Keys to the Game | Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. New Mexico Lobos

KEY 1: RUN OVER SOME FOLKS
Nothing would please me more than to see a dominating run effort. I think these guys could use a little bit of pick-me-up after not being terribly effective against SMU. According to this week's two-deep, nothing has changed, which means that Chris Olson is going to continue to stay at right tackle, at least for now. But more than anything, I hope that OL coach Moore shows the linemen a tape of what Oregon was able to do to New Mexico and then just walk away as they watch the tape. There's no reason why these guys can't dominate the Lobos, but Moore isn't going to sit back and just hope that things happen. We've talked quite a bit about how Chris Olson struggled on Sunday and he needs to get it together relatively quickly. For whatever reason, OC Brown and OL coach Moore have been hesitant to talk about putting in Terry McDaniel. I'm not sure what he's done, if he's done anything, but if he can play left tackle as a redshirt freshman, then I think he can be an earth mover at the right tackle spot. Maybe they just want McDaniel to earn it. Rather than just middling around the line of scrimmage and just moving their bodies, the entire group needs to get off the line of scrimmage and move some defenders. It can happen. It's just being better than the man in front of you.
KEY 2: LETTING THE GAME COME TO YOU
| MONDAY | SMU Post Game Thoughts |
| TUESDAY | What We Think We Know |
| WEDNESDAY | Keys to the Game |
| THURSDAY | Reasons for Concern and Optimism |
| FRIDAY | Prediction Time |
Looking at yesterday's statistics from the New Mexico vs. Oregon tilt, it seemed evident that New Mexico was simply incapable of moving the ball down the field. In my quick glance of the play-by-play for New Mexico the longest play of the day for the Lobos was 12 yards, which happened twice. Consider that for a second. And just from reading the play-by-play, it seemed as if head coach Mike Locksley had given up on his quarterback, B.R. Holbrook, with his play-calling, or perhaps he just didn't trust him any longer in the game. The problem is that Demond Dennis put the ball on the turf for Oregon to recover on three different occasions, so in all actuality, he wasn't much better in terms of ball security. I'm almost surprised by writing this, but it's almost as if at some point, Oregon was just waiting for New Mexico to make a mistake because they thought it was inevitable.
This isn't to say that Oregon didn't force the issue with New Mexico, but the one thing that we saw this week with the new Texas Tech defense was that maybe they're trying to be a bit more optimistic with turnovers. Four turnovers in the game is what a team strives for. With New Mexico's propensity to be turnover prone (the Lobos were 97th in the country in turnover margin last year as well) then I like the idea of forcing the action defensively.
One more after the jump.
KEY 3: STOP THE RUN
The most disappointing aspect of the SMU game was the fact that Texas Tech gave up so many yards against the run against the Ponies. Overall, I thought the pass defense played well, but I didn't like all of the positive yards that SMU was able to gain, which most seemed to be delayed handoffs out of the shotgun. If I had to guess, I'm betting that Locksley saw the same thing and I'd also bet that Locklsey will want to eat up some clock and try to establish some sort of rhythm in getting their running game going. I don't think that Holbrook, or the backup quarterback, Tarean Austin, are statues and would expect that Locksley has told both of them that if the opportunity is there, to take off and run the ball, especially if there's no containment. The defensive line was pretty darned good at getting to Padron last week, but in terms of getting into gaps, I thought that there was some work that needed to be done. Yesterday, ILB Bront Bird talked about how the defense needs to play their gaps better and not do too much. I would agree. The one-gap defense is predicated on each defender taking one gap. I don't know if it was the game plan for SMU, but simply rushing up the field, all the while any semblance of being responsible for those gaps to stop the run will create issues for the secondary, which is why S Cody Davis was making so many plays. The defensive line must keep the New Mexico offensive line in front of them. The early results seem to indicate that the secondary should be fine. They may get beat deep, but I don't think that New Mexico is truly capable of opening things up offensively.

Riots in Albuquerque
The most important thing is the strong rivalary they have for US. Im sure going from NM to Oregon was enough to wear out these kids that havent smelled an ounce of humidity in months, at home playing us they will not be the same team. Hopefully our players dont make the same correlations they did last year when playing the recently stomped aggies
I think this needs to be a statement game by the O and D lines. The Oline needs to give Potts a steady pocket and open some running lanes. Consistently. I don’t expect every run to go for 20, but I do think somewhere near 5 yds a pop against this UNM team should be the norm.
On defense, we need to consistently harass the QB and have some solid gap containment. Our LBs, specifically Bird, need to be much more active. Stuffing the run has to be a key area of improvement.
If we can’t do those things against UNM, I don’t see how we could expect much better once conference play starts in two weeks.
Excellent point.....
and behalf of the young bull (KWash) and the old bull (me) Iofficially delcare this the Statement game for Lineplay. Strap ’em on tight and wear your cup.

Tuberville Culture
This game will tell me a lot about the personality of the team and if Tuberville has truly changed the Tech locker room. This is a game that I would see the Red Raiders possibly losing in the past (see road trip to winless Colorado and numerous trips to Denton vs. UNT). The Lobos want to beat Tech, BAD! IF the team isnt focused this could be a long evening and kill any momentum going into the UT game. I have faith in Tubs but the past track record of going on the road ag makes me nervous.
"Well I’m glad you picked us last, we put that on the bulletin board and maybe we can circle around that" - Neal Brown, Offensive Coordinator
I agree
Completely.
I wrote about this last January after Tubbs was hired (The Pirate Captain, The Riverboat Gambler, and the Correctable Loss)….the fabric of this team will show itself and we’ll see exactly what mark The RiverBoat Gambler has made on this team.
Certainly we had a letdown in a win last year over these Lobos. I EXPECT a solid and improved outting from this team.

Giving credit where credit is due
Good call back in January.
"Well I’m glad you picked us last, we put that on the bulletin board and maybe we can circle around that" - Neal Brown, Offensive Coordinator
Agree
I agree on all three points. Especially #1. After watching the SMU game, my biggest concern with this team right now is the OL. I’d love to see us rush for 200 yards this game along with 50 pass attempts. I think its possible.
Stopping the Run
This is an area that we had better show improvement. Teams such as A&M and OSU to mention a few are going to being running the ball all day long this season. We need stellar performances from the middle LBs. NM won’t be a blow out but I think Tech wins and builds on it’s weaknesses. Lastly, lets not for get about our special teams play. I’m not sure what happened this past weekend but it looked like a mismanaged side of the ball. Lots to improve upon and time short before UT comes to town.

"The defensive line must keep the New Mexico offensive line in front of them."
I don’t know about you Seth, but I would very much prefer to see the New Mexico offensive line either on the ground or chasing our d-line behind the line of scrimmage on a pretty regular basis :)
OL = worrrisome / scary
that is about all I know. They need to make improvment and probably will. Whatever they do, for this game, they are good enough to win…the improvment is needed for the following game.
The defense OL has a lot more opportunity to make progress, they did not get beat physically but made mental mistakes that hurt….that is easier to remedy..learn where to stand before the hike.
NMex also has game film for which our staff can make plans…I expect more effective attack on D, and perhaps on O as well…I also expect much better coverage on our kicks and punts and no field goals beyond Matt William’s range…and no qb sneaks.
And probably plenty of water for all the fans.

Last week
I was gonna predict Lyle Leong the MVP and didnt….my mistake
then I was gonna predict Potts because I am a Stache supporter and backed off…I could have made an argument I was right. Raider92 had the guts to do it!!!
THEN, I nominated the O-Line….I couldnt have been more wrong
I may still nominate the OLine for MVPs this week when the time comes. Right now…they need to get they $h¡t together

He/she did play though
but only threw a few blocks. I actually think he was in there on Batch’s longest run of the day, and threw the block that helped spring the play. I was mildly impressed……

I was nervous last week...much more than most here
I am not at all for UNM. This shouldn’t be a contest from a talent level. I just have expectations of looking good in all facets of the game….there is no reason otherwise.

I have a feeling the coordinators for all three sides of the ball will have Tech where they need to be this week. Week 1 is always a crap shoot with adjustments always needing to be made afterward. UNM needs ten times as much to address than Tech. With a short week, I like Tech’s chances of dominating the Lobos like they should. By getting back into their game-time rhythm after such a so-so beginning, this team will be very effective.

the optimistic TTpilk65 back, your mood had been a little dark since Sunday.
