Synopsis of the Game: Texas Tech establishes the running game and Baron Batch runs wild on a porous SMU defense. The Texas Tech defense struggles a bit with a very good SMU offense, but I don't think the SMU defense can keep pace. I think the new Texas Tech fast-paced offense is going to be much faster than what SMU is going to realize. OLB Brian Duncan notches a couple of sacks in his new role as an outside linebacker and the defensive line shines.
Offensive MVP | RB Baron Batch
Defensive MVP | OLB Brian Duncan
Final Score | SMU Mustangs 24, Texas Tech Red Raiders 42

Tech had better be careful with these guys.
Defensively making them keep a blocking back in throughout the game would seem to me to be the start to dominating the Ponies offense. Hands up to take away passing lanes.
Tech’s offense just needs to stay on the field run 9 -12 play scoring drives and do it 7-9 times.Prefer to score every possession. (as always) NASCAR dosage looks to be high. Don’t kick field goals and just grind them up.
Special teams no muffed snaps, tackle in space. You get the picture.
"do routine things routinely"
Jones likes blitzs
But the way to stop the Run and Shoot is to hit the QB every play as fast as you can and as hard as you can. The Jackie Sherrill Aggies did it to stop U of H in the 80’s and beat them up physically in the process. The Philadelphia Eagles did the same thing to the Houston Oilers when they ran the Run and Shoot under Jack Pardee. With hidden blitzs or rushers coming from different directions I think our hustle and talent will overwhelm the Mustangs in the 2nd half after a close first half. I like 45-21 Tech. Batch runs wild and Potts to Detron Lewis eats the SMU defense for dinner.

Great historic Football knowledge CWeb
I like blitzing 2 or 3 to the same gap a time or two even conceding that they may get to the deep third (trust your safeties in this zone situation). Knock the kid on his ass a few times. The largest crow Padron has ever played for was abot 35k per June Jones quote. Get our crowd of hopefully 52k+ yelling after a few sacks and he may be overwhelmed.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Last I heard there were 5K tickets left.
Which means about 56,500 have been sold. Which is about the stadium record (I think we had 58K for A&M last year right after the expansion opened). Its gonna look pretty full but there will be empty seats. That being said, SMU 5 years ago would have had 46K at the most. So…
One other quick question.
Do you all like the flags or would you rather go back to the helmets? Thought I’d try something different.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
I think flags are cool
Because sometimes you can put different ones up there. And Helmets are a little too common in the mainstream media (ESPN). And we know we are not mainstream but real.

Go with the flags
Looks more like college versus pro.

I will hold my response
and watch the outcome of this game. If we win in a blowout, then it will be flags all the way or else we go back to the helmets :).
Kind of like the flags
Plus as mentioned below by cweber, you could do so many things with different Tech flags.

FLAGS
I am with the others, or most of them, on this. Helmets are used everywhere, even by me. I like the change-of-pace.
Tech-48; SMU-17

ESPN Article Forgets Tech
Caplin (also of FW Star Telegram) wrote an article for ESPN talking about TCU’s success against major conferences.
He failed to mention Tech’s come-from-behind thrashing of TCU in 2004 when he said OU and UT are the only major conference schools to have beated TCU in the last 8 yrs.

prediction
Final Score | SMU Mustangs 12, Texas Tech Red Raiders 42
Im looking forward to seeing the QB throw the ball deep to Alex and Detron.
Why let the facts...
get in the way of a great story line about the “great” hornytoads! If The High Plains Drifter plays his cards right the best college team in Texas will not betcu, atm,or ut but TTU!!! Final Score: TTU 49 paruna 17
The Red Raiders
run away with this one. The offense is fast and lethal; the defense owns SMU’s offense. This game affirms my hunch that Tech is a very strong contender to win the Big XII! Wreck’em Tech!
OMVP Taylor Potts
DMVP Scott Smith
Tech 52 SMU 14
SMU jumps out early
maybe 14-0 or 21-0 much like TCU ’04. Once we get collected, sniff some smelling salts, and maybe make some personnel changes/adjustments, we come back to pull out a squeaker in the 38-35 range.
OMVP – Torres
DMVP – Davis
RPOWEL2 wrote, "Maybe make some personnel changes/adjustments."
You’re not secretly hoping for a Sticks sighting are you RPOWEL2??
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
My Predictions
I think the NASCAR (ugh) Indy Car Offense (formula 1?) will be used to good effect in eating up yards and clock especially when used in combination with an improved (from 30% to 35% of plays as per the Drifter) running game.
The defense WILL endure growing pains and give up some big plays to the ponies. This will keep it closer for longer than we’d like. Conditioning will pay off in the second half as we put the game away in the late 3rdQtr.
Offensive MVP: O-Line
They will open up holes for Batch/Stephens/Crawford and keep Potts upright
Defensive MVP: Duncan
Only because he is the true leader of this D Unit. But I would NOT be surprised to see the game dominated by one of the new faces (Smith, Langley, Wade)
Final Score
Pirates of the Plains: 45
Ponies of the Southern Money: 27

SMU 27
TTU 44
SMU has a solid offense. I think they’ll have early success moving and scoring before the Tech defense settles in to the flow of the game. But they just don’t have the horses, pardon the pun, to keep up all game long. Tech pulls away in the fourth.
i see what you did there

Keep the flags goin!
Also, any chance that we could get mystery face-paint girl to pose as mystery body-paint girl this year? I love those SI swimsuit edition paint on bikini’s.
As for the game, Offenses trade touchdown for the first half and Tech gets it together on defense the 2nd half.
Tech 48
SMU 21
OMVP – Batch
DMVP – Whitlock
A good warm up game!
Tech 45+ with ease and that’s letting off the gas.
SMU 17
OMVP – Potts (yes I said Potts)
DMVP – Duncan
I expect a close first quarter and then Tech gets it going.

I will admit….I almost said Potts too

I love your optimism Raider1992
You’ve been very consistent in saying Tech will win this game big.
I’m with you. I think something like 45-28 with a couple of junk scores late by SMU.
OMVP- Pick a receiver
DMVP- Smith
Plus, I just posted my offering to the football gods on KWash’s post so it’s all good. Nothing to worry about.

You say potato, I say patato
You say NASCAR, I say Air Raid
Whatever it’s called, we will be hearing “Touchdown Red Raiders” early and often Sunday. As to our new defense? I have no idea.
I hope NASCAR doesn't catch on
It has a connotation of Deep South Bubbas. Not that I’m not one of them, but I think it would harm our academic reputation, whatever that may currently be, it can’t help when Muffy from the Upper East Side makes the connection between Tech and NASCAR. JMHO
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
I agree
When I hear NASCAR I think plumbers & automobile mechanics covered in tattoos shouting “Show us your t##s” to every woman who passes by their trailer house. That may not be fair, but it’s the general impression given by the sport.
Thank god I don't live in a trailer house.

WOW-That from a Trailer Trash University alumni. (Which in it’s self is suspect). Her hate runs deep from the beat down, stomp in the ### loss last year from atm. The team from Lubsuck that runs the very appropriate named NASCAR offense. Whoever named it that, congrats on embracing their heritage. "

Flags
Tech should win this game.
Tech – 42
SMU – 10
Offense : Baron Batch
Defense : Bront Bird
Wreck’em!!!
I guess I'll be the first......
didn’t really want to say it but ……come on guys! we are giving SMU way to much credit here. Sure they had a pretty good seaon last year but in a crap conference. The Jeep will have the D looking way better than the past Defenses. And they held up pretty good against passing offenses. Remember the big 12 is the most pass happy conference there is. The run in shoot will not hurt the red raiders. Maybe on big play but tech wins this one and jumps into the top 25 poll after week 1. I guess ill be the first to let the b@lls drop and say we will have a barn burner! WRECK’EM!

24-45 Tech
I’m really looking forward to being up14+ in the 4th and feeding the younger RBs the rock instead of still throwing.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
21-31 Tech
Our defense struggles early. Offense is more or less fine. Potts is “Nick”-esque but still throws a pick in the first half.
Early season jitters...
Tech – 45
SMU – 27
Batch and Bird get the hardware. Start slow and pull away late. Offense scores because we have the ball a lot…but make some mistakes.
Defense struggles early and then settles down. Secondary will get a work out and give up some plays…but we get enough pressure to be effective.
I want to see a few things to prepare me for the season.
1) Down the field passes by Potts. I need some confidence that he will be able to throw down field and not just check it out to a RB.
2) Big defensive play by the guys in the box. I keep going back to last year’s aTm game. I was unfortunately at that travesty. I really want to see us shut down everybody with in the 1st down markers.
Either way, Wreck ’Em Tech! Go get a big ’ol “W” and get this season started right.
Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates. – Life on the Mississippi
I predict.....
I switch from Miller lite to Coor’s lite sometime the first half. I also predict I dip a hole in my lip and have to drink through a straw for a week.
SMU scores on their first possession and we flounder a bit offensively in the first half. Despite being down at half, we find out that we can run Batch on them all day and do so. My hope is that the D figures it out in the 2nd half and its not a Zantac special.
Tech-31

Bad news
I just heard that Torres may not play.
He has re-injured his back which he originally hurt in last years bowl game.
That would explain his 2 catches in last years bowl game.
He hasn’t practiced all week. If he plays it will be a game time decision.
Good thing we have depth at those positions.
o sh__!?(*$^)(*@#&^)!(@*#&
guess my OMVP was wrong then: I’ll go with Olson.
Hope AT is not out long term – we need his sure hands and leadership.
Bad news for Torres
I hope he can get it fixed. Back problems can bother you for a long time, but hopefully this one will go away soon. He is a very good person and player and represents Tech well. My prayers are with him.

Over/Under on F-bombs (good ones or bad ones) in Sunday’s open thread is now set at 98.
I predict there will be 12 F-bombs flung in anger (likely all in the first qtr), the rest in joy. As in, “F*** yeah!! What a hit!”
you're going to lose money on this.......

Acceleration Offense
The up tempo Air Raid is more than Peruna can handle, it scores early and often. The defense is improved to the point of not being recognizable from last years team. Snob -U scores late to avoid the shut out. Final Tech 56 SMU 14. MVP’s TECH D-LINE, Batch. I also predict that OldSchoolRaider will stay with Miller Lite until the 3rd quarter and then go to Shinner Bock by the start of the 4th. Its a wild ass guess but I feel good about it.
Flags v Helmets
Frankly, I’d prefer pictures of really hot chicks wearing school affiliated attire.
Tech should win by more than three touchdowns or there will be trouble in River City. I like the score of 41-17.
Prediction Time
OMVP – Batch (I think we’ll stick with the run until they show us otherwise, which may not happen)
DMVO – Fehoko has a breakout game.
TTU – 45
SMU – 13
I think we will have a defensive score. And as always, Cody Davis is going to kill somebody.
