Keys to the Game | Texas Longhorns vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

KEY 1:  NEAL BROWN'S IDENTITY

This is perhaps the most exciting aspect of Saturday's game, which is we're going to find out very quickly what Neal Brown thinks of this offense and and some insight as to what his identity might be.  This isn't to say that Neal Brown hasn't coached against some talented teams.  This isn't to say that N. Brown hasn't ever seen a talented defense, but I doubt that N. Brown has had the athletes and skill positions that he currently has at Texas Tech available to him at Troy.  N. Brown has a lot of options and I think we're going to see whether or not N. Brown is going to try to dictate the offense to Texas DC Will Muschamp, or whether or not Muschamp is going to force N. Brown into some bad offensive play calling.  If I'm N. Brown, I do what this offense does best, which is keeping opposing defenses off balance.  I'd love to say that I'm 100% confident that N. Brown is going to out-smart Muschamp, but this has to be a huge opportunity for Brown.  I'm just hoping that he doesn't over-think how it's all going to work.

And one more thought on the offense, which is that I hope that the offensive line's film session opened up with the Sergio Kindle hit on Taylor Potts.  Not a hand was laid on Kindle and that's unacceptable.  Perhaps the biggest challenge of the game is going to be how the offensive line plays.  Not only will they need to keep the quarterback clean, but they need to be pile-drives and space-movers when the opportunity arises.

More after the jump.

KEY 2:  SHORING UP THE RUN DEFENSE

If you watch closely on either the SMU game or the New Mexico game, it's clear that when the defense gets to their assignments and plays their gap, this defense really works.  What didn't work against SMU was ILB Bront Bird missing assignments and SMU gaining 109 yards in the game (this includes sacks).  Against New Mexico, the rush defense was much better as the inside linebackers are starting to figure out where they need to be and how to fill gaps along the line.  New Mexico rushed for 97 yards, 45 of which was the fumble recovery for a touchdown (not a true rushing play).   I think the line is still trying to find a balance between just rushing up the field and run containment, but I think they're getting it.  Of course against SMU and New Mexico the quarterback was in the shotgun for almost every snap.  That will be different with Texas as QB Garrett Gilbert will line up under center and the defensive line will need to be wary of draws, play-action, etc.  DT Colby Whitlock mentioned something today, which was that he was asked why he like DC Willis' blitz-happy defense and here was Whitlock's response:

"He broke down charts of when he likes to blitz. And he pretty much likes to blitz on downs one through four," Whitlock said. "I like it because...sometimes, that gives me a chance to be one-on-one with the center. I feel like that's a battle I can win every time."

This is what we're talking about, which is winning one-on-one battles each and every play.  Texas Tech obviously isn't going to win every one of those battles, but this is what each of the defenders hope they can do on each and every play.

KEY 3:  ATTACKING  VS. BEND-BUT-DON'T-BREAK

There's been quite a bit of consternation about the number of yards given up against both SMU and New Mexico.  I'd just like for everyone to keep in mind the alternative, the dreaded bend-but-don't-break defense that we loathed last year.  The best defenses in the country can play any scheme because the defenders can beat those individual matchups referenced by Whitlock.  It doesn't really matter if it's a soft 4-3 defense or an attacking 3-4 defense.  There are pros and cons to each, notably that if in an attacking 3-4 defense where an extra defender is blitzing on almost every play, it literally leaves your cornerbacks and safeties on an island.  That means that if the opposing quarterback and receivers can connect, there are going to be big plays.  Of course the defense combats this by having lock-down cornerbacks, which aren't exactly growing on trees.  Texas Tech's cornerbacks are young and thus far they have been prone to long pass plays.  But they've also made plays.  All of last year, the team had ten interceptions for the year.  After two games, this defense has five.

Last year was an incredibly successful year in terms of getting to the quarterback, where the team averaged 3.08 per game for a total of 40.0 sacks for the year.  This year, and this is against non-conference opponents, so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt considering the sample size, the defense is averaging 4.5 sacks per game and projects to have over 50 sacks by the end of the year.  Despite the thoughts that the defense isn't getting to the quarterback and isn't making plays, well, thus far, that's just not true.  The defense has given up quite a few yards, but you just can't have it both ways (playmaking defense AND gives up zero yards) immediately.  If I'm DC Willis then I think I try to bring as much heat as humanly possible and see how Gilbert and the Texas offense reacts.  Willis can always back off a bit and the Texas Tech defense knows how to play it safe, but there's nothing wrong with giving something up early to the Texas offense with the prospect of putting some serious pressure on Gilbert.

One thing I enjoyed...

watching the SMU game was that the SMU D was so winded. It really was good to see them constantly showing the D with their hands on their knees and hips trying to get a breath, and then panning the sideline and seeing everyone sitting down with their heads hanging down. We didn’t see that as much against NM because of the short field situation. I really hope to see the Whorns dragging, even if it is only half as much as SMU did.

Ok, I see the internal contradictions. Obviously, if our D is able to really get going and make some things happen, we will have a shorter field, etc.

Doh…

Forget it. I get confused when I try to deal in tangibles.

Peace

The SMEW defense is not the EUUU-TEEEE defense...

They don’t run out of breath, stud athletes and all, highly trained…take one breath per quarter only….etc…

The thing is the Horns have to play perfectly on offense. The Raiders defense can toggle back and forth between the all out attacking, 3-4, blitz and stunt roll the dice attacking defensive scheme and the back off don’t make mistakes we have more guys in the box than you do , 4-3, bend but don’t break scheme.
In a word Coach Willis has the intuitive here and it’s up to Greg Davis to rest it away from the Raiders.

Well said on key 3

Tech at home, with an aggressive D and rabid fans should be a nightmare for any team. The more the crowd can get behind big defensive plays, the faster a teams morale drops.

This D has the potential to really put pressure on Gilbert.

I see a few big plays on us, but even more against Texas. Watch for penalties during this game, no small ones either.

Still pissed about the no call

by RdrPwr on Sep 16, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

That no call allowed a fumble in the UT Red Zone

That was a 7 point gift. Much like the block in the back flag on Shipley’s punt return TD the previous year THAT THEY PICKED UP OFF THE FIELD. Once they realized to would give seven to their beloved Horns, they waved it off.

It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?

That reminds me - I need to start my lower register vocal exercises

Because I’m sure I will be booing the Big 12 Refs again Saturday night for some new 7 point gift they hand the Horns. The Tech game is like Christmas for the Texas Longhorns as far as officiating goes. Gifts here, gifts there, gifts everywhere.

Doesnt take much

In a close game the momentum can turn and a seven point swing becomes 14 or 21 considering the killed drives

We finally arranged for Pac 12 Referees to officiate this game

Which means UT loses for sure. Without the help of Big 12 Refs Texas would have lost the last four games against Texas Tech.

Unless we can get the refs from the NM game..

I think we can expect a +7 for uT no matter what. I built that in to my expected final score. If they don’t get the freebie we win by 19, if they do (and the will) we win by 12.

Until last Saturday we always wore the black hat. But that's a whole other controversy

The new Auburn uniforms Tech wore last week are kind of a sore subject. Best to let sleeping dogs lie.

However nonchalant they try to be...

I smell panic on the wind from Austin. I’m a bit less than half the way between Austin and Lubbock, and the panic is palpable. Hopefully, it doesn’t fully manifest until Saturday.

by antiswarm on Sep 16, 2010 1:43 PM CDT reply actions

Do not forget...

Not sure if it was on the same series, but when Potts threw the intercept deep in our own end, there was a true tackle on a receiver where the ball was thrown. That is why the ball seemed to be thrown right to the Texas d-back, the receiver had been tackled right in front of the play. To this day I still think there was a referee trying to pull a hankie out of his pocket after crab caught the ball but he must not have been able to get it out before the fans rushed the field. No way would the TV rating gods let UT lose the game to us in Austin last year, they needed the UT matchup with Bama or Gators. I hope they just let the boys play this year, no favorites either way, let it be decided on the field. BTW, how can it not be helmet to helmet when one helmet sends another helmet off the head and to the sideline?

Regarding Coach Brown, the young one in Scarlet and Black

If any of you knowledgeable Tech fans see him running a little wild eyed and everything, offer him something from your boot to help settle his nerves….it is a good cause.

The illegal and dangerous hit to Potts --- no flag

Key 1 - is spot on the money. NB needs to take the reins but not overanalyze the situation. Hopefully NB and CTT have been going over every scenario that Muschamp might use.

Here is the link to the illegal hit put on Potts by Kindle:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8dCZIgMXWo

All Red Raiders should watch this clip to muster up more steam for the stomping we will give Texas on Saturday.

I live in the Austin area and Mack Brown calls in to a country radio station every Thursday morning. I remember listening to him last year when the radio personalities asked him about that hit. Brown who usually is smooth as glass in his conversations got tongue tied and slowly explained that Kindle’s helmet hit the shoulder pads and then sort-of, kind-of slid up and then hit Potts helmet. Listening to Brown stutter his way to an answer made me so angry because he knew UT had gotten away with an illegal and dangerous hit and he was trying to justify it.
If the coin had been flipped and that type of hit had been done against McCoy the orangeblood nation would have been screaming foul and most likely a flag would have been thrown.

Also, last year the Austin American-Statesman ran a ¼-page picture of the hit and it clearly showed Kindle lowering his head and using it as a battering ram against Potts helmet.
(This link shows pics of Kindle – the hit on Potts is number 25 http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=sergio+kindle+texas&FORM=IGRE&qpvt=sergio+kindle+texas# )

It was a very dirty shot.
Maybe the karma of Mack Brown and Muschamp not owning up to the bad hit led to the hit against McCoy in the NC.
What goes around, comes around.

I hope the officiating crew does a better job on Saturday.

I am hoping we get at least 3 to 5 sacks on Gilbert.
Tech’s Defense needs to stop the ut Offense and let the Red Raider Offense rack-up all the yardage and eat-up the clock.
Here is hoping for a Tech 42 – UT 18 score.

One thing to remember

I was worried about this new staff and how familiar they can be with the UT schemes, but remembered that our new and talented Defensive Coordinator went against UT last year in the BCS championship game as Alabama beat UT. Thats comforting to know. I wonder if he has contacted his old defensive coaches at Bama and reviewed the notes from that game. Go Tech, Beat the Horns
