Texas Tech Red Raiders 45, Kansas Jayhawks 34 | Post Game Thoughts
Box Score | Post Game Quotes
THE RESULT | WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE | Struggle to do much of anything the first few drives and bring it like gang-busters after the first three drives. When I go back and look at my game notes, it's incredibly discouraging from looking at the first three drives. I wrote that in the 3rd Kansas touchdown that LB Blake Dees lacked any awareness in that pass into the flat and he had trouble covering tight ends going into the middle of the field. On the first Kansas touchdown I wrote that Dees and LB Sam Eguavoen were both blocked into the second level, but that Kansas did a terrific job of blocking that rushing play. I mentioned this last week, which was that there were too many times by my very untrained eye that the linebackers weren't filling the right holes, but things changes around that 4th drive. At some point, and I had a difficult time determining when LB Cqulin Hubert and LB Daniel Cobb were substituted into the game, but they both had significant impacts. Two straight interceptions by SS D.J. Johnson ended any hopes and then you tack onto that two absolutely incredible and quick-striking offensive drives by the offense to pull Texas Tech back into the game. The fourth Texas Tech scoring drive was a 7 play drive that resulted in RB DeAndre Washington scoring from 1 yard out and the 5th drive, a 7 play drive that saw QB Seth Doege take another busted play, scrambles out of the pocket and finding WR Jacoby Franks for a score in the corner of the endzone. In the third, four, and fifth drives, they all resulted in scores. While K Donnie Carona nailed a 29 yard field goal. A punt and a missed field goal by Carona ended the half, but then Texas Tech went on touchdown scoring drives to open the second half. Ballgame.
THE STORYLINES
A SIMPLE SUBSTITUTION | I mentioned this above, but I wasn't sure when Cobb and Hubert were substituted into the game and after the game it was mentioned that Dees had ankle problem that led to Hubert being in the game. Still, Hubert and Cobb were huge. WS Cody Davis led the team in tackles, but Cobb finished with 11 tackles, and 1.5 TFL, while Hubert had 9 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1 sack, 1 force fumble, and 1 interception. That's not a bad days work having missed the first quarter. The defense continued to give up yards in the second half, but it was clear that they made a difference. They knew where they were supposed to be, they filled the lanes and they made plays. I know that DC Glasgow and Tuberville wanted to ensure that the team played fast, but Dees and Eguavoen aren't making plays and they're playing tentatively. And this isn't me saying that the defensive struggles are entirely the fault of Dees and Eguavoen, but I think they are playing a part. They are young and there is hope for the future with the two of them as they can mature, but right now, it seems clear to me that Hubert and Cobb are the guys that should be starting.
Additional Storylines and MVP's after the jump.
THE UNNOTICED PLAY | It was pointed out by the stellar play-by-play guy, but IR Cornelius Douglas' block to score WR Eric Ward on the first Texas Tech scoring drive was absolutely huge. Tuberville mentioned it after the game, but Douglas was also huge in special teams finishing with 4 tackles. That's your starting inside receiver. And to top it off, he finished his offensive day with 4 catches for 98 yards. Douglas will probably always have a bit trouble catching the ball, but he sure as heck knows how to block down the field, tackle on special teams and when he has the opportunity, he can make plays offensively. Just a terrific game from Douglas.
THIS MAY BE DOEGE AND THAT'S JUST FINE | QB Seth Doege didn't have an awful day, but it wasn't the best. He finished the day going 29 of 46, completing 64% of his passes, threw his first interception, but also threw 3 more touchdowns. It's respectable to have 7.8 yards per attempt and for the year, Doege has 14 touchdowns to just 1 interception. There were dropped passes, but there were also times that Doege lacked the ability to get the ball into the flat and short-hopped a handful of passes to receivers. But Doege was awfully good when the team really needed him to perform. Not perfect, but in the drives where Texas Tech scored, he was terrific running the hurry-up offense. I'd also add that Doege found 11 different receivers and there wasn't one receiver that had more than 4 catches. Doege makes sure that the defense can't focus on just one player and there isn't any part of the field that he doesn't see. And considering he was hit hard a couple of times and he got right back up and just kept making plays, I'm fine with his performance.
PICKING AT THE DEFENSE | Kansas has been pretty good offensively, but I think that this is the Texas Tech defense that you're going to have to live with for the rest of the year. Kansas had 478 yards of total offense, 239 yards rushing and 239 passing. Thinking off-hand, there isn't a remaining team on the schedule that can't run the ball effectively and the line is just going to have to shore things up inside, the secondary is going to have to learn to take better angles on receivers and the linebacker have to fill those holes and adjust to covering tight ends in the flat and over the middle. I wish I could pin-point one particular item where I could see improvement. The incredibly timely turnovers and the fact that the defense did only allow Kansas to score two second half touchdowns. After the third Kansas touchdown the defense did the following: interception, interception, punt, punt, touchdown, half, punt, interception, missed field go, down and touchdown. In KU's last 11 drives, Texas Tech forced a turnover on 3 of them and punts on the other three. If the offense continues to be that good, you can somewhat live with those results. It's not ideal, but it's honest. Be prepared to discuss the defensive difficiencies all year.
STELLAR OFFENSIVE PERFORMERS | Just another day at the office for WR Eric Ward and RB Eric Stephens. Ward had his third straight game of two touchdowns or more and finished the day with 4 catches for 71 yards. While Stephens had 125 yards rushing, 4.8 yards per carry, and 2 touchdowns. What Ward is doing over the course of three games is what makes just average players special players and Stephens should be talked about as one of the best running backs in the Big 12.
WTF PENALTIES? | There were a lot. I don't know what else to say, other than there were 17 different penalties for 154 yards and 6 of those penalties were against the offensive line, which I thought had their worst week by far in terms of pass protection and focus.
OFFENSIVE MVP | RB Eric Stephens | Worth candidates also include Ward, Douglas and Doege, but Stephens has been solid all year and those fumble concerns that Texas Tech fans have had are hopefully things of the past.
DEFENSIVE CO-MVP's | LB Cqulin Hubert and LB Daniel Cobb | I had reservations about whether or not Cobb would ever see the field again after being demoted in the fall practices, but he's been keeping himself busy and I can't say enough about how much Cobb and Hubert impacted this game.
SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | K Donnie Carona | Those low-trajectory field goals seem to be a thing of the past and although Carona missed a 54 yard attempt (twice), both attempts looked good, as did the 46 yard make. Carona has gotten something right since two years ago.

Something I noticed
I think we’ve still got significant problems, but here is one good thing I noticed. We seem to be better conditioned than the teams we have faced. Kansas was just flat out winded… early in the third quarter. And it just got worse. The announcer even mentioned that Tech would pour it on in an increasing way, and they seem to be able to do that. The Ags are complaining about their strength and conditioning, so this may be something that plays big this coming week, and could explain aggys failures in the 2nd half.
Just something to watch.
Antiswarm
I have a poetic license
I don't know if we're better conditioned
I hope that’s the case, but I think it was because we have such depth at receivers and to a lesser extent backs, that we can bring in a fresh set of skill players every down. If KU wanted to, they could have slowed the tempo simply by subbing in at least one player on D as the O can’t snap until the D has a chance to sub if the O has subbed. Of course KU didn’t have the depth at D to do that, nobody but OU or UT really does.

I paid close attention...
to people who were not being subbed for, such as our front line. As well as folks like Stephens who ran time and time again and didn’t even look winded. KS was winded within the first series after halftime, and the announcers even noticed it. So I think we were better conditioned. I also noticed that Tech continued to increase that pressure as the game went on. I know we have HUGE problems, but I think it is evident that, at least in these 4 games, Tech has been better conditioned and more athletic than our opponents.
I have a poetic license
I thought we looked more athletic as well
but our d-line looks skinny, but we definitely didn’t look like we got pooped.
I listened some to the Kansas broadcast
And in the third qtr they could only say, we look too tired to keep up anymore.
ut is "The Evil Empire"
DJ Johnson
After 2 grossly missed tackles that set up KU TDs, I thought he should probably take a seat. He struggles in run support, but made up for it with the INTs at key times.
"Corn Dog"
I mentioned his outstanding all around play in the post-game thread. He very much deserves to be a team captain in this weeks game against aTm.

Team Captain would be a very good idea
Cornelius Douglas had the most receiving yards (98) followed by Ward with 71.

Doege threw to him a couple of times
albeit, they were not great throws, but we tried. Amaro is still adjusting to the pace of the game, unfortunately. He looked a bit tired towards the end of the game. Should come along really well though, but an entire off-season will do wonders for this kid.
My Thoughts
As Antiswarm mentioned above, I agree with you about the conditioning. I think it is a big factor in most of the games so far. Everyone is ready to go at the start of the game, but the third and fourth quarters are huge for Tech because that are physically and mentally staying solid. I think the better teams we play coming up with have more of that also, but it is something good Tubbs has done well. Running the ball is another. Not nearly as flashy as the old air-raid, but as I told my wife it was great for the end of the game, instead of some quick three and outs with by passing every down we were able to control the clock and win. In the past we might have one also, but it might have meant defending the end zone and winning 45-44 by breaking up the last play. Also, I agree with Seth, we will have to deal with defensive deficiencies this year, but I think it is because of the new system and youth more than anything. A very good foundation is being created and it will take some time. Tech just did not have the type of players when Tubbs took over the team that he wants for his defense. So, I think the next year or two, we will continue to improve. (I hope!) This year will be shaky, but I believe the future is bright.
Guns Up!
Personal Scorecard
Conditioning = A – (Good to the fourth quarter)
DLine size = C – (Absolutely no push)
Doege = A (Spreading out the spread)
Special Teams = A – (McRabbit needs to run one)
Linebackers = B – (Sometimes hot, sometimes not)
Receiving corps = B + (More receivers to complement Moore)
Coaching on offense = B + (Decent play calling)
Coaching on defense = C + (adjustment needed for first half)
Coaching overall = B – (Winning is largely inspiration with some perspiration)

courage to substitute
I absolutely love the courage coach Glasgow has to change anyone, and I mean anyone, who is not performing. He adjusts well to the situation and this is something tech has not historically done. Hats off to Glasgow for doing what’s needed to win.
Very Good Day Yesterday
Tech wins
Aggies lose
Baylor loses-this is important for me. Being from Central Tx, and all the green koolaid flowing from Wacko.
Rangers wins
Could have been a perfect day if uT lost. But 4 outa 5 aint bad.

We're #28 & #29
Aggies are still ranked at 2-2 which kills me. Leaving a 2 loss team in the Top 25 this early in the season is just perverse. It’s like the voters refuse to admit they were wrong.

Supposing this Tech team can pull it off and beat A&M, which I'm not sure it has the talent on defense to make that happen
I’d rather they did it as an unranked team, just to 100% cement the Aggie season collapse.
Voters HATE dropping teams all the way
out when they put them in the top 10 to start the year. They get some imaginary free pass in the hopes the team turns it around and keeps them from looking like boobs.
With a D that has given up an average of 540 yards in each of the past 2 games...
…how could we think we’d be rated in the Top 25. We have a long way to go.
Take the "P" out of "Pirate" and I'm "Irate"!!!
I missed part of the 1st half.
I’ve wondered why Glasgow didn’t include Fehoko early in the season. Now that he’s gone, I wonder if he would have made a big impact. The younger linebackers may have practiced better but Fehoko may have been a better gamer.
When I quit watching to go to my function we were down by 20. When I sit down to eat lunch we were ahead. Glad to see us come out with a win.

Momentum
I like that the schedule has given us a greater challenge each week and Tech continues to improve. I love that we are controlling the clock better and have mental toughness. It takes a lot of poise to overcome the deficits that our young defense has created. The second half performances have been great.
After watching the Texas and Baylor games yesterday, I think we can compete with them. We haven’t been showing all our cards so the team can fly under the radar. Look out Texas. Tubs has been wanting to take down Mac Brown since that end of game “welcome to the Big 12” handshake last year.
I just don't understand
The “we haven’t been showing all our cards” comments. Granted, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I just don’t get the fact that there are folks out there that actually think that we have been bad, at times, on purpose or as part of some deception.
"There is no chance he will win, but if you think about it carefully he would be a pretty good candidate. He says a lot with no substance, he's proven he can be bought, he's dishonest, and he has the personality of a TV evangelist so I think he would be perfect in Washington!"-- Mike Leach (When asked if he would vote for Craig James for Senate)
Holding back plays and schemes only works when all is well and the team is operating
We’ve been too far behind this season for the “we haven’t been showing all our cards” to be valid.
We haven't seen it all
This team has more depth than what we’ve seen. My opinion is that a lot of the team struggles are due to seasoning the freshmen in low pressure games. This isn’t a national championship team but I think Tubs has a much better hand than he’s let on to this point.
I don't think we were holding back plays
When we were fighting for our life against Nevada.
Also wish we’d have saved that halfback pass from Torres for next week, unless that is triggering another option and forces ayunem to prepare for it.

Random Thoughts...
I tweeted to the LUbbock reporters that I thought Doege was playing hurt. He checked down a lot and Brown called for a lot of swing passes/WR screens. It just seemed that he lacked the strength for any deep passes. Plus, you may have noticed that he struggled to get his passes to his WRs; many of them forcing the receiver to come back or catch them on their knees. Something to watch for the tamu game.
Second, the defense going to get better over time. But we will have to live through this season of very young players. They are scrappy and make mistakes, but also make plays. I thought they did a much better job in the 2nd half making adjustments. I believe Kansas had over 300 yards at the half. Plus, we gave them the ball quite a bit after we went on our scoring run. Stay the course. We are still a 7/8 win team in 2011. The run will be next season and on…
4-0
I’m happy with that. Now let’s make fun of A&M all week and then kick their ass to complete the meltdown.

Return of Mackey..
Didn’t show up on the stat sheet, but his return was very surprising and recognized. He was in on several key plays/stops.
Texas Tech is 4-0 for just the eighth time in school history, fifth time in the last 35 years.
The last time Tech scored 45 points in a true road game against a Big 12 opponent? Oct. 25, 2008 against Kansas.
True freshmen/first-year players accounted for 123 of the Red Raiders’ 530 yards and seven of the team’s 45 points.
Tech has led at the half in just four of its last 14 regular season games. The Red Raiders’ record in that span is 9-5.
The last time Tech gave up 20 or more points in the first quarter and won was against UTEP in 2007. The Miners outscored the Red Raiders 21-7 in the first quarter, but ended up losing 45-31.
Tech has won its Big 12 opener for the first time since 2008.

Here's the story
When Tuberville was hired, there were a lot of people on DTN who were extremely excited and a lot of people who were skeptical (as per usual). I thought it was funny that there was a mad rush to give him a new nickname, before he even coached a game. We had all kinds of versions of West Texas Drifter and Clint Eastwood flyin’ around. So me, still being on the skeptical side, said we should just call him Jesus. Then someone (I think it was raider realist) said we should combine it with his old nickname of “The Riverboat Gambler” and he suggested “Catfish Jesus” We’ve had several variations including John Fitzgerald Katfish, etc. Last August, I was writing one of the Belltower articles and thought I’d throw my support to Tuberville and created that picture. I’ve always thought it would look cool on a T-shirt. Everything looks better in spanish.

It inspired me to write this song:
I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right. Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But it’s all right now, in fact, it’s a gas!
But it’s all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas
Jumping jack flash, it’s a gas

Fight, Raiders Fight!
Toughness and aggressiveness trumps speed alone.
In the first quarter, Tech obviously looked very tentative and reactionary to Kansas’ offense rather than being aggressive and pro-active. Tech changed that somewhat when we substituted Hubert and Cobb. They may not have the speed of Dees and Equaveon but are more experienced and tougher. Suggest they open the game against the Aggies.
Tubbs puts a lot of emphasis on speed and pace. He also talks regularly of downsizing in attempt to get more speed. He needs to emphasize toughness and quickness on defense more than speed.
"Sure, luck means a lot in football. Not having a good quarterback is bad luck." Don Shula
Not only that, but experience...
to me, the flaws came down to experience and knowing where to be on the play. Hubert and Cobb know where to be, period. Keep them in the game.
Then why not split the pairs?
Play Cobb and Dees and Hubert and Sam. That way the experience can help the youth get lined up and fill the right holes.

We won.
That’s all that really matters. It was ugly, but if ugly wins are what we can get this year then I will take as many as the other team is willing to give us.
The defense is what it is. We need better D-Linemen or at least grow up the ones we do have (Kinda smallish for the most part). Too many offensive lineman getting into the second level of our defense and that makes it tough. Couple that with the fact that sometimes our LB’s get confused or fill the wrong gap and that makes for horrible run defense. If the ball keeps bouncing our way on these tipped balls then so be it. We have to take what we can get this year. Russian Coffee needs to figure out why his DB’s are still getting consistently beat deep despite the fact that they line up 8 yards off of the ball.
Free Neal Brown on offense and we will be fine! When everybody but the water boy gets a target or a reception on offense that’s a good day! Little worried about Doege’s arm strength yesterday. It did seem a little off. I hope that he is not playing with some sort of injury. Could somebody please come up with some plays for McRabbit on offense. That kind of speed needs to get some touches on something other than kick returns…

I completely agree
Here’s hoping our defensive staff went to school yesterday and learned a little something about gameday Hubert and Cobb.
From Glasgow’s resume, I would think our db’s should be performing at a higher level.
- I feel our team is displaying strong resilience. Seems they have been coached to see 4 quarters of playing time.

Having seen what speed can do for other teams, Tech needs to utilize their speed, too. That may be about the only thing that they may be “holding back” on, so Aggie will get a taste of it this week…..just saying.

Doege
I noticed the same thing about some of his throws. He seemed to really struggle throwing to the out routes. I know that’s a tough throw, but we’ve seen him make it in other games.
Watching the game on TV, it appeared Doege was wearing a flak jacket under his pads and jersey. Has he always worn that, or does he have some type of recent rib or back injury? Anybody know?

Think he's banged up a little
O-line needs to block a little better. Also, hope NBrown’s giving a little work to Karam and the other back ups.
How about some love for DeAndre Washington?
I have been so pleasantly surprised by his play this year. Coming in with none of the hype of Marquez, Williams, or Daniels, I thought he’d get buried on the depth chart. Instead, he’s been electric when he gets the ball.
WTF?
Texas is #10 in the Coaches Poll??

Hard for some to realize that they had overhyped a team that badly.
You take your wild-ass guess at week 1 and then you have to slowly reconcile it with reality.
Be a team. Be the most excited to play. Be the best at doing your @#&$ing job.
Polls are largely just a popularity vote.

Hey now
they beat the power house, national power, and world beating Iowa State Cyclones.
They deserve the #1 spot, I mean common, they’re Texas.
Game Stats
Look at the stats from the UT vs. ISU game. Take away a couple of ISU turnovers, and that was a very close game.

We shouldn't be ranked
Until we beat a team with a winning record
After we beat TA&M we should be ranked
But if we beat TA&M they won't have a winning record LOL!
Can you say overrated.
American farmers feed & clothe the world!
Funny how Texas is the only team than can beat unranked teams and go up on rankings.

Just a quick look
it appears TTU is the only BCS conference undefeated team not ranked, and it looks like us and Houston are the two unbeaten teams not ranked.
I’m okay with no love in the polls, as long as we beat the aggies.
i mean,
it’s nothing new. we just gots to keep on keepin on

Maybe if we paint our field like the Jaguars we will confuse the aggies into running in circles??

I think you confuse an aggie by putting them in a round room and telling them to go pee in the corner.

Nice finish
4-0 is where we’re supposed to be at this point so that’s a good thing. Defense has a lot of work to do but looked much better the second half. Lets hope the Jones at night forces the aggies to trip a few times. It’s going to take tech’s best effort to win against the aggies. If I could have one game this year it’s a win against those aggies. Lets hope we have a game plan like we did in 2008 against the horns.

This is the one we really need.
I was hoping that ATM would come in over confident, and we could catch them off guard. Now, after losing two games by a totla of 3 ponts, I am sure they are pissed. You know there are two games left on their schedule that are circled, and they are Tech and the Thornes.
Both Copy Cat State and Arkansas were able to spread out the field and pass all day long on ATM. I know Tubby is stressing the running game, but we should have put 60 on KU. This team peforms better when we are throwing to set up the run.
Our defense is not good enough, well quite frankly, Russian Coffee is cold, and if Tubby thinks we can outscore teams 45-38, its not going to work. We need to score 60.
So, get rid of Nascar, and let stick to Air Raid.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
A Blackout at the Jones
Has always had an effect on the opposing team and our crowd. I think the NASCAR showed its positive effects by wearing down the Dline.
The problem i see is that the two opponets they lost to are far supeior to all the teams we have played combined.
I will accept a win by 1 point. Then the Aggies will have lost 3 games by 4 points.

Texas A&M hasn’t been favored to beat #TexasTech in Lubbock since 1999. No. 5-ranked Aggies were 15.5-point favorites in ’99, lost 21-19.

So now I see on my Verizon guide:
LHN is replaying espn college football final. So now espn is basically treating LHN as “Ocho” ( or espn 4 for those who didnt see “Dodgeball.” I know 4 is quatro)

And you’re a junior or Duece?
I had a friend at Tech who was a quatro. That would just be the coolest name all time. Instead of going by Phillip Smith Johnson IV, just say, Hi, Quatro, nice to meet ya.

Last Chance to Scream at Aggies!
Texas Tech needs to send them crying into the night. Last chance because A&M will never play at the Jones again.
we would have one heckuva defense if
all our opponents had to play skins… i’ve never seen so much jersey grabbing as an excuse for attempted tackles in…my…life. i don’t have the gut to go back and re-watch the game and count how many of our guys on defense grabbed ball carrier’s jerseys (a lot of times when they could have wrapped ’em up and taken ’em down).
good thing doege &co. can put points on the board.
