Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

My viewpoint from Sec 36 Row 70 Seat 14

I watched the Texas Tech Red Raider football team including coaches, learn how to win. It's what I personally think this very young team hadn't really figured out how to do. During our walk to Memorial Stadium, after parking the car, we were mostly ignored as we made our way through kids tossing footballs, families tailgating, rowdy fans getting ready for what was supposed to be home win #40. Occasionally we heard a "Tech sucks" from your typical khaki shorts, OU pullover (some even with popped collar), topsider wearing frat boy. We finally make it inside the stadium, to our seats, and we know we are definitely the minority, the enemy.

Then the lightening starts, and over the speaker we hear, "Due to inclement weather, we ask all fans to take cover until the weather passes. The game has been postponed until 8:15 pending weather." So after climbing to Row 70, down we go to wait it out. Then the rain comes, and the lightening, and more rain. Finally at 8:30 we make our way back, to Row 70, to get this beatdown started, this ass whooping as the OU frat boys like to call it.

Finally, kickoff! Our small group of fans stand, Guns Up, as the game starts. Boom! What the heck? Did we just score?! We did!! We watched as Seth Doege led his offense, like a leader should. We watched Torres, Swindall and Ward make catches that seemed impossible and catches made by those who should have been making catches all along. We watched Crawford and Washington find yards when there weren't any. We watched the O-line block and players play out of position. We watched Smith, Cobb, Porter and the defense as a whole make play after play after play. We watched McRoy do his thing, and Corona do what he needs to every game and special teams make the plays. We joined in as "RAIDER" "POWER" overtook "boomer sooner". Most importantly, in my opinion, we watch Coach Tuberville be the coach we needed, Neal Brown be the offensive coordinator we knew who he could be and Chad Glasgow be the defensive coordinator we want. We watched the Red Raiders hand the Oklahoma Sooners their third home loss in the Stoops era of OU football, breaking the home win streak! We watched as the players, drawn to their fans, celebrated this win. We cheered, we sang, we relished this win. This was Texas Tech football.

On our way back to the car, we walked through and eerily quiet OU campus. I have heard that deafening silence in Lubbock before. It wasn't long before the silence was broken and we encountered the aforementioned group of frat boys, mind you not the exact same ones, but the mentality was there. We, in our scarlet and black attire, they in their same khaki shorts, popped collar, topsiders and red solo cup. One looked as us as they approached as said "Who are you?" My response, "We're Texas Tech football!! And who are you?"

So, I would like you thank my daughter and Austin, Tx for being born on that glorious day, TotalDef for the positive karma, all posters on DTN who are great Red Raider fans, but mostly I want to thank this team who never gave up and showed us WHY we love Texas Tech football. Congratulations to the team and coaches. You guys deserved this win. This day was one of my all-time favorite memories!

Nice post, MatadorProud - Hat tip!

I watched the game until after 1AM Eastern time. I was calm for some reason, instead of the mad dog jumping up and down on the couch screaming at the referees and asking why our players can’t tackle, why we are jinxed, why the referees are against us, why the “____” (fill in the blank from: BCS, ESPN, ABC, FOX, any other TV revenue-making entity) conspiracy wanted to be sure that the top-10 team won out and controlled the officials to make it happen," etc. You know, the hidden evil conspiracy forces controlled by evil spirits. But this game I was calm, and JUST FLAT IMPRESSED. It was obvious that a few of our players could not even get significant playing time for OU or most top-25 teams. But it was also obvious that our beloved Red Raiders had faith in themselves and believed they could win. they did not panic, they did not get phased into making stupid mistakes by the crowd or the pressure. THEY LOOKED GOOD for four full quarters. Great job, players and coaches. I wish the whole nation could have seen it. Thanks for the memory, guys.

It's weird

but that same calm played out at the game also. The team was calm and poised as were most of the fans. It was a great night. Watching OU faithful leave and not come back after halftime and the exodus during the 4th quarter…priceless! Thanks for the hat-tip ;)

Once TTU got up at half....

I knew that ou would make their run but even as close as it seemed to get I never doubted TTU would win…..This is the TEAM I have been waiting to see really since 2008….Congrats to all in the RED RAIDER Football Program and keep it going…. Scotty is FREE….Wreck’Em Tech

Local sports radio is really hammering their fans for leaving early; the Sooner diehards simply rolled over and died.

ABC showed the empty stands a lot in the 4th Quarter. The camera crew really rubbed it in with 7 minutes left in the game, if I remember correctly. There was still plenty of time for an OU comeback. That is when I got nervous. We traded touchdowns and got the onside kick. Game over.

Camera crew showed a lot of proud Daddy Doege. Congrats big Doege.

Play like you have nothing to lose.

Let’s keep rolling, Red Raiders. Live week to week!

Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it

We saw the same at the 2008 and 2010 games, very UTish- dry cleaned khaki shorts and nose held high. Great all around game, another season Wrecked!

Wonderful post, thank you for sharing

Sounds like it was a once in a lifetime experience – may have been – pretty rare to win in Norman. So glad you stood up to those jerks who confronted you.

And thank you for the nice words about my birthday. I’ll bet it was a special one for your daughter too!

I have a few grammatical errors

after reading again. oops! The adrenaline and not going to sleep until 4am Sunday morning has kicked this old lady’s butt. It was a great present really for all of us!

Nice!!

Makes me think of all the John Hughes movies in the 80’s where all the “cool” guys wore their collars like that…

Yes, 1980’s.

cool guys?

Those were the villains! See, this is why John Cusack was never able to find true love, women always go for the bad guy

True

I was thinking of Andrew McCarthy in “Pretty in Pink” & how he changed into a good guy by the end of the movie to be with Molly Ringwald.

Molly Ringwald – seriously? Guys, what was it about her?

Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles is the cutest thing in the history of film

OK, Sandra Dee in Gidget gives her a run for her money, but Sandra Dee never got the line, “I can’t believe my grandmother felt me up”.

Cute & Hot are two very different things

Audrey Hepburn does fall on the cute side. Rita Hayworth was hot. Meg Ryan was cute. Kim Bassinger was hot. Selena Gomez is cute. Olivia Wilde is hot.

Audrey Hepburn is just adorable in Sabrina, great old movie to go back and watch. Gilda was pretty racy for it’s time. Needless to say, I watch movies made before I was born.

dang

you called me on that one. good point, if i had the hots for her in real life. but of course i’m mainly referring to the “movie” Molly. I find her beautiful in the same way i find Doris Day beautiful, or other famous actresses from yesteryear. Frozen in time, in their beauty, in those films

Fair enough.

But my rebuttal is this. Johnny Depp? Seriously? I’ll never understand.

Johnny Depp never did it for me

Embarrassingly, my big “celebrity” crush in the ’80’s was Mike Reno, the lead singer of Loverboy. I even bought black parachute pants & a red cut off midriff tee w/ “Loverboy” airbrushed across the front to wear to one of their concerts. Yep.

Thanks for the reminder! MatadorProud

With over three minutes left and their team capable of tying the game and sending it to overtime, half the stands (or more) were EEEEEEEMMMMMMMPPTYYYY!! You would NEVER see that in Blacksburg or Lubbock! if the game had even a 1% chance of being winnable. Remember the Nevada game, and so so many during Mike’s tenure. Anyone who left earl;y at any of his games just did not have the right stuff as a fan. They gave up on their team. Embarrassing. Even if we never win another game, I hope our fans stay to the very end. We did at the Gator Bowl against UVA and it was sooooooo swwweeeeeeetttt!

Great post

Thanks for the post and the experience from inside the stadium. I was so fired up after the game that I couldn’t sleep. What a win. Not a stretch to call it the best win in Tech football history.

Liked the Post

and the insight to what it was like in the stadium up in Norman.

It was hard to go to sleep that night. Too much adrenaline from jumping around and yelling at the TV. The yells were encouraging yells and demands to stay focused and to hold OU. Which we did.

Here is to W’s the rest of this season!!!!

Bands

Was our band there ? Since it was OU homecoming did they stay home?

Or is that just ABC running the mic right down there in front of the sooner band and those same tired notes they play over and over?

Still not as bad as that bama game, some cheerleader dude took his megaphone and camped on the ESPN mic it was horrible

Nope, no band

and the sooner band played those same tired notes to naseum. Another Red Raider fan said the Goin’ Band is now the Stay at Home Band from Raiderland, doesn’t think they travel to away games. I think that’s a shame, I would think a slimmed down version could go. I have to admit though, singing the Matador Song along with the players on the field was sweet sweet music!
