Big 12 First Game Stuff...

I have three things on my mind:

  1. Big12 Qb performance for game one...I focused on the starter, some teams added qb's or switched during the game.
  2. Big 12 Team Rushing performance, game one.
  3. Big 12 First game opponents.

Star-divide

Big 12 Quarterback performance

I used the NCAA Ranking formula it is one way of trying an objective view...as if objective matters.

The formula is fun...if you complete your first pass for one yard, you are at rank =108+;

if the pass is intercepted for a one yard opponent td, you are at rank =238+;

if the pass is completed for your guy for a one yard td, rank =438+.

Our guy did not rank badly.  Overall ranking is decent at 146, places him in the upper third/at the top of the 2nd quartile.  Yards/attemp is average, Yards/completion is average, Completion % is average.  Like a number of his peers, no INT's.  Led with TD's, and with total yards....kind of Air Raidish, huh ?

I saw two things from this, 1st the big rusher did not fare so well vs win...2nd it looks like the numbers are way up over all for the stronger teams in the conference...perhaps an indicator of things to come ?

Right !  Big deal !  I don't have an analysis, I am presenting this for your thoughts and comments.

Probing question number one:  how do you rank them ?  Number two:  what does the level of competiton say about the qb's perfromances, if anything.  Do the ranking before you comment on the qb's....

Hey, there is room for all thoughts, what does this competition say about any of the Big 12 teams?

Is there a QB in the Big XII from the list of yesterday's starters that has started more than 2 years?

Johnson, Potts, Jones, and Griffin have all seen substantial playing time. Would Griffin be considered a 3 year starter, since he really sat most of last year out?

Just looking at that list, it tells me that QB play will look much different than it has the past few years with guys like McCoy, Harrell, and Bradford leading the packs.

I’ve said it before, I really think that this year will be more defensively driven across the conference. I believe there will be more low scoring games, than blowouts. Also, I believe there will be a number of games won by the defensive play.

Yes....

And let’s have a category for “running back carries that should/could have been a fumble” or “defensive players that were ONE block away from a sack”
be more creative, and less unintelligent.

And a stat for QB on the bench that would have saved the world,

cured cancer, taught Sunday School to the third graders, and passed for 1000 yards……
if he had only gotten in the game.

I think our opponent was probably in the top 2-3 out of everyone the Big 12 played. I don’t know enough about some of those schools to rank them all against each other. A sample size of 1 is not all that useful .. I think we’ll start to get a better feel for comparisons between offenses and QBs in a few weeks. Right now I feel alright about our position with the understanding that “Tubby Tommerville” is on the case.

I think you are right merrik. Coaching strength plays big role in the difficulty factor of opponent

BTW good work Tallmike enjoyed the comparison watched QB’s Gilbert, Arnaud and Potts will see the others on the FSSW instant repaly shows.

Jeff Sagarin has ranked the Big12 teams as follows:

   8 Texas
  16 Oklahoma State
  18 Missouri
  26 Oklahoma
  27 Kansas State
  28 Colorado
  29 Nebraska
  37 Texas Tech
  51 Iowa State
  56 Texas A&M
  77 Baylor
 121 Kansas

And he has last week’s opponents ranked as follows:

48 N Dakota State
70 Utah State
74 UCLA
79 SMU
87 Illinois
92 Rice U
122 Washington State
126 N Illinois
138 Colorado State
139 Western Kentucky
169 Stephen F Austin
186 Sam Houston

I think last week’s opponents’ ranking helps me get past my own bias and see that we played a pretty good team last week. At least to the degree that these rankings have validity…by his admition, early rankings according to his algorithm are shaky. We can also validate outside our own bias to some degree that some of the teams putting up big numbers last week end, should have !!!

This is good...

information Mike. SMU will be a winning team this season and I’d say bowling. Seems like Tech always looks sloppy in some areas in the opener but I suspect this team will be ready for UT. Lots of room for improvement among the typical top 3 Big 12 south schools.

Running Game starts with Passing Game

Coach Leach made it clear that a good running game starts with a good passing game. I think the big difference here is that Tubberville tried to use the run to set up the pass. It is clear to me that Batch and Stephens are great in the open field. Linning up with a two back set usually means handing the ball off between the tackles. I don’t think we have a runninb back geared towards running between the tackles. Leach was genius in getting Bath the ball in open space and running past the defense when they least expected it. I hope that Tubberville goes back to a one back set and lets Batch and Stepehens do what they do best. Run in the Open Field. Go Red Raiders.

The running game can be set up by the passing game as we have seen.

Last year’s running game really wasn’t all that good over all…I am going to look at the O-line for both.
