Good News/Bad News
In this edition of Good News/Bad News, Taylor Potts wears a white helmet, Eric Smash, Zou and friends.
Taylor Potts
Good News: Taylor Potts's throws look sharp and accurate. I remember 2 bad throws (where no one was there), 2 or 3 throws forced into traffic, and that 1 near pick 6 that was a check-down that he didn't check. Don't be fooled by the announcer saying that pretty much every ball should have been picked off, most of the throws into traffic hit the intended receiver and were not near picks.
Bad News: There still was very little rhythm with the offense, either with Potts or Sheffield in the game. I hope that's an effect of the limited playbook and not of our offense itself. I could see it being a play calling issue, running a lot of very generic air raid plays and getting into a lot of third down situations. Pass catching has to improve, especially out of Cornelius Douglas as he's great once the ball is in his hands. I don't expect the next game to be near as vanilla.
Running Backs
Good News: Eric Stephens is playing (and snoring) like a man with his hair on fire. Not only did he take 10 carries for 46 yards (an ok average) and 3 catches for 43 yards, but he also had 175 return yards including his 93 yarder.
Bad News: Maybe it was because he was up until 3:00 in the morning, but Baron only had a pedestrian 10 carries for 36 yards, dropped a screen pass that was going to go for yards, and fumbled the ball on the goal line. Fumbling the ball is not a good way to stay in Tub's good graces. On a few plays he looked like his old self, but these were few and far between. If our line cannot open holes for him, and he cannot create for himself, he's not going to be getting very many reps.
Injury Report
Good News: Torres and Zouzalik are back on the field. In fact, we got to welcome Zou back with a 55 yard TD reception where he showed his wheels. Okafor made it back as well, which will be huge for line depth. In-game injuries to Brian Duncan and Frank Mitchem don't seem serious, either.
Bad News: Both of our receivers looked rusty in what they did. Sure Zou took one to the house, but that was his only catch of the day. Torres got a couple of catches but not many yards. Zou made what was almost a costly mistake at punt return. He'll get it back, though. This is concerning because it reminds me that LaRon Moore is scheduled to return to action next week and will probably not be up to his best level. We need him, but we also need him to not be rusty
Crawford and Brydon
Good News: I love special-teams demons, I really do, and we have our very own duo in backup running back Aaron Crawford and walk-on linebacker Jonathan Brydon. Two blocked kicks, the two of these players involved in both. Additionally, I think one of these two had a key block that sent Eric Stephens on his 93 yard kick return romp. I'd love to see Crawford get more time as the big back in the 2 back set as I think his change of pace and power as a blocker.
Bad News: There's really no bad news with these two, but I'll point out that all is still not right in the land of kickoff coverage. The longhorns are going to be brining a lot of them out of the endzone on us, trying to break that big one. Up the middle we've been salty, but along the sideline, for some odd reason, we're leaking badly.

We have to remember that ...
This offense has been turned loose for 10 years as Leach taught his offensive on how to adjust on the fly depending on what the defense gave them.
I don’t know how many plays the offense ran in practice, but one of the things I know is that Leach believed in repetition, repetition, repetition. He believe that repeating the right things enough would lead to playing naturally without thinking. It would be instinct.
Based on the comments of the current staff, they are not turning the team loose. It is going to take time, maybe a couple of years, to learn a new method even though the plays and terminology are the same.
I think we will be O.K. because of the talent assembled, but not as potent as we could be if they were turned loose.

Good write up, I like it. What I also like is...
Who else read the phrase “Eric smash”, and said it the manner of a particular character in which the term pays homage? Me likey!
every time he makes a good power middle-run, i yell out “Eric Smash” in that manner. it’s pretty awesome.
Is that like "Reagan Smash"?
Or is it “Hulk Smash”?

I really miss Leach
and I agree with Arizona Raider it is going to take time with Tubberville. These last two games, while we are 2-0 and I get that, have been two of the most boring Tech football games in the past ten years. Even in games where we won by 30 and lost by 30 Leach kept us on edge. Unless Tubberville and Co. have something up their sleeve for the game against the Whorns this week, I am not going into the game feeling my best. I still think Potts is too slow, while Sticks stuggled he really picked up the tempo. I think the problem is Tubberville is a plodder. Watching SEC football is painful. How do they even get raiting points. Our receivers are running vanilla routes. Where is the creativity that Leach gave us. I was hoping the first game was first game jitters, but again we are dropping way too many passes. With Leach if you dropped at pass, you did not play and you went into his dog hourse. Thus we did not drop many passes. The running game is not working under OC Brown. Our running backs are not set up to run off tackle. Leach used the pass to set up the run. We miss the wide splits on offense. This is not the SEC, it is the Wild Wild West. If you keep your guns strapped in your holster, your going to get killed in the Big 12. And finally, special teams is a disaster. I thought this was one area that Tubberville would fix. Our field goal kicker needed the practice. Tubberville would not even attempt field goals, that tells you how much he is worried about the kicking game. Leach did not attempt many field goals, but at least we made most of them when he was not going for it on fourth and 20. I still think we have a shot at the Whorns, because they too are trying to put a square peg in a round hole. I know we can’t bring him back, but I miss the PIRATE. To Red Raiders.
What games are you watching, Btech???? The routes are the same, the tempo is FAR from plodding and Tuberville gambles much more than your average coach ever thinks to.
You did see our special teams on Saturday, yes? I am not sure how you can possibly say they are a disaster with two punt blocks and a 93-yd return, not to mention some outstanding punting.
These Leach comparisons on the board are beyond absurd at this point…
Boring? Far from it...
I agree Tech92. Nothing has really changed from tempo. Tech ran 77 plays to NM’s 79. Time of possession was 26 to 34, respectively. I know OC Brown said he wants to run 100 plays a game. FYI- we ran 85 against SMU.
I think we would have been closer to 90 plays had we not had two starting drives within NM’s own 10 yard line.
Maybe the real reason why it seems boring is because we were scoring so fast that we gave them the ball more than we, as a fan would have like and they control the clock.
I don't get it
I’m seeing the same offensive plays we ran with Leach. The passing game is still there and the running game is up to our backs to figure out. My frustration is the lack of finishing plays. WR’s would be doing better if they caught more balls and RB’s need to find their game period. Defensive secondary might be one of the best we’ve had and the real problem falls with the MLB’s.

well...
I’ll take a “boring” 30 pt. win over an “exciting” 30 pt. loss any day. Just sayin’.
Amen!
Lots of complaining for a team at 2-0. What will you say if we actually lose a game??? Just sayin’!!
+1

Agreed
I think he watched a replay of SMU…maybe?

Nah
Everyone has this team under a microscope right now and saying they are boring is non-sense. Re-watch some OC games from the past few years and we really didnt do much more. You really want a snooze fest, watch some highlights from our Cotton Bowl loss to Bama several years ago.
I remember when I was at Tech and Leach was just hired. People were up in arms and thought he would ruin the whole program. Outlook sure did change by year 2003 and I hope the same is true for us next year too.
Time for the comparisons to stop. And people keep forgetting the biggest difference: we have different players from 2008!
I would add...
that field position played a role in Saturday’s game with regard to offensive tempo. We hade quite a few VERY short drives. Hard to have a tempo or rhythm when a drive is less than 3-4 plays.
So
Tech92 are you telling me that our receivers are not dropping passes, that the new and improved running game is busting at the seams, and that our field goal kicking game is in good shape. I have seen a QB named Potts who is slow to make decisions, and remember the coaches are telling him wear to throw the ball. The tempo of the game what are you talking about, Potts brings the team to the line of scrimmage and they have to wait for OC Brown to send the play in. Do you really think that the Whorns DB’s and CB’s are not going to win some of those 50/50 balls, do you really think that their line backers are going do drop passes thrown right to them. It was great to see blocked punts, but we were playing New Mexico which lost the week before 72-0, and they were so banged up, they had to go out there taped up just to play. I am not wathcing the scoreboard, I am watching Tubberviel Auburn Tech University. I support Tubbs and the team, this is just my opinion, and I think Tubbs system will just not work in the Big 12. Yes, we are 2-0, I get that, but Tubbs is boring. Go Red Raiders.
Ok, first, sorry if this seems like the grammar police but misspelling “where” (wear) and “rating” (raiting?) and TUBERVILLE (Tubberviel), is kind of annoying and instantly makes me lose a little respect for whoever is saying it, please take a little pride in what your writing, the little red underlines mean misspelled, so just google it after that if you dont know it. Now to continue, NM did lose 72-0, you think that Locksley didn’t prepare for this game a little more after that, thinking another loss like that could threaten his job?? Now the special teams last week had some blocked field goals, this week they didnt, Williams definitely got his kicks higher (except 1), so that improved. This week our return yards were great and had 2 blocked punts, I dont know what else you want on special teams!! I mean blame it on them being beat up or terrible or whatever reason, but running through a blocker or two in the same time it takes a guy at the collegiate level to snap it to the punter is impressive, always. Ok, the coaches are telling Potts where to throw the ball??? I mean he has a #1,2,3 and so on, but do you think they are in his helmet telling him to throw to whoever? If that was the case, blame Brown on the bad throws, Potts is still making the decisions until the whistle. We are 2-0, I think anyone that has been paying attention so far knows our offensive and defensive schemes have been VANILLA, so stop being such a negative nancy about everything and have some hope in your team, wreck em!
You forgot the ' in wreck 'em.

Youre not gettin it
What youre talkin about is style points. If thats all you want go watch Hawai’i. They have all the style you want. They can hang 450yds of offense on the Trojans but still lose.

No, I didn’t say we aren’t dropping catchable passes and the running game is going bonkers. But what I did address were specific things you pointed out. The Air Raid had/has it’s share of dropped balls – especially by guys who are third on the depth charts. The running game, as weak as it may seem, had over 150 yds last week. We are averaging more plays (I believe) per game than last year to this point, so yes, the tempo is up.
And special teams looked amazing.
I do agree that some excitement should be tempered by the fact that UNM is a. terrible, b. started 8 people who have never played a college down before two weeks ago, c. have a nut job for a head coach (and the bad kind, not the eccentric kind).
Plenty of room to improve, but this team isn’t headed for 4-8 either.
I don't get it
I finally got a chance to watch the 1st half of the game and some of the second on Sunday. Potts does not look sharp and accurate. How can no one see this?!!!!! He throws behind people on half his throws. Sure the other ones look alright but come on!? And they aren’t hard throws to make. Potts would have thrown 2 picks in the first half if we were playing UT. The screen pass to Batch was totally Potts fault as he threw it behind him at his ankles. Thank heavens Potts was given great field position or we might have been down at the half!!!! I don’t care what anyone says, Potts cannot get in rhythm for more than 3 plays, has to have the running game working, and kills YAC and drives with his throws behind receivers. Its the same stuff he did last year that got him pulled. The only reason he ever came back was Sticks injury. Why is he our QB? Maybe no one else is better, maybe they are, but its clear to me that if Potts is the guy we will not win against UT. (pending a +3 in the TO department and great special teams).
I do see some of what your saying. I’m not convinced yet that he’s going to get us to 10 wins or more. I’m strongly in favor of seeing both these guys play at this point. I think Potts has improved but I still see some areas that concern me. The almost pick 6 among others could or will cost us a game against better competition. Sheffield will also make mistakes and throw interceptions as well so it’s hard to know which one of these guys we’re better off with. Sheffield has had less playing time but who’s to say he would have been better if he had played as much as Potts has. Lots of “what ifs” about both these players from my point of view. For now I do agree that their skill sets are different and one might play better in certain situations. I would love to see both these guys playing Saturday for sure. Personally, I think the only way Tech beats UT is to be unique and starting both these guys may be the answer.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
The old saying? If you play two QBs it’s because you don’t have one.
I don’t think Tech has that problem. But if Potts is benched after leading a team to 52 points with no INTs, the staff does run a risk of losing a team early. The reality is he is not Graham Harrell, but he’s also not Chris Simms. Not worth the risk at this point. Let’s wait to see how he does in first half against Texas. If Sheff needs to bail us out, I think he has the ability to do it. But I also think he may be better suited as a reliever. Or two different coaching staffs would have put him at number one.
I am not saying Sticks should start
I am just saying that there is something missing with this team. By the way if you ever come to South Texas, every city seems to have a Ville in it. Tubberville thinks that Tech is Tubbervile Tech. I fear change, and I can’t help myself. I am not sure what to expect on College Game Day against the Whorns, but that is precisely where I am coming from. I do not know what to expect, and maybe that is the suprise in the little box. We have a lot to be thankful for, yes, we could be 0-2 like Virgina Tech, but I like coaches who get on their players and get the best out of them. I just do not think that in the first two weeks I have seen the best of this team. I know its only week 3, and there is a lot of football left to play. We certainly will get measured Saturday. Hope my grammer and selling have improved Tech92, I only graduated from the sixth grade. Go Red Raiders.
Is anyone every going to be happy with just a win?
I mean if we go to the Big XII Championship and win by 1, are we all gonna piss and moan because we only won by one point? What about next week if we have a nail biter? I’m not saying it’s not ok to say “Whoa, that was close.” But to cry about not having the same amount of offensive yards and, “boo hoo”, we didn’t blow ‘em out by 30, and “wa, wa” they scored 14 and we only scored 21. Come on people. We’re 2-0. Get over it and let’s friggin’ go beat the heck out of the Whorns.

Our new attacking defense gave up nearly 500 yards to the worst team in division 1 college football
Saturday we play the very close loser of the last national championship game. Heck yeah I’m worried.
Thanks Mbrown603
That’s all I am saying. Yes, I am worried. The Pirate spoiled us. If we are not going to talk about Fat Little Girlfriends, then what the heck else is there to talk about. Now we have to focus on the game itself. Tubberville does not throw his players under the buss, at least not yet. He sugar coats it, and that is what has me the most worried. Yes we are 2-0, and that’s all I can say about that right now. But that does not mean I won’t accept a one point win the Big 12 Championship game either. As a matter of fact, I would be thrilled if TECH just played in the Big 12 Championship game, nonetheless win the darn thing. I think we can whip the Whorns, but the QB is going to have to not only make better throws, but the receivers are going to have to catch the ball and get those darn YAC’s. The defense is going to need a push from up front, and they need to pressure the heck out of Gilbert. I do not think the Whorns are going to run the ball that much, I think they are trying to trick us. How about that, the Whorns are trying to trick us. I know we can do it, but I fear the unkown. Go Red Raiders.
