Red Raider Gridiron | Batch on Trash Talking and Hoping for Turnovers
A couple of housekeeping issues: 1) My definition of a troll is someone that hops onto DTN to only talk trash, but just because a UT fan is a part of the conversation doesn't make him/her a troll. If the proprietor of BON, Peter Bean, joins the conversation on DTN he's certainly not a troll, but a fan of another team that wants to chime in. I think that's good and I appreciate UT fans checking in on DTN and giving us insight. 2) Friend of DTN, TB from Bring On The Cats was part of a panel of bloggers and mainstream sports writers to discuss the media coverage of the possibility of the break-up of the Big 12. Good stuff.
Tuesday Presser: You can find the post-practice video here. Here's my non-transcript:
Tommy Tuberville: Must execute a lot better. Their consistent, and we must have better quality of play. Guys are focused. They understand the urgency of how much the team has to improve over the next few days. Been waiting for the Big 12. Have seen all of the tents at Raiderville. Pretty impressive. Appreciate the support. UT is running downhill more, underneath the center. Play-action with the quarterback. Most programs are going back to some sort of running game and execute a little simpler. It's definitely a different offense.
OLB Brian Duncan: Goal every week is to get three sacks. Plan on coming after Gilbert, he hasn't played a road game and Willis wants to go after him. Wants to duplicate that outcome, excited to play any team. Big opportunity, and getting the "W" is even bigger. Had faith in 2008 and as soon as it happened he went wild and crazy. Conducted the band after the game.
IR Detron Lewis: Can't dwell on 2008. Special moment for the team and the program. Will watch the DVD on the Texas secondary later today. UT is always good. Improving from game-to-game. Hope to improve this Saturday.
Pretty interesting that Duncan simply states that Willis intends on just coming after UT QB Garrett Gilbert. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if a defense is aggressive then there's a pretty good chance that the defense is going to give up a big passing play. The more I think about it, the more I think that perhaps DC Willis thought that if there was a time to test whether or not he could play that aggressive defense that he prefers was against SMU and New Mexico.
More on White Helmets: I think I'm ready to move on with this, but LAJ's Don Williams has a bit more on the controversial white helmets. Here's Tuberville and Williams:
"When you’re on the road, traditional white looks nice, I think. To me, if you look at all the teams across the country, the tradition is white. We’re a black helmet team. That might be the only time we do it this year."
Or it might not. Asked whether he’d keep the white helmets for other road games, Tuberville said he hasn’t decided yet.
And IR Austin Zouzalik likes them and if you don't like what Zouzalik, then you're obviously un-American:
"I love the white helmets. I like the all-white," he said. "Everybody was pretty excited when we walked in the locker room for the game and saw those helmets."
This nightmare will not end for me.
Drawing from 2008: FWST's Dwain Price writes that Texas Tech is drawing inspiration from the 2008 game and CB Will Ford has some thoughts:
"I was here for the 2008 game, and I really liked what I saw," Tech cornerback Will Ford said. "I plan on repeating that and trying to get the win.
"We don't plan on losing."
Batch on Trash Talking: RB Baron Batch continues his weekly diary and this time he writes about trash talking fans and even goes so far as to give you a few simple rules for trash talking. I'm waiting for someone to respond by commenting that Batch can't tell fans what to do.
So much more after the jump.
Hoping for Turnovers: DT's Mike Graham writes that the Longhorns are hoping to force turnovers against QB Taylor Potts. Here's UT's S Christian Scott:
"As far as the secondary goes, we’re always talking about turnovers, forcing turnovers, forcing interceptions," Scott said. "We feel like it will be really important for an away game at Lubbock. So we feel turnovers will be key in a game like this."
While LG Lonnie Edwards is confident:
"I think the challenge is just ourselves," Tech offensive lineman Lonnie Edwards said. "We’ve got to go out there and just do what we know to do. They’re no different than they were this year or the year before that, and I think we’ve competed well with them the past three years."
Miscellaneous: LAJ's Don Williams writes that S Franklin Mitchem practiced yesterday, which is good news . . . Raiderville continues to grow . . . former Red Raider Brandon Carter was picked up by Tampa Bay . . . the Scout.com class of 2012 top 100 was released and your favorite linebacker, Derek David, made the list . . . when I linked to my interview with Jay Shelton of SWC Helmet History, I had a good DTN reader send an old Sports Illustrated article that talked about the 1976 31-28 win over Texas (THIS IS A MUST READ) . . .
Texas Longhorn Links: The Statesman has three articles this morning, including Longhorn football notes, scouting Texas Tech and inquiring if the Horns can put it all together . . . FSSW with some Longhorn daily bullets . . . the Daily Texan with the thought that the offensive line will be challenged against Texas Tech . . . ESPN Dallas with the story on freshman receivers pushing their way up the depth chart . . .
Big 12 and National Links: Football Outsiders' Robert Weintraub with his weekly look at the nation . . .

Wow Seth that SI article was superb.
I see some starling simularities in the 1976 and the 2010 teams from across 2 plus decades.

Fozzy Whittaker
He is the new RB starting against Tech. Whittaker along with Tre Newton and Cody Johnson will give Texas some options in the Running game.
Good to know....
1. That Tech plans on winning this game. I’d hat to think we plan on losing.
2. That Katfish thinks that this new fangled fad of thowing the ball is going away….thank God, there is nothing more boring than watching a finely honed howitzer in a tight spiral keenly fitting between two defenders. The run game is so much more fun to watch.
3. Speaking of run game, tubbs thinks ut “runs downhill” We, therefore should kick their ass, as there are no hills to run down in the hub (except for the tunnels – which, I believe are out of bounds)
4. How to trash talk……if only we were allowed to do so in the Jones.
Finally, I got a little carried away yesterday in my ranting. To those I may have offended, I do certainly appologize -unless you are a Walmart t-shirt buying, tea-sip. As an explanation, the only thing I despise more than hance is a whorn.

I have no issues with Batch's rules of trash talking.
1. Respect the other team’s players and coaches.
2. Respect your university .
3. Don’t use a barrage of obscenities — it shows lack of intelligence.
4. Trash talk is part of college football so have fun with it.
5. Be creative and witty in your attempts — they are appreciated.
6. Be annoying but not an idiot.
7. Be classy but super crazy.
8. Don’t throw things (unless it’s hundred dollar bills — OK, I’m joking).
9. Be loud all the time
10. Be confident when you talk trash or it makes you look sheepish and cowardly
With the exception of rule Number 8,
it sounds as if Batch is describing our very own SARR.

Most of these are good...
but expecting people to obey all of these all tha time is just wishful thinking. I appreciate Batch gettin his Moses on, but that’s just not us…If u want nice fans go to Nebraska. Texas Tech wants more, our players and fans thrive off that sense of urgency. That’s Texas Tech, That’s our identity…Whatever it takes. So while these rules are a best case scenario, I’d rather Batch blog about 10 ways to break some tackles..I wish we could play nice and expect to get our fair share; but this summers negotiations proved (again) that it will never be the reality. Once again, u want another identity, go somewhere else…this is Texas Tech

When I was a junior...
(after the banning of tortillas), I knew of someone brought two 100 packs of corn tortillas and threw them into the student crowd waiting to get into the game. That way they were dispersed and everyone could hid them individually. I saw at least 50 go off on the opening kickoff. Awesome.
Tortilla buyout
I’ve thought about buying out a walmart/united/whatever of tortillas and giving out packs of them to anyone and everyone.
Don't
They are a little tough to sneak in… especially for students, but it’s not impossible. We don’t need the 15 yard penalty that gets assessed after the kickoff return though. We’ll need as clean a game as possible to win this thing.
By all means be loud and support your team, but don’t cost them yards on the field.
only if they reach the field or the opposing team......
if throw east, should be ok…………with all due respect.

Problem is, those things get caught in the wind and freaking fly all over the place. I loved when we did that and was pissed when the Big XII stepped in. But it has cost us several times in the years since then. Texas is a team we can’t afford to give free 15-yard bumps to from the bleachers.
Besides, there’s liable to be a ton of folks who are ignorant to the penalty.
maybe we can convince all the senators and stuff
to throw them from inside the luxury suites. Then they would harmlessly slap against the windows and slide to the floor.

tostadas fly farther:)
It’s would be awesome if we could get ahold of those giant flour tortillas they have at Chipotle. I bet those bad boys will fly.

Have you ever played Chipolte Golf on the Wii?
They do fly a lot further than the frisbees.
It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?
Im just not feeling all this buzz, I dont think Tubby has the team ready. The offense scores but it seems like its almost on accident, the drops, the run plays (when expected) are just too rhythm killing

Love the SI 1976 Article
I was there and as I said earlier this week it was the greatest game I saw at Jones Stadium. Also good to see the quote from Harold Buell since we came from the same high school. I am feeling more confident about the game everyday and don’t know why. It is the “INTANGIBLES” I think.
ut is "The Evil Empire"
Great SI article......
brings back so many memories…..I was @ the Jones in 1974 when we beat the teasips…..I watched the 1976 game on TV……Great names: Sloan HC, Parcells & Cronnell Defensive Coaches for TTU, and Rodney Allison who later would be Brett Favres QB coach @ So. Miss.! I don’t think GG or The High Plains Drifter really know what to expect from a Crazed West Texas teasip hating Crowd but they will find out real fast and I predict that The Jeep will have his way with GG and Potts will be the SR. Leader TTU needs him to be! Wreck’Em Tech
extract From the Daily Texan the holy than thou crowd..
“On Saturday, the Texas offensive linemen will not only have to ward off Texas Tech’s second-best pass rush in the nation, but they will also have to block out an element that’s not on the field — the fans. Texas Tech fans are infamous for menacing heckling and unruly behavior directed at the opposing team”
I have been around a few college venues and simply put you have every bit as much chance of getting harassed in Austin as Lubbock. Journalism meet emotionalism.
"do routine things routinely"
don't tell the aggies
but a friend of mine who is a Louisianna tech grad was at A&M last wekeend and had food thrown at him from above while he was walking back from the concessions. Knocked his drink down and he had to get another. I thought only Tech fans did stuff like that….
Don't forget
Aggie fans like to punch each other and blame the other guys too.
welcome back chad,
where the hell have you been?

Thanks and kudos to the Austin Statesman:
I did not know that we had a guy named Omar Ontiveros on the team…sure enough he is on the roster !!
I am pretty sure that I have made my last start on any article the comes from Lineham’s pen…cil…cripes another inwardly focused story of life as a sports journalists…roll eyes.

1976
My freshman year. Our crew from Coleman had the best seats in the house (in the South endzone). Great game. Most of that same crew is going to be in Lubbock Saturday for this game.
These teams seem to be a very even match. Hopefully, home field advantage will help swing the victory to Tech. Guns up!
Can't work or sleep
I’ve been completely worthless this week. I have spent most of the week preparing for the voyage to Lubbock and reading just about every piece of jounalism refering to this game. Last night I watched the 2008 Tech-UT game once more. I actually feel like the crowd is going to be more hostile this season than in 2008. Lots of noise and it looks as if every possible tailgating space on campus is sold out. We will be in lot R-18 which is new to us so hopefully it’s just as good as the others. Can’t wait to get this one started!

"I’ve been completely worthless this week."
As opposed to other weeks? I mean it is footbawwwwww season, right? I pride myself on always being worthless. I think you can get a merit badge for that now.
"There's gong to be ups and downs, but you have to enjoy the battle." - Mike Leach
I think you are right about the hostility of the crowd...
.. a whole lot of pent up anger, helplessness, and outright meanness that has heretofore been directed at the untouchables in the tower is being re-directed (beautifully, I might add) at our favorite hate-on school of entitled scumbags (my apologies again to bags full of scum).
... never punt
All this talk
about UTs new running attack…..ugh.
I say we start Stephens and Jeffers in the backfield. Batch hasnt shown much yet so you throw him in there later to see what he has once theyve been tired out a bit. hell, throw Crawford in there for good measure too.

Has no experience and hasn't proven that he can block with his size.
Needs to prove he can bick up blitz and pass protect before we use him a lot in a big game. We should still utilize his speed though.
TT should have Shannon Woods come out to Lubbock
and hold a clinic on picking up opposing blitzers. I used to love watching him pass block.

I was so excited his freshman year, because once he got around the corner, he was gone, but he didn’t live up to ML’s expectations

I want to see a pass play every time Tech lines up with two backs
I want to see a delayed handoff on half the plays where all 4 recievers are sprinting downfield sucking half the defense with them. Neal Brown, please stop telegraphing every running play. The reason our yards per carry on the ground have always been high is because our passing attack distracts half to 2/3ds of the defense on the plays where we do keep it on the ground.
Stop trying to run it up the middle on 1st down just because that’s the way they did it at Miami when Jimmy Johnson was coach. Quit trying to change an offense that was one of the best in the nation. You aren’t improving things.
Rant over.

Just don't be predictable (Leach vs OU 2008)
Just mix it up and show them new looks. Leach in 2008 vs OU didn’t. Brent Venables knew most of our plays and knew are audibles at the line for that game.
Great journalism
On the SI article. It’s refreshing to read from a perspective that it’s not a mistake if we beat UT. Sometimes we are just better. That’s what make me most mad about 08’. We kicked their butts and were better almost to a man on the lines. And yet it was this big upset and we had to comeback. They got lucky to be in it. These days, if we ever beat anyone of note its an upset and shocking. Whatever, I’m pissed. Lets play football.
