A Tech Oasis on the rolling plains of forgotten Texas
The Rock Inn in Seymour has been slinging hash since 1932. Seymour is where SH114 from DFW, US 82 / 277 from Wichita Falls merge to head west to Lubbock. Long before I-20, this was the preferred rout to Lubbock from the DFW area. The owner is a Tech grad from sometime in the middle of the last century so the decor is all red and black. If you want to know what a roadside dinner was like when the Joads were fleeing the dust bowl, this is the place. This is a must stop for any Tech fan.
The sign to look for.
The first hint your in the right place
Yep, you are home.
Note the red and black, also random old people.
A proper ashtray
Bevo on a bun
Decor
Alas it's time to bit farewell to the Rock Inn.

Remember it well!
I’ve stopped there a few times over the years. Have sampled their burgers, chicken fried steak, and eggs, pancakes and bacon—mmm, mmm, good eatin’ and friendly people. Think I’ll go back there soon!
BTW, Wreck ’em Tech!
Do I miss a chicken fried steak
When driving to Lubbock from Tennessee…..I rarely take the same route.
Me and the family will check this place out if swinging through Seymore.
Love that place
It is responsible for many of the lbs I am carrying today!

Nice write up. I’ve eaten there a few times on my way back to Tech. Even sat out some snow in there one trip. The owner was very nice and threw in free desert while I waited it out.

Thanks
Drove by this place many times and have never stopped. Deserves a visit if only for the decor!

What we need
is more places like this in west Texas and beyond. Good people, good food, lots of it, and the walls covered with red Raider stuff. This is what west Texas have to offer, not mountains or beaches, but what we have is what makes us love it out here.
Thanks for the memories
My family has frequented The Rock Inn in Seymore forever. We would travel to Frisco or Durant or Bonham, taking 82 out of Lubbock and if they were open when we went through (and My dad would be sure to time the arrival so we would find it open) we would stop and have lunch, dinner or breakfast, depending on the time. The food was always good and we were never disappointed. They are very friendly and I am sure many of the same people frequent this resturant all the time when traveling. I will offer up a HUGE! rec on this. If you haven’t stopped there, do. You will be happy you did.

1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Even from Houston
We will be traveling this way next time. We’ve stopped for much less before.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Been there, done that
and I highly recommend it unless you’re one burger or CFS away from a heart attack. Or have a strong dislike for cigarette smoke.
See It Everytime I go to Lubbock
I live in Tulsa & take I-44 to Wichita Falls & then Hwy 82 when I go to Lubbock. My folks also had a place for years at nearby Lake Kemp (about 15 mi NE of town) so we frequented this place often.
I’m usually in a hurry either trying to get to a game or get home. I must stop in next time & take my 3 kids to really authentic diner.
Thanks for the reminder!
Seymour
My Mother’s family is from Seymour. I have eaten at the Rock Inn probably 100 times throughout my life. My grandparents’ house was right there on the “Lubbock Highway” which was renamed the “California Highway” a few decades ago…I guess that’s the way of making Seymour seem a little more connected with the World.
I remember Sunday mornings at the Methodist Church followed by chicken fried steak and FRESH CUT REAL French Fries. You used to be able to see them cut them right by the counter before going to the fryer.
Summers out boating on Lake Kemp and winter mornings on the farm with a trusted American Pointer and a 20 gauge.
Thanks for the fond memories. It is a must-stop on 114, and it’s even worth an hour detour if you can make it.
So there you have it.......
Lubbock’s best resturant is not even in Lubbock.

Ha Ha!
That’s funny—and there’s a lot of truth to that. Gosh, I wish there was a Rock Inn Cafe in Lubbock.
Speaking of neat, out of the way places to eat—anyone ever eaten at the Green Frog Cafe in Jacksboro? That’s a cool place to dine on chicken fried steak, etc, also. They don’t have all the neat Tech stuff, though.
