Keys to the Game: Texas Tech vs Oklahoma
Make no mistakes.
The Sooners treated Texas like a red-headed step child, and now have 2 thoughts: doing the same to OSU and getting to the BCS title game. They currently have the longest home win streak in the nation (35 games) and have only lost 2 home games since Bob Stoops became the head coach. It sucks playing in Norman. Especially two years in a row. And in case you haven't heard, they are pretty good this year. For Texas Tech to come away with a win, we need to see some risks taken and no mistakes.
Landry Jones will play on Sundays and could out perform his predecessor. He does it behind a monster o-line, that has only allowed 3 sacks on the year and that also does a darn good job of opening up running lanes for Dominique Whaley. Look for Whaley to get 20+ touches, and don't be surprised if has a 100 yard day rushing...before the start of the 4th quarter if things go Oklahoma's way.
On the defensive side of the ball, OU is 9th in passing efficiency defense (22nd in yds/att) and 28th in yds/carry rushing. And they give up less than 16 points a game. So yes, they are pretty good on defense, too. Watch out for DE Frank Alexander. He is a sack machine, does a good job of getting his hands in the air and tipping the ball, and has an INT to his credit.
The Red Raiders are pretty close to matching pace with the Sooners on offense in terms of total offenses and scoring offense. I won't go into the depressing defensive statisitics for Tech, but I will poin tout that Glasgow knows how to beat OU in Norman, as TCU was the last team to do so. But ultimately for Tech to stay in this ball game, they are going to need to play mistake free. Tech needs someone to step up their game on offense. Get Marquez involved and see if he can make a play. Ward needs to break one as well. Crawford has led us against OU before, let's see if he can do it again.
Aside from this, here this week's keys to the game for Texas Tech.
Key #1: Make something happen.
To get a win, the Tech defense is going to have to take some risks and attempt to force something to happen. OU has turned the ball over 11 times this year. Tech has to take advantage of this and rob OU of a couple of possessions. Jump a route, put a hat on the ball. A short field and preventing OU from building momentum would be huge. I would rather have OU score because we took a chance and it didn't work out than to let them march up and down the field on us all day.
Key #2: No bad possessions.
Tech doesn't have to score every time they get the ball (though it would be nice). What we can't have are bad possessions, which I define as one ending in a turnover or a series of less than 7 plays. NASCAR has some advantages in that it helps the offense establish rhythm while limiting defensive substitutions and adjustments. On the flip side, 3 and out can happen twice as fast. The defense is going to be tested as it is. Don't make them play 40 minutes or leave them with their backs against the goal post.
Key #3: No turnovers.
A repeat of last weeks performance against KSU is unacceptable. Throws to the flat are going to get lit up and/or picked off against this defense. They are not the safe throw. OU will sit off the ball trying to bait Doege into this read pre-snap, and then close hard. Vertical routes, quick slants, shuffle passes, tunnel screens. Anything towards the middle of the field and not over Alexander. A tipped ball is an INT.
Wreck 'em!

Well though I would like to see some mistake free Raider Ball..
its unlikely they can escape Norman unscathed. That being said I dont think the Sooners will be error free either. Too much hype too much self imposed pressure… ie play perfect we are on National Tv type jitters. Having just listened to Seth C. talk to the Crimson and Cream Machine dudes.. who were very polite in the main.. I think the Sooners fans may be a little over done on this outing. Not over confident but over satiated. The C & C machine guys were a little smug and little to quick to point out how much they liked their victory.. ooohh ahh…in 2008. Yep it was beat down. But it has nothing to do with this years fracas. I Posted this earlier but it fits in nicely with your position NM99. The brawl is really Techs front 7 versus Ou offensive line and Techs O line versus the down linemen of ou. B. Venables likes to double up on the middle routes so I don’t really expect a lot of safety blitzes and corner fires early he doesn’t want a couple of 40 yarders sprung by Torres , Ward or Zouzalic. At least until L Jones has hung 21 on the Raider defense.
A. "Tech must Rush for 100 yards. On 20 plus RB carries." Seth C. has illustrated this several times over the last 4 years both Head coaches Leach and Tuberville win when a Tech Running Back gets over 100 yards in 20 (+) touches. This is a factor which has basically faced down all game time acid tests. It was true in the 2009 Cotton Bowl, just as it was true in the 2007 upset of OU in Lubbock, proving that rushing for 100 yards – sets up the short pass and gashes, punishes, takes advantage thereof , spoils and otherwise stifles the pass rush of the opposing defense. This factor plays into the game plan of running 90- 100 plays and keeps the opponent in a scoring track meet.
B. "B. Keep Seth Doege upright. > 1 sacks allowed. Hurries, rollouts, QB scrambles yes. Sacks no." Not letting the tech QB in spread offense with mid grade linemen and mid grade wideouts get swatted , hurried, shoved or otherwise hit by 290 pound fire breathing down linemen is well documented ..a confident, unbruised signal caller wearing a Tech uniform is a formidable opponent. If you make him run for his life more than 8- 10 times in our 70 or so touches the result is a very predictable 25 percent errant throws, dropped passes and missed spots of the open guy…remember .."just throw it to the open guy".. I bet Coach N. Brown has said this too.. it’s the basic tenet of the spread attack. The Tech assault is just based on touches with open field to go straight ahead on and dare the opponent to risk all to disrupt it’s rhythm.. Tech may very well get 25 plus first downs..if Doege stay a relatively un-drubbed.
C. C. "Disable the Sooner run game for less than 150 yards. I like our chances better on a pass play than some damned reach block going for 7 yards a pop. Sigh."
The fact is our current defensive coordinator would be pulling his hair out if he had any hair. Sorry dude. The Tech defense is / are trending upward. Mostly because Leon Mackey helps Scot Smith and vice versa.. I am not sure they will show much of that against the 5th best offense in the nation ( I thinks that’s where ESPN stat’s dude placed them.) The defenders are pretty good against rushing offense in spottie performances ie the first half versus Kstate and in 2nd half against aTm. They will get gouged up in this brawl. But if the def ends crash down a few times with success and the CB’s get a couple of non calls on pass break ups then they might get OU to punt 4- 5 times this game. That’s a victory folks. These guys scored 7 straight time on KU. Lets think this Vegas point spread over for a minute its basically saying no matter what the Tech Offense does the OU folks are going to score 4.5 times (td- 1.0 & FG =.5 score) yeah 4 nad a half time more than the Raiders do.. So even if Tech somehow scores 30 OU gets 60 (+) points which is just flat unsatisfactory . So how do the Raiders get to within striking distance in the last 60 seconds of regulation? Tech’s way cool coordinator has to get a run stop every series, or force a screen and an out route for 6 vice allowing 6.5 on first down rushes by the OU running backs. Any pass play OU throws ie plays- that doesn’t go for an explosive play 20 plus yards – plays into a Tech game plan. Clock stops on missed passes, out routes for first downs clock stops, as are those on the perimeter if’n they go out of bounds, even better knock them out of bounds it is infinitely better than pressurizing the Tech offense to match score for score in a tightly constrained, hostile venue, with all American defenders flying around trying to make the boomer sooner highlight reel. If they throw and Tech has any pass rush worth anything, then it gives the team a chance. If the Tech Defense allows 200 yards rushing and you will never get within 21 points. So Go Russian Coffee pull it all out Baby.. just win the fight down front . \\ Here is hoping.

taking risks
I brought up a few times on here that we have nothing to lose and we should use tons of trickery. Pull out the plays no one has seen yet. They may work.

This could be the greatest night of our lives...
Did you say over? Nothing’s over until we say it is!
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell, no! And it ain’t over now.
Germans?
You’re just kidding, right?
It was Japan that bombed Pearl Harbor…
Beat OU
Keep it close, and anything can happen.

Nice post
I also hate, hate, hate that stinking lick the OU band plays all game long.
Tech probably needs to shelve the bubble screen in this game. Against Tech, OU typically sits a safety right in the path.
Our band should answer every time they play "Oklahoma" with "Oh What a Beautiful Morning"
Broadway show tunes don’t belong at college football games. It’s only slightly less annoying than “Theme From Patton” & “Ballad of the Green Berets” over and over at an Aggie game.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
Agree...we should definitely stick with runinning the ball...
up the middle…a lot
not being a smart a** to you Tn Raider, that’s directed at our esteemed coach
"My, what big ears you have!"- Little Red Riding Hood presumably to Tommy Tuberville
Pretty awesome
to see Tech having a 9-2 (6-2 Big 12) season back in 2005 while Oklahoma was 6-4 (5-2 Big 12)

A snowball's chance in hell...
Those are our chances. I bet a guy at work on the game. Not that Tech would win, but rather we wouldn’t lose by more than 4 touchdowns…sad, I know, just sad. But that’s what we’ve been reduced to.
Pretty big Snowball Brother.. smile..
