WHAT WE KNOW | The Longhorns have been outstanding in stopping two teams that have struggled thus far to put up much offense. Of course, Texas Tech gave up over 400 yards to New Mexico. So there's that. Back to the Longhorns. I know it's a small sample size, but Rice is 105th in the nation in total offense (played Texas and North Texas) and Wyoming is 98th in total offense (played Southern Utah and Texas) and the Longhorns are getting a lot of credit for holding their two opponents to very few yards, which they did. The Longhorns have done a decent job of defensively shutting down opponents, but I watched a good part of the UT vs. Rice game (only slightly inebriated) and the Texas defense, as always was aggressive, but Rice was making things happen, especially in the first half. You could certainly make the argument that UT just hasn't seen a good offense yet. They have seen diverse and spread-type of offenses, but I think there is a significant difference in talent between Rice and Wyoming. I'm not completely sold that the Longhorns are unflappable on defense. That's not to say that I think the Texas defense is not good and I'm keenly interested to see how the Texas Tech receivers are able and/or figure out how to take advantage of a Longhorn secondary that could have some serious talented drafted when the NFL comes calling. I'll have more on this later in the week, but it's an interesting match-up.
Garrett Gilbert, is off to an okay start. Gilbert is completing 62% of his passes, is averaging only 6.8 yards per attempt, a shade under 200 yards a game, only 1 touchdown and no interceptions. The Longhorns didn't need Gilbert to win games and he's not losing them either. Interestingly, Gilbert's completion percentage and quarterback rating decrease significantly from the first half to the second half:
1st Half: 70.6% | 142.80 Rating
2nd Half: 50.0% | 99.35 Rating
Playing college football is not easy. And even if you play teams that may not be up to your competition, young players, especially quarterbacks, that take beatings all game long can take a toll on a young QB. There's no reason, especially this early in Gilbert's career, to ask him to do too much, and I think that's smart. It would be great if there was a reliable running game for the Longhorns to rely on, but I think that's good news for Texas Tech fans.
WHAT WE CAN EXPECT | More of the same. I do not think that Texas Tech is going to see a huge departure from what Texas has done thus far this year. The most significant improvement on the part of UT will be a matter of the more that they play, they better they will be. I think the Longhorns are still trying to figure out their identity offensively. And this isn't to say that UT has been bad at running the ball, because that's just not the case. The Longhorns ran the ball for 3 touchdowns and 197 yards (4.28/carry) against Rice and 3 touchdowns and 167 yards (5.76/carry) against Wyoming. I thin most Longhorns would prefer to have just one running back step up their play and be the starter, but that just hasn't happened yet and I don't think that it will all year. All three running backs (more on them below) are okay, but if one of them really stood out amongst the others, then they'd play.
| MONDAY | Five Questions |
| TUESDAY | What We Think We Know |
| WEDNESDAY | Keys to the Game |
| THURSDAY | Five Questions |
| FRIDAY | Prediction Time |
If you're Will Muschamp, what do you dare the Texas Tech offense to do. I can't remember which commenter said this (I'm giving you credit, I just can't remember where I read it), but Red Raider fans are going learn very quickly what type of coordinator Neal Brown is. From what I can tell about Neal Brown, is that he's not intimidated by just about anything and he's smart enough and cocky enough to think that he's one of the smartest guys in the room. I like that in an offensive coordinator, but if Neal Brown is what I think he is, then he'll adjust. But to get to my initial question, if you put yourself in Muschamp's shoes, what do you do? Texas Tech still has all of the pieces from a very talented passing offense from last year, meanwhile, Texas Tech may have found a quick enough and shifty enough running back that could cause some real problems with an over-active defense.
This is why I love football.
PLAYERS I THINK YOU SHOULD WATCH | Despite the attention that Gilbert is getting, I couldn't help but think that one of the three running backs could cause some problems for Texas Tech. Here's the three candidates:
Foswhitt Whittaker | 16 rushes | 113 yards | 7.06 YPC | 1 TD | 56.50 YPG
Cody Johnson | 24 rushes | 105 yards | 4.38 YPC | 2 TD | 52.50 YPG
Tre' Newton | 26 rushes | 84 yards | 3.23 YPC | 3 TD | 42.00 YPG
Whittaker gets the call this week and that appears to be the right choice.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Longhorns are making a bunch of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Currently sitting at 10th in the country in tackles for loss. Leading the charge is a ton of defensive stalwarts, including the man who will never graduate, Sam Acho, who already has 4 TFL, but he's also joined by OLB/DE Eddie Jones who has 4 TFL this early in the season. I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but the Longhorns will be attacking in some form or fashion on Saturday. The biggest problem for the Longhorns is that they've only forced 2 turnovers against Rice and no turnovers against Wyoming. This was a defense that was a +9 last year (and would have been even better had they not been a -3 in the national championship game).

Very good comments Seth....
I am much more worried about our offense than our defense (did I just say that?). I think our corners and safeties can go one on one with ut and we will need everyone else to stuff the run.
Defensively ut is ut, they have 12th year senior DE’s and linebackers that recently escape (got out of) prison………..they always have animals………
Were I Katfish (God help me), I would force ut to pass the ball. NB needs to work the 15-20 yd crossing route and the intermediate clearing routes. If we don’t over use it, the draw should do well, but we gotta learn to block.
how’s that for a random post?
Fuck Texas and Fuck espn
Right on the money.
If we force Texas to pass the ball we win, I just haven’t seen that we can stop the run. Years past we owned A+M because we could ignor their passing game and sell out on the run. If we can find a way to stop the run and get just a little pressure on the QB, we will all be celebrating Saturday night.
"The walls that won't come down, we can decorate or climb"
Just going out on limb...
But I don’t think M. Brown or Will Muschamp plan on leaving anything out of the play book.
Every known blitz, double reverse throw back and pooch kick on kick offs is going to get thrown into the mix. Which only makes basic play calling even more dominant. I.e. do everything to run the offense, coverage or defense that you know how to and be ready to adjust to when someone gets identified as a weak link and the opposing coordinator focuses in on that player.
"do routine things routinely"
We always save quite a bit for OU
That said, I think both the offensive and defensive playbooks will be opened up significantly this weekend.
I always look forward to playing you guys, although I wish GG’s first true road game wasn’t in your house at night.
I'd feel the same
I think that will get more focus as the week moves forward. Never know how he will respond. From my perspective (Tech fan), I sure as hell hope he doesn’t respond like Chance Mock did. Some guys thrive in a hostile environment and some press and try to make too much happen.

At this point in the season we do not hold anything back for OU !
We have 7 more weeks to intall additional for OU, Saturday we show all that we know how to execute well…we may have been holding something back vs the first two games, but neither team was of caliber to think we needed more to win. This week play the full deck.

All I meant was
Greg Davis always runs an incredibly vanilla game plan until the OU game—sometimes until the second half of the OU game. No disrespect intended, but it’s generally the first big game of our season. Last year and this year are different with Tech on the schedule, but I think the coordinators won’t show everything.
That’s all I meant.
(I’m guessing you originally thought I’m a Tech fan.)
Somebody else had an interesting post about Tech vs Texas so far this season
I haven’t been too impressed with either team weeks one and two (thanks Piraeus for these tidbits):
Tech has played two teams.
UT has played two teams.
Tech has played one home game and one away game.
UT has played one home game and one away game.
Tech opened with a game against a team from Conference USA, and followed that with a game against a team from the Mountain West Conference.
UT opened with a game against a team from Conference USA, and followed that with a game against a team from the Mountain West Conference.
The combined 2009 record for the two teams that Tech played was 9-16. One team was 8-5. The other was 1 -11.
The combined 2009 record for the two teams that UT played was 9-16. One team was 7-6. The other was 2-10.
Tech’s combined margin of victory in their first two games was 43 points.
UT’s combined margin of victory in the two games was 44 points.
Tech has outscored their opponents in the first half by 28 points.
UT has outscored their opponents in the first half by 27 points.
Tech has outscored their opponents in the second half by 15 points.

I think I’m ready for some interstate rivalry football.

Just win one for all us old farts
We can’t take the losses very well, now.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
I can tell you first hand....
From being at the Rice UT game that their defense is waaay over rated. They are aggressive, but make glaring mistakes OFTEN. I mean I was front row behind the Rice bench and could hear coaches scheming their D, and how obvious it was to them. I mean if Rice had ANY sort of passing game this year they would have made a game of it. The ONLY thing UT has going for it on Defense is size and speed, they bring the backers often which leaves major holes.
On the offensive side it was as bland as it could get… Their big back made it through one series before he was visibly broken down hands on knees style out of exhaustion, and the other two backs only mad big plays when there were just straight up missed tackles. I mean Rice on defense was missing the best D-line player they have had in YEARS, his backup is arguably terrible, and pressure was still getting to Grapes. When Grapes had people open he led them right into major hits, or borderline pics. This “Power” offense they devised is nothing more than what they ran before ole Vincy played. Extremely simple I-back dives and some play action. Now they might mix it up against us, but I can tell you now that if they bring that offensive gameplan into Lubbock they are in trouble.
I dont care how the scores looked on TV, on the sidelines Rice KNEW they could play with UT, and compared to how they came out and how visibly scared/nervous they were to start that is saying something. Make no mistake, UT WANTED to run up the score on Rice but just couldn’t do it, they went for it on 4th down several times, and one time inside the 5 yrd line got stopped 3 in a row plays and I mean STUFFED.
This team is all hype, and if we come out confident in what we know how to do, and don’t let ourselves fall into the UT Hype machine there is no reason at all we can’t win this game big time. UT def believes their hype, and when hit in the mouth early (Rice drove 76 yrds first drive out) they respond with frustration.
I can’t wait for the game! Wreck ’Em
Compelling thoughts, Vassago, it would be a hoot to win big over the whorns !!

You’re not wrong, but we stayed in pretty much the same set the whole game. Based on what we (and SEC opponents) have seen from Muschamp’s defenses in the past, I have to assume that was intentional. I wouldn’t put too much stock in Rice’s ability to figure it out. If they’re were so successful at picking us apart, shouldn’t they have gained more than 219 yards?
I get what your saying...
But honestly most Rice fans would have found it a victory to break 100 yrds… I love ’em, but we def knew how outmatched the situation was, it was clearly visible by just the size difference in players.

tu will
have a bigger problem on its hands than in the previous two weeks. They showed weaknesses and Tech will not ‘run out of gas’ like Rice and Wyoming. Tech has faced a team that played all 4 quarters (smu) while Texas has not. The real test is who wins the 1st and 4qrts. And I think TxTech has the advantage. In My Scarlet colored glasses Opinion.
Adversity causes some men to break, and others to break records.
-- Source Unknown
I think you're right about Q1 and Q4
I’m not worried about our guys’ chances against a team that plays four quarters so much as Jones Stadium at night.
I’m worried about you Tech fans, though. Have you really lost so much self-respect that you’ve chosen to act like an Aggie? (See, e.g., your use of “tu.”)
I don't mind you being the University of Texas
The Harry Ransom Center alone makes UT one of the greatest places to visit in America. But I’m a book geek. The Harry Ransom Center & the British Library in London are the two greatest repositories of original English language manuscripts from Shakespeare to James Joyce. About the only thing I don’t admire about UT is the color burnt orange & the athletic programs. You have to draw the line somewhere. Good luck Saturday.
It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?
uhhh
Tech people definitely do not say TU. That is a dumb Aggie thing and I will not partake. Most I know do not either. UT is a fine University with the nations top athletic department many years. Mainly b/c they are the top dog in Texas. Which is the best country in the world. That being said, I’m a Tech fan through and through and hope we kick Longhorn ass this weekend. However, I not that it’s a much different kind of ass kicking than A&M, of which I have much less respect. mnHorn sounds like a nice guy so far this week…
Turnovers
My prediction: turnovers will be the difference in a close game.
If Texas can rush the ball well and is not forced to throw most of the time, that will be a big problem for Tech. If Texas can’t run the ball well and has to mostly stay in the shotgun (with rookie QB Gilbert dealing with a plethora of blitzes), that will be a big problem for Texas if Tech has a good pass rush.
For the Tech O, there probably won’t be much time for intermediate routes. Texas will put intense pressure on the Tech QB with just a 4 man rush (albeit with a load of zone blitzing). The Tech QBs are going to have to get rid of it quickly to targets that get open very quickly. Leach was brilliant at coaching this. It will be interesting to see if the new Tech OC is as good as Leach.
Predictions
Wal Mart still won’t run out of Longhorn t shirts or koozies…
The swans will return to Capistrano….and I will return to Lubbock Saturday.
Will Muschamp will be the posterboy for FIGJAM
There will be 10 times the talent on the UT side versus Tech….but not the heart
There will be a familiar smell in the air that can only be found in God’s Country….
Its not Mack Brown’s fault
Ubben will move on to Landry as his only Heisman candidate

I would prefer to let people speak their mind as long as they’re not violating any rules. As I said this morning, I don’t consider fans from other schools to be trolls, per se. Numbers 1 and 2 were stupid and childish
Number 3: The “Sand Aggie” nickname only came about when some Tech fans decided to start acting like Aggie fans. This is not a blanket statement, and it applies only to those who subscribe to the tired cliches. The primary one is the insistence that Texas only wins because the refs help them, while Tech wins because of out-efforting, out-playing, out-etc., Texas. The other is that whole t-shirt fan crap.
Anywho, I hope you enjoy the game on Saturday. It’s always one of the top-4 regular season games for me.
I've been thinking about Leach at Minnesota
after watching them struggle. I know some great people up there and the Twin Cities is a fun place to visit. He’d do well and they have awesome new facilities. It would be fun to watch some Big 10 heads explode when he starts running that offense…

I graduated from UT and have lived in Austin my whole life.
sorry to burst your bubble there, detective.
Picking up the blitz and effective run game will get us a W.
We need to be able to convert on 3rd downs a good amount while also picking up the blitz. If we can do that and have a solid ground game we could do some damage.
Defensively in order to win this game we HAVE to pressure GG no matter what. If that doesn’t happen it will be a long game. Our D line is going to have to play big. I think the key deciding factor in this game is our D line. Stopping the run and getting pressure. Hopefully Sam Fehoko wakes up and makes some tackles/sacks.
Timing....
Neither team is running on all eight cylinders yet. The timing is about a degree off.

In the amateur small town fights the bulls are are given a second change, that is where men get killed.
I will give you the guy in the striped shirt is a dumb azzzz.
This guy on the other hand has balls of steel.

FORZA ROSSI
The pic should have been...
of the Matador spearing the bull. That’s what I want to see at the Jones on Saturday.

The guy with a spear--lance is called picador, he simply wounds the bull enough to weaken him

I saw the bulls in Spain
anyone who gets near one of them outside of a bull ring is loco (they act altogether different in a group—still dangerous)…the guys in the ring know more than we can imagine about them…they scout and have a game plan…do not worry about second chances with one of these animals if it means that they get more than one fight…any matador who gets into a ring with a bull who has had a previous fight is not worth seeeing….the bull learns and will kill him.

Timing is everything in sex?
Now I’m really thrown off.
I thought we were talking about UT getting their ass kicked on Saturday night in the Jones.
My 2 Cents - Things to watch for playing UT
- WR Mike Davis having another big game.
- DJ Monroe having a break out game and getting more opportunities with the Offense.
- WR Goodwin rebounding after a poor game (which may have been due to being shaken up)
- GG deep threat ability.
- UT Secondary stepping it up.
My impression so far is that GG still needs to relax more in the pocket and he needs to work on his finesse game so look at Texas to run the ball, perhaps more frequently then in the past two games. This will keep TT quick scoring offense off the field and protect GG. Texas running game is slowly coming together and may just win or lose the game for Texas. This doesn’t mean Texas won’t throw the ball if the running game seems to be a bust. Like it has been said many times before Texas is still looking for an identity so it may be in TT best interest to have multiple game plans. I think Greg Davis will open up the playbook just enough so look for Texas running the ball first and passing second (not to state the obvious). Also, Texas used DJ in the MNC game on various sweep and reverse plays…I expect these types of plays in the TT game even though we haven’t seen DJ on the offense side of the ball too often so far this season.
