Post Game Thoughts | Texas Longhorns 83, Texas Tech Red Raiders 52
Box Score | Post Game Quotes
THE RESULT | EMBARRASSING | I had an incredibly long day yesterday and I had set the DVR for the game during my lunch hour and was thinking that maybe, just maybe, this team will show a little pride and make this game close. When I finally arrived home, and started the game, the first five minutes or so seemed like my wish had come true, but at some point after that I became embarrassed, in my own home, as to what was happening on television. No lie, I'm pretty sure that I actually put my head in my hands 3 or 4 different times.
If the writing wasn't on the wall after the Baylor game, where the team actually competed, it should be on the wall as of the end of the game last night and perhaps, thankfully, everyone saw what happened. Everyone saw that embarrassing effort.
Everyone.
And at this point, there's really no denying what has to happen and I think this truly puts a kink in the way things were supposed to go, which is that the men's basketball team would have a good to decent season, AD Gerald Myers could extend Pat Knight after he takes his team to the NCAA Tournament, and Myers could ride off into the sunset. That ain't happening and as Ryan Hyatt had alluded to earlier this month, there's a strong possibility that the search for the next athletic director has been put on hyper-speed. I wouldn't put it past anyone right now, but there seems like there's little chance that Myers would hire a new basketball coach before leaving, which would put the new athletic director in a bit of a bind and would be obligated to honor that contract. What looked like a May retirement may end up being a March retirement for Myers. Most, if not all, of the decent coaching hires occur in March, right after the season is complete.
The smart thing would be to speed up the process of finding a new athletic director, have him or her take the position in February, and then put them to work in finding a new basketball coach. I'm sure that a new athletic director would probably like to ease into a situation, but considering that men's basketball is supposed to be one of the programs that actually makes money for the university, it's an incredibly important hire.
Right now, the situation regarding the men's basketball program, is hopefully forcing the folks in charge to take an incredibly critical look at what's happening overall at Texas Tech. And although I'm sure that there are former coaches and employees that may deserve to be the next athletic director, I want nothing to do with any former coach trying to run a multi-million dollar business. Perhaps 10 or 20 years ago, this is the way athletic departments were run, but I would love nothing more than to see someone that can look at the current state of athletics and start holding some toes to the fire. And I should also clarify that I'm not a guy that demands results after one year. Personally, I like to give people a chance which is why I've been so lenient with Tuberville his first year. I think it's incredibly tough to judge whether or not a coach is going to be successful after one year and I think after the second year I think a fan can make an informed educated guess as to whether or not that coach will be successful or not. I'm probably in the minority here on the length of time to give a coach to figure things out, but that's what makes things interesting.
And despite my feelings about the basketball program, this doesn't at all mean that I think less of Pat Knight. I do think that PK is a good person, and I do think he runs the cleanest program in college basketball. I would expect that if PK ever gets the chance to be a head coach again, he'll never have a spot on his record as far as NCAA violations are concerned. And when UT's Rick Barnes speaks glowingly about PK, I think he means it. I do think PK works hard and I think he's been incredibly honest about what he needs to do at Texas Tech. Those are all things that I appreciate, but it's not enough.
I don't know if there's really any reason to break down the game. In a nutshell it's the same thing that's happened the entire year: Texas Tech was out-rebounded by 19; UT's 6'1" point guard Dogus Balbay had 4 offensive rebounds while the entire team had 7 offensive rebounds; Texas Tech shot 39% from the floor making zero 3-point shots; PG John Roberson, SF Mike Singletary, SG David Tairu and SF Brad Reese the 4 seniors that PK put his faith in by starting last night were 8 of 33 from the floor last night; and Texas Tech had 2 assists. That's right 2 assists for the night.

We're Done
Seth don’t waste your time breaking this game down. It was pathetic and that’s pretty much all we need to know. I feel the same about PK. I like the guy personally and think he’s probably a great role model for kids and Tech but he’s just not head coaching material. It’s too bad he didn’t transition into a great coach. The nepotism thing probably hurt his chances for success. We need a great recruiter and coach combined in order to right the ship. Hopefully a solid AD will identify our weaknesses and and make a good hire. The sooner the better because this season is already over.

After last nights performance.
It may be a good idea to replace PK now. There are mental games going on between PK and his players. I believe we have the Wade Philips syndrome happening with this team. Even though the results might not be any better, Bubba could finish this year up and Tech make a good hire at end of the season. If PK finishes this year, this is going to be a painful for Tech fans to watch. I’m like you Seth I like PK , but this season is going from bad to worse. A head coach should never attack his players verbally in the press!

What happened to all that money we made in 2008 and 2009 from football operations;
The administration and our AD need to be put into the equipment shed, and please lock the door and turn out the lights.

How do you like your toast?
Wow, we are toast. I couldn’t believe the lack of effort and fundamentals that Tech put on display last night. Sure, Texas is a good team, but we did not compete. That is inexcuseable. This is a team just going through the motions. When you expected to see a play executed off of a time-out, instead you got 5 guys just winging it, hoping that someone might get open. It rarely happened. X’s and O’s aside, basketball is ultimately about getting the ball through the hoop. We sucked at that. That was some of the poorest shooting I have ever witnessed in a Division I game. I hope I’m wrong, but we may not win a conference game this year.

Definitely agree on the criteria for the new AD

Just an observation...
But I think Tech needs a trauma surgeon rather than an AD at this point. This is getting f’n ridiculous!!!

Nice brightside
You mean we get two months less of Gerald a d all we have to do is lift our skirt and show our ass on national tv? I jump in it. Surely, this doesn’t look good for the tubs for ad campaign either.
Crockett is a throwback to the athleticism of the dickey teams, and this year is a waste with him. Singletary’s effort against Unt should have caused more grief than pk gave….he’s all bark and no bite.
Our deal with the devil was not a good long term deal for our program. I can’t believe we have been saddled with Gerald for all these years…when my interaction with him 25 years ago in Lubbock made me think he would end up in a padded room. Not a good guy then, and still not….there’s your tribute.

Remember when
We made playboys bottom 10 football teams back in the early 80s and were one of the laughing stocks of college football? I feel like that is where our BB program is now. I agree Gerald is a piece of work, his exit cannot be to soon.

A new AD can turn all this around. Gerald is the worst AD ever! He got lucky on one coach (leach) and other than that he has been terrible.
I won't go quite that far...
I firmly believe that GM really does want what’s best for Tech. The problem is his vision of “what’s best”. And he does let cronyism get involved entirely too much.
Still, he does love Tech, and wants what is best for the school. Bockrath just wanted to do whatever was necessary to land him the next gig. I place a LOT of the issues we had in the 90’s right at BB’s feet. Think of it this way: He was so crooked, Alabama finally fired him because he was causing too many problems.

What is the AD Search Status?
Does anybody know if they have actually started looking?
This is a critical decision for TTU, but one subject we never hear anything about. I would love to know what the thought process is. Since it involes the Bell Tower boys, however, we’d all probably be amazed and ashamed at the lack of any coherent ideas being floated or worked on.

PK Has Lost The Team
It is clear to me that the players do not repsond to PK. Whatever connection there was at the beginning of the season (and I don’t think there was much of one as I think the players quit last year too), it’s no longer there.
Last night, in many key situations, Tech was simply “out-hearted”, that is, not necessarily out-played, but rather Tech had no heart in the game.
Regardless of what we think of PK, he’s not the right coach for this team or school, and we should put everyone out of their misery and fire him now, name an on-staff interim let the kids play, and find a new AD NOW!
Seth is right-on regarding the qualifications for a new AD. We need a young businessman that is in a current assistant AD position at a powerhouse school and give him/her the opportunity to run this program.
We need it now!
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
PK is the symptom...not the problem
King Gerald is the problem. And now the “King” has emeritus status. He will have control over who replaces him and ultimately over all decisions and hirings in the future. It is an awful situation. In my opinion we are headed for much more of the same. Mens BB will struggle. Krista Gerlich will never be hired and all sports will remain as he has proclaimed…mediocre. Bah!

Hope you're wrong, but...
Hance needs to overrule Gerald on this mess. I hope Hyatt’s feeling that the AD search is being sped up is true—cause if PK’s not gone by year’s end, the BB program is in the toilet for years to come. I agree that PK really ought to go NOW, and just let Bubba be the interim coach. At least that’ll send a message to the team (hopefully). Otherwise, there is NO hope for the rest of the year.
I like PK as a person (unlike his grouchy, unstable dad), but he’s not getting the job done and needs to go. Any fool could see last night that the team JUST DOESN’T CARE!!! That’s embarrassing, and means the players don’t respect the coach—and means, like in the case of Wade Phillips with the Cowboys, that the HC has to go NOW. Sorry to see the PK era end this way, though.
Wow, if we're pinning our hopes on Kent Hance to do the right thing
it just shows how far we’ve sunk.
That is countrier than a biscuit. - Garth Brooks
Pat Knight sucks, our basketball team sucks, and oh yeah... Tuck Fexas.
I was in attendance, for the entirety (even after they killed the lights on the second level). I don’t feel bad at all for saying that the team sucks, they put forth literally no effort. No one on that court wearing red and black seemed to care, including PK. I mean hell, the first time we pressed was after we were down by 30. Can someone please explain to me how that’s a coaching decision worth the big bucks? PK needs to go, immediately. Big Lew needs someone to explain to him that 6 points and 0 fouls in the first half isn’t good for a starting post, it shows that you aren’t playing hard. And our Athletics department is stupid for selling all tickets to the game at $30 a pop. Do they not realize that we suck and you can watch high school teams play better ball for much much cheaper?
The part that chaps my ass the most is the fact that after the game I was at IHOP when several players came in to eat. They were joking and happy, you would have never guessed that they just got killed by an in state rival. I don’t know about you guys, but if I get my ass handed to me I’ve got a chip on my shoulder for a while. It’s time to start canceling scholarships for players that don’t seem to care about playing. F ’em.
