Why I'm Not Too Worried...
As I sat in the front row of Reliant Stadium behind the Rice bench on Saturday, I found myself surrounded in burnt orange loudmouths talking up some big game about their Longwhorns and how great they were going to be. As I have mentioned once or twice on here before, every year one of my closest family friends gives me season tickets to Rice home games, which I gladly accept as I love the world of college football and find the world of the under dog engaging. As it stands Rice is one of the only teams I will cheer for other than Tech, so cheering against the whorns this weekend is not too much of a stretch for me. What I saw was the most unimpressive UT team I have seen since the Chris Sims days, I am really not joking here, Rice won a small amount of games last year, and ended up near the bottom overall, and they hung with UT like they were contenders. Now the ESPN replays and such won't show you what I saw in the stadium, but several times I saw Rice march down the field seemingly at will, and on the flip side saw UT's offense get straight up SHUT DOWN time and time again by a defense that didn't even have it's starting defensive line in the game due to injuries...
To cut this short, as it stands today I think we have a great chance against UT... I know the overall score of our game doesn't reflect it, but we really did dominate SMU... I have watched the game again since this afternoon, and the only reason it was close was from our own stupid decisions, it wasn't from Potts throwing picks, or losing fumbles... or even SMU running serious game on us with their offense. In actuality, they only had one TRUE drive where they went down the field and scored on us, all the others were great field position set ups from bad special teams execution, bad 4th down calls etc. I mean we had the game well in hand when their "come back" happened, and it wasn't even that fierce. I think our D played extremely well, I honestly can't remember off the top of my head the last time we had 3 picks, a fumble recovery, and like 4 or 5 sacks in a game. For the first time out I think this D showed to be a formidable foe. Many will take this game as a 'we barely won' scenario, or a 'we almost lost it' type of game, but I never felt that even watching it the first time... I think this will be a great season for us once we get our footing, and if the game plan I saw UT unveil is what they plan on using against us... we are going to have a field day!
One thing above everything else... If I have to listen to Bob Davie cast one more TTU game I'm going to go ballistic on everyone I see! That a$$hat could barely say ANYTHING good about Tech all day, and all he wanted to talk about was how Fing great SMU was doing, and blah blah blah.... don't know why they let that failed disgrace of a coach get on TV and act like he knows what hes talking about. He wasn't good when he was at A&M and started the free fall that was ND football, I honestly think I'd rather listen to Craig James than him (ok maybe not that extreme but you get me)

Agree with the majority of this,
But most of all, agree that Bob Davie needs a muzzle.
UT, OU, they are both there for the taking this season. Do they drop in the polls even with wins? I say yes, yes they should. (Doubt they will)
However, still don’t see how we dominated in any phase of the game today.

It did sound like Davie had an on odd axe to grind against Tech. Not to mention the countless contradictions.
I don’t think we dominated in any phase either. But we didn’t get whipped in any phase by SMU. They only gained 109 yds on the ground. They turned it over four times. We were stellar on third down defense (4/13), while converting 50% of our own. We only had one turnover.
They got about as flukey a TD as we saw all weekend (right through Davis’ hands on what should have been a simple INT); the 92 yd kick return; and school record FG that kept this anywhere close. Sure, we probably could have put 60 on them if we clicked on all cylinders, but the same could be said for any game the last three years.
Conspiracy Theory Time!
I expect not to get ANY love from ESPiN announcers throughout the season no matter what! I’m sure their higher ups have laid down the groundwork and have adjusted their announcing rosters to ensure that there are no TTU apologists/fans calling the play-by-play.

If they find a way to use TTU to their advantage, good words will waterfall from their mics....

we most certainly have allot of stuff to correct, but as a whole, breaking out a new D and new coaches all around… I’d say we are primed to kick some tail, we didn’t look THAT far off today.

UT
I agree that UT may not be the team we thought they would be. I wasn’t all that impressed with their “great defense”. I thought Gilbert looked decent but not great. He may be in a few years but for now I’m not seeing anything to worry about. I think after this weekend it’s safe to say that the Big 12 south belongs to anybody.

from the sidelines...
Rice as a team went from nervous/scared to “guys we can actually do something against these fools” mode after 1 drive… it was really amazing

My biggest problem....
is still with Potts….What Harrel got really good @ was going 4,5 or more drives and putting points on the board….it appears that Potts top end is only 2 drives in a row….that just will not cut it if TTU really wants to progress…..I will root for Potts as long as he is the QB…but as a 5th yr Sr. QB in basically the same system TTU needs him to step up and produce….just WIN baby! Wreck’Em Tech
it would help if
Corndog wiped the grease off his hands and caught the ball. Same with Swindall

Agree and Disagree
I thought we looked pretty good considering the new staff, system, etc…especially on defense. While you point out SMU only had one legitimate drive, we had several that were started in great field position due to turnovers as well. You could say that most of our points came from the SMU QB throwing it right to us for the entire first half.
I wasn’t too impressed with the offense overall, but I’m sure they were pretty tight given the fact that the expectations were to produce at the same level, or better, than in the past. I thought the drive at the end of the first half was going to give us the momentum to put them away in the second half. That quick scoring ability is a Tech trademark and I was happy to see it surface.
As long as we improve week to week, then I think we’re starting from a pretty good place considering all that has happened in the last 9 months.
At least we aren’t Ole Miss!
true...
but one thing about those pics that were straight to us… Defensive pressure was the reason for it, the true unsung hero through it all, pressure from the LBs forced bad throws right to us… I think we will get allot more of these as the season goes on

agree
Great things from the game:
Nascar speed. ESPN missed Tech’s second play entirely. Too busy showing fancy graphs.
Pott’s 75 second touchdown drive before the half. Sweet.
Pott’s had no interceptions. (I will say lots of tips) Only sacked twice
359 yards passing, 53 attempts. 31 rushing plays.
The D was awsome in the first half. 3 interceptions. 5 sacks.
Downside of the game:
Pott’s looked nervous on his first two drives.
I think the heat took over the defense in the second half. ( I will say the D held 4th and 21 at the end).
Matt Williams wasn’t stellar at kicking.
You can say Nascar Jesus was trying to channel his Inner Pirate in the 4th, but come on. You just got stuffed on 3rd and 1. WWLD. What would Leach do? 4th and 1 at your 34 and you go for it and lose. And SMU scores a touchdown and gets reborn confidence. crap.
All in all, a good first game against a good team.
One more warmup game, then BEAT TEXAS!

Anybody else find it ironic..
That the ESPN lead in to the game featured footage from the Lubbock Cooper game and pirate crap everywhere?
