lay off Potts
Shouldn’t blame Potts for being Potts. He’s not deceiving anyone.
Having said this, it’s completely warranted to get on coaching staff for selecting Potts as starter.
Can also get mad at our new look offense….soft routes by WRs. No screens, runningbacks rendered nonexistent. Cluster……..
Yes sir
The playcalling was terrible, our offensive line play was pathetic, and whoever thinks our starting QB is still the cat’s meow is just plain dumb. The defense was amazing, Lacour is a punting beast. Done.
surprised
I’m surprised how many people are posting how things would have been differnt if leech was here. i think it wouldhave been much worse.
Yes, this is a tired argument.
I understand why people are making the comparison, but I don’t understand how it’s productive. Leach is never ever ever ever coming back to coach this team. It would seem that a better use of everyone’s time would be to critique how the offense is different (how about a disappearance of the screen game) or what could be done to make it better, but I doubt that’s going to happen.

YOU DON'T GET IT!!!!
Seth: STOP with the constant “Leach is never coming back” and “I don’t see how it’s productive” BS!
Of course everyone is going to compare this year versus last year. And no Leach is not coming back but what should we do – simply give up and use 2010 as a base year?
You contradict yourself by saying a better use of time is to critique how the offense is different! That’s what people are doing when they say “Leach would never have done that”!
You, and other apologists and loyalists must face this simple fact: Tubbs ruined the most prolific offense in the country! P-E-R-I-O-D! In less than 3 games, his “tweaks” dismantled an offense that could score from anywhere on the field.
This NASCAR offense has a flat, a blown engine, out-of-gas, and no driver.
Tired argument? Get over it!

I would love it if just one of your post didn't make you sound like a religious zealot
Or was rooted in any fact. What was the score if the last Ut Tech, pretty sure we lost by 10, who cares how many points we scored a 10 point loss us a 10 point loss. This season looks exactly like the start of last season, except with fewer penalties, fewer interceptions, and we haven’t lost to Houston yet. I have no problem with the some of the more skeptical posters here because they present solid factual arguments, and in some cases make me laugh. But in my opionion sir, I have seen bums with the end is near signs in the streets if Manhattan who appear mire credible. If you want to score 40 points and still lose turn in your Tech fear and go watch ECU, they are still pirates, don’t play defense, and had a he’ll of a game last night I hear.

Please find where I’ve ever been an apologist for the new staff and please find where I wasn’t upset that Leach left.
I’ll try to go through your points.
1. I have never asked anyone to not be critical. If anything, DTN is a place where people can be critical.
2. No one was more upset when Leach left than me. Leach was our very own unique individual and he was taken from us by an administration that was inept. I can’t bring him back and I seriously doubt that he will be the head coach of Texas Tech in the near future.
3. If you tell us each and every week that the offense isn’t as good as Leach’s what are we supposed to do with that information? Nod our heads yes. Of course. Leach is an offensive genius. What I’m asking isn’t to not be critical, but tell us how or why the offense is different. Spitting out total offense numbers is great an all, but it simply proves that Leach is still an offensive genius. Great. Thus far the current staff is behind what Leach did. I don’t think I’ve ever made the argument that Brown is as good as an offensive coordinator as Leach. I have high hopes for Brown, but right now, he’s got to get some things right.
4. If you think I’m being a loyalist or an apologist, then whatever.
5. You again state that the offense isn’t as good. Great. I want to know why or how it gets better (if it can). You just want to tell us that it’s not as good. Great. I don’t think anyone will disagree with your premise, but in my opinion, it needs to go deeper than that.

I'm not the coach!
We are saying the same thing, though my comments are harsher. It goes without saying (though I will say it anyway), that I would prefer that Leach still be our coach (and all of the wackiness and peculiarities). Why? He put TTU on the map, and we had the most prolific offense during his coaching tenure. I fully realize he is not coming back, and I’m not advocating such. I’m a Tech fan and will be happy if Bozo the Clown was coach so long as Tech was a winner!
Now that I’ve cleared that up, because I’m not the coach, I cannot tell you how it can get better – that’s Tubbs and Brown’s job. My “job”, or role as a Tech fan, is to simply state my factual observations.
With the exception of a few changes in players, the primary difference between Tech 2010 and Tech 2009 (notice I make no mention of Leach) is the type of offense, the type of defense, and the coaches. It is impossible to ignore, and it is impossible to not compare. It’s all we have.
It is my opinion, based upon facts (stats, record, play, etc.) that the Air Raid offense is far superior to the NASCAR offense. Why? There are many reasons.
* We are trying to set up the pass by running. Last year we passed, and used the run as a surprise element.
* We are built to pass, not run. Yet we try to run a power game.
* The O-lineman no longer set up with wide splits. This causes the lineman to hold their blocks longer.
* We throw inside the hash marks into traffic. Last year we threw outside the hash marks and were successful in YAC.
* We now have the center call the snaps, not the QB.
* We now have 2 backs in the backfield. Last year we had no backs more than 70% of the time.
* This year the receivers have to run certain routes. Last year they ran to the open space.
* Potts seems too deliberate, too mechanical, and immobile. No change from last year.
I know there is more I can say, but my point is that after 3 games, I see a different Tech team with a different offense that is a whoesale departure from what we’ve been used to for 10 years.
Losing by 10 points to the #6 team in the country is not necessarily the end of the world. But losing in the fashion we did is of immense concern. The very key factor that made Tech a national powerhouse was the offense. That seems to be gone, and there’s nothing of the new offense that makes me forget the Air Raid.
I was excited when Tubbs was named coach and he said he would only “tweak” the offense, but create a power defense. I like what James Willis has done of the D side of the ball, but to me the O side needed no tinkering.
With the loss of the Air Raid we’ve lost our idenity, and the ability to seemingly score from anywhere, anytime.
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
I don't think you're reading any of the questions I'm asking.

Yes tired of that argument
People forget that we did not do much better in similar games last year (UT, Houston, OK-State, Aggies for example).
Wrong!
One of those touch downs were by Sticks. He started the first half and we went into the half time leading the game (10-7). Potts started the second half and result in the second half: 7-17 (Okie state took over because Potts stalled our offense).
Wrong about what?
So Sheffield scored 7 points and Sheffield scored 7 points? If your position is that we weren’t any better last year than we were last night, you’re just wrong, and suspiciously so. Potts had more yards, more YPA, and one less interception. I think Sticks is better, but we can’t just say “Well last night was Potts’s fault” because it wasn’t JUST his fault. The offense looked as dead as it has since TCU in 2006.
Your comparisons, though, are LUDICROUS.
As i stated elsewhere:
Texas 2009: We outgained them 414-340 yards (they had 320 last night) and we scored 3 offensive touchdowns, all in the second half. Touchdown drives of: 61, 84, 88.
Houston: Four offensive touchdowns, 484 total yards.
Texas A&M: Team had 520 yards and four touchdowns offensively. Potts had 310 and averaged 8.6 yards per attempt, which is moving the football at a very high clip.
Jef, your are so fumblingly off-base here that I am questioning your sincerity. What is this really about?

Ill prepared. No screens. Katfish determined to run first. No nascar. Defense good but same as before. We get them in 2nd or 3rd and way long and let them off the hook. Looked like they used a dartboard to select the plays. Texas is not a top ten team. Seriously? 144 yards of offense? Welcome back Spike

I can't add anything that hasn't already Ben said
I actualy thought the O-line looked fine in the first half, another story of the other team making the adjustments at half. The second half the line absolutely fell a part.
I don’t understand the QB swap for one series unless it was injury related. Both Gilbert and Potts looked mediocre…..key difference, Potts is a senior. Then again Sticks looked absolutely dishshovled back there, he looked like he coulnt wait to get rid of the football or get out of the pocket. Qb wise we just had no where to turn.
Scott Smith is an absolute beast. Sacks, tip balls, interceptions, constant pass rush. I can’t wait to see him next year. If you take away the game changing penalties, the stats would say we have one of the best secondaries in the game right now. All in all, the staff gets an A+ from me for being to demonstrate such a defensive improvement this fast.
Brown, he had a bad game, and was clearly out coached, as was Matt Moore. For that matter so was Cumbie. Our recievers had a defender in the hip pocket on every catch. Poor techniquevgave them no space, no separation, and all we could do was hope for PI penalties that never came.where’s was the creativity? Ben Mcroys play against SMU was far more creative than anything we saved for UT. Where’s the bubble screen, the delayed shuffle pass, where was Jefers, where was Torres, where was Zou?
Great first half of football, we go into locker room tied with a top 5 team. Second half was the tale of how a more experienced defensive staff of Muschcamp makes the adjustments, and paralyzes the inexperienced Brown. Must get better, must learn from this.

I guess you have higher expectations?
We go into half tied, after rallying back behind strong defensive play against a top 6 team. We were one bad snap from being up by seven at half. For me, given the history of the series, I was pleased by that effort, we put ourselves in a position up to that point.

Not that it matters
But his second play was an incomlete pass to a double covered receiver that should never have been thrown, and should have been picked. There was zero indication he wad ready to enter that game.

Potts has thrown into double coverage
All 3 games consistently. At least sticks pass to batch was where he only could catch it (outside shoulder). Potts looks where he is throwing from the snap. If sticks blows, we would be better off playing doege, et al.

Well remember how I asked why Potts doesnt throw the fade?
Think I figured that out on the one fade thrown to Franks last night. Franks had a step on UT’s #8, but the ball was thrown behind him and he was forced to break up the pick.
Impressive post
from your mobile – hopefully a blackberry and not an iPhone.
I would actually say it was a really weird first half. We could have been down 28-0 or we could have been up 21-14.
I thought Gilbert played pretty well – his receivers couldn’t catch a cold. Two of his interceptions were due to deflections on very catchable passes.
Defense played well, but gave up 320 yards. Last year in Austin, we gave up 340 yards – and in that game we were suiting up the trainers to play on the D-line.
Last year in Austin, in Potts’ third game, he threw for 420 yards. This year 158.
Even though the scoring differential was the same, we were in the game last year until the last five minutes.
This year, after the third quarter, I don’t think there was a lot of optimism that the offense had any chance of getting us back in the game.
Last year we played against the real number 2 team in the country. This year’s Texas offense is nowhere near as good as last year’s UT offense.
This was our year to knock out Texas. We blew it.
The real silver lining to this game is that TAMU, OU, Mizzou, and Houston look way worse than I thought.

Agreeing here with you and LR
Brown just seemed to overmatched in the second half play calling. The first half we saw UT blitzing, the line was picking it up, and Potts was able to step up and throw to some degree. But as soon as UT quit blitzing, and went to speed rushing on the ends we had no answer. The ends blew right by, and both Potts and Sticks refused to step up in the pocket and instead took deep sacks. Ut made the adjustments, we didn’t…..feels a lot like last year.

I could not stay up for this game that started at 3:00am local time. I had to be ready for Sunday morning. Now I am glad that I did not stay awake. Having read through the DTN game posts and watched the animated drive chart I am completely disappointed in the coaching staff. Like in karate for every action there is almost always an appropriate reaction. To me it seems the coaches stuck to a game plan that clearly was not working. Where were the adjustments? Where was the plan B and plan C? Why not try a third string QB since Potts was constantly 3 and out?
The elephant in the room Saturday was the non-existent offense.
"Coaching from me, all the way down, I thought it was a very poor performance," Brown said.
Taylor Potts will take the blame for this game in many corners. He’s the quarterback, he’s the popular target, and it was him who threw a killer interception with Tech driving in the second half of a tie game. But did any part of this offense look good to you? Be it Potts or popular Steven Sheffield at quarterback, it’s an offense dead in the water with no better line play than the Raiders ran out there Saturday. No receiver was a consistent go-to guy either.
"Second half, they didn’t do much blitzing; they just defended, and we weren’t able to get the running game going against a four-man front," Tuberville said. "And when you can’t do that, you can’t throw it down the field against seven guys with speed like they have."
The above quotes are signals of coaches who do not know how to adjust. I am no expert. I have never played the game. But, in real life you can not give up. You have to make adjustments. You have to find a way to move forward. There has to be a screen pass or something to loosen up the opposing defense. Somebody with experience please tell me what might have worked.
by Distant Raider on Sep 19, 2010 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions
Tubberville thinks that running sets up the pass.
Not with our talent. We use the pass to set up the run. He’s got it backwards and if that doesn’t straighten itself out we’re in for a very long season.

“It wouldn’t matter if Sticks started or Potts. The offensive play calling was so atrocious…neither would have succeeded. Brown did not catch on to what UT was doing and change the play calling to attack it. I don’t know if he just was not smart enough to figure it out…or if Muschamps just out coached him. You can’t bring the Sun Belt play book and expect it to work in the Big12. Better and faster defenses. Today…Texas made Neil Brown look like a High School coach. Clearly he could not see what Texas was doing and did not know how to make adjustments for it. Sticks or Potts…both would have had the same results.”
I agree that there seems to have been a complete lack of adjustment to what the opposing defense was doing.

I am not ready to make an assessment on Sheffied and the rest of the offense
because they never really got a chance at all. For the rest of the offense to work they need to receive the ball a certain number of times. Sheffield hardly got any chance.
OLine
So, So disappointed! The o-line has a lot of work to do. The QB was constantly getting pressured.
I was looking at the videos with Harrell at Qb
I noticed that Harrell would receive the ball and quickly run a few feet behind, this gave him more time to make his reads and throw the ball as the opponents’ D linemen would take more time to reach him even after they beat someone in our O-Line. To expect anything like that from Potts is impossible because he remains planted to his position thus putting him and the O-line under tremendous pressure.
This is sickening!
Welcome to a 7-5 season and that may be optimistic!
American farmers feed & clothe the world!
I don't exect a 7-5
if we have the same QB starting for rest of the season.
we do have Weber St to took forward to
"There's gong to be ups and downs, but you have to enjoy the battle." - Mike Leach
Potts the variable...
It’s true the Tech’s offensive line imploded in the second half. However, I’ve seen enough of Potts to know he’s just not the guy. I don’t remember Tech ever fielding a less inspiring qb. His bearing and body language often suggests he’d rather be anywhere than on the field, and I’ve seen little evidence that he’s established any significant leadership role among his teammates. Bottom line, Potts doesn’t instill confidence in anyone. Player or fan.
Of course, Potts was a singular piece in an offense that often appeared completely unprepared, and the dumbed-down play selection was less than imaginative, pedestrian even. I’m afraid this is a systemic issue and not something that can be easily tweaked.
After reading Tuberville’s post game commentary I’m not convinced at all that we’ll see significant improvement from the offense for the remainder of the year. To Tubs, a running game is the magical panacea for all football related ailments, including ill-disciplined play by the defense.
I was impressed by the defensive effort. Their performance deserved better from the offense.
I’ve been mulling this over..about Potts. Here is what bothers me most about him. When he’s hurt, he continues to play. I know this is the norm for most positions, but I think that the QB position is one where the player needs to be healthy. He needs to pull himself out if he’s hurt.
As for Sticks, I feel for him. He is in a very bad position in that he has a coaching staff that appears to not believe in his abilities. This has to be shaking his confidence. In the first two games, he got limited playing time. When he did play, he was fed mostly running plays. He looks very unhappy. The smiles seem to be long gone. Is the Spirit of Sticks gone??
As everyone has mentioned, the o-line fell apart. This in turn makes both QBs look bad.
It appears that Brown and Tuberville have put all their eggs in one basket, and I hate that for the Red Raiders.
He's a perpetual victim just like Tony Romo. They always have that sad/confused look on their faces
¡Viva los Matadores!
I see a lot of similarities between Tech and Dallas this year (especially after our great D last night), and I’m not bullish. We both have coordinators trying to reinvent the wheel because they’re scared as @j!!#¥€£ of their o-lines. We have a ton more talent (college vs pro) than dallas’ offense, however, so we better find a way to get the ball in our receivers hands.
Thats exactly what my wife said!
“They always have that sad/confused look on their faces” – jwhitettu. And she only watches football when I have it on. Its pretty funny to hear her talk trash about certain football players…
Really selfish of a QB with a jacked up throwing hand to not pull himself out. He’s looking over his shoulder and is playing scared. Just bench him and be done with it. If we’re going to have a bad offense, I’d rather do it with a guy who can run a little.

For me it's not a Potts vs Sheffield issue...
if season success rests on week-to-week QB improvement, I’d just as soon see an underclassman take snaps. At least someone that demonstrates a little emotional fire and leadership.
The defense played with an enthusiasm I just didn’t see reflected in the offense. The difference was striking.
At this point, I wonder what proportion of the offensive calls were authored by Brown versus directed by Tuberville.
I’d like to hear from someone more familiar with Brown’s past gamesmanship. How do last night’s decisions compare?

+1000...I want to know how much influence/say so tubs has during practice and during games...I thought he leaves practically everything to his coordinators and assistants???
Then what the fuck are we paying him for?
Is it just to pick out ties and purchase leather bound books?

Watch the Cowboys today.
I bet at some point when you look at Romo, he’ll have that victim look on his face. It pisses me off every time.
¡Viva los Matadores!
Especially if a wr drops the ball
He has that shoulder-hunched over look with his head down and eyes up – ugh!
Yeah, it's gross.

Grades
Selected players grades:
Scott Smith: A+, we found something special
Brian Duncan: A-, love the pressure he gets on the qb and moved well sideline to sideline Bront Bird: D+ (they give a lot fewer D+’s than D’s), arm-tackling, lost
DJ Johnson: D, gave up the most yards in the secondary, not great in run support
Tre Porter: B, love this guys upside, great tackler
Whitlock: A+, beat double teams to make tackles behind the line and pursuit was excellent, IMO co-defensive MVP with Smith, the announcer who said, “whitlock doesn’t look the part, but he’s awfully tough,” needs to have his rectum examined…with large forceps
Cody Davis: B+, Duane Slay in the making, already there in tackling will get there in coverage
Don't forget about Phillips. Played lights out.

Don't be sad.
There are still nine games left. We have to win 5 of them to go to a good bowl. The defense looked pretty good, had some stupid penalties but thats fixable. What I fear and see happening is the road to mediocrity. There was a fork in the road and Leach was the road less traveled (for damn sure) Tech took that road and that made all the difference. Now the road is before us again. Neal Brown took the path we are all to familiar with. Dockery and Moore and even the Sainted Spike followed that well traveled path to average. So what to do? I don’t have an answer. But that offense is about as uninspiring an effort that has been seen in a long long time. Sticking with the same things that are not working is the NASCAR road to failure.
Finally clear
Forget the names, let’s talk scheme comparisons (even though yall know I’m comparing Leach to Brown):
- Run game needs to produce to open up the pass. WTF? That is STUPID.
- This exact team excelled in the screen game until this year. One of the best in the country!
- If run not working, use screens and draws to open up the pass game.
- QB had more freedom to audible. We saw what happened when they only have 1 or 2 reads. When covered up, it’s oh shit what now
- No slants/intermediate post routes to get ball in space.
- Gotta go down field with the ball some to open up space in the short routes.
- tighter splits in o-line = no space to run the ball.
This scheme brings the splits in closer so it brings the D-line in closer in the box. Both Stephens and Batch excell when they get in some open space. We’re NOT an SEC running game. Hell we’re not a D-2 running game. But it’s not the talent or the effort, it’s the F-ing scheme!!!
Tubs and Brown have to get in their head that we MUST pass to open up the running game. It is NOT gonna work the other way around. SEC teams run to open the pass. WE DO NOT!!!

+1 mostly
Doesn’t matter right now.
Run to set up pass, pass to set up run. Offense looks like they rolled out an entirely new system last week. QB’s uncomfortable, runningbacks ineffective, wide receivers running soft routes / creating no space.
Neither Potts nor Sticks can make this thing work at this point. I would give Doege a shot. With Potts and Sticks injured in the Spring, Doege has the most experience.
Actually, I would shit-can the offense and have Cumbie simplify things and reinstall the Leach system.
Prairie doggin looks like High School stuff. I hate it.
How can you say Sticks can't make this thing work
with the limited playing time he’s received? Seriously?
I can say with certanty that neither Potts or Sheff can pull us out of this cluster fuck we now have as an offense.
The only think about our offense right now is that I am extremely offended by it.

At least with sheffield the D has to cover someone other than just Leong
That was how they beat our offense. Make sure Leong is covered, and we have no idea what to do with the ball.
Can't say for sure
Sheffield looked confused in the 3 series I’ve seen him at QB. 2 at the end of the game against NM, 1 short shot against UT. I’m assuming he didn’t make an obvious case for himself in the 2 scrimmages used to determine our starter either.
Just spit balling here. Doege may have the most fundamental knowledge of whatever the hell it is that Brown is attempting to do.
Me personally?
I think our O Line needs the wider splits. Covers lack of footwork by the tackles. Makes the D ends start from a further pt from the QB.
I also think the lack of separation by our WRs makes it difficult for the QBs to succeed. Appears to be muddled routes. Opposing DBs aren’t scraped from our WRs. Our routes also don’t put the other receivers in position to block downfield. The play ends with the catch. In the past, our offensive plays began with the reception, not the snap.
N Brown and Tuberville have a bye week to try and make the offense semi-functional. Pardon my disgust, I’m disappointed as hell.
Finally finished post game thoughts. Feel free to continue rants here or in the new post.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Wake up coaches! You are not at Troy or in the SEC! You have entered the SWC-BIG12-2 twilight zone conference where UT and OU control the conditions. Your old playbooks simply will not work here. Throw them away and become more creative. Have you seen Big Tex at the State Fair? Well, football in Texas is bigger than Tex and the entire state put together. You may not realize how much of a disappointment last night was in the minds of West Texans!
