Keys to the Game | Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Iowa St. Cyclones

KEY 1 | FIND ARNAUD

| THURSDAY | Reasons for Concern and Optimism |
| FRIDAY | Prediction Time |
I'm most likely not the only guy that still has visions of a running quarterback running all over the Texas Tech for defense, for seemingly first down after first down. And it really didn't even have to be a running quarterback, but just a relatively mobile quarterback (see Case Keenum and Jerrod Johnson). Those things still scare me and Arnaud isn't necessarily a guy that's truly a dual threat. Sure he's competent as a quarterback and he's a pretty good runner, but if there's a lane, he's a good enough quarterback to take that lane and do just enough to keep the Iowa St. offense going. I mentioned it yesterday that Arnaud is a guy that has a paltry 5.4 yards per attempt. The bad part for ISU fans is that Arnaud hasn't done much on the ground, averaging only 26 yards a game running for a 2.89/carry average. Of course, that factors in sacks and he's probably a bit better than that, but I'm guessing that the truth of the matter is that either Arnaud is hanging onto the ball a little too much or he's just not getting much space to run. And the Iowa St. offense has rushed for over 100 yards for three of their four games and in their only Big 12 game, a win, Iowa St. rushed the ball for 171 yards on 40 carries against Kansas St. RB Alexander Robinson led the way with 82 yards on 19 carries, freshman RB Jeff Woody had 6 carries for 43 yards and Arnaud had 13 carries for 50 yards. Although ISU didn't win this game, I think that this is how they'd like to run the ball each and every game and keep their defense off the field while burning the clock. I'm guessing that what head coach Paul Rhoads would prefer is to keep the ball as long as possible and much of that will be predicated on the Cyclones trying to keep the ball as much as possible.
More after the jump.
KEY 2 | FIND YOUR RHYTHM
We've talked about this, almost to the point that I'm ready to just leave this key to the game with the title alone. But that's not enough, at least not for me. It seems as if we've tackled this subject from just about every angle: the quarterback play, the struggling offensive line, the different blocking scheme, the lack of a running game, the offense is the same (or different) or something other than being a passable offense for what's expected at Texas Tech. We could continue, but the key that I think I've preached way too much last week and will continue to preach two things: offensive efficiency and (this one is actually somewhat new) find the offensive rhythm. There was nothing about the UT game that made me think that the offense found any semblance of continuity in just about any drive. The lone offensive touchdown was a result of a 25 yard run by Baron Batch and another 15 yard touchdown catch by Lyle Leong, but for almost an entire game, there didn't seem to be any momentum. This offense needs a confidence booster and it needs consistency.
KEY 3 | STOP THE RUN
I mentioned this above, but Arnaud's less than stellar passing performance thus far this year leads me to think that DC James Willis needs to load up front and stop the run. This of course means that the corners play on an island for most, if not all of the game and both the safeties step up and play closer to the line. I'm willing to hedge my bet that Arnaud and the Iowa St. receiving corps isn't going to try to go deep, especially if the defensive line and the improved pass rush of Brian Duncan and Scott Smith are able to pin back and get to Arnaud. The one thing that I do caution is both Duncan and Smith getting too far up the field and creating running lanes for Arnaud. It seems to me that perhaps the best way to skin this cat is to make sure that the line contains, the linebackers fill those voids and not necessarily worry too much about putting pressure on Arnaud, but rather make sure that he doesn't shake loose for any big gains or sustaining drives by continually getting just enough for first downs.
I ran short of time last night and was only able to get these three keys to Saturday's game. Let's hear from you and tell me what I've missed.

KEY 1 FIND ARNAUD: middle linebackers !!! AND additionally for the defense, play with poise, sand rolls for the entire team for any form of roughness or sportsman penalty—including coaching staff, admin, water boys, trainers, grounds keepers, vendors, Masked Raider & horse, cheerleaders, the band, flag bearers, well everyone except people in wheelchairs, with walkers, canes, crutches, wooden legs, etc….and for all of them, their equipment and appliances !!!
KEY 2 FIND YOUR RHYTHM: Seth, stated this as well as can be stated…when we see the O executing with rhythm, we will be seeing the team showing that it is playing with the confidence of knowing what they are doing. That they have gotten it ! It will be a thing of beauty !! We will smile and open our adult beverages with joy !!
KEY 3 STOP THE RUN: Uh, oh ! Somehow on my dial, this rolled back to middle linebackers…crap ! Well, outside LB’s also.
Goal for TallMike this game, watch the O-line more than the rest of the game to see if I can see the zone blocking stuff that I read about this week. Oh, and be sure to set the record function on the tv so that I can see the game and rewind…I have grand daughter basket ball duty this Friday and Saturday…not sure if there will be a conflict at this point.
as for me and my house, we chose the Lord.
Nailed it Mike
It’s the Middle that this defense needs to be concerned about. Also, finding that rhythm starts with a solid game by the QB. If the offensive leader is throwing blanks all day the entire squad will faulter.

Rhythm would be good
The O has to be consistent and get into their own “representing 2010 Texas Tech Offense” Rhythm.
This team has to find their own heartbeat and flow together and then get the adrenaline pumping strong.
Use the field, make all of the reads, hold the opponents DL, get yardage and get points.
NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
I look for ....
Whitlock and Smith to be crushing. ISU will have to
make adjustments to camouflage this ass whoopin.
Then lookk for Fahoko (?) and Duncan to clean up.
"uh, uh, well, uh yeah, I think the guys, uh played, uh pretty well in the second
half." The captains words, after uh, the insight bowl. You're the best Mike!
Please don't remind me of running qb's from Iowa State
Apparently it’s now labeled “The Run”.

Keys to the game # 4 & # 5
- Crushing any semblance of an Iowa State Passing attack. Bring pressure, double digit sack Arnaud. Blow up the receivers, sniff out any screens or shovel passes.. Keeping containment on whomever starts would be a must. The creating of a one dimensional Cyclone offense simplifies what the defense must do to dominate. Though it may sound strange my feeling is A.Arnaud is – or seems to be a better operator than G.Gilbert. He clearly doesn’t have the supporting cast but his mechanics and ability to read the field make him dangerous. I can’t help but feel that QB draws are going to be big part of what the Cyclones are planning to try and keep the Willis /Tubs defense on its heels.
#5. Zero punt or kickoff coverage mistakes. Though I’d like every possession to end in a score for the Raiders therefore rendering punting a non issue. The fact is we will punt and the Raiders damn well will return punts by forcing the Cyclones into multiple 4th downs. The Raiders are overdue for a long punt return. Keep the special teams play in the band of excellence thereby ensuring no opportunity for the Clones to stay in the game.
"do routine things routinely"
Offense
This really needs to be a game where the offense makes a statement and shows they haven’t lost the swagger (or proficiency) from the Mike Leach era. Potts had better prove he’s capable or there will be more chanting “no more Potts” when we get Baylor in Dallas. The offense has to move the ball well and not make drive killing mistakes. If we can get up a couple of three touchdowns and keep moving the ball, it’ll force them out of their comfort zone and they’ll be the ones making mistakes. We were close last year with a&m but we let off the throttle when we got up by 14 and lost our momentum. That was plenty ugly as we all know. Potts has to play a complete game for this to happen.
The defense needs to be solid against the run; if we can force them into 3rd and long, theyll be forced to throw. If they’re down a couple of tds too, I think our secondary has a big day picking off Arnaud.

My primary concern is the OL. If the QB is vertical with recievers open, we should be alright for the rest of the season. Not just against ISU. However, that has not happened yet against any level of competition. The desired running game will go nowhere if we don’t control the line of scrimmage. If you can’t pass and you can’t run, it makes for a long game.
KEY 1 FIND ARNAUD: This is what Willis was hired for and is probably an Achilles heel that has plagued Texas Tech for as long as I can recall. While Arnaud is not exactly a Vince Young, he does move well and seems to pick up yards when he has to improvise and run. As mentioned above, the middle needs to be covered by Fehoko and Bird.
KEY 2 FIND YOUR RHYTHM: Offensively Tech has been very inconsistent and the fact that Brown has “simplified” (sound familiar?) the offensive choices, the players can now be more certain in their assignments and make more natural reads and execute without having to think about what to do. As a result, the Offense should be able to have some rhythm over a longer period of time, leading to ore scoring.
KEY 3 STOP THE RUN: Same thing here as for the first point, i think. If the LBs do what they should against this team, the Cyclone RBs will not have any more room to operate than will the QB.

Find the bus and show up on time.
After blowing the opportunity to beat a very beatable Texas team, Tech better blow these guys off the field with their superior talent and depth. Screw the details. Play like your hair is on fire.

Key 1 solved and it's only Thursday?
I like this trend.
It's called the Air Raid. So why would you try to run it like it's 1992?
Earlier this week, Rhoads said that Arnaud starts on Saturday, but I think he and Tiller are similar QB’s.
Go Raiders . . .
