comes out of your mouth. I’m yelling at almost every game but I try and keep it civilized. As a parent I don’t appreciate some drunk loser dropping the “F” bomb in front of my kids.

My dad had Cowboys season tickets in the 60’s & there was a woman sitting behind him that cussed like a sailor. Sure it was embarrassing for Dad and I, but what are you going to do? I guarantee you it’s not just students cussing in Jones Stadium on Saturdays.
I'm with you
I’m certainly in the group that has been over-served at games before. But not to the point that I’m gonna drop the f-bomb, esp in a family setting.
It would be nice to be able to take the kids to a game and not have to worry about someone screaming f-this and f-that.

F-Bomb F-Bomb F-BOMB
I’ll admit it. I’ve used an F-bomb at games before. Now that I’m a little older I have some remorse for those actions. I also agree that chanting BS during the game sounds really classless on TV. However, I have no problem with Raider Power chants drowning out anything the opposing team’s band is playing as long as it’s during the game as opposed to before or after it. THAT’S HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!
I get sick to my stomach when the UT fans come to Lubbock and start their chant of “TEXAS FIGHT”. IMO there’s is no way we should let that happen in the JONES and it should definitely be drowned out by “RAIDER POWER” or TEXAS TECH".
In summary, nu cursing but chant “TEXAS TECH” or “RAIDER POWER” as often and as loud as possible.
Agree with Hance (boy I hate that)
But on this topic, he’s right. I get soooo tired of having that A&M goal post incident replayed on TV every year. We don’t need that kind of exposure, but recognize these people are kids in life. That’s not meant to be a catch-all excuse, but coupled with a lillte booze, bad things will happen sometimes.
Our fans can do better.
I got sick of apologizing for the goalpost incedent so I don’t anymore. I basically just say, it happened a long time ago, you weren’t there, deal with it. I know people that were actualy there and suspended (i was not on the field) and they are great people that went on to be productive citizens just like everyone else. Sometimes liquored up 19 year olds do dumb things. However, the last time we tore down a goal post before that the University promoted the pictures and stuff. So its not like they didn’t have free reign to tear down goalposts. It just got out of hand with where they took it. And Aggies don’t get a pass b/c they didn’t have to not move and fight back. If you think someone is behaving poorly and a moron then don’t provoke them!!!! Get over it Aggies.
I might add...
some of the worst games I’ve ever attended were at Kyle Field. Colorado is by far the worst and Nebraska the absolute best place visit for a game.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
It’s highly possible that my roommate and I went back up to the stadium after that game, found one of the uprights, went to Wal Mart, bought a hack saw, and chopped it into foot long pieces to give to people on our dorm floor.

Yes you're right.
The Kyle Field experience is not cool for a visitor from the opposing team.
In fact, one of the last Tech home games I attended, I had an A&M fan (older lady, around 65 years old) who was flat out obnoxious and rude. Glad we won the game that year. I was polite at the end and she was real nasty.
Told her that it was poetic justice that her team performance and her manners had one thing in common – pitiful.
She didn’t get any nicer after that.
I don’t think all Aggies are like that lady. At least I hope not.
Maybe this is a good time to invite everyone one more time........
To go to the CU game. A group of a dozen of us will be going…as we go to one road game a year. I understand that it wont’ be as hospitable as Lincoln and Lawrence (last two years)….but its the last road trip there and needs to be crossed off.

New tradition… bands of Tech fans attend all away games and throw tortillas on the kickoff…
and the home team gets penalized 15 yards… or, is the rule that only Tech gets penalized if anyone throws tortillas?

Hance can shut his trap!
Hance has already embarrassed the university more than any kids at a football game could. The students don’t do anyhting different than students at ut, a&m, or any other school do. Kids are going to be kids, and the more you draw attention to their behavior, the more they are going to do it. Especially when everyone hates you Hance. Not to mention when you are up in a sutie you have very little idea of what is going on in the stands. Suck it Hance!
Hance shouldn't have to ask
I have a real problem with the students butchering the fight song. It just REALLY rubs me the wrong way. The Raider Power chant during their school song doesn’t bother me as much. It blows my mind on a regular basis how students can do that to our own tradition/song and think it is the way to go. And I’m not some old guy that wasn’t around for it… I was a freshman in 2002, and was still around to here that travesty start in the stands. All I can do is sing the right words as loudly as possible. Still embarrassing as a student body though.
Hance is a blowhard!
How about he doesn’t trash our University in the press with his comments on Leach and the way our football program was “run”. How about he worries about tier one and not the fight song. I still don’t get how they relate… A&M says “hell” and “ass” in their chants and no one cares. They have Tier I status.
That being said, as a student I never sang the alternate words and I never do now. I think its stupid and they should stop. As far as yelling during the other school song, I’m not a fan of that either but what can we do. 18 and 19 year olds in a group of 12K cannot be controlled.
And yes the Tortilla throwing was a HARMLESS tradition that was stopped because some poor aggie said he was hit by a frozen one. Yeah frozen in 95 degree weather in Lubbock with all the ice we have around…. give me a break. Even if it did happen, do we stop a great tradition for one bafoon?! NO!
Make a deal to bring back tortillas (safely) and get rid of the alternate fight song. If he hears the fights song wrong then the tortillas go. Its simple. Clearly Hance has never been a teacher….
I think this request makes more of an impact when it comes from the coaches
Mack Brown did some promos on sportsmanship a few years back that ran on their jumbo tron. Not sure how much of an impact they had but I think most students will listen to the head coach on how to behave at a game before they’ll listen to the chancellor. Especially in our case.
I agree
I agree with your suggestion about the Coach making this request. After visiting LBK and going to the SMU game this past weekend you can really notice the changes Tuberville is trying to make. As JdeeTTU mentioned though, I don’t think Tuberville is in a position to make that request from the students yet. Maybe until he can get more wins under his belt they should think about getting Batch and a few other respected players do some promos on sportsmanship.

No impact
Hance won’t have any impact with the students. Chanting during the other teams fight song during the game??? Get over it. Who cares.
Chanting during the other teams School Song, that’s just wrong. Show some sort of respect.
What is unacceptable is changing the words to the fight song. Why do that anyway? I was long gone with this became a trend and I don’t get it. It doesn’t really add anything to of value. Actually, it doesn’t really makes any sense if you think about it. But Hit’em, Wreck’em Tx Tech actually has some meaning. Are these students asking the players to bend over the other guys on the field??? Ok, maybe a little over the line there…
The only way this changes is for groups (large groups) of students at the game to call out anyone who signs the alternate version. If enough do that, eventually it will stop.

I’m pretty sure that having the fans not curse in the stands is not what will propel us to tier 1… surely there are more pressing matters that should be addressed… and the students ARE this university, if they want to change lyrics to the fight song then who cares, it’s their fight song… and don’t be so upset about loud curse words at a football game, i would suggest not sitting your children next to the student section if you are easily offended, problem solved
It is not just their fight song, it is our's as alum too
And I don’t like what they’ve done to it. They are changing history/tradition and doing it in a disrespectful way. It makes us all look bad.
then i would encourage you to sing the fight song however you like, and allow the students to sing it however they like
I realize ‘opinions are immunity from being told you are wrong’, but you are wrong on this one batmantt. The students are the university. BUT not just the students that are there now. You mean all the alums on DTN that graduated 5-30 years ago no longer have anything to do with the University? The young should respect the old enough to follow with the traditions that have been in place since the school fielded a team (or wrote the fight song whenever it was).

I agree it’s the alums as well, but as an alum i don’t have any problem with it… if you don’t accept the change then don’t do it, it’s that simple
Bad logic.
First, I disagree with you. Depending on ticket availability, I may not have a choice but to sit by the students. It’s not as though I’m taking them to JPat’s or the Oyster Bar or fill-in-the-blank bar. If that were the case, so be it. But we’re talking about the Jones. So I think it is fair to expect some constraint. I’m not expecting there to be zero cursing at the game, I’m not that naive. Just want to keep it PG-13 with the kids around.
That said, students or anyone else can feel free to sing the fight song however they want. But I’m also going to feel free to stand up and call them out for dropping f-bombs.

TCU isn't tier 1

is actually a problem everywhere… it is not even remotely unique to Tech, not is it so bad at Tech that it stands out above other universities.
Just saying…
Of course it's a problem everywhere, except maybe Nebraska
But wouldn’t it be nice if we could all cheer for our teams in a positive manner without cussing and demeaning the other teams? These are students playing…kids…
Positive change has to start somewhere…
They're (mostly) over the age of 18...
that means they’re adults too.
I’m not disagreeing with you about the change that needs to happen (I too think it should be toned down somewhat, although not totally), but I’ve never really got why people still call college aged students “kids”.

Kids
I think if you are willing to go to a football game where there are families with young children all over the place and scream the F-bomb at the top of your lungs instead of the proper lyrics for your school fight song you fall under the category of ‘kid’ whether you are 18 or 48. I call college kids ‘kids’ because they still have a LOT of growing up to do. Most are there via mommy and daddy’s money and have no responsibility in the world except to pass their classes and scream obscenities at public sporting events. Once they have a job and are a contributing member of society I’ll be happy to label them as ‘adults’.
Sure, cheer for Tech all you want, but the stuff during the other school’s alma mater or fight song is absurd. You know we’d be all up in arms if it happened to us on the road. I’ve been to 20-30 road games over the years and not once do I recall the other team’s fans doing this.
So, since everyone else does it, according to you, it’s okay if we do it? For once, I’d love Tech to be known for rising above. Just once.
Not true
Talk to friends from other schools. Texas Tech is universally regarded as the #1 group of classless fans in the Big XII. I say that not as an accusation but rather as a lament because I’m one of those fans – not one of the classless ones but a fan, nonetheless.
The only way to change that is for us, as a school and as fans to change our behavior – and to encourage other TTU fans to do the same.
The problem is not universally Tech’s but the infestation in Jones Stadium is severe – and much more so than at most other schools. I liked Blackbeard’s earlier analogy of “let’s act like we’ve been in the endzone before.”
If we let the scoreboard do the talking for us and we win with humility, we will be the envy of all. If we continue to yell, B.S. at every call with which we disagree and change OUR OWN FIGHT SONG for the pointless reason of injecting profanity, we will continue to be referred to around the Big XII and elsewhere as “Tech-tards”.

Is this
because of “we will F’ing kick your a$$”? at the end of the fight song? Or are there MORE naughty words that Hance has his knickers in a knot over?
if that is it, someone needs to tell him to have a lithium lifesaver, and chill the F out.

Hance's comments have me confused.
If he does not want TTU sport fans to be like Tier One school sport fans….why is he persuing the goal ????

It's all a big circle, TallMike.
like Duck, Duck, Goose.
If we can get the students to sit down and be quiet, then we will quickly be granted Tier 1 status.
As soon as that happens, we can take the muzzles off of those nasty students and let them go bat shit crazy. Like the other Tier 1 schools.

You won't ever be able to make me
understand or accept demeaning our fight song.
On the other hand, I have no problem changing the words to the ut fight song.

My boss was heading to Austin on a company recruiting trip this week
I proudly held up my hook ‘em horns sign & sang ’I’ve been working on the railroad…" to him. I’m sure he loved that.
So I'm not the only one who hears that when their band starts playing?
I know I wrote about it in one of the Belltower Newsletters, but I’ve always heard “I’ve been working on the railroad” and not the eyes of Texas.
Please tell me you’ve heard it too. I worry about myself sometimes. I’m just not right.

Maybe you sit in front of me in section 119
Because I sing the traditional folk song as loud as I can whenever UT comes to town & plays it. They never seem to reach the Dinah won’t you blow, dinah won’t you blow part which is my favorite. What’s up with that?
just plain rude on their part
We’ll be in sec 121 next weekend.

I agree we need to honor our university with our passion and spirit, not demean it with bad language or violence.
OU might have something to say about that......

I will admit
to not getting out of my mind crazy about the word change, but would if I am there with my son on the 18th and it is really noticeable. The roadtrip to Lawrence two years ago was crazy. Those fans are truly coold, we met 100’s of people and not one douchebag in the bunch. They couldn’t have been any nicer and they had their band go through the bars at 11-12 Friday night and play the fight song…..that was cool. I would hope we are more like that than OU.

Fight song...
The problem is that half of the people in the student section don’t even know the words to the real fight song. I think the university needs to take some steps in educating the student body on our real traditions and not those made by the drunk idiots before us.
Yes, it would be helpful for the university to help educate the students - no pun intended
But here’s another thought – how about the students taking some initiative and learning for themselves? A few clicks on the internet will do it. I could say more but won’t. In the interest of being helpful, here are are the words:
Texas Tech Fight Song
Fight, Raiders, Fight! Fight, Raiders, Fight!
Fight for the school we love so dearly.
We’ll hit’em high, we’ll hit’em low.
We’ll push the ball across the goal,
Tech, Fight! Fight!
We’ll praise your name, boost you to fame.
Fight for the Scarlet and Black
We will hit’em, we will wreck’em.
Hit’em! Wreck’em, Texas Tech!
And the Victory Bells will ring out.
written by, Carroll McMath
30 Years I've been singing this wrong
I though it was “You’ll hit ‘em high, You’ll hit ‘em low, You’ll push the ball across the goal, Tech fight fight”.
I don't care for the mangled version of the fight song... but I couldn't care less about what Hance has to say about it...
Get a different messenger… maybe Chief Tubs… he could put another notch on his holster…
