DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-10-26

I keep waiting for life to slow down a bit. Everything with Fitsum is great, he's doing really well and he likes to eat. A lot. As to other things, my father-in-law was watching my other two dogs (as you may recall, our third dog passed away when we got back from Ethiopia) and our blue-heeler/husky mutt (Blue) tore into terrier mutt (Zoey) and dislocated her hip, which required surgery yesterday. Zoey is at home and doing well, but Blue is still at my father-in-law's house. Zoey didn't provoke the attack, she's a sweet-natured dog, but I am wondering if anyone knows anyone that might be able to help. I want Blue to be a part of our family, but this aggression isn't something that I can have at the house with a new kid and a wife at home trying to separate two dogs. If anyone knows anyone in the DFW area that could maybe help, I'd appreciate an email (doubletnation AT gmail DOT com). I was told by one dog trainer that this may be a dominance issue, as they are both females, and may not be able to be trained out of her, but would love any other opinions.
ODDS AND ENDS
Million-dollar bust - The Daily Toreador: News and Alumni association ignored warnings from Red Raider Club, president says - The Daily Toreador: News
Interesting. Some good reporting from the student newspaper has done some pretty good investigative work. I won't try to summarize, but here's a summary:
Currently, the lease agreement requires Tech and the alumni association to pay $750,000 a year to lease 1,000 parking spaces and 18 RV spaces, which are used by Tech students during the week and attendees at Red Raider football games on the weekends. Only about one-third of the spaces have been leased.
The university and the alumni association have lost $440,000 since the deal was signed in December of 2009. They will likely lose an additional $760,000 in the next several years.
The lack of demand, the pricing of parking spots and other shortcomings cited by students — such as location — have resulted in two-thirds of the parking garage not being filled.
TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL
Gillispie welcomes fans to Basketball with Billy - The Daily Toreador: Sports and Fans take opportunity to meet Gillispie, Red Raiders | Red Raiders
From the DT:
"(Gillispie’s) work ethic is unmatched," Hocutt said. "His care, his love and his dedication to the young men he is working with every day is second to no other head coach I’ve ever been around. He’s a proven leader and he wants to be at Texas Tech University."
And from the LAJ:
"We have 10 new guys here," Gillispie said. "They couldn’t care less about trying to win next year. We’re trying to win this year. You won’t hear me make any excuses. We’re going to try to win every game we play starting right now."
Gillispie invited fans at the event to attend any of Tech’s practices this season, and he offered a prediction sure to excite a fan base.
"This is not a show," the coach said. "This is what we do. I guarantee you nobody’s going to play harder. I don’t know when it’s going to be, but we’re going to have some banners in here before it’s all said and done."

Notebook: Tuberville talks Iowa State, injury update - The Daily Toreador: Sports and Red Raiders Football Notebook: Tech might seek waiver for Robertson | Red Raiders
A few things here. LB Pete Robertson (he was a safety initially) has a shoulder injury that has kept him out of the last four games and may seek a medical hardship for this year rather than waste his redshirt year. RT Mickey Okafor is going to play this week, as Terry McDaniel filled in for him last week. C Justin Keown won't practice until maybe Thursday, but still hopes to play this week, although Deveric Gallington will most likely still see snaps at center as well. LB Blake Dees, DT Donald Langley and WR Darrin Moore all practiced yesterday. Finally, Tuberville talked a bit about LB Zach Winbush, from the LAJ:
"We’ve got to get him more experience," Tuberville said. "He’s too good an athlete. He’s probably light enough, he should be playing safety, but he’s going to be big enough in the future to play linebacker, so that’s where we’ve got him."
And from the DT, head coach Tommy Tuberville says that the team must focus on Iowa St.:
"We’ve got to get our heads out of the clouds," he said, "and get our minds on what we’re getting ready to face. We’re facing a hungry team."

Texas Tech players from Oklahoma like beating Oklahoma.
CFI: West Virginia not Tuberville's first choice - Dallas Colleges Blog - ESPN Dallas
Comments from Tuberville about West Virginia not being his first choice to add to the Big 12 and apparently he was asked his opinion from the athletic department:
"I don’t know. The jury’s going to still be out on that. It’s hard to get to West Virginia. Man, I don’t know whether these people realize … because you’ve got to go to Pittsburgh and then you’ve got an hour and a half ride to Morgantown. It’s a great place. It’s just an excellent college town and they play very good football. I’ve coached many games there. It’s a heck of an atmosphere. "
"The travel for basketball, baseball, everybody involved is a little different. I thought it would be Louisville. I thought they would be a better fit for the situation for the Big 12. West Virginia’s going to be great. It’s just the distance and travel is going to be different for everybody and just being able to get there and for fans to get in and out. But it’s a great school a lot of tradition …"
"It’s a good fit for football. Whether it fits everybody else, I don’t know."
"(Tech officials) asked me and I told them either one’s fine. It’s just the logistics for football are going to be a lot better because you only have to go one time every two years. "
Superman LSU, Spiderman Stanford lead comic book Power Rankings - Andy Staples - SI.com
I am a comic book nerd, or at least I used to be, and SI.com's Andy Staples ranks his top 25 teams using comic book heroes and villains:
Gambit: In honor of the return of the Riverboat Gambler to the national conversation, Texas Tech gets Gambit, the Cajun X-Man who can charge objects (in his case, usually playing cards) with explosive energy. Coach Tommy Tuberville's Red Raiders certainly looked explosive on offense against Oklahoma, racing to a 31-7 lead by early in the third quarter in Norman. Texas Tech also did what no one else had this season: disrupt Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones. Losses to Texas A&M and Kansas State probably already have eliminated Texas Tech from the Big 12 title race, but a Nov. 12 matchup with Oklahoma State in Lubbock could allow the Red Raiders to muddy the picture a little more.
Last game: Beat Oklahoma, 41-38

Best of Times, Worst of Times: Tommy Tuberville, winning friends and influencing people - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports
Hinton keeps saying that the offense is watered down, I'm not sure what that means. Yes, the offense isn't the passing team that it used to be, but still pretty darned effective and right now, QB Seth Doege has more passing attempts than anyone else in the country. Anyway, here's Hinton:
Tommy Tuberville. Tubs has spent the better part of two years at Texas Tech toiling in the long, unforgettable shadow of his swashbuckling predecessor, much of it based on the simple fact that Tuberville is not, nor ever will be, Mike Leach. He was the guy who watered down the offense that had defined the Raiders to the rest of the country and hadn't won any games worth writing home about. Suddenly, in the span of a few lightning-delayed hours, he's the guy whose offense put the ball in the air 53 times in the upset of the year.

Is DTN getting too big?
I’ve had a helluva time with pages loading and getting kicked off. Sometimes new comments show up, when there aren’t any and sometimes I can’t even get on at all.
Is anyone else having the same issues?

Not sure what the problem is, but since DTN is part of the network, I’m thinking that it may be a network problem. I don’t know if I have much of an answer other than I don’t think it’s just me. There are so many other sites ahead of DTN. At best, DTN is in the top 20 college blogs, but the NFL, MLB and NBA blogs normally have much more traffic (Lone Star Ball is a good example). If you keep having issues, try sending an email to support@sbnation.com and if you don’t get a response, I’ll send an email.

I agree, the website has really been slow lately and certain functions don’t load the first time. I think there are too many ads which ultimately causes the slow performance. Don’t they know we run the NASCAR offense around these parts and are extremely impatient?

Dogs
Growing up in the country I can tell you female dogs are more aggressive. Specially if they have had puppies. But like your friend said, it is not something that can be trained to get it out of her. I could only recommend maybe keeping on indoors and one outdoors, and switch them occasionally. Sorry man doggies are like part of the family…and it hard when they fight.

I cannot make myself trust a dog that has exhibited aggression in any form around a child.

Huskies are sketchy and often
skittish around little kids. Especially once the kid is up and about and can lock eyes with the dog. I’ve had 5 huskies over the last few years and am glad we got rid of the last one before we brought our daughter home. Great dogs, but not always great with kids. Not sure about mixes, but use caution. It only takes a second and in the end it’s just a dog – Fitsum is not. Not worth the potential trouble it can cause if you’re even slightly worried.
It is too late.
the dog was only acting out her role in nature … but, the dye is cast. she can no longer be trusted, even if you could ‘break’ her spirit. Don’t take the chance.
We had a Viszla!! ( a Hungarian retriever ‘bird’ dog). When our oldest could clain her Border Collie again, Zac tried to be dominate with the remaining Chow Mix AND us. He conqured the Chow, but would get agressive with our corrections. We adopted him to the Viszla Foundation -- they evidentially had to put him down because he was then driven to be dominate.

Heelers
Will tend to nip at people they are not familiar with some times. My step-son’s red heeler, which we kept here for about a year, just ignored all the other dogs. Of course, they were all little ones, being chihuahuas. When he nipped the granddaughter, tho, I wanted to beat the whey out of him. We had Robbie come get him and that has not happened again. The granddaughter I mentioned did like to pester the dogs, pulling and pinching them, so Cicero’s nip may have just been a reaction to her aggressiveness. At any rate, he did pass a year ago, so we will not have that concern any more. Usually, this type of stuff happens when stress is in the mix, so maybe it is not something you will see again. it was probably pretty tough on them all when you were gone. As big as heelers are, it might be best if your dog could be placed with another family. It is just hard to do this at times. Best of luck to you all in this matter. it can be tough whichever way you go.

The comments made by the anonymous person in the DT about phi deltas making all the decisions are a little bit behind; Dr. Bill Dean was a Phi Delta member and a sponsor at one point in time. I know he does some great work for the alumni assoc., but I can see his phi delta buddies take advantage of this situation. There were some construction company owners that were phi deltas I wonder if they helped strong arm this project?
The game day pricing year one was a joke
We used to have to donate $1500 a year to the RRC to have the right to buy one parking spot in the east side lot, between the stadium & university. That’s a great tailgating lot because you can leave at halftime & have a beer watching TV & eating leftovers & still get back in to watch the 2nd half. You are paying $1500 for that convenience. The new parking garage was built across the Marsha Sharp Fwy. And to get to it on foot you have to walk 4X as far because of the footbridge ramps & such. There is no way that is practical for tailgating. Plus you’re in a concrete structure w/no trees & no place to setup tents & cookers. And they were asking the same $1500 per year RRC donation per spot for their boondoggle. If you want to park across a major road from the stadium it would be cheaper to book a room at the Overton hotel & tailgate there 5 or 6 home games a year. What were they thinking?
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
I was just looking at that.
Why is a public university involved in a private parking enterprise? They need to get the hell away from that yesterday if not sooner. We know they can backpedal and dump a contract in a matter of minuets. There IS precedent for that as far as I know. (Our lawyer friends can fill us in on the finer details…)
If people want to develop land and take risks and run a buisness like that, it’s fine – But it appears that TTU has made commitments and maybe not all of it with private money or donations.
There’s a bunch of kids protesting an economic engine right now and it occurs to me that they have totally mistaken the correct target.
If these kids went to admin buildings across the land and had an impact on the unjustified costs of education, they might have a much brighter outlook on life without so much of their own personal debt being wasted on beauracracy, bloat, waste and poor value.
You would think they should see the costs spiraling upwards without getting any more for their money, but glitzy causes and playing for the media is more important than tackling real problems.
It’s cronie capitalism and it’s the hallmark of our current political system.

Funny this is the American Way !
But really the university parking srvs and alumni assoc did get taken. Developers are great at shoping Arch Renderings around and getting guys with money excited. They needed to show the guaranteed revenue stream to get financing
….but if your any arm of the school, why get involved ? There is no competition for those spots, there was no need to lock them down for students because they would be available anyway
So it totally reakes of a smoke filled room (not really necessry these days) deal

TTU just got stuck with an entreprenuer’s error.
Somewhere there is impact on tax payer dollars and failure to administer to the good of the tax paying public.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
It's a two way street sometimes.
Cronyism and a good old boys network can be put to use when taxpayers are involved. Often enough, there is a gentleman’s agreement found that saves considerable dollars over using the “other guy” who is not an insider.
It depends entirely on the morality of the people involved, but I suspect 80% of the time we don’t hear about things like that because the arraignment is put to use for good and does not burst into flames spectacularly.
That being said the people I talk to wouldn’t know much about it, so its unlikely I can get any information on it.

A donor to the university, who wished to remain anonymous, said the information presented to the alumni association about how the Red Raider Club allocated parking spaces was ignored by a powerful coalition of members, all of whom belong to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Im not saying Bill Dean is a bad guy, I actually like him I just think it is odd that the guy is spouting off about the Phi Delta Theta fraternity being the ones who call the shots and that Dr. Dean was a member and a former sponsor.
ok
I just remember hearing Hance is a delt, and I didn’t quite figure out how all of the fraternity thing figured in.
I was quoted in the 1986 School paper as a fraternity member after a huge brawl took place. I basically quoted animal house and said that if you are going to color all fraternities with that broad brush stroke then you would have to do it for all students, and if you did that it would be our entire generation which would lead to ….yeah, I’m a deep thinker. There is more parking available now than there was in Dec 09
Also, one day does not make up for the entire year’s costs.
Parking garage
Tech and Alumni got screwed. Even Hance said it was a bad deal.
Original deal:
$750,000 per year for 1000 spots. One spot for $62.50 a month.
Then they lease to there partners at:
$30,000 per year for 500 spots. One spot for $5 a month. WTF?
You have got to love real investigative journalism. I would gladly pay the $1 per day for a group of newspaper watchdog reporters who can keep the schisters off my back.
Dog
Unless its being aggresive over food, protecting something or frightened the only reason for a dog to lash out like that is its trying to establish dominance. Take the dog flip it on its back make sure the tail is not allowed to go between the legs or the snout to go down towards the body, the idea is to have the dog at its most vulnerable and let it know you are alpha hold it in that position until it stays on its own it may struggle so you might have to use some muscle, do this several times before reintroducing the other dog, then do it with the other dog there let ‘em both know who is running the show, I’ll bet 10-1 that the dog that just died was the head honcho now Blue is trying to be the “top dog” you have to show them both that you will take that role. Kinda like we did to OU!

TORO is right
Sounds like a dominance issue. Especially with the recent changes in the “Pack” (death of other dog, Fitsum, et. al.). I have trained lots of hunting and working dogs. It will be up to you to establish, or re-establish your Alpha status. TORO’s techniques is a good one. There are lots of other techniques also. Google and research other options, in case that one doesn’t work as well.

What are the chances of a class action suit by Alumni association donors against the board, Isom et al.? From the limited FOI available so far, this is at the very least serious corruption and possibly fraud/embezzlement if a money trail can be found between some board members and Isom. Subpoenas would go a long way in bringing out what exactly happened.
Also, good job by the DT, you’re doing much better journalism than the AJ has done in a long time.

I work for the gubment
so I don’t do a lot of corporate work. But I have served on a nonprofit board, and my recollection is that any sort of shareholder derivative-type lawsuit in the non-profit context is a lot more complicated than is the case with a more orthodox profit-oriented corporation. Essentially, that’s because of the difference between a donor and a shareholder. A donor is not an owner of an interest in the nonprofit, giving them a more established basis to claim standing (the personal stake necessary to bring a lawsuit).
I would note, however, that the state attorney general has some considerable authority to investigate and take remedial action with regard to mismanagement in the nonprofit setting.

Could easily be desguised as a bad business decision, after all projections are just that projections, proving malace or fraud is tough when thats what gets talked about on the golf course far away from emails and phone conversations, secretaries etc

A bad deal
Potential Scandal
Where this might get sticky is if the correspondence demonstrates that the bank loan was contingent on TTAA’s guarantee of the 1,000 spaces (which it probably was).
Poor Governance
The governance of the organization will certainly be called into question. TTAA is a fiduciary. The developer is the son of one of TTAA’s board members.
30+ board members for an organization with an annual budget of $6 million per year is, well, unusual.
The Deal
The only way TTAA makes money is if 100% of the parking lots are leased at maximum value. Otherwise, TTAA takes the downside risk of paying the annual lease for the unused spaces. Not smart.
Tough lesson learned for Texas Tech.
The Loan
As for the bank, the lender is stuck with an $18-20 million note on an asset that might be worth 20-30% of the preliminary valuation.
The Developer
The developer will likely struggle to meet its loan payments, especially if the principle has yet to be paid, and default.
The Opportunity
tThe asset might be an attractive opportunity for someone looking to buy at a steep (very steep) discount. If you buy cheap, normalize the parking charges to surrounding areas, etc, the deal might make a lot more sense.
That, or tear it down and build more student housing.
The Lesson
I think we’ll see a restructuring of the TTAA (donors will demand this), a few heads may roll, and the organization will move forward.
Real estate 101 – in a place like Lubbock where parking is, well, ample, the need for a multi-storey parking garage charging three times the parking rates of surrounding areas makes absolutely no sense.
Not a huge scandal here. Just bad collective judgment.
I feel bad for Bill Dean. He’s a good man who has done so much for Texas Tech. But remember a 30 plus board members looked at the facts and somehow thought this was a good deal.

Is this the new TTU remade in the image of our Chancellor?
Unfair you say, maybe, but that smell isn’t the stockyards.

I don't think so
Tech got involved to help TTAA manage the downside exposure. By the time that happened, the damage had already been done.
It’s unlikely Hance is at fault here.

From Twitter....
West Virginia’s membership not official, Louisville making a late push. Looks like Conference will remain at 10 team because the money won’t work otherwise.
well
we all better familiarize ourselves with West Virginia.

Louisvill is the best choice;
but WV might fall to their knees to be left out again.
Talk about having bad luck. SEC won’t take them, ACC, and now the Big 12.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Some more Twitter Intrigue....

Hope they go this route. RT @ChuckCarltonDMN: Source suggested Big 12 might consider adding Louisville AND West Virginia to go to 11.

Really? Wow...
Just read on twitter that Tuberville was named as one of the 20 finalists for Bryant coaching award.
Interesting.
Sorry if this is a repeat-on the road today can’t drive, read&post!
