New Mexico Week
MONDAY SMU Post Game Thoughts
TUESDAY What We Think We Know
WEDNESDAY Keys to the Game
THURSDAY Five Questions
FRIDAY Prediction Time

Make your prediction for the game. What will happen, who will lead the offense and the defense and predict the final score.

Synopsis of the Game | This game shouldn't be close and I don't think it will.  New Mexico has been a bad team for a while and this should be a statement game for Texas Tech.  If a statement isn't made on Saturday, then I'm worried.  I think Texas Tech is a much better team than New Mexico, although I do expect New Mexico to be better.  I'm thinking that the run defense and run offense make huge improvement over last week and OL coach Moore gets some things worked out.  And defensively, watch out for DT Bobby Agoucha.  He only saw a few snaps against SMU, but if he gets into shape, he could be a real difference maker along the line as he was crushing the SMU offensive line, he just didn't get many plays.

Offensive MVP | WR Tramain Swindall

Defensive MVP | DE Scott Smith

Final Score | New Mexico Lobos 12, Texas Tech Red Raiders 56

Damned uppity Red Raiders. Don’t they know they are supposed to be like Baylor & be an easy win on the schedule of the real teams in Austin & College Station?

Areas we need Improvement:
The defensive line had better figure out to stop the run this week. Next week is fast approaching and things will get a whole lot more difficult. Special teams and O-line need to realize they have a job to do.

We better run the ball not just well, but “VERY WELL” and continue the solid passing game and no folding in the 4th qtr or bring back the sand pits.

It's not just the running plays that didn't work against SMU, it's the kind of running plays we used

Somebody needs to realize that with the line splits narrowed the RB’s need to run outside. There is nothing up the middle on obvious running plays. The spread offense isn’t built to feed the ball to Emmitt Smith 25 times a game with Daryl Johnson as lead blocker.

by mbrown603 on Sep 10, 2010 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you suggesting we pitch the ball and get our playmakers in space rather than running handoff left or handoff right????

"I like to think of myself as a one man wolfpack."

by Remington870 on Sep 10, 2010 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

PlaymakerS in space - plural

Last week there was one playmaker being looked at all day. If UT shuts him down where will Potts throw to? I hope Brown is stressing distribution this week. Even Crabtree got less than half of the passes thrown his way at the peak of his production freshman year.

by mbrown603 on Sep 10, 2010 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Agree

we can’t have Potts throwing to the open man (who actually catches the ball by the way). What will the neighbors think?

Don’t forget though…in the words of TT, “it was a great day for Texas Tech football” last Sunday.

The best play we showed was the end around to McCroy. It almost looked like an option. Sadly, most of our handoffs looked like the UT zone read play but SMU knew there was no way Potts was going to keep the ball. If he had, it would have been an easy 5 yards, even for him.

Yeah, we can’t have Potts throw the ball to one of his non-baby handed receivers….

Analysis of last year

Here are the stats for Potts throwing to Leong last year:

ND: D. Lewis (8 receptions/146 yds; 1 TD); Leong (4 receptios/ 55 yds)
Potts: 405 yds; 2 TD; 2 Int
Tech W 38-13

Rice: Leong (9 receptions/117 yds; 3 TDs); Swindall (6 rec/ 123 yds; 2 TDs)
Potts: 456 yds; 7 TD
Tech W 55-10

Texas: Leong (6 rec/ 80 yds; 2 TDS); Swindall (5 rec/67 yds; 1 TD); Britton (8 rec/69 yds); Torres (7 rec/ 59 yds)
Potts: 420yds; 3 TD; 1 INT
Tech L 24-34

Houston : Torres (6 rec/ 90 yds); D Lewis (6 rec/53 yds); Swindall (5 rec/38 yds, 1 TD); Leong (2 rec/ 11 yds)
Potts: 321 yds; 1 TD
Tech L 28-29

A&M: Torres (8 rec/ 128 yds, 1TD); D Lewis (5 rec/51 yds); Swindall (5 rec/45 yds); Leong (2 rec/ 15 yds)
Potts: 310 yds; 2 TD; 2 INT
Tech L 30-52

Baylor: Zou (7rec/ 92 yds); Leong (6 rec/58 yds; 2 TDs)
Potts: 269 yds; 2 TD; 1 Int
Tech: W 20-13

Similar trend follows in other games too. Leong wasn’t found open very much after the Texas game and Potts struggled to find an open player in the end zone. The exception was the OU game, where Batch rushed for 2 TDs.

Off MVP = Batch – Run game will be focus
Def MVP = Bront Bird with a crapload of tackles

Score: TTU: a lot
             NM: not many

I’d like to see Sticks get some gametime in the 2nd qtr and then maybe get more reps in mop up duty. Not in effort to cause controversy, I’m still fine with Potts as starter. But I think it would be good to get Sticks some playing time in the game when it matters and not just to go run reps when we are up by a lot.

My Predictions

I agree that the run game will be an area on which to concentrate. We will attempt to run the ball and run the ball some more. I think Jeffers may still be hurt??? Gasp! maybe even as much as 40% of the time. I predict Potts will NOT have more than 50 pass attempts. Not even if you add in Sheffield in mop up duty. I dont expect to see Sticks unless we’re up by 35 pts.

I predict our defensive will have a field day playing 2’s and 3’s in the 2nd half. The final score will include NM scoring 21 points….seven field goals. Less if they get all uppity and feel they need to go for one and make a statement on which they are turned back.

Offensive MVP: Batch (I predict he has a career game)
Defensive MVP: Scott Smith (I agree with Seth here. I think we give up quickly on the idea that Aundray Barr can rush the QB)

Score:
Pirates of the Plains: 52
Lobos of the Turquoise Jewelry State: 18

big win

Tech will come out of the gate hot lighting it up in the first half. Potts goes off and all the mistakes from last week get tuned up. 49 first half points. Sticks gets some mop up duty and the defense shuts down NM.

OMVP Detron Lewis who finally has his big game 3TDs

DMVP Davis & Duncan forcing a combined 5 turn overs.

Finial score 70 – 7 Tech

by ST04 on Sep 10, 2010 10:27 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

The 2-deep will play

Unlike last week, when TT admitted that he didn’t rotate the 2s in much because he was afaid we might lose, I think he will use this game to practice what he preached during 2-a-days: everyone on the 2-deep will see significant minutes, lost of rotating in and out. Since this will be the first time we have done this, I expect some goof-ups that will keep the win margin down a little. However, other than an occasional goof-up, we will look a lot sharper this week.
Score: TTU 42; NM 10
P.S. I expect Bront B. to play much better. I think (hope) that his tentative play last week was due to first-game-at-this-position jitters. His comments this week indicate that he realized that he messed up by worrying too much about making mistakes rather than being the aggressive player we knew last year.

Centex prediction:

 Raiders: 63
Lobos : 19
MVP Off: Potts 45 of 56; 400 yards 5 x TD’s
Def MVP: Ford ( 3 picks) and Duncan 3 sacks- again.
I agree with Colonel 71 lots of Raider defensive rotations just because I don’t think NM Coach Lockley will risk trying to run any kind of hurry up i.e. he wants max execution and understanding from his team Espicially no loose balls. On the drive back from Lubbock XM had the Coach Leach and Jack Arute show on: Leach said when you get blown out (i.e. the Oregon game), step back and start doing the things you do best. Just do that to regroup your team. So I’d expect we see a bunch of Lobos dives, sweeps & short out routes. Taking time off the clock, speed up the game in order to limit the NASCAR from building a tidal wave on them. On special teams I think the Lobos take lots of chances. Wouldn’t be surprised if they ran a reverse on a punt/ kick off or 2.
Finally this could easily top 95 -100 plays likeTortilla said above..

outlook for the Red Raiders after last weeks game. Last week I stated my hunch was that Tech was a strong contender for the BIG XII title this year. My hunch now: Tech is a weak contender for the title. The Texas game will provide better prognostication.

If had to guess its looking like we could see drop off in the Raiders total/average point per game. Nobody have a meltdown. Say one score less per game from the traditional 5 year average..

Out on a limb here

I predict coach focuses on the running game.
I predict coach practices rotating players in and out.
I predict 85-90 plays in the NASCAR offense.
I predict another practice quarterback sneak.
I predict somebody scores from a kickoff or punt return.
I predict Tech defense gets no less than 3 sacks and 1 int.
I predict Sticks takes over sometime during the second half.
Potts / Sticks will easily combine for more than 400 yards.
Batch / Stevens will easily combine for more than 125 yards.
I predict Tech scores about 49 points.
Hopefully we can get the field goal units some practice.
Defense better learn how to stop the run before the following week.

53-18 Tech.
We wear white helmets. Potts does ok, Sticks comes in and scores a TD. The D looks like crap in the first half then Katfish threatens Willis’ life. The D shuts out NM in the 2nd half. Special teams looks great. 2 blocked punts and Stevens has a ton of return yards.

Just my hunch.
