Red Raider Gridiron | Okafor and Zouzalik Return to Practice; RaiderDoc Tailgate Photos
New Mexico Game Watching: The LAJ has information on where you can watch the game this Saturday night. For those of us who are out of town, the Alumni Association has a list of places where you can watch the game, from Austin, to Dallas, to Denver (hat-tip to djollie for finding the link). I intend on watching the game somewhere and could easily be talked into driving up to Collin County if you guys and gals are getting together again.
Press Conference: It was just head coach Tommy Tuberville yesterday and no players. Here's the non-transcript:
Tommy Tuberville: OT Mickey Okafor and IR Austin Zouzalik are back. WR Alexander Torres will travel with the team and he may not get better through the season, so he might play. Punt returner will be between IR Detron Lewis or Zouzalik. Not worried about Okafor other than endurance. He knows what to do, but technique is rusty. A rested offensive Okafor is better than an offensive lineman that has gone through 60 plays. Tuberville likes for the offense to throw to the color of the jersey that they will be in that week. Howard Schnellenberger did this. Every road game is on grass. Like to get everyone used to the grass. Focused on the run game and it's not going to happen overnight. It's not about effort. If one guy messes up, then it messes up everything. It's about finesse and he thinks the team will get better.
I don't know if the non-transcript explained it, but the offense was in white jerseys (I think) and Tuberville said that he likes for the offense to get used to throwing to that jersey, which means that you can expect Texas Tech to wear white on Saturday. I also like the reference to Schnellenberger.
A few other things, Tuberville sounded excited about Okafor and Zouzalik getting back. He also said that Torres' back wasn't going to get any better, so he might as well play. I could see Torres sitting out one more game, maybe breaking the glass on in case of emergency.
Notes, Notes and More Notes: LAJ's Don Williams writes that Tuberville is still considering if he wants to remove the redshirt from CB Urell Johnson and OLB Tahrick Peak. On Saturday RB Ben McRoy, CB Tre' Porter, LB Cqulin Hubert and LB Zach Winbush all played on Saturday. Here's Tuberville on Johnson:
"If we can make it a few more games with these two corners (starters D.J. Johnson and Ford) and maybe one guy alternating, then Urell probably … he needs to redshirt," Tuberville said. "All freshmen really need to redshirt, but unfortunately we weren’t able to do it with everybody."
Spotted Photo Gallery: In other news, the sky is blue and Texas Tech has a ton of cute girls. Check out the Spotted photo gallery from Sunday.
OC Brown Tweet Update:
Guys are excited about 1st road game. Played well in the 2nd and 3rd Qtr on Sunday. Definitely need to start and finish better.
Recruiting Stuff: Rivals.com's Mike Farrell has Rivals.com prep school preseason top 50 players, which includes Texas Tech commit OLB Terrell Hartsfield, who checks in at #12:
At No. 12 is the prospect that makes the biggest leap of anyone by far. Former Wake Forest (N.C.) Rolesville standout Terrell Hartsfield was on the radar early heading into his senior season averaging 12 tackles per game and earning an early offer from NC State and interest from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Clemson and others, but fell off due to academic concerns. Hartsfield, a 6-foot-4, 215-pounder, already received an offer from Texas Tech and has committed and is the talk of Hargrave already.
I also found the Rivals.com top 50 junior college players and making the list is little known DB Justin Rogers who checks in at #24 in the country. I'll change the stars and grades later this week.
So much more after the jump, including a funny video/animation about why you hate the Longhorns, Lobo links, Big 12 links and a couple of RaiderDoc tailgate photos.
NSFW, But Funny: I was forwarded this by email and it's making the internets rounds, but this is one of the reasons why you hate the Longhorns. If you're at work, put on your headphones.
New Mexico Lobo Links: ABQjournal's Greg Archuleta writes that Texas Tech now pays attention to detail and ILB Bront Bird has some good things to say about Tuberville:
"To me, it's just a blessing the he's been able to come here," Bird says. "How he handles himself, conducts, himself, controls the team -- you couldn't ask for a better coach."
And I'll go ahead and say it here. Players are entitled to opinions, just as much as you or me. If they like one coach over another, that's their opinion and I'm okay with that. Not every player is going to like a coach. It happens. This doesn't mean that they didn't appreciate playing for that coach, or appreciate what that coach did, but it does mean that they may like the alternative better and because a player may think that doesn't make them wrong, it just makes their opinion different than yours . . . DT's Mike Graham writes that Texas Tech is not taking the Lobos for granted. Tuberville and RB Baron Batch talk about improving this week in the running game:
"Our offensive line didn’t grade out that well," Tuberville said during Monday’s media conference. "We gave up two sacks and seven hits on our quarterback and then when you don’t rush the ball for barely 100 yards against a team that we should have been able to run the ball a little bit better on — we didn’t play that well on offensive line."
But Batch expects the team to develop a rhythm as the season continues forward.
"I didn’t play my best," Batch said. "A lot of the times we were one block away. I think once we get on the same page it’s going to be fine. It’s kind of the same way we started off last year. We started off slow and we had some young guys playing, and once they got into the flow of things and got comfortable with what they were doing we took off."
Big 12 and National Links: The BlogPoll has been released and this is a fun read, as always . . . SB Nation's Holly Anderson with her Heisman Watch List . . . the Big 12's Wendell Barnhouse has some notebooky Big 12 things . . . ESPN's David Ubben has those players that are rising and falling this week, and rising is QB Taylor Potts . . . AOL Fanhouse's Brett McMurphy grades all of the new head coaches initial performances, including a "B" for Tuberville and an "A" for East Carolina's Ruffin McNeill (I still love this guy) . . . ESPN's Jeff Caplan wonders if IR Cornelius Douglas could be the next Wes Welker . . .
RaiderDoc Tailgate Photos: I got a handful of photos from DTN's Tech-ex: JB and I took some of my own during RaiderDoc's tailgate. Again, it's good to put faces with DTN user names and thanks a ton for RaiderDoc for hosting.
This is the dirt road myself and friends stopped at on the way to Lubbock to have a beer (or two):
This is the flag that RaiderDoc had us all sign to send with USAFRaider where he promised it would see a ton of miles in the air:
This is the tailgate in general:
This is me and RaiderDoc (he's on the left, I'm on the right):
Here's the entire crew with USAFRaider's flag:
I'm going to have to do a better job of organizing this the next time I'm in town so even more folks can attend, but this was a ton of fun for me to visit with everyone. Thanks again to everyone and I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your passion for all things Texas Tech.

Really?
Tuberville has acknowledged a ton that the team needs to get better and he’s said it since Sunday except for one tweet.

You know
I have a friend living far away and his following ctt on twitter is a huge piece of how he connects. You can imagine his reaction when he heard ‘great win’.
I have acknowledged ad nauseum that he was critical at his press conference….for some, twitter is stand alone communication. It’s not earth shattering, I just appreciated browns tweet.

Twitter is probably not a logical choice for a sole source of info from a very, very busy 60 yr old coach. I’d be shocked if he’s the one sending those updates. Probably just spouting something tame to an aide he passes between meetings.

Tubs is the only person who tweets on his “official” Twitter account. He doesn’t need anyone to do it for him.

COLLIN COUNTY DTNers
I called Two Bros. and they have the game, in fact they are on the alum. accoc. official list. I even asked them if they carry the Mtn. Network, the dude said yes.
Seth we’d love to have you up here, and all of the Dallas people. I guess I’ll do another rool call and get a feel for who’ll be there.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Welp.
Looks like we’ll never get that exclusive interview with Katfish since Seth didn’t wear his red on Sunday.

Schnellenberger reference
Tubβs is a bit of a name dropper! Loved that the reporter called him out on this reference. Schnellenberger was not at Miami when Tubs arrived so he actually stole it from whom ever the OC for Miami was at the time.

So what's all the animosity towards t-shirt fans?
So should we insist that every person that wears a Texas Tech t-shirt be an alumni or enrolled in the university? I don’t get it. Quite frankly, the animosity towards t-shirt fans smacks of the same arrogance of which we accuse UT.
I’m pleased to see Texas Tech represented in dress anytime, anywhere, and when I do see someone sporting the red and black, I make sure to offer compliment. I could give a damn where or if they went to college, or if they’ve ever stepped-foot in Lubbock.
I don’t know, but I didn’t find that clip particularly funny. Seemed more like pathological jealousy made manifest through crude attack. I mean, if UT is the true rival, and they are, why launch a denigrating broadside into the flank of a person completely unassociated with the university? As a Texan, I can’t blame others for wearing the colors of one the state’s flagship universities. I suspect in many cases the individual is announcing loyalty to the state of Texas itself rather than the university. Good for them.
Folks, it’s all about branding. UT has the edge, they’ve always had the edge. I don’t know, but it seems to me a more effective approach might include singing the praises of Texas Tech, rather than insulting the entire family, including the children, of some poor guy enrolled in community college.
Yeah, sorry, hate to be a downer, but I wish the person that created that clip had not made mention of Texas Tech.
As for me, I have a long line of UT alumni friends and relatives to torment, and don’t see the upside of belittling an unaffiliated t-shirt wearer. Instead, I’m hoping to convince them to change shirts.
Here's the deal.....
Feel free to cheer for whomever…but you look stupid getting up in someones grill being arrogant and obnoxious and you couldn’t pick out the ut campus in a lineup.

I get that...
but you also risk appearing stupid when you launch and equally arrogant and wholly crass diatribe and posting it onto a format with world-wide access.
Just sayin’.
It's definitely not taking the high road
But the last 10 years have been about swagger and doing more with less. I thikg the tshirt fan is also part of us versus the world mentality that is now truly tech.
I can somewhat buy in on the philosophy of not blasting tshirt fans too bad because we hope to have them ourself….but I know too many wal Mart ut fans that make mr think otherwise.

by oldschoolraider on Sep 9, 2010 7:22 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I agree with you. People can wear whatever they want and root for whomever they want. That’s great and I wish Tech had more fans that don’t have any true affiliation to the school. But it’s those t-shirt fans (usually UT ones) that come up and start talking trash…“WE’re gonna beat ya’ll this weekend” or “That was awesome when WE knocked out Potts”…that really bug me.
I got to spend two weeks at Yale for a seminar and I got a t-shirt, but I don’t go up to Harvard people and start talking trash like I actually went there. It’s all about the attitude, I guess.
Yeah...arrogant assholes are universal...
and I suppose that’s what disturbs me the most about the clip. When you follow the dialogue it’s true that the t-shirt fan talks smack, but instead of replying in kind, the Tech fan unleashes a hostile fusillade of personal insults.
Just who is the biggest ass?
I don't mind t-shirt
fans either, as Texas Tech has theirs as well. I thought it was funny as all of my friends, all of them attended North Texas, cheer for UT and it’s funny to see them defend the Longhorns. Again, it made me chuckle, that’s all.
Go Raiders . . .

If you don't understand where the video is coming from...
then you must not know many UT fans.
To add to it, it’s not just the t-shirt variety fans that are bad. I know many UT grads and current UT students that know jack shit about football, but still believe UT is going to win the NC every year. What’s even more funny is that most of them go through depression every year when they drop their first game. ’08 was a great year for me around these people after all the trash they talked then Tech went out and destroyed them for 3 quarters.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Sep 10, 2010 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions
I read that...
but I don’t see there being anything wrong with trashing t-shirt fans too. My point was that both t-shirt and real fans of UT are in the same boat for me.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Sep 10, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, perhaps I wasn't clear....
I have no problem with sports oriented “smack”. By all means, if confronted, feel free to reply in kind.
However, that’s not what the clip portrays. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think “You’re school sucks!” is equivalent to “…Orange wearing dumbf***….you’re an idiot….your illegitimate inbred children….. they are lucky to remember to breathe…will be strippers by 17…..and the only balls they will be playing with….etc.”
Again, maybe it’s just me, but the Tech fan’s use of personal invective (not employed by the t-shirt wearer) changes the dynamic from “sports smack”, to full-out hostile affront.
Once again, I don’t take issue with “sports smack”, I just don’t see how escalating the dynamic by delivering crude insults makes the Tech fan less confrontational….or arrogant.
That’s all.
To that I say...
have you ever had anyone talk down to you and act as if you’re a lesser being due to going to Tech and not UT or A&M? I have…by family…
It’s one of those things where you just get tired of hearing the constant bullshit, and you feel like you need to let it out. That’s what I see this video as.

NSFW...and more
I checked this out and then read some of the remarks. I still can’t understand how UT fans can really hate Texas Tech so much if, according to them, Tech isn’t even on their radar. Mind boggling, I know.
Love the red-faced painted gals. Keep ’em coming.
It would be nice if all freshmen could be redshirted, although I am not so sure it is a terrible necessity. If a player is farther developed than some of his classmates, up to a par (or better) with some upperclassmen (Crabtree?), I figure they deserve a chance to show their talents on the field and add to the talent level immediately. If there is a better chance for a player to improve by being redshirted, then that should be what is done. Sometimes the transition from college can be very overwhelming, even without being involved with football. Whatever can be done to make a player’s college experience one he will always cherish, then try to get it done. When a player is on the team, playing every game, he should be totally involved, giving no quarter. I think Tech has an outstanding group of coaches and they are trying to improve upon what has been accomplished by the previous crew. Whatever issues still seem to need resolution, this team and coaching crew have my full backing. I am proud to say “I am a Texas Tech Red Raider.”
DTN is growing every day. Seth has done a tremendous job of maintaining a quality place for us fans to go to and catch up on and discuss (and cuss) all issues, and he generally provides a great outlet for all of us during the football season to cheer, vent or just to follow all things Texas Tech. Thanks to Seth for a job?!!?? well done. And thanks to all of those who are a part of this great Double T Nation blog.

Great Video
I thought it was fairly indicative of the typical U.T. fan here in Amarillo. As far as being arrogant or crass towards them, ggggrrreeaaatt. My kids attend a private school here and we have to deal with the daddy’s money crowd of U.T. grads. We are very familiar with arrogant orange clad a-holes. I would like to see a video where the U.T. fan was a Wet Back (thats illegal immigrant for the Austinites) .The burnt orange caps and shirts help them blend in. GoTECH.
I would prefer that you not use the
term “wet back”. I try to ask users not to use language that could be deemed racially insensitive, homophobic, etc. on DTN.

Proved Point ?
I certainly appreciate your taking the high road with regard to the U.T. fan video. I was sincere in apologizing for a insensitive remark. So when confronted by the gas station attendant with her burnt orange t-shirt, telling me and my 8 year old son how " U.T gonna beat Tech Bad" .( Yes he the audacity to wear a Fear the Raider shirt). Why an adult would confront an year old is beyond me. But that is the typical U.T. fan and it does not mater if the insult is in broken english or from a more educated tongue I don’t want the stupid chicken—it pricks wearing red and black. Anything that hurts their school or fan base is fine by me. I have a deep seated hate for those pricks sorry if that bothers you.
