WHAT WE KNOW | I'm not really sure what to write or what to think here. Honestly, after New Mexico being embarrassed in Autzen, Oregon by the Oregon Ducks 72-0, I'm surprised that Mike Locksley still has a job. Take a look at the boxcore. That's failure on just about every level. And to clarify, the official NCAA stat website was acting a little funny so I had to improvise and use Yahoo! Sports stats for the stats on the right. Not all precincts had reported their stats (or something), but I can assure you that New Mexico's performance on Saturday helped rank them as one of the worst performers on Saturday, on both offense and defense. I'm going to run down the ineptitude, but let's start with the defense. The Lobos gave up 369 yards on 58 attempts for a 6.3 yard per attempt average. New Mexico then permitted the Ducks to complete 62% of their passes for 9.4 yards per attempt. To say that Oregon was incredibly efficient would be an understatement.

The New Mexico offense was equally bad. The Lobos had 25 rushing attempts for 52 yards. I don't think I need to do the math here, but that's about 2 yards a carry. The Lobo passing game managed only 82 yards for the game and for the game, the New Mexico quarterbacks completed only 44% of their passes.

An animated drive-chart, what we can expect and players I think you should watch, all after the jump.

Sometimes a drive-chart can explain a way some things, but an animated drive-chart makes this seem incomprehensible. Enjoy.

WHAT WE CAN EXPECT | New Mexico can't be that bad two weeks in a row, right? I'm willing to admit that these players have pride and no one, and I mean no one, wants to lose that bad. On Monday, head coach Mike Locksley said that it's unfair to judge the Lobos based on that one game:

"To those who want to judge us based on one week, I think is wrong," Locksley said Sunday. "It is a long season. There is a lot of football left to be played. To say can we get everything fixed in one week ... well, those type of questions will be answered to all those who have doubts."

Snip

"For me it's the worst I've ever been a part of," Locksley said. "I was more shocked than surprised. The last thing that comes to a team that's inexperienced is consistency. That's why I really believe that what you saw yesterday isn't indicative of the type of team we have."

Being at home, I think the Lobos will play better, and I'm already gearing up for the thought that Texas Tech doesn't beat New Mexico "bad enough".

PLAYERS I THINK YOU SHOULD WATCH | I'm not sure who to pick here. Because I've got nothing, I'll go with QB B.R. Holbrook, who should have a better game. I'm guessing that the coaching staff (and I think that Locksley is an offensive coordinator by trade) does everything humanly possible to keep things easy for Holbrook.

Not a lot of players stepped up their defensive game last week, so I'll just go with the guy that got the most tackles: DB A.J. Butler. Butler finished with 10 tackles and I'm sure that you expect a little bit better analysis, but I'm not real sure what to say. I will make one mention, which is that I think that DE Johnathan Rainey is the one that gave QB Taylor Potts his second concussion last year as Potts' head hit the turf after a Rainey sack. He was only a sophomore last year and he did register a sack last week against Oregon.

I think our boys remember what happened last season vs the Aggies….It wont happen again. Not to a Tubbs coached team!

Going to Albuquerque

Will visit the in-laws and attend the game with them and my wife’s roomie (and husband)from Tech. I hope the Tech fans show up in decent numbers. I expect NM to play like their hair is on fire. NM folks hate all things Texas.

TV coverage?

The website says The Mtn. will carry the game. What is that and how extensive is their reach?

At least it will be on film for replay on a more regional scale, I assume.

Do you have to subscribe?

or is this part of the basic sports package on DirectTV?

by 2001Raider on Sep 7, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

The college channels are all basic, or at least don't require the complete sports package

I upgraded to the complete sports package just before the season began but I had the Big 10, the Mountain West & CBS College Sports (essentially the SEC) channels before the upgrade.

Any idea if SuddenLink carries it?

I really hope I can watch. Otherwise, do you think it will be internet-cast anywhere?

Suddenlink San Angelo shows it at 10:30 FSSW.

I hate games like this. NM couldn’t look any worse off and anything but a complete carpet bombing of them will be viewed unacceptable. I expect Tech will win with ease but NM will play much better this week no matter how disfunctional the team may be. This would be good game to eastablish some kind of running game and work on stopping the run.

I agree with your expectations, but I have the opposite emotional reaction.

I’m loving it. If you are right, (we win, but not by a landslide) we will be blessed for the following reasons.
1. We have a short week to prepare. Better NM than a conference foe, true?
2. We will be spending the week making corrections, which means that NM will be another “1st game” for the corrections (both personnel and technique).
3. I was reading stuff on “Orangebloods” and was surprised to see that the Horns remain arrogant even in the face of their poor showing last Saturday. A moderate TTU win against NM will further inflate their cockiness and tempt them to come into Lubbock thinking that a win over the Red Raiders is garranteed. Delicious!
4. Its early in the season. In November, when the national rankings become relevant, few will remember the score of the TTU-NM game. It will only show up as a “W”.
5. I doubt that a non-landslide win will discourage our team. They seem united and committed. They know that they are in a learning mode. They will have no problems getting emotionally ready for the Horns.
Perhaps I am a Pollyanna, but I just can’t see a down side to this week’s game as long as we win.

I like the list

I think you are right on, Colonel. UNM will give it their best and we will win by a margin most think is not enough. I didn’t think about #3 above but I like it. Hopefully UT will pound the hell out of Wyoming and come to The Jones over inflated. I’m looking forward to that game…but one at a time for this team. Beat UNM first with a sound performance…

by Techsan71 on Sep 7, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

They had a ton of turnovers against Oregon. I bet Tech’s D gets a few off of them too.

by ST04 on Sep 7, 2010 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

All I know is...

UNM wants to beat TTech every time we play and to think that they won’t bring their best effrort in their home opener would be dangerous. This team did not pley Smew well enough to overlook anyone.

by Dub Parks 88 on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 PM CDT reply actions

All of the above

Tech will win, but not by 72 points. If they want to be champions of anything, it frst starts with UNM. After that, UT will definitely NOT be a win, if Tech does not show improvement in some areas. Cocky or not, UT also hates Tech, their un-rival. It Tech learned and corrected where they needed to, they will dominate UNM and win easily. If not, it could be an embarrasing day for the red and black, win or lose.

Those boxscore stats don't make sense

It says NM rushed 32 times for 25 yards. Then, in the individual stats, it totals 30 runs for 53 yards, with two mysterious, unidentified runs accounting for negative-28 yards.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

NCAA counts sacks against rushing yardage

not passing yardage like the NFL; that may explain the discrepancy, but maybe not

by Dub Parks 88 on Sep 7, 2010 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

It counts against run stats in the NFL, as well.

by Tech92 on Sep 7, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope

In the NFL, sacks count against the team’s passing yards.

I think they’ll circle the wagons and play as hard as they ever have after that loss to Oregon. I’ll be happy if we win by 14+ points and Potts doesn’t have a replay of last year. I hope its a rout so that Sticks can get a little time late in the game.

and we win next week. just that.

10 things the Raiders need to improve on against New Mexico

1. Wrap up the QB when you lay hands on him. I am pretty sure this is the biggest QB except L. Jones(OU) they will face all season.. the SMU QB K.Padon is a big boy but the Tech defenders must have touched him violently 8 – 9 times without bringing him down. And keep intercepting throws that was first rate,..

2. Defensive Down linemen – Stay at home on 3rd and short the draw play is wounding us.. so far..

3. Wide receivers need to catch like they have been coached to do

4. Tackle in space on kick coverage

5. Not willing to concede the line of scrimmage. O line could and should be able to inflict a least 10 pancake blocks. Stoning the Lobos D line would go long way towards throwing W. Muschamp off kilter.

6. Though Taylor Potts completed 30 plus of 53 passes I ‘ like to see a 70% plus catch rate inflicted upon the current opponent

7. A large part of letting the Ponies stay in the game was missing Field Goals which were kicked low. Just get under it and lift the ball. I don’t think either Williams or Carona hit the ball correctly.

8. While kick returns were very impressive- keep this up.. the kick coverage was steadily being eroded. All game long. Tubs needs to find the fiercest down the throat, down field wild man and stoke his inner berserker. At least on the long return the 2 or three middle coverage guys and the gunner on the outside got chipped. The berserker needs to lay out guys on contact to allow someone a shot at the returners’ legs.

9. Run blocking on obvious running downs with 2 x backs in the back field – look its either do it or do not do it. I don’t think I am the only observer who thinks that this formation is telegraphing the play. There has to be an upside..Okay it was vanilla because Texas is coming to town. Block somebody folks.

10. Side line enthusiasm was bit of a low ember. I would like to see someone like Trent Nickerson waving a towel. Needs to be stepped up a bit . Right it was hot, just find the spark guy and stoke that guy with caffeine drinks. Please.

UNM Slaughter of the Lambs

From what I can tell every starter on the UNM football team left the field at one time or another covered in blood. UNM will come out more aggressive against TECH because first they really want to beat us, and second the Captain reminded us how teams imporove the most from week one to week two. Red Raiders will win in the third and fourth quarter, and come home healthy and in one piece for the Whorns in Your Looking Live from Lubbock Texas. What I really want to see in Game 2 is:

1. Special Teams were a disaster. I thought Special Teams was a TT trademark. I hope that we can turn this arouind right away. This kind of effort in the Big 12 will get us 0 wins. That was awful.

2. The receiving corps was on vacation. We need YAC (Yards after catch). I can’t remember the last time I saw that many dropped balls in a Tech Game. I know it is only week one, but TT was way too easy on the team. I am used to The Pirate telling it like it is.

3. Offensive line play was way below average. This has to get fixed in week 2 or six wins is going to be very difficult.

4. I did not think the D Line play was as good as I have read in many blogs. I did not think we got a good enough push from our defensive tackles and that really concerns me. But, most importantly, QB’s in the Big 12 are going to run wild up the middle and scrambel for first downs if we cannot find someone who can run in the middle of the defense.

Overall, I think team scoread a modest C+. On the bright side, we get to imporove in Week 2 too. Go Red Raiders.
