Good News/Bad News
Special Teams
Good News: LaCour has one hell of a leg. He had 4 kicks, averaged 48.5 yards, belted one for 60+ yards with a hang time that was enough to have the returner swarmed when it arrived, and kicked another that was downed on the 6 yard line. I'm not sure if he had any punts into the wind, but he was solid all day. Punt coverage was also great, with Cornelius Douglas and others way down the field making plays on the return man.
Also good news was the kick returns. Eric Stephens hasn't missed a beat taking kickoffs and, while I hope that he doesn't have many opportunities to do so, I have a feeling he'll be taking one to the house at some point this year. And an honorable mention goes to Ben McCroy. Was nice to see the jackrabbit chasing down the returner to save the TD on that long return we gave up.
Bad News: Ben should have never had to chase down that return man. I was getting a bad feeling on our first few kickoffs that were returned: we were giving up way too many yards, giving SMU starting field positions in the 30's. I knew that broken return was coming, but alas, there was nothing I could do about it from my couch in Austin.
Also bad news were those field goal attempts. SMU is pretty good at blocking those, but our kickers have to at least make them work to block field goals. Carona's attempt was pretty much in the facemask of the rushing defenders. I'm guessing that with be a point of emphasis in this short week.
Taylor Potts
Good News: Taylor was a different man on Sunday due to one major aspect of his game changing. He looked comfortable and confident throwing the football, a confidence he never had last year. There were moments, namely the two drives sandwiched around halftime, when he looked every bit like the best of the Air Raid quarterbacks of old. I can also see the improvement in footwork coming out in his ability to move around in the pocket, something he did effectively many times in the game.
Bad News: Potts is still a man of habits. There were a few throws that scared the hell out of me, having just been lobbed off his back foot. While they were completions, I still had that knot drop in my stomach. He wasn't bad, it just wasn't as crisp as we were hoping, and I doubt that he's going to be getting much room from the fans when fan-favorite Sheffield is on the bench.
Defensive Line
Good News: We had pressure on the QB until the 4th quarter. Scott Smith is the real deal and was constantly in the face of Padron during the 3rd quarter. They had Padron intimidated during the first half, forcing bad decisions, and shut down the run well until June Jones realized we didn't game plan for them to run any draw plays.
Bad News: Kerry Hyder is not fast enough to be the end-man on the line. He will need to be covered either by the Buck LB or the Will or will be a liability in contain. It was a little frustrating to see our line get so close to drive-ending sacks, and that will be another thing that they focus on this week: finishing plays. One other thing I noticed: a lot of players played, but not I didn't see wholesale changes of personnel as I was expecting. We stuck with our first line through all of the first half and started to see a lot of our 2nd and third in the 3rd and 4th quarters. I expected that we'd have "starters" and then everyone else who would be run in and out during each drive.
And as another bit of bad news: this d-line cannot handle the draw play. We were good at getting up the field, but we were not very good at getting off of blocks and reacting to the delayed handoffs.
Defensive Secondary
Good News: These are some incredibly talented young corners and defensive backs. Cody Davis made one mistake all evening and that was even a freak play where the ball bounced off his hands for a TD. Otherwise, he was lights out. Jarvis Phillips, Will Ford, DJ Johnson, and Tre Porter were all excellent, and every one of those guys is a sophomore or younger.
Bad News: The secondary is very young. Porter and Ford seemed to make one big mistake each, losing coverage for a TD and a drive sustaining pass interference. Really, there's not too much bad news for the secondary, they were a huge surprise yesterday, in a unit that I expected to get torched.
Offensive Line
Good News: The line from left tackle to right guard was absolutely solid in pass protection. In 50+ attempts there were 7 knock-downs given up by the entire line and 0 sacks given up by those 4 players.
Bad News: New coach, same story when it comes to running from the Air Raid. We tried it more (37% to 63% passing), but we had a mixed bag of success. Anything up the middle failed while things to the outside tended to succeed. I don't know if it was the fact that we played a very vanilla line scheme (pretty much block your man, push him back, hope the linebackers pick the wrong gap to cover) or if we just weren't very good with run blocking overall.
Piling onto that bad news, it doesn't look like Chris Olson can handle being a starter at Right Tackle. I'd say that most of the SMU players that were introduced to Taylor Potts over the day came from the right side. In one sack, Olson flat out got beat while the other was more likely a running back's failure to take care of blitz pickup. I know Olson is one of the most versatile linemen we have, but I don't think he has what it takes to be an every down starter. I hope we get the right side of that line figured out before Von Miller starts rushing at us from that side.

I agree with every you said here.
Great write up, that was about as level headed an assessment as I have read. I also thought that while Potts took responsibility for all incompletions, there were numerous critical receiving drops or route breakdowns. Those mistakes were usually reserved for Ed Britton. It was annoying to see the issue more wide spread among the corps.
I thought play calling looked timid and bland, but now the staff has come out and said it held back the playcalling. This make sense as I saw no defensive stunts until the final SMU possession. I saw no screens, and Potts looked like his progressions were limited (which explains his Leong bromance).
Now Tubs just said last week that there was no reason to hold anything back. So this was either coach speak to throw off SMU, or convenient back filling after an over simplified game plan. Luckily for Tubs the proof on the field yields to the first option, and lends credibility to the idea that this staff, while not looking past opponents, has circled a game 3 weeks in, and doesn’t plan to fill UT’s film room with much to go on.

And don't forget...
one important stat….5 penalties for 39 yards. I was at the game and mentioned to our season ticket family that we have played a real clean, penalty free game compared to the last several seasons.

I was pleasantly surprised and had to keep reminding myself that SMU really isn’t that bad. But, the big question I have is where was Alex Torres?
Torres was out this week with a back injury.

i would have liked to see how this game would have gone (at least completion wise) with torres and zou in. Don’t forget, Torres was the most reliable receiver last year. I believe that Potts would have been around his usual 73% completion percentage if they had been in the game. Too bad i won’t be able to watch next weeks game… Guess i’ll have to wait for the whornes to come to town

I also found it laughable...
That some thought this performance was an opportunity to rehash the QB battle.
Here are the stats that matter:
1- We won the game
2- Potts threw for 360yrds, 4 TDs, 0 ints
If there is anything in that stat line that deserves criticism I would love to hear it, and then immediately mock you for your bat shit crazy expectations. Potts may go throw 3 picks in a loss next week, but with won game down, he had one of the best performances in college football this weekend. The dooms dayers who have leaped on any and every mistake on Sunday, prove that there is a troubled fans who simply don’t possess the abilty to be objective. But then again, I don’t think that surprises most of us.

What game did you watch?
So, you can’t be objective? If Leach were coaching, Potts would have had 560 yards! Tubbs is a plodder – and we’ll barely win games we should win by 21 points, and we’ll lose games we should win by a TD.
He’s more Spike Dykes than Leach. And we know how that turned out – 6 – 5, 7 – 4, 6 – 5, 8 – 4!!!!!!

Looks like you and I did not see the same game
The game that I saw showed me an improved Potts, though still making some of the same mistakes he did earlier, he did not have any interceptions. How many 560 yard games did Potts have last year by the way? Do you have a source?

I don't want to blow your mind....
But we actually have something called an offensive coordinator this year. So your assumption that there was anything at all the Tubs could or couldn’t do to affect the outcome of Pott’s offensive production shows that you aren’t paying attention. A gentleman by the name of Neal Brown actually calls all offensive plays for Texas Tech. But don’t let that little fact keep you from bashing Tubs if it’s what gets you through the day.

I agree with you. While our offense didn’t click Potts played a pretty good game. Yes there were a few throws that were off the mark, or a little hard, but a good reciever should be able to help his QB and catch the ball. Yes we looked rusty but this is a new system, new coaches, and a few new players that are out there. If we can correct our mistakes we will be fine this year.
I have to agree with you Kayakyakr Cody Davis is a beast. He straight up just hits people. I felt bad because he missed that INT, but he will be an outstanding player for us.
Potts having a good day doesn't mean he's better than Sticks.
Unless you have access to a parallel universe we’ll never know what Sticks would’ve put up. Pointing to Potts good, not great, stat line doesn’t do anything if you believe that Sticks is better .. just add 100 yards and another TD or two and that’s what you assume Sticks would’ve gotten. We haven’t seen Sticks run this offense yet so we don’t have any data to point to, and all the stuff from last year is well.. last year. I hope he gets some playing time against UNM next week, maybe in the second half.
We won and Potts did fine, but everyone knows that this defense wasn’t one of the best defenses Tech will see this year, the pressure they brought isn’t on the same level as the best teams Tech will see. People still pushing for Sticks are thinking about championships more than they are thinking about SMU and think Sticks has a better chance of getting the team there. That’s a perfectly valid opinion at this point.
When we’re undefeated going into Oklahoma with Potts having won every game I’d agree that people calling for Sticks at that point probably deserve some mocking.

Must agree with merrik
Potts had a good outing, and did bring home the win. BUT, I was just expecting to see so much improvement in his play that I would be downright impressed. I was not. It ended up being pretty boring to watch. Granted, playcalls and dropped passes hurt his cause, but Potts didn’t “make” anything happen either…
Potts could have done better.... yea
But you can always say that after a game is over with… Everyone can always ‘do better’… Unless someone has a 100% completion percentage, scores on every drive, and has no INTs, it’s easy to say that they could do better. It’s the first game of the year. Take it with a grain of salt. Potts did much better than last year. Sure, he made some bad reads, throwing into double coverage and such. But there were also some dropped passes. All of this will change once the season gets under way, once Brown hashes some things out with Potts, and once everyone starts to work together as a team…
Next week will be another test of sorts. Hopefully Potts will be able to relax a little more, and be able to make the correct reads before he throws. I just hope they don’t take New Mexico lightly like they did A&M last year (both teams we play(ed) after they were blown out).

Totally agree
I didn’t understand some of the dismay in the post game thread and basically just attributed it beers and such.
Frankly, I thought Potts looked pretty good for the first game. Was pretty impressed with how he moved in the pocket to keep plays alive and though his footwork was much improved. Granted there were times where we stalled offensively. But on a few of those drives we were a dropped pass from a first down. He made some really nice throws and I’d expect to see continued improvement.

TTUMAR......
mock me if you like but Potts has to, yes has to complete more than 2 drives in a row for TDs, he has to consistantly get to 4 or 5 for our Offense to the best it can be…..that is my only complaint, he just disapears for 4 or 5 series….he must flip that! Just think if we had added just 2 TDs at the end of 3rd and beginning of 4 th then it is 49-17. That’s what I mean! Wreck’Em Tech
I don't see anything mock worthy here.
I just don’t put those drive ending mistakes on Potts alone. There are blocking issues, play calling issues, and receiver issues that were way more evident than poor QB play…at least on Sunday.

Taylor "Three And Out" Potts played good enough to beat SMU at home
I think many if not most Air Raid starting QB’s of the past could and would have played better vs this opponent. I just do not want to read the papers on Sunday Sept 19th where Potts is praised to the skies for being able to withstand a beating in a valiant losing cause.
And I'll settle for.....

there was one three and out
when potts could have easily ran out of bounds for the first down… not sure why he didn’t. That’s one instance when you could say that sticks probably would have done better… But i think after they look at the tape, Brown and Potts will be able to fix a lot of these problems.

kayakyakr on miscue by the O line
We gave up a sack on T Potts 2nd or 3rd period. DVR recording failed saw it at thegame but can’t look at it to confirm. BTW ran into Coach Bob Davies ESPN commentator for the game at the Lubbock Embassy Suites. Nice enough. He said we are 1 -and 0. SO thats nice.
"do routine things routinely"
Actually, what he was saying that 4 of the 5 linemen didn’t give up a sack. I had to read it again as well. Basically, the sacks given up were from the right side, where Olson was not cutting it at RT.
agreed
I thought Olson looked down right bad at times. I think he’s more cut out to be an interior lineman.

A note on run blocking...
have you considered that every HS in Texas is running some form of the spread now days and that O-Line men just don’t know much about run blocking? Did you watch UT’s game? Same deal, they take a great spread QB make him go under center, he is having to look back to see where to go when he drops back. Their OL did not look any better than ours at run blocking. I think it is a skill set that just is not being taught in Texas football, and you know that it is new to Tech lineman. I am not making excuses, just trying to understand why they have such difficulty with this.
I still think TT is playing his cards very close to his vest at this point, there is no reason not too.
I also think UT is doing the same thing until they come to the Jones.
Same goes for OU until the RR shoot out.
FORZA ROSSI
Disappointed in Receiving Corps
Overall Potts played okay. He was not great, but he did not stink up the place either. I still think our best QB is sitting on the sidelines. Potts just does not have THE IT FACTOR. However, I was really disappointed in our recievers. I counted five drops and I think two by Douglass. We did not have one receiver break free and accumulate any YAC (Yards after Catch). Where was Alex. I don’t think Potts even targeted him once. I know it was the first game, and I saw some bright spots, but our season will be made or lost in two weeks. I hope Tubberville can create some excitement, that was a boring game. Go Tech.
Yup we needed Torres
but he was out with a back strain I think. After the game I felt like he would have been exactly what we needed – a dependable, sure-handed route runner. His absence was felt.
torres was covered

Two side notes:
1) This weekend was the hardest I have push the envelope (alcoholically speaking) in some time. 3 days and 3 nights of debauchery have forced me to take 2 naps today, my throat sounds horrible, and I spent from 3 am to 4 am lying in the fetal position at the bottom of my shower. Bring on UT.
2)I had drinks with the SMU film maker that sold his film to ESPN on the glory days of SMU, and it’s downfall. It will be entitled “Pony Excess” , and will air in Oct or Nov. Sounds like it will be interesting.

Olson disappointed me as well
I noticed he was getting beat too much. Even plays where the action went the other way, he was just standing around because he couldn’t hold his man. He would battle for about 2-3 steps, then it’s like he would quit, maybe expecting the pass to be in the air by then, I dunno. But it was a glaring weakness on our O-line.
Behind the veil
Folks,
Don’t believe for a minute the coaching staff was happy with this game. They will praise in public and rip some folks in private. There were a few players the coaches will be happy with, but not with the team’s performance. It was not pretty and more inconsistent than any Tech team I remember in the past several years.
For those who say SMU is not a bad football team, think again. I saw a bad football team Sunday and a very mediocre team. Rice played a better game than SMU.
I’m sorry, but I saw very little leadership from the QB. I’m not sure any team will rally behind a passive leader. If the team we saw Sunday doesn’t improve substantially, we’ll be playing ECU in the Texas Bowl.
Sticks and Potts.
If the offensive line does not improve and improve very quickly all the Sticks backers will get to see him soon because Potts is going to get creamed. Then it will be Sticks turn to get smacked and we can argue about who his replacement should be. One Two Three throw it, or get sacked. Potts played fine. He is not a great QB, but he is good enough to win if he doesn’t get his ass knocked off every other play. Fortunately theres 10 other guys that should help him, line men that don’t block and receivers that don’t catch are going to make him look bad. There going to make Sticks look bad too. Sticks is a better runner so maybe that would help. We have a good O-line coach and hopefully he will make the right adjustments. Random thoughts, have a great week.
Potts needs to learn to move out of pocket
and do this consistently. The problem is after a couple of drives he just stalls and wants to stand where he receives the handoff and take an agonizingly long time to decide where he wants to throw the ball and then deliver from there. This is a recipe for disaster for any QB at any level, no matter how good the O-line is.

Win
That is what we all can be happy about, right? Tech is one and oh, just like all the other Big-12 teams, except for KU. UNM should be the one game Tech will score 50-70 points, so I doubt we will be able to assess much from that one. SMU, on the other hand, is coming off an a pretty good year that ended in a bowl win. They are expected to at least match that, maybe get another win or two extra. I was very happy to get out of this first game with a win, as is, I am sure, all of Techdom. I do think several players need to watch the video and see where they need to improve. And Tech will improve. With a big win next week, the team will be working hard to get the whole package on “O” and “D” installed and running smoothly. When UT comes to town, Tech MUST be ready, because UT will be ready, without a doubt.

Potts is more intimidating Qb
Is it just me or is Potts arm pretty scary (good scary)? Potts arm is waaay closer to elite than Sticks’ wheels, so there’s no question who to play. Seems like Potts not having to make reads helped his confidence slightly, lets hope this grows each week.. He’ll never be able to move around in the pocket, so I’m hoping the screen is the part of the offense we didnt showcase saturday….4thd downs, nuff said…
The D ends have to get off blocks better, LBs did their thing, but they need help.
The one-gap scheme is great, but noticed a few tentative tackles. Hopefully intensity will grow and we can get more big hits (intimidation is key). No huge mistakes in secondary, but I’d take a few in exchange for a couple more sacks…

Sticks vs Potts already?
Wow…I wasn’t expecting the Sticks vs Potts thing already. I’m on record as saying I don’t care who starts, so I don’t really fall on one side or the other. There are pros and cons to both. What I saw was an improved, not perfect, performance by Potts. They ran some very vanilla things. He moved in the pocket when necessary, but could still improve in this area. He put up points and converterd the turnovers we got from the defense. The running game sucked so he didn’t have any cover from that aspect of the game.
Plus, we have to remember the amount of pressure that is on this kid to perform…for the offense as a whole and for himself personally. I thought he handled that well and didn’t get ratteled when things didn’t go his way. I would like to see us score TDs on multiple possessions in a row as well, but that just isn’t going to happen every game…especially given the fact there is a new coaching staff and a new system.
We certainly should have put the ponies away when we had a chance. Not doing that was disappointing. This really seemed to be a team win with definite team miscues on all three sides that need to be cleaned up. I didn’t see anyone who really jumped out from an individual performance stand point…good or bad…with the exceptions of Leong, Davis, Olson, and FG kickers.
Potts will get his second start against a team we should beat and we will all look for improvement from week 1 to week 2.
Before you harp on Ford too much for the PI call...
I’m going to go ahead and say that PI was the right thing to do there. He got beat, and that pass would have been a TD had he not brought his man down. There’s sometimes when it’s okay to take a penalty, and that was one of them. While the PI might have extended that drive momentarily, lets not forget that that same drive also ended two plays later on a Tech pick.
