Texas Tech Red Raiders 41, Oklahoma Sooners 38 | Post Game Thoughts

NORMAN, OK - OCTOBER 22: Offensive lineman Deveric Gallington #66 of Texas Tech celebrates with wide receiver Alex Torres #86 after Torres' reception for a touchdown in the first half against the Oklahoma Sooners October 22, 2011 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma. Box Score | Post Game Quotes

"On a national level, you don't read too much about Texas Tech. You haven't seen much about them on TV and I bet you will see it for the next few days and we will be proud of that. When you go on the road and beat a number one team, it is really special, almost impossible to do."
- Head Coach Tommy Tuberville on How Special The Win Was For Him

THE RESULT | SHOCKING | That's the only word, right? I'm not trying to say that some of you didn't believe that it could happen, but I think for the most part, as Oklahoma was embarking on its 40th straight win and Texas Tech was without two starters on defense and two on offense, that there wasn't going to be much of a chance to win the game. I mentioned after the game that I hope no one writes what people have written about Missouri last year, that Gabbert had an off night and Texas Tech and Tuberville shouldn't get credit for beating a team where its quarterback was having a bad night. Well, here's some news, when teams lose, usually their quarterback struggles and you can choose to chalk it up to the quarterback singularly or you can choose to believe that a player doesn't play in a vacuum and that there are things that can affect how that player plays, including the defense.

Right now, this is Tommy Tuberville's signature win and he and his staff earned every bit of it. I thought Glasgow and Brown called masterful games last night. Not perfect games, but they both had their respective squads tuned in to what they needed to do and I thought they played their tail off on both sides of the ball.

THE STORYLINES

CALLING THE DEFENSE | DC Chad Glasgow was already down two starters before this thing even started, but he was on his game on Saturday. A couple of things stood out to me. On third or passing downs, Glasgow employed three defensive ends, including usually DE Leon Mackey and DE Scott Smith at the end spots and usually DE Jackson Richards lined up inside along with another defensive tackle, most likely DT Kerry Hyder. I don't know if this was a result of Langley being out, but Glasgow obviously wanted to put some pressure on OU QB Landry Jones and from watching the game, it's clear that Jones is less accurate the more pressure he feels. This was a way to create pressure. And honestly, this was the perfect game for Smith and Mackey in that they probably knew that Jones wasn't going to run and if there was ever a game where they could just rush up the field without a worry or care as to containment, this was it. I hadn't seen Mackey and Smith in a game together and talk about a significant difference. If those two play together the entire year, I think we're talking about different outcomes. They are difference makers.

CALLING THE OFFENSE | How do you stop an over-aggressive defense that you know is going to bring the house each and every time? Mix in plenty of screens and draws and you'll have a defense on their heels. OC Neal Brown calling the game was something. He seemingly toyed with the OU defense for the entire game, although it helps to have a quarterback smart enough to implement the game-plan. Brown calling for the Torres bubble screen, for two first quarter touchdown plays was a thing of beauty, as were the draw plays. Those draw plays were a delayed handoff and it wasn't just a quick and short delay, but a purposeful two second delay and it create a situation where OU couldn't just rush up the field, because when they did, either RB Aaron Crawford or RB DeAndre Washington would take advantage of an over-aggressive defense.

I know that some of you still don't like the type of offense that Neal Brown runs. It's not Leach's Air-Raid. Honestly, I never wanted Brown to try to replicate what anyone else has ever done because that would always be a failure. Brown called 96 offensive plays and ran the ball 44% of the time, which is just about what he has averaged this year. The reason that no one is complaining about that is that Texas Tech won and even though the offense has been doing what it's been doing for some time, I think this is the offense that Brown wants, but I think he's probably want a little bit better yard per carry average, 4.4 YPC for Crawford and Washington, that's still pretty darned good. And being able to effectively run the ball does help run out the clock. It doesn't help in the second to last OU drive where OU was sitting on running the ball, but Tuberville had to run the ball if he wanted to force OU to call their timeouts, and he did. OU obviously didn't let Texas Tech get a first down or even a yard, but it did force OU to burn timeouts that they would probably need.

Additional Storylines and MVP's after the jump.

Star-divide

TRUST YOUR BENCH | I also absolutely loved Glasgow's ability to trust his bench. WS Cody Davis apparently screwed up last night, missing a tackle and his backup, Brett Dewhurst played most of the game:

"He missed a tackle," defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow said. "He put his head down and missed a tackle on the first play, and Brett Dewhurst came in and did some good things. I was confident with either one out there, and they made some plays."

Glasgow isn't afraid to make a change or replace a player. He also isn't afraid to go 20 deep on the defense and he knew that with a face paced offense, he was going to have to give the starters an entire series or two off. Glasgow trusted his bench to the point that he had little-used CB Sawyer Vest in the game when it was getting awfully close. Vest did get burned on a touchdown grab, he just didn't get in position in time, but don't think for a second that Glasgow didn't go right back to Vest the very next series and OU and Jones tried to take advantage of that. Sure, Vest gave up a touchdown, but so did the most athletic cornerback on the team, Tre' Porter, and I thought that was a much uglier play (it was the first OU touchdown) than Vest's. The point being is that Glasgow couldn't win this game without playing a handful of players and he did and it worked.

OFFENSIVE STARS | For me, it starts with QB Seth Doege (63% and 8.4 yards per attempt). He executed the game-plan to almost perfection. I couldn't think of a throw that I thought was in jeopardy of being intercepted the entire night. And that game-plan, which is try to stretch the field, complete everything short and intermediate and don't turn the ball over, isn't easy. And it was obvious that Brown wanted to try to get WR Darrin Moore the ball, early and often, but Moore still isn't up to speed and probably four or five of Doege's incomplete passes were of that variety. Even though he tarted Moore, Doege spread the wealth, which is something he's done all year long as not one receiver caught more than 6 passes. WR Eric Ward continues to make tough catches, although he did have one drop that I think he knows he should have made (I even think it was a 3rd down). IR Alex Torres absolutely shined, catching only four passes for 94 yards and three going for touchdowns. WR Marcus Kennard came up with 3 big catches and the announcers mentioned that he was five inches taller than his opponent and every pass was the variety where he could go up and get it. Also really enjoyed the appearance of WR Aaron Fisher, who I think is going to have a tremendous career at Texas Tech before it's all said and done (he's only a redshirt sophomore). I have gone six games this year, intentionally, without mentioning a certain player, and will not be petty for the sake of being petty, but Adam James did have a good game as well.

PLAYING IT SOFT | Some of you may have actually listened to the podcast I did with Crimson and Cream Machine, but in it, I said that I thought that Texas Tech should give up the short to intermediate passing game. I don't know if Texas Tech called a blitz the entire night and forcing Jones to make those plays, under pressure from the three defensive ends to rush the quarterback. This worked as the defense did a terrific job of containing, especially in the first half.

HELLO, MY NAME IS ERIC WARD AND I'M A RECEIVER FOR TEXAS TECH AND WHEN I DON'T CATCH THE BALL, IF YOU ARE AN OPPOSING TEAM DEFENDER, YOU SHOULD REALLY HAVE YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL | Hat-tip MDRaider06.

DEFENSIVE STARS | The defensive line isn't going to have much, if any statistics to back up their solid play, but DT Kerry Hyder and DT Dennell Wesley were fantastic. They kept the OU offensive line off of the Texas Tech linebackers and Wesley exhibited enough strength and power to get a tackle for los on his own. I've already mentioned how big of an impact Mackey and Smith made, it's unbelievable how good they are. Richards will step into Smith's shoes next year and Texas Tech won't lose a step. LB Daniel Cobb and SS Terrance Bullitt were all over the place, being completely wreckless at times, notching 9 tackles, 2.5 TFL, and 1 forced fumble. Bullitt had 8 tackles and 2.0 TFL. Big props to FS D.J. Johnson who forced Oklahoma's first turnover by stripping All-American WR Ryan Broyles. Johnson also finished the game with 5 tackles. Somehow, Texas Tech finished with zero sacks and only one quarterback hurry. Those are the official stats, but that's not an accurate picture of what happened. Collectively, the Texas Tech defense adequately stopped the Oklahoma running game and harassed Jones to the point that they were largely ineffective when it mattered. OU lost that game in the first quarter and first half, thanks to a defense that played their rears off.

GOING FOR IT | I don't have too much more time, but here's my thoughts on Tuberville and when he decides to be bold and when he doesn't. My thought is that Tuberville likes to take a very calculated approach to going for it on 4th down and other "risky" plays, like going for it on 4th down with Jackson Richards trying to rush for 4 yards. I think that Tuberville will go for it when he thinks he doesn't have anything to lose, i.e. playing in Norman as a 29 point underdog. When he does think he has an advangage, he's not going to be so aggressive, and I don't know if I can blame him. Against Kansas St., I'm sure he kept telling himself, "just be patient, Doege won't turn the ball over a second, third and fourth time." He plays the percentages and don't be surprised not to see the same "go for it" coach against Iowa St. I'm guessing that Tuberville thinks that he's got a better team than Iowa St. and he doesn't need to be as agressive.

OFFENSIVE MVP | QB SETH DOEGE AND OC NEAL BROWN | Two huge performances.

DEFENSIVE MVP | LB DANIEL COBB AND DC CHAD GLASGOW | Cobb fills in more than adequately for an injured LB Blake Dees and for me, I see the potential that Glasgow brings to this program.

SPECIAL TEAMS MVP | K DONNIE CARONA | Get a handful of field goals blocked the last two weeks? No problem. Carona calmly kicks two huge field goals, which ended up being the difference in winning this game and losing this game (OU's kicker missed a chip-shot).

This tells us something !

The Red Raiders gave up a 55-yard run to Roy Finch during Oklahoma’s first series but surrendered only 69 rushing yards the rest of the game. That’s a major step forward for the 111th-ranked rush defense.

Best all-around effort since Tubs has been here

I can’t say enough about the O-Line, especially Gallington.
I can’t say enough about the D-Line. They are beasts. They pressured and disrupted Jones without much help.
I can’t say enough about Doege. The dude has “it:”. It amazes me that he how little he has played in the last five years.
I can’t say enough about the RB’s. They are getting about the same production as when Stephens was playing.
I can’t say enough about the staff. They finally brought their “A” game and put it all together.
I can’t say enough about the receivers. Swindall’s TD catch? Ridiculous! Torres’ screens and Ward’s block. Amazing!
I can’t say enough about the LB’s. Cobb meeting the RB in the hole on a key 3rd down. Just what the doctor ordered.
I can’t say enough about the DB’s. Johnson’s strip was huge as was the interception.
I can’t say enough about the special teams. No glaring mistakes!

Could we quibble about some of the play calling near the end of the game? Sure. Vest’s brain freeze allowing the late TD? Absolutely.

But a win is a win. They played and coached well enough to win by giving maximum effort, being well coached, and executing their duties better than OU executed their duties.

Let’s keep the ball rolling fellows and your fat little girlfriends at bay.

gallington! he had never played a snap at center in his life!

he was rocky at first but the amazing thing is that it didnt cost us much in the long run.. Sure there were about 3-5 plays where doege has to throw it away but they managed to get it straightened out early. we punched em dead in the mouth and kept fightin all game. They were expecting us to “respect the no. 3 next to their name and play scared”. I think the rain delay and the PB & J sandwiches were the X factors

Matt Moore, man

I feel like every year it gets harder and harder to keep him on the payroll, because every year it seems like he pulls out some ridiculous O-Line switcheroos that gets this team out of a hairy situation.

Right on Arid-Zone about the O-Line !

O-Line and Gallington ! I will add Carpenter. What it looked like is McDaniel was already on the right covering that spot so he was not available for Center, Coach Moore made do with a guy who never played the spot, Gallington, and between G and the Doege, they made it work.

They came though big time this week.

This

was a very good win for Tech. The kids gave it their all and seemed to have confidence in what they were asked to do. The coaches did a good job with the majority of the calls in my opinion. Unlike some, I was excited to see us fake a punt, and go for it a few times, when perhaps we should not have. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

Being at the game

most of the fans in our section agreed the fake punt was a gutsy call and would love to see more or those types of risks. From our vantage point, several people thought it looked like the spot was OU favorable, but could have been our viewpoint!

by MatadorProud on Oct 24, 2011 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

The issue with replay on the fake punt is that most cameras got faked out too

All the closeup cameras were on the punter, the rushers & the return man. The tackle was only captured by a long shot of the whole field. It was too far to tell one way or another where the ball got to.

great calls on 4th down

an underdog on the road with the lead. i agree with Seth’s interpretation of why they did.. but its almost as if the staff remembered how bad things turned out layin up in the past few weeks… or they read the posts on DTN!

It kind of figures that almost no one on the national level got to watch that happen

but I’ll take a win no one saw over a well-publicized loss any day.

Quick Thoughts:
-OCNB brought his A game, and I was extremely gratified to see a level of humility in his willingness to change up the usual gameplan to take advantage of OU’s defensive quirks. Having watched Venables’ defenses year after year, I feel like they’re a pretty good acid test for which offensive staffs have their poop in a pile in terms of pre-game preparation. They victimize teams (including past Leach offerings) that rely on a few plays that they execute almost to perfection, as Venables is 100% willing to give up a few points if it means he can have his guys jump a route or blow up a run in the backfield and create that atmosphere of intimidation and chaos. Tech turned the tables on them and that’s hard enough on the road, so OCNB and the crew deserve all the credit in the world.

-Seth Doege might not actually be human, as humans typically don’t live very long when you replace all their blood with ice water. Love this kid and it’s a shame that he’s not going to get full credit for his awesomeness because of the “Ho-hum just another Tech Quarterback” label

-The 4th down calls and the fake punt were excellent. I don’t see it as ballsy, because it’s obvious that the offense is the strongest piece on this team, and anything that puts them out on the field is something that can help win the ballgame. So: not ballsy, just smart.

-John Locke is calling this defense pretty well and I think he might soon discover the true secrets of The Island.

Actually the rain delay pushed 2/3 of the game on nationwide TV

The Stanford game ended about 10:00 CST and the half of the country carrying the Pac 12 game started watching Tech-OU. Baseball fans probably switched to the ABC game at the end of the World Series game. We were the only show in town between 10:00 -12:00 AM.

wasn't aware of that, I'd heard somewhere that only about 10% of ABC's national audience for the evening ended up getting to watch this game

as the affiliate I was dealing with were originally carrying Tech/OU but swapped to Stanford when the weather delay kicked in, then evidently decided to stay with Stanford as the weather delay got extended.

Awesomely Awesome

EVERY YEAR, I have to listen to Brent Mussburger rant on about how much smarter Brent Venables is smarter than whoever leads the offense of an underdog team against OU. He does the same whenever any top-10 team plays any underdog. This time, Neal Brown ate BV’s lunch and took the brown bag, poked out two eye holes and a mouth hole and put it on his head. WE WERE 28+ POINT UNDERDOGS!!!! This was a total team victory, from the trainers to the head coach, from the special team players to the starters. And this after losing starting center and an important role player on defense (Dees). CONGRATULATIONS, Red Raiders all.

Best win since Tech upset #1 UT in 2008

I’ve been very critical of Tubbs and his staff as I did not think they put their players in a position to win against both the Aggies and the Widlcats. While I’m a proponent of going for it on 4th down more than Tubbs has previously been willing to, I was still questioning a few of his decisions that prevented putting a few FG’s on the board. But, I guess alls well that ends well.

The Tech win vs. #1 UT in 2008 seemed to be a bigger win becasue it was on national TV. The Tech win vs. Okie St. in 2008 was the most important win as it set us up for the showdown with OU, and a possible BCS championship game.

But the win vs. #3 OU this Saturday should provide Tech with new found confidence. If you can beat OU on the road, then surely ISU, Baylor, UT, Mizzou are winnable, and hopefully the home fiedl advantage will help with the Okie St.

For those who may ask, yes, I did eat crow.

In theory beating #1 on the road is harder than at home

But in 2008 UT came into the game knowing full well that this would be the hardest game on their schedule. And the whole world was watching he two undefeated teams facing off. No way we were going to catch them napping. Oklahoma & the world looked at the 29 point line Saturday & looked the other way. Tech fans were the only people paying attention at first.

Merk, most of us ate crow. I enjoyed every bite!

The impt. thing is that TTU did not drop off the national radar, and I thought I saw that on the horizon. It is wins like you mentioned that put TCU and Boise in good positions to be notable to the media and to help their recruiting and # watchers on TV. Now let’s win the ones we are supposed to, and a few that we aren’t. “Always forward, never back.”

SEC vs. Big 12

Wow, could not believe it. I have been highly critical of the Tuberville era here at Tech. I can say that maybe Tubby is starting to learn how to win, and trying to win here at Tech and Big 12 Football. I was shocked to actually see some similarity of the leach era, with throwing the ball down the field and playing to win, I have hammered that a bunch over the weeks. I was at the Ole Miss Arkansas game over the weekend in Oxford, had to cause my wife went to Ole Miss, sorority thing. After tailgating at the grove, it was interesting to really see the difference in SEC vs Big 12 football.

Saturday night, you should have seen the bar we were at how many people were chearing for Tech, and excited to see our offense, and how exciting the play of football was. I was really glad to see for once in the last year and a half us actually play like when we were so exciting and try to win by throwing the ball down the field. Almost like 2008. Now Tubby, you saw what happens when you play aggresive and really throw the football, I can you props as long as you dont revert back to your old ways! Proud to be from Tech this weekend. Great Job! By the way. Ole Miss still does not like you.

Ironic since back that far the Kennedys were probably starving for potatoes across the sea.

I live in Clinton, MS and actually work for MS State Univ. and my wife went to ole miss….. I do think as most of us know it is different over here and it has taken The South Plains Drifter some time to learn what it takes to win consistantly against very good offensive teams….the whole ole miss thing is also a total mess and deep down I now alot of ole miss folks could be like TTU in consistency!!!!!! I do think this coaching staff has matured for Big 12 play. It’s a whole different animal with the passing game which took some getting used to. I expect we’ll build off this OU win and get better as a team. Look out in 2012 because Tech could really be dangerous!

Agree with everything AZ Raider said

Biggest overlooked aspect of the game was how the O-line played. Even though OU rushed the passer on almost every play Doege had the time to get the ball the the right reciever. The draw plays NB loves so much were actually gashing the defense 1. bcause OU was blitzing but 2. because the zone blocking was amazing. You could see both Crawford and Washington patiently waiting for the hole to develop and both of them had great games.
Doege looks like Drew Brees, throws like Drew Brees, carries himself like Drew Brees
Cant say enough about Torres, CornDog, Ward, Kennard, and even Swindall. Have been waiting 4 years for Swindall to make a play like that.
DJ Johnson has been night and day to a few years ago. He is a turnover machine. He’s a saftey right? and not a corner still? His game seems to be catered to being a joker type player with the freedom to go make plays and not to have to be a coverage guy. Same with Bullit. Hubert was all over the place too, and was talking s*** the whole game. Awesome.

Only complaints – On the fake punt why have a D-lineman as the one who rushes the ball? Sure woulda helped to have someone with a little more speed on that play. On the 4th and goal where we called another draw play I would have kicked a field goal in that instance. We were already up big, and it made sense just to get more points on the board. I think Tubberville still has some in game descision making issues but overall a fantastic gameplan by all coaches involved. They shocked the monkey.

1 other complaint……leaving a walk on (Sawyer Vest) out alone in single coverage. Also another walk on, Neboh, was on Broyles all night and by all accounts did an outstanding job!!!

"Odds are its something simple" - @Coach_Leach

by neosox on Oct 24, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting

Couple of thoughts: simply because a player is a “walk on” does not mean lack of ability. In most cases, it simply means overlooked, developed late, etc. i.e. As early as these kids are being recruited and committing, lots of kids get overlooked that don’t get a lot of playing time in high school until they are a junior or senior (especially if they are a senior). Neboh is a great example. He has a brother that was also at “walk on” at UTEP and earned a scholarship. He has another brother that is a senior this year at a new high school. He plans on “walking on” at Tech because his brother is there and it would not surprise me if he makes it. Believe me, they are great athletes and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that 2 of the brothers have “earned” scholarships.

Also, TTUMAR is not a troll. He has been posting on DTN as long as I have been looking at this site which has been over 2 years. Not saying I agree or disagree with the post you are referencing, simply making a point.

thats what it was referred to numerous times within the comments section of said post. Chill out.

Also, was simply questioning why Vest was out on an island by himself on that play. And I believe I was pumping up Neboh not bringing him down……

Finally Tubs shows faith in his offense

I too think this was a great win for Tubs and Tech, but for me it seemed to not only show our young players they can win big games in the Big12 with this offense and personnel, I think it finally convinced Tubs this offense can win in the Big12. I’ve contended that my feeling about our offense until now was that Tubs didn’t trust it (and Brown) in crucial situations, at which times he overruled the OC in favor of more “conservative” playcalling—and it cost us. I’ve felt that until now the only game in which Brown had free rein was at New Mexico—my reasoning then being Tubs had no worry about losing so he let Brown play. Look at the result. Seth’s remark above is, I think accurate about Tubs’ conservatism and confidence—“I think Tubs will go for it when he doesn’t have anything to lose” . I think we saw him loosen up and let Brown do his job again—once he saw it was actually working he finally got involved positively. Did you notice him on the sidelines; he was stalking, yelling, emotional, involved with the game. Last few games he’s looked like he was waiting for a bus, or was stood up by a date I think this game is a turning point for a young Tech team, but I think it may be a bigger turning point for a coach who may finally have figured out how to play Big12 football. Or maybe it was the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Great write-up

I am so proud of our team. They did a great job on Saturday and gave themselves and Tech Nation a shot in the arm.

The team needs to stay focused and play all of the rest of the games with as much enthusiasm and skill as they showed Saturday night.

One of my sisters (also a Tech alum), lives in Scottsdale, AZ and was visiting her son in Tucson (UA) and they were listening to radio on the way back home. My bother-in-law is a baseball fanatic so they were listening to the World Series. Then they found a station that had football on it. She said they turned the radio up and listened intently all the way home when they realized it was the Tech-OU game. She ran into her home with 5 minutes left in the game and was able to watch the rest of the game.

BTW: I read that "Walmart ut" fan’s comments and I am thankful for the gentlemen on DTN that put him in his place.

Have to share this...

Background information: I am a hospital administrator in a small town in Oklahoma. I finished my BBA at Tech in 04 and my MHA at a different school in 06 and am taking the more old fashioned approach and working my way up through small hospitals first before leaping to the big boys. I am an avid Red Raider and wear Tech gear nearly everyday. The staff decided to throw a tailgate party last Friday to celebrate the rivalry between OU & Tech (newsflash to me…I didn’t know there was a rivalry but I digress). On the posted signs all over the hospital for the tailgate party there is a note at the bottom of the sign that reads "Please bring Kleenex for “my name” to use the next day during the game." During the party every staff member and their spouse, kids, grandparents, dogs, cats, mice, pet hamsters, just about every living breathing person in this town came by to say hello and how much they were going to enjoy beating Tech. My only solace was to play the Tech Fight Song in my front shirt pocket through my iPhone during the party.

Update: After beating the ever living s*** out of ou I came to work today with a huge smile on my face and the need to even the score a little with many many different people. Step 1: Mandatory staff meeting at 7am this morning. All staff was welcomed to the meeting room with my iHome in the corner of the room blaring the Tech fight song and me clapping and throwing guns up when necessary. All nurses were wearing their OU scrubs…their responses were priceless…nearly brought tears to two of them. Step 2: Made my morning staff rounds this morning with my phone playing said fight song in my front pocket all morning. Every question that was asked to me had one response from me “41-38 was the final score.” Step 3: Hospital wide PA system…yep. Found the front receptionist away from the PA system for 10 seconds and jumped at the opportunity. This Oklahoma hospital had the Tech fight song blaring for it’s entirety one time through. Patient rooms, ER, Hallways, Bathrooms, Radiology, Clinic, everywhere. You name it they had a forced session of our fight song this morning.

Wreck em!! This was so big!!!!

These players, this coaching staff, this fanbase

needed this one badly. What a unifying moment. Bigger than UT ‘08 in my opinion due to: Tech’s (non)ranking, road win, OU’s streak.

As if the huge Tech win was not enough, seeing my beloved Cardinals open up a can on the Rangers made it a truly awesome night. (I understand that this is a minority viewpoint on this site. Plus, the WS is far from over.)

Gentlemen (team and staff), you have had time to revel in the glory of a huge win and national recognition. Now do what good teams do. Turn your focus to preparing for and executing against Iowa State. Bring home a decisive, home conference win.

Texas has been good to us. But anyone who has really old relatives prolly has Cardinal fans in the family. It was the furthest West team in the bigs for many years. by RndRckTTU on Oct 24, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

THE RESULT | SHOCKING |

That word works and is probably a consensus choice. After looking back, I think the game is more gratifying than a shock. Over-all we did not play all that badly against either Fish Bait or KSU, the OU game confirms that in my eye. This game is currently looking like part of the continuum, improvement over the course of the season. We look to be learning pretty fast this season, especially on defense.

CALLING THE DEFENSE

I think the biggest improvement this season has been linebacker play. Danny Cobb gets my game ball. I know that part of his success is from the good work of the DL and the DL coaching decisions on personnel. Statistically, and we can agree that is not all that matters in a good game result, the DL did not show much, but someone was pressuring Landry. We got hurt a little bit in the secondary also, OU has a great passing game, it is to be expected and it shows that we can overcome something like that.

CALLING THE OFFENSE

The team showed the result of a well executed philosophy of playing team football. What ever the scheme, this is what I like to see. We had a lot of players making things happen for a ball carrier, lots of downfield blocking and making room for a ball carrier. One might ask where has that draw play been all year, I kind of like seeing it new for OU, it made an impact beyond the yards gained. The screens are always fun when they work, sometimes they did not and that gets frustrating, coach hung in there and called it anyway exhibiting faith in both the play and the players, it paid dividends.

TRUST YOUR BENCH

Poor Sawyer Vest is never going to hear the end of that play…I replayed it a couple of times because he looked so far out of position. I want to think that he saw the ball coming and had a shot at an INT, but he lost it in the lights or something like that—for a second though he looked as if he was drawing a bead on an INT. Porter and Bullit both had good games.

OFFENSIVE STARS

It does start with the qb in a passing offense and Doege demonstrated his ability with getting the ball to 12 receivers, the top 4 gainers had 75 + yards, top 4 receptions where 4 +. That is what made our Air Raid successful over 10 years and it still works today.

GOING FOR IT

I like going for it ! I like getting more than not getting it when we go for it. It takes guts to make one of those calls and more guts after some of them leave the team looking foolish, but everyone of them have impact on our players. I like the confidence displayed by a coach who gives this kind of opportunity to his offensive team. Here we are mid season and every team that we will see the remainder of this year, and going into next year has to think about this aspect of our coaching staff’s audacity. It is a good thing !!

I continue to think that Corona is one of the most improved players on this team, his career at TTU started horribly. He has corrected his errors and is kicking the placements with authority and accuracy…an asset.

Gallington and Doege

I seem to remember a bunch of folks ragging Gallington for the bad snaps. I’m happy to see folks coming round and giving him credit for taking an extremely difficult situation and not make a huge mess.
Think about it – this is a guy who has one thing to do – wait for the snap and block his guy. Now, he has to not only block his guy, but hike that ball back to the QB.
I am SO impressed that there wasn’t a single fumber on the snap. Several hit the ground, a bunch more came so very close, but Doege recovered every time and Gallington had it figured out by the 4th quarter. Hats off to the entire team. I didn’t think they could pull it off, but like several others, I was in the lovely position of bragging on my team in the presence of OU, TU and eATMe fans at the office this am.

Excellent writeup, Seth.

I am late responding here. I was out of town Sunday and Monday, unable to get to the internet. I agree that Gallington, though nervous & inexperienced at center, gave it his best, making the necessary adjustments as the game moved forward. Keown looked antsy on the sidelines, but I imagine he gave Gallington all the encouragement he could want, while Doege continuously worked with him when on the sidelines. Doege certainly deserves a huge amount of credit for his poise, toughness, decision making & leadership. He just made everything work. I have though well of him for three years now and just knew he would be a good leader for the Red Raiders. I was wrong. He is a GREAT! leader for Tech. DSo not doubt this guy, He will take this team to wins from here on out if they just buy in to him and follow him all the way. GO TECH!

Other thougts

I’m sure you noticed, and you obviously couldn’t get to everything, but Delvon Simmons played a lot of good minutes down the stretch. I think for a few consecutive plays the line was Mackey, Simmons, Richards and Bush. All will be back next year and I can’t wait for continuous plays in the backfield.

Secondly, I really hope Washington takes this running back gig and goes with it. He runs low like Johnny Mack except he’s an actual running back and not a track star. He’s also stout enough to stick his nose in there and run between the tackles. fight for extra yards.

Also, I was just curious, what do you think Sam E and Dees playing time is going to be next weekend. Cobb and Hubert played pretty much the entire games as I can think of very few times Tech got out of their base 4-2-5 defense. I know they are kind of banged up but I’m wondering if Glasgow even has confidence to put them in during big spots or for a series at a time to give Cobb and Hubert some rest.

Lastly, next year is going to be fun for the outside receivers. With Torres, Moore and Kennard (too bad they will all be seniors) its about as good of a log jam as one could have. Dom Wheeler will have no one better to learn than from Torres and Moore.
