Texas Tech Football | Monday's Presser
I don't have much time this morning, so I'm just posting some selected quotes from yesterday's press conference. You can find the transcript to the press conference here (PDF) and would encourage you to read the whole thing as there are definitely some interesting comments. As far as today's assignment is concerned, would love for you all to pull your favorite or most interesting quotes from yesterday's press conference and post them in the comments.
Head coach Tommy Tuberville on the win:
We made a lot of strides. Proud of the team. The effort was just phenomenal, but it's been that way all year long. The great thing about this game is we went on the road. We played great defense early, and the offense took advantage early, and we scored points. That's what you have to do when you go on the road.
Tuberville's players of the game and week:
Special teams player was Donnie Carona, 5 for 5 and a couple of field goals. Defensive player of the game whose birthday was also yesterday, we congratulated him for that. And probably one of the most improved guys I've seen, Daniel Cobb was all over the field making plays. He gives us a little more athletic ability in terms of playing teams that run the short passing game. Of course, offensive player of the game, everybody's offensive player of the game nationally and in our conference, Seth Doege, who you can't say enough about him. Just watching him play, he gets better and better.
Tuberville on the injury update:
We were excited about being back and going. Injury-wise, Darrin Moore just couldn't go 100%. That is the reason he didn't get much playing time. Blake Dees should be back. Donald Langley should be back, but we'll have to wait. There's no way to predict how well ankles or knees are going to get in a short period of time. We'll go back to work tomorrow and get ready for the Cyclones.
More after the jump.
Tuberville on winning and building a program:
But we know how to win a few games, and we know how to build a program, so we're doing it slowly. We're not even close to being where we want to be. We'll get better as we go. We'll be better next year. Most these kids are back. But we'll talk about the present this week coming up. We've got Iowa State, and we want to play better this week than we played last week, and we need everybody on board on the same page, win, lose or draw. We're going to have some ups and downs.
Tuberville on OC Neal Brown calling the game:
So it all goes into a plan of how Neal Brown and his coaches worked the game plan. I thought we were going to throw it deep and, but we knew we were going to have to take our shots and receivers got open. Seth put it in there, and we got good protection. Then you've got to make the catch. It was a thing of beauty.
Tuberville on LB Daniel Cobb learning that it's about physical talent and doing the little things to get better:
There are a lot of little things. You just don't go out there with ability and run the ball. You've got to understand splits and wide receivers, he's starting to learn a little bit of that. But when you're young like these guys, you don't have to put in as much time. When you don't, you don't play. There have been games that he's played very little. He might have the most athletic ability of any linebacker we've got. He's not going to go out there. Unless he knows what to do, I'm not going to play him. It's just a learning experience for all of them, and it's got to be a lot of film study and learning what to do. Got to buy into what we're doing. You get that feeling that they had after the game the other night, they'll make you want to work a little bit harder to regain that feeling that you had about -- what was it, about 12:30, 1:00 o'clock Sunday morning.
On winning a big game at Oklahoma and getting ready for Iowa St.:
We can talk about it. It's got to be engrained, players have to understand it. They've got to understand themselves of what they're getting into. Because now they've moved to a level where this team's coming in saying we've got to play perfect to beat a team that just beat one of the top ranked teams in the country. As coaches, we just want to get them prepared, get them in the same routine that we're in, and hopefully they get that focus, because it's about players really getting other players focused. Coaches can't do it. We'll talk our head off about it, but one thing I want our players to do is understand themselves, because in the future they're going to have to keep doing the same thing. So the more they do it within themselves, the better football team we're going to have in the next few years, and hopefully that will become an every-week occurrence of winning games. When you win, it will be a big deal, but not as big a surprise. We now have taken another step forward in our learning process, and hopefully we can learn from it and make ourselves better.

First thought...
whoever transcribed this interview needs to learn the difference between Ohio State and Iowa State. Confused me for a minute, I was trying to remember playing Ohio State!
Only had a chance to read the interview with Doege and Torres, but...
I find it interesting that it is Adam James giving the half time rally speech. The team seems to understand that he has gone through a lot and is coming out on the other side making plays and really contributing.
I’m still not a fan of his necessarily, but he has shown a lot of guts. And, he had a big game on Saturday.
Not sure about #82 motives
He knows he would have never played on a D1 team if ML had not given him a shot.
I just have to wonder if it is still all about #82 and his last chance to have a shot at the NFL.
Personally, I don"t think he has a snowballs chance in Hell!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude is like 26
So yah I bet the 18-22 yr olds listen to him. He had a good game no doubt. Lets see how the rest of the yr turns out. He never had a shot at the NFL. His old man is stil a POS that I don’t want associated with TTU.
I've been waiting all my life to type this:

Time to focus on ISU, Tubs
..Like a great coach Quarterback who played here once said…“This was a big win, but it wont mean anything if we lose next week..”
"I just saw they left RoJo one on one in the corner, and, with a guy like that..uh, you just cant do that. It's nice to make 85,000 people shut up." -Graham Harrell after the 2006 A&M-Tech game at Kyle Field
Isn't that pretty much what he said?
"Again, once you employ childish language..(even when camouflaged behind parentheses)….the balance of your post is easily ignored. At that point, the impression is you are more interested in hurling invective than seriously contributing to the discourse." - ForestFlyer
I'm not being critical..
Just thought it was a great time to quote Graham Harrell?

You think GH really kept wine around his place?
He strikes me as more of a Wild Turkey drinker. Being from Ennis and all.
Realllly???
I’m thinking Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill or Tickle Pink, much as I love him…

Ladies and gentlemen....
This photo is real. I couldn’t stand Graham until I got to Tech and only saw him playing football and winning. I just remember his throwing a fit one night because there wasnt any….. coors light I think is what he wanted.
I had to post this picture
After reading one of the posts above about a scenario with him hitting on a freshman this picture is the first thing that popped into my head. As a female, can’t say this would work for me…
But I am a Graham fan, don’t know anything about him personally.

Doege interview
Late last night, Seth was interviewed on he Palmer and Pollack gig on ESPN. Good stuff! Very proud of this young man and all of his accomplishments in such a short time. Seth gave all the credit to his teammates, and is very focused on beating ISU.

I said this about the OU game
if we can get the running game going yes. But we have to stop the WR screen and start throwing down field. every year we play OU they set back in zone coverage and try to force everything to be in front of them. this causes lots of tipped passed and INT’s. the way you beat that is sending people down the field in the middle and outside. hope that happens.
I think I saw maybe 1 WR screen….besides three jailbreak screens. and the rest of the throws were down field in the middle and outside….glad someone saw that too. :)

Ward hasn’t been hurt either…
But I think they have their own skillsets that set them apart in different ways. In all honesty when their both 100% healthy I’d rate them equal. Moore showed what he can do the first few games. Ward has shown what he can do every since and stepping up. Both would be amazing to have on the field at the same time!
Not sure how to compare
But I will say Eric Ward is just a great football player. Take receiver out of the equation. We’ve seen the guy do so many different things the past few weeks. He’s ALWAYs downfield blocking when he doesn’t get the ball. I’m very impressed with him.

Moore is more gifted physically…..ward works as hard as anyone we have seen.
I was trying to figure out…what school has the 2nd best receiving corp? I can’t imagine too much argument about us having the best. Clempsum has one freaky one…

Torres and Leach Interview was a classic.
I am on the road so limited access to DTN until Thursday, I know everyone misses me.
At any rate, after the game Saturday night Leach interviewed Mr. El Paso, Leach was more excited about the Tech win than even Torres was. Leach talked about Torres journey to Tech, his giant hands (which we learned that only number 22 Amaro has hands as big), how Torres owns OU, and then Torres was so humble in victory it made me so proud to be a Red Raider.
I know we have some real pros on this site, but if someone can get it and post it, really worth listening too. Will make us all feel better.
I felt that Leach was so happy for Torress and team that mabye some healing took place.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
All I could find was a piece of it, about a minute long. I would love to hear it as well.

Not done reading the press conference quotes
But I did read Kirk Bohl’s column on Monday
“Nine things and one crazy prediction”
Bohls had the Tech-OU game on his mind when he wrote it
“1. He’s a bigger long-shot than Albert Pujols, who hits more long shots than anyone, but isn’t it time to start up the Seth Doege Heisman Trophy campaign? Looking for a Chicks Dig Doege bumper sticker in my mailbox any day now. Or a Get Along Little Doege cowboy hat, even if it is pronounced Day-ge with a hard g.”
I like this idea (Heisman Trphy) and hope Doege continues to get great numbers and percentages in each and every game.
Bohls also had this in his column:
“I wrote recently that no one fears Texas Tech. I was wrong. Bob Stoops does.”
I am hoping Mack Brown and Gundy and the rest of the Big12 coaches always fear Tech.

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
That #4 about Mack Brown complaining about the LHN makes me laugh.
UT/Kansas will be seen by no one.
And more woes for Mack's LHN
I opened up my Houston Chronicle this morn and there’s a big story on “UT’s QB battle far from over: This week’s starter to be determined by ‘practice mojo.’” And right above it is this weekend’s TV football viewing schedule with Kansas v Texas on LHN at 6pm, next to Iowa State v Tech on Fox Southwest at 6pm. If you could even find the LHN in Houston, after Tech’s OU upset, which game would you (and most Longhorns) want to watch? $$$$?
I hear
That Direct TV might be dropping all of the FOX networks.

They may think they can get away with that because they lock people into contracts, but they will die for it
if they try that. Lots of folks who live in the city ONLY have DTV because they offer Sunday ticket which means they are huge football fans and won’t stand for losing their regional fox network.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
bingo..
I’ll drop them in a new York minute…and have told them.

Dish did it last year
and eventually got it negotiated out, but no fox sports during that time. I did have FX
i like lose women
Our FX game of the week is on FX Nov 5 vs TX aftter the deadline
Sons of Anarchy
Sunny
American Horror
The League
all great shows that rival HBO style programing in quality and “adultness” so maybe FX is making a move

I love how the horns whine about everything
I found that interesting. That the Mack Brown is complaining and yet every time I hear an interview and listen to the ATX sport radio stations they have the DJs asking people to get the LHN. If it was actually being viewed and used would any of the ut coaches have the time to actual coach?? They are the ones that wanted this. The followers of DeLoss Dodds will have to suffer the consequences.

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
my favorite laugh out loud moment recently
Was listening to Matt Mullen not do subtly pimp the LHN during the evil empire’s UT/OSU broadcast. “I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE HOW AVAILABLE MACK MAKES HIMSELF FOR THEIR PROGRAMMING, HELL IF YOU CALL AND ORDER THE LHN NOW MACK’LL THROW IN A SHIATSU RUBDOWN AND A DENVER OMELETTE”

These are the quotes that I think are important going into this week’s game
Doege talking about Iowa State:
"I think they’re pretty similar to like Kansas State. They’re very sound in what they do. They don’t do a whole lot, but what they do, they’re really good at. It’s one of those games where the margin of error is very small. We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot because they’ll take advantage of it."
Torres talking about Doege:
"Letting him down is probably one of the most disappointing things I can do, because I know he’s not going to do that for me. I know that’s rubbed off on so many of our players and it just keeps spreading. We’re not going to let each other down, and it’s become personal. We’re not going to let our guys down. It’s been huge for us."
.
NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
Torres' comments
When it becomes personal and guys start talking about not wanting to let their teammates down or disappoint them, that is a fantastic sign of a GREAT team.
I’m so encouraged by the character and determination of this team.
