OH MY GOD! HIT THE PANIC BUTTON!
This is the sense that i get from the consensus of the DTN faithful. There is cause for concern, but no need to slam on the brakes.
Yeah offense was the suck saturday, but UT's defense imo, is that good. No need to bring the LB's in when your front 4 are getting that much pressure. That lets you be able to drop 7 into coverage and cover up everyone all day. I do agree there should have been some RB slipscreens and some draws to slow down that pass rush but d line just collapsed our pocket seemingly at will. Potts as to take some, NOT ALL, of the blame. He made bad reads and forced throws that he shouldnt have. For all the Sticks fans, there was NO way that he was gonna be effective, not with that O line playing. We could've had peyton freaking manning back there and STILL lose. It all starts up front. Matt Moore better get his head out of his ass and find a damn o line over these next two weeks. This season(like last) will hinge on o line play. Coach Brown made some bad play calls. Its easy to say what we should or shouldnt have done. Hell anyone can be a armchair quarterback. Dont act like Leach ever had called bad games before either. And for everyone jumping all over Tubs and his double speak, heres this for starters:
White Helmets: Players wanted to wear them, he didnt.
Running the ball "more": we have maintained a 60-40 pass/run ratio so far this year. And i remember A LOT of people clamoring to run the ball more to since we got some studs at RB. Then you nitpick when we do run. yeah it needs to be disguised better but i think were just not calling the right kinds of running plays. Need some swing passes and some 1 HB shotgun running.
Defense: How can you sit there and say "i dont see an improvement over last years D." WHAT? are you shitting me? We have more sacks,INTs,TFLs, and FFs than we did ALL OF LAST YEAR. "Yeah but we gave up a lot of yards to a bad NM team." Theres more to it than just stats folks. Stats do have a place to make anything a valid point....but you must be high to say this years D isnt an improvement over last years.
We got two weeks to get it together, find an o line, get better on offense, and come out sharp against Iowa State.
Everyone just needs to calm down, drink more alcohol, and just chill out for two weeks. New turnover on the coaching staff pretty much means growing pains. Things werent peachy when the captain first arrived here on the south plains. Patience. Things could have been worse guys, we could have hired someone who we all didnt like and could be looking at a 1-2 or 0-3 start. then this place would be BANANAS. Same record at this point in time last year. Theres still a lot of football left to be played.

Say it ain't so Brother..
Yep we could have Lane Kiffin or Derek Dooley as headcoach and that would be so peachy…

I dont want to take over anyones post
but I want to say something. I completely agree. And if we really want our program to continue to grow on a national level, these are the times we need to come together, support our team AND our coaches. Taking a look around the NCAA and watching games I have noticed 1 constant in all the programs that have faded and are now coming back (i.e. NU). And that has been constant fan support even through the tough times. Yes there will always be rumblings about this or that, but in the lang run we all want one thing and that is to win. We can’t turn our backs on the tetam after 1 loss, or even 4. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM and WRECK ’EM TECH!

Agree to some degree
We have a great head coach who is very capable and is promoting our school like no other. We will eventually win under Tuberville and yes every coach has bad games every now and then.
The problem I think most of us have is our current state of offense and how do we remedy the existing problems. We need a solid QB to succeed and we don’t have that now. We need a solid O-line and we don’t have that now. We do have proven receivers and running backs but we are not utilizing them properly. Those are what people are most upset about and rightly so. Is our OC the problem? Do we need a different O-line coach? Can Neal Brown in his youth run this offense at this level?
I don’t know the answers to these questions but I don’t see these problems just going away with this one game. I see a major problems at QB and O-line. If I were Tuberville I would have Brown and Moore in my office today trying to convince me of how they will remedy the situation. I have faith in Tuberville as a HC and I would expect he is doing just that. We simply failed to capitalize on a huge win Saturday night and were ill prepared for what transpired.

this may be true
about the QB and o-line situation. I would open back up the o line competition and see who steps up over these next two weeks. We should also maybe alternate qb’s in a game. Let sticks and potts both get meaningful snaps in a game. Brown should watch film from last year and dissect what worked and what didnt under Leach. More rb screens, quick slants, out routes, run some mesh plays, smash, y-stick. you know, get back to some of our bread and butter plays.
people just need to be objective. yeah saturday was bad but it could have been a BLOWOUT if not for our defense rising up like it did.

I completely agree with you that our defense is what kept this game close. Pizza and Ice cream for those guys and bread and water for the offense. I just wish Brown would have realized what he had and made better adjustments. Very poor execution against a team that posed real competition. Potts is never going to be a good QB for this team period.

sad but true?
i like potts but yeah he too is starting to wear thin on me. against lesser competition he can get away with that stuff, but now that we are in conference play he needs to cut that out.

A great deal of us were pro Potts after spring camp only to find out he’s still lacking game time abilities against real competitors.

Potts is the problem
The offense will be alright with a different QB, any QB (Sticks, Karam, Doege, I don’t care).
They will be "better" .. Still have to go back

I feel sort of like the cheerleaders in Bring It On. We hired Sparky Polastri to come in and show us a new routine because our previous routine somehow got disgraced. He came in, we paid him a lot of money, and we practiced his routine to perfection. Then when the big meet came up we went out there and totally embarrassed ourselves.
Prepare for total domination…domination…domination….
You've seen Bring It On...
and admitted it?!?!?!

You're telling me you can channel surf past a cheerleader movie without stopping?
Either you have a wife looking over your shoulder or you have much better self control than I do.
It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?
Kudos to you wrenc...and Raider 1992 and RdrPwr...
objectivity goes along way. There are major effin problems. I would rank them this way…Oline (if this aint fixed, nothing is gonna work anyway.) Play calling. (CNB, get your shit together and either put back the slants, outs, quicks to the RBs or loosen the reins and let the QB’s call it at the line)… QB ( love both our QB’s but Potts looks confused and scared so did Sticks…I think the play calling is shutting them down…)
Soup the damn car up and let it run. Take the governor off.
And as an aside…did someone just bring up a really bad cheerleader movie on a football blog site? And expected anyone to have seen it so his point would be valid and understood? uh…fail.

heres how i see those problems(in order)
1.) O line-it all starts up front
2.)QB-i dont care who plays, i just want a competent qb to lead this team.
3.)Play calling- could have been better but i think UT’s D really dictated what we tried to do.

Yeah, we have given very little credit here to the ability of the Texas defensive coaches to put in an outstanding plan. The players executed the plan almost to perfection. They out muscled us up front and no coaching in the world can overcome that. And their DBs will go play in the NFL while none of our WRs will. We were out classed in this game. And in a few instances out coached, but I saw no huge mistakes by the staff for Tech after watching the game again.
We also need to tip the hat to the Texas DBs. I had lots of family at the game and from what they told me, there were at times WRs open, but by the time they broke free (typically on deeper patterns) the blocking was starting to break down and Potts had to get rid of it. The middle of the field was full of Texas defenders and when we did make a catch on the short passes, the tackling was outstanding. Our offense requires the WRs to make a move and free themselves to turn the short pass into a long gain. This group didn’t do that Saturday when they had chances. The WRs also don’t seem committed to blocking downfield like they need to be compared to years past That’s an effort issue.
I think Sunday we were all ready to turn the athletic offices into a big, black smoldering hole. But on some reflection and discussions, I think the reality is that Texas was just ready to defend whatever was coming. It happens. I trust this staff to coach our boys into position to win. They have proven it at other stops and I see no reason to think the staff has regressed in their ability since arriving in Lubbock.
compound this loss
with a new regime and us not looking sharp in our first few games and the groans intensified. The ship will be righted no doubt. Look at ND, they got all kinds of preseason love and i bet ppl in south bend are mashing their panic buttons. Same for dallas cowboy fans.

Lots of programs with more to worry about that we have…VaTech, Kansas, UCLA (even after beating Houston), Houston (wow…lost both starting and backup QBs in the same game for the year), Florida, etc etc.
exactly
it could be worse.
