Texas Tech Red Raiders Football | First Half MVP's
This is a cheap way to get up some content on DTN and there is no better content that you all thinking things through in the comments. Since it is the middle part of the season and because I've seen other blogs do the same thing, I thought I'd mimic them (finest form of flattery) and ask you who the mid-season MVP's are for Texas Tech.
OFFENSIVE MVP | QB SETH DOEGE | I think this one is fairly simple and relatively easy, without Doege's steady arm at the helm during what turned out to be games that were all too close against Nevada and Kansas, I think he was a huge, and maybe the biggest, reason why Texas Tech won both of those games. Doege's faultered a bit this past week and the week before, but he's still having a solid season, completing 70% of his passes with 18 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, all the while he's the #4 passing leader (in total yards) in the country. If I had to pick some players that would be candidates other than Doege, I don't think that you could go wrong with RB Eric Stephens and WR Eric Ward.
DEFENSIVE MVP | DT KERRY HYDER | I had a tough time trying to figure out who this should be and this naturally makes sense considering the overall lack of success of this defense (82nd overall, 111th in rush defense and 20th in pass defense). You could certainly make the case that maybe D.J. JOhnson (some big plays against Kansas), WS Cody Davis (2nd on the team in tackles with 7.40), or even freshman surprise LB Blake Dees (3rd on the team with 5.00 tackles per game, 4.0 TFL and 2 force fumbles). But it was Hyder who I think was the MVP of two different games that I watched thus far and although the rush defense is abysmal, I've still been impressed with Hyder's ability to have an impact on the game, but isn't showing up on the boxscore. I love the fact that he's a sophomore, so there's something to build here with Hyder.
SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | RB BEN MCROY | I was going to go with a bunch of question marks, or even if you had asked me two weeks ago, I would have thought about K Donnie Carona, but having two kicks blocked (I understand that they may not have been entirely his fault) or the general lack of performance of the special teams, I thought it would be in appropriate to consider someone for a special teams MVP, but McRoy earned it and he's been electric on kickoff returns, when he's been healthy. And it shouldn't surprise you that McRoy is 19th in the nation at a 27.95 yards per return average, which is considerably higher than anything that Stephens had done previously, or Jamar Wall or Edward Britton for that matter.
As an aside, I'm praying that no one correlates the fact that Fitsum is now 0-2 as a child of Seth C. Please, ignore that last sentence.
Anyway, I've given you my MVP's would love to hear who you think are the team MVP's in the comments.

Deoge (fact)
Davis (regrettably)
James (ummm…)
On a more serious note, it appears that we now run more formations in which James is involved or has an increased responsibility. Is this based upon his tenure, a difference in scheme, or perhaps a boomerang affect to avoid any appearance of impropriety?
Speaking of James...
Where’s Jace Amaro?

Doege, Bullitt, McRoy
As to the “where’s Jace?”
Awhile back on his twitter, he posted an “i’m sorry” message, very similar to what Ronnie Daniels did last month. Now, he’s still been posting things (mostly “inspirational messages”) and what not, and he’s not “suspended”, but I kinda think there’s a gap in some aspect of where the coaching staff wants him and where he seems to be. Not saying he broke rules, or has a bad attitude or anything like that, but basically the life-style change that comes with moving to college is a big deal, and some take a little time to get accustomed. Hopefully, he’ll start playing more as the season goes on, but not sure.
I hadn't thought oh that

OMVP – Doege
DMVP – DJ Johnson
STMVP – McRoy
Thought I’d never say Johnson after how much I bagged on him last season but he has done a good job getting to the ball and making tackles.
Doege has super potential if we’re calling the right plays. I like his accuracy despite the KS train wreck. Doege has me feeling good about next season.
McRoy is just great and will eventually break away for a Kick off return. Love the speed this kid has. Also, can’t wait to see his brother enter the picture next season. Carona does nothing for me. Doesn’t kick the ball to the endzone on kick offs and has a low tradjectory for field goals.

Carona's trajectory on onside kicks is nice though.
I know next to nothing about kicking. But until the FG unit stops completely blowing blocking assignments, there is no reason to be concerned about Carona’s performance.
good thinking
I agree witht he Offensive MVP and Speical Teams MVP
But The Defensive MVP is Terrance Bullit. There is noone that hustles more than he does, and he may not be lighting it up on the stat sheet but i think this is due to the fact that the offense does not go his way. QB’s arent throwing to him. In the NFL the best cornerbacks do not have the best stats because the ball does no go there way very much. Bullit is the same way and makes big plays on defense. I am not going on stats just what I see on the field.
Alex Torres should be added to both OMVP and STMVP
Torres has hustled out there and caught some tremendous acrobatic catches and if it had not been for his assist we would not have got the on-side kick against Kan-St
I do agree with Stephens and Doege for OMVP and McRoy for STMVP
I would add Carona to the STMVP. The blocked kicks were not his fault. The first one was a distance he has never made and with the long distance the ball needed to be kicked low and long.

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
I've blamed my shirts, my hats, my friends and even my underwear for Tech losses
But kids should probably get a pass from football superstitions. “The sins of the father’s team should not be visited upon the son” is in the College Football Bible. Wise words.
BTW my friend that I blamed for Tech Bowl losses over the years (he and I went to the 95 & 2005 Cotton Bowls, the 98 Independence Bowl and the 1996 and 2001 Alamo Bowls, all losses) turns out to have been blameless. He went to the Gallery Furniture Self Esteem Team Booster Bowl in January and Tech won that game. It turns out I’m the reason they lose any bowl game I attend.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
well you won't have to worry about that this time around.

Your story about waiting in the parking lot at the Cotton Bowl is priceless.

Agree with MVP's but...
Cody Davis should get some love on defense. Despite his coverage issues, he is one of our best tacklers and always gives it his all.

Offense: Doege is a good choice.
Defense: Hyder is a good choice.
Special teams: Corona hands down. He has improved his game to the point to where he is reliable, the blocks were not of his making, that was all OL. Corona’s improvement is a step change increase, if 20% of the team had made the same level of improvment, we would be undefeated at this point.
