Red Raider Gridiron | Press Conference Links

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

Decreasing Productivity for the Day:  First up, you can watch the entire Texas Tech vs. New Mexico game online.  There goes your morning.  Up next, you can also watch yesterday's press conference where you can hear the musings of QB Taylor Potts, CB Will Ford, IR Austin Zouzalik and head coach Tommy Tuberville (you can also see Tubs blow out the candles for his birthday cake).  This is something I usually transcribe, but it was close to an hour of video.  Now you don't have to work for 3/4's of the day.  You can also find the official site game preview and the 2-deep, which I don't think has any real change.

Stephens Named Special Teams Player of the Week:  Congrats to RB Eric Stephens who was named the special teams player of the week by the Big 12.  Congrats!

Press Conference Coverage:  I linked to the press conference above and you've got a handful of articles:  LAJ's Don Williams with some questions and answers from Tuberville . . . LAJ's Don Williams with quotes from the players and Tuberville on Saturday's game . . . DT's Mike Graham writes that Texas Tech is taking the same approach on Saturday against Texas . . . ESPNDallas' Jeff Caplan with Tuberville on the early season conference game . . . DMN's Mike Graham with five soundbites and Tuberville says that this team hasn't played a complete game . . .

Notes, Notes and More Notes with a Tech Extra on Top:  LAJ's Don Williams with a notebook, including the note that both S Franklin Mitchem and RT Chris Olson will be ready to play this weekend, but CB LaRon Moore and OT Beau Carpenter will not be ready to play this week . . . Williams also runs down Tuberville's MVP's for the week, which includes LG Lonnie Edwards, DE Scott Smith, RB Aaron Crawford, RB Andre McCorkle and DE Dartwan Bush.  I think this is fairly telling about what Tuberville thinks of Smith:

"Right now, he’s carrying about 257 to 260 pounds," Tuberville said. "He probably needs to weigh about 280. But I tell you, he comes to practice every day and works hard. He’s been a very pleasant surprise in terms of coming from a junior college and grasping what we’re doing. He’s made us much better and gives us a guy that can go in and out and play different positions."

Raiderville:  DT's Derek Moy with a current look at the burgeoning Raiderville, while the LAJ's Matthew McGowan reports on Raiderville, including a rumor that basketball head coach Pat Knight will be staying a night, bringing a generator and bringing food.

Ubben and the Heisman:  ESPN's David Ubben (yes, I'm linking to him, but there's a reason) must have received quite a bit of hate-mail for his Heisman stance of not voting for any player unless that player is playing for a top 10 program, going back into history and how traditionally, programs that win, have players win the Heisman.  I appreciate Ubben's effort, but here's the thing that he doesn't get.  We all understand that it's a flawed award and that historically, it does award this honor to the best player for the best team, but that's not the way it has to be.  Ubben or anyone else that has a voice doesn't have to conform to what everyone else does.  If the best player in the nation isn't on the best team, then there's no requirement that you vote for him.  Just because everyone else is running to jump off a cliff doesn't meant that you have to go run and jump off the cliff as well.  Be your own person and vote accordingly, but there's nothing that requires you or any Heisman voter to vote for the best player on the best team, despite the history.

Texas Longhorn Links:  Two good things from Burnt Orange Nation:  In the Trenches - The Metacognition, er Ignition of Garrett Gilbert and We Have Issues: Texas Longhorns Week 2.  We can talk about quotes and things, but I'm more interested in reading about what's good and what's bad with the Longhorns.  Both posts are excellent, and here's a snipet:

If I was Neal Brown, offensive coordinator of Texas Tech, I would be looking at formations that draw Dravannti Johnson, Christian Scott, Blake Gideon and Chykie Brown  to the same side of the field. It might require a TE to do that, and we know that Tech doesn't use one, but trips left would yield possibilities for generating weak coverage on the short routes.

. . . AAS.com's Kirk Bohls' with an interesting thought, which is that the Longhorns have found their identity on offense:

Texas' offense hasn't committed a turnover.

Texas' offense hasn't allowed a sack.

Texas' offense has six rushing touchdowns in two games.

. . . DMN's Kate Hairopoulos writes that Texas faces a big challenge vs. Texas Tech . . .

http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/431279/big_12_logo_resize.jpg Big 12 and National Links:  Rock M Nation's Bill C. with a look around the Big 12 (this was a very good round-up with links to all of the Big 12 games) . . . SB Nation's Spencer Hall with his weekly The Alphabetical . . . CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd with some quotes from Mike Leach's radio show . . . everyone has their own rankings and I'm not really linking to them, except for this one, from HuskerExtra's Curt McKeever, who dropped this bit about Texas Tech and white helmets all the way back to the year of my birth:

5. Texas Tech (2-0)
LW: def. New Mexico 52-17; TW: Texas, 7 p.m. (ABC)
Wonder if the Red Raiders will come out in all-white uniforms (helmet included) like they did last week? Wonder if first-year coach Tommy Tuberville is aware Tech wore white helmets back in 1974 when they smacked the Longhorns 26-3 in a September home matchup?

. . . Omaha.com's Lee Barfknect with a Big 12 notebook . . . NewsOK with a Big 12 notebook . . . LAJ's Adam Zuvanich runs down the most exciting moments in college football . . .

Ubben

is too dumb to get what he is talking about. Obviously we know the what happens in practice (as Seth says). This guys intelligence is in question.

I’ll say this, as I have a colleague who’s brother is a national blogger (name withheld) for baseball out of California…covering all the teams in detail in the conference is a monumental challenge. It’s almost impossible for one person to know everything about every team as much as we think that’s their job. The reality is that most of these guys cover the teams of interest on a broader scale. In our case that’s UT, OU and Neb.

Love him or hate him (and I’m rather indifferent to pretty much all national bloggers), he has a tough gig. I know nothing of his intelligence, but he’s probably a decent enough guy who tries hard to satisfy a notoriously difficult group (college football fans).

Now, his bit about the Heisman is entirely different and I make not excuses for him.

2008 Domination Repeat

I just finished reading the DMN article. One negative of the myopic focus on “The play” is that it leaves the impression that we stole the victory from UT. That is very far from the truth. That game was a total beat down of the Horns. We beat them in every phase of the game, and lead for the first 58 minutes. If it wasn’t for a couple of long McCoy-Shipley completions the score would have reflected how we dominated them. Oh how I long to repeat the domination minus the UT face-saving bombs. WE. CAN. DO. IT! GUNS UP!!!

by Colonel 71 on Sep 14, 2010 9:18 AM CDT reply actions

A reminder that it was only the help of the referees that had UT in that game at the end

It still amazes me that UT came back at the end like that. Having the refs call a no penalty on a punt return touchdown block in the back didn’t hurt. But Tech pretty well dominated the Horns the whole game:

1st Downs TTU 31 UT 18
3rd Down Efficiency TTU 8-16 UT 4-12
4th Down Efficiency TTU 0-0 UT 1-1
Total Yards TTU 579 UT 374
Passing Yards TTU 474 UT 294
Comp-Att TTU36-53 UT 20-34
Yards Per Pass TTU 8.9 UT 8.6
Rushing Yards TTU 105 UT 80
Rushing Attempts TTU 28 UT 28
Yards Per Carry TTU 3.8 UT 2.9
Penalties TTU 8-78 UT 8-56
Turnovers TTU 1 UT 2
Fumbles Lost TTU 1 UT 1
Interceptions Thrown TTU 0 UT 1
Possession TTU 36:53 UT 23:07

It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?

That long Williams TD is what made this one even worth watching. Take that breakdown away and this is a blow out.

If you watched the game...

you would know Tech dominated for three quarters, and gave it all back in one, but then took it back with a second to spare.

Ubben is a moron

Hey, I’ve got an idea for idiots like Ubben, how about you (I dunno) DO YOUR JOB and research players and find out who is the BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY. It’s not even that hard anymore (I want to note, there IS effort involved, but by mid-season you CAN limit the list down to a manageable number), what with the number of games being televised, the statistics available and of course, the internet. But no “Heisman goes to best player on top team” is short hand for “lazy journalism”. But since Seth linked his post, I felt compelled to read, and reading the moronity compelled me to do what people like Ubben (who get paid for this stuff) should do: research!

Using an (admittedly) arbitrary standard of 18 years (the start point is Miami’s ‘92 team which gave us Heisman winner Gino Torretta) I looked at Heisman winners. 2/18, or 11% were on teams outside the top 10 in the final AP & Coaches (or Harris if no Coaches) polls. One of the two, I think is indisputable: Ricky Williams of Texas. Williams was a beast and even though he’s been on and off in the pros, he earned his Heisman. The other? 2007 Tim Tebow. Now granted, Florida was top ten when the Heisman was selected (before they lost to Michigan in their bowl game), but it’s nice to know that we can overlook the “top 10” rule on a “magical” player on a “top” PROGRAM like Tebow. (Tebow was of course one of the “Chosen” three in 2008 also, altho granted his Florida team did much better in 2008)

Point being, in the last 18 years, the Heisman has had about 90% of winners from “Top 10” teams, giving us such luminaries as: Torretta (1992), Charlie Ward (1993), Chris Weinke (2000), Jason White (2003), and Troy Smith (2006).

Interesting information is if we look BEFORE the “Torretta-Top 10” age. So from 1991 to 1974 (again, arbitrary stop point selected at random as the first of Archie Griffin’s 2 years), another 18 years, but now the numbers shift. For this period, we have 7/18 Heisman winners for teams OUTSIDE the top 10 (39%), and of the players for teams IN the top 10, you get players like: Archie Griffin (74,75; only 2 time winner), Tony Dorsett (1976), Earl Campbell (1977), Billy Sims (1978), Mike Rozier (1983), and Doug Flutie (1984). And really, I don’t see any from the “in the top 10” list that I’d question. Couple this with the fact that if we only went with “top 10” players, Barry Sanders (1988), Bo Jackson (1985), Marcus Allen (1981), and George Rogers (1980) never win the Heisman trophy. (Rogers & Jackson played for teams that weren’t even ranked AT ALL, let alone the top 10 in the final polls of their respective years)

Going back a little further (through 1960, which was as far back as I wanted to research since the polls were grouped by decade), we have the period from 1960-1973. In this period polls were also much crazier (the page I looked at only had “top 10” for the AP poll for a few years, and 1971 had some WIDE variance on some teams (Heisman winner Pat Sullivan came from a team ranked #12 in AP and #5 in Harris), so for this one period I’m taking the stance of “outside the top 10 in AP poll”. By that standard, 6/14 (43%) of players that won the Heisman played for non-top 10 teams. And if we MERGE this data with the previous period, 13/32 or a flat 40 PERCENT of Heisman winners from before the “Torretta-Top 10” era were on non-top 10 teams. And again, winners who were IN the top 10 were the likes of
OJ Simpson (1968) and Roger Staubach (1963).

Two things I want to note, #1, Dave Ubben’s RIDICULOUS contention that the current system is good because Eddie George would not have won because he had 83 less yards than Troy Davis in 1995 is stupid. Sure stats count, but they’re not the WHOLE story and if voters thought that Eddie George was better than Troy Davis due to level of competition and intangibles, then that is a valid debate to have. But by ignoring that aspect and pretending that Troy Davis should automatically win simply for having great stats at a small school in an attempt to make a snarky point makes Ubben look like the prick that he apparently is. #2, I don’t think Danny Wuerffel is a great standard bearer for the “Top 10” argument, but if we’re gonna pick random examples, my personal favorite is Charlie Ward who QB’d a #1 Florida State team and then went on to be a role-player in the NBA.

Something Ubben mentioned today - He is not a Heisman Trophy voter

So his take on it carries about the same weight as yours or mine.
