One More A. James Question

I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion of Adam James.  How each of you feel about him and his family is really your business.  Personally, his performance on the field has little to do with shaping my opinion about him as an individual and what I think of him as a human being.  My opinion, my right....However, I don't begrudge any of you for how you feel.  I think we are all on the same page that we want our Red Raiders to do well and that ultimately our love for Tech outweighs any one individual.  So with that in mind, let me pose the following.

I've read many places that within 10 years, 70% of college graduates wind up working in a field completely unrelated to their degree.  So assuming that Adam graduates with his RHIM degree, there is a good chance he may be working (if he has to) in a field completely unrelated to what he studied.  So the question I pose to all of you out there...suppose Adam shows up at your office and you are asked by your boss (or if you are the boss, you get this opportunity directly) to interview and potentially hire him for a position reporting directly to you.  Knowing what you know about what happened while he was "just a kid" and the baggage he has with a certain someone who works out of Bristol, do you hire him?

I assume (maybe incorrectly) that those of you that say to forgive and forget, would have no second thoughts about doing so.  Some of you that vow to hate him forever may actually hire him just for the sake of being able to fire him.  Personally, I wouldn't want to put myself in the position where I ever had to worry about the potential headaches.   Maybe that's not very big of me, but having hired people and in some cases, having to let them go has caused me to realize that with all of the qualified people out there, some baggage is not worth taking on.

Maybe because of Adam's family situation, he never has to work.  But, unfortunately, his previous actions will potentially cause some people to always treat him differently.  But, this is something we all have to learn in our own way.  Whether it is what Adam did two years ago, whether it was some other person getting expelled for cheating or being pulled over for a DUI, or someone else spreading rumors about CRAIG JAMES KILLING FIVE HOOKERS WHILE AT SMU, everyone is ultimately responsible for his/her actions.

Maybe Adam has learned and has grown up.  It will always be a part of his past.  Although, I don't hate him for it (anymore) I wouldn't want to have him working for me.

Seems like you’re encouraging people to just find unique ways to insult him for sport. I know and can appreciate that there’s a ton of passion/venom wrapped around this kid. But the hypothetical question is relevant to absolutely nothing, especially since you’ve made it about something totally and completely unrelated to the team or games.

In many cases, hypothetical questions have a place. I just can’t for the life of me figure out how the question you’ve posted does…

@Tech92,
I have always enjoyed your posts and comments, but am a bit puzzled as to how you took my post to mean that I wanted to encourage insulting Adam. I agree that my post has nothing to do with football. In about three months, the football careers of many of the seniors, including James appear to be over. Then what? He along with many others his age will have to live their post college lives. My hypothetical was simply, given what you know or perceive, would you have him work for you? Maybe I should have asked, are we hypocrites? Do we say forgive but then act otherwise? Employers check out YouTube, Facebook and perform background checks. Why? Because we are always being evaluated based upon our past actions. Is that right? I can’t really say, but it is reality. Personally, I have no problem cheering for him on the field. However, I realize that his success on the field doesn’t mean he is a good or bad person. Isn’t that true for all athletes? I liked Pete Rose as a player, but wow! I thought Chris Davis was a great guy when he was with the Texas Rangers, but wasn’t upset when he was traded. Now, I personally don’t know Adam from Adam (pun intended), and he owes me nothing. The chance that our paths cross are pretty much zero. The chance someone, someday uses his past to evaluate a decision affecting him…pretty good. This is the same for all of us. So, after football is over and his life continues, do you really mean that the past is forgotten? That is the question I asking you to ask yourselves. But to say that I’m encouraging people to insult him…not my intent. Now as far as picking on Daddy James…that’s a different story.

First of all...

I’m horrified that he’s a RHIM major – that is what my degree is in – OSR too I think or his wife maybe (correct me if I’m “misremembering” OSR).

I’ve worked for 23 years since I graduated (yikes that is a painful realization – although I think it’s important to add that I graduated in 3 1/2 years – I feel much better now!) and only a little over 3 of those years were in my field of study. The other 20 have had nothing to do with my major.

Finally, I would recuse myself from any interview process with #82 due to my strong negative opinion based on character issues. However, if the company I worked for was seriously considering hiring him & I would have to work with him regularly I would at that point insert myself in the process & interview him with as open a mind as possible to see if he had grown through life experience.

I think it’s an interesting question you’ve posed.

I travel weekly for work sometimes East Coast, sometimes West Coast, sometimes in between and I find myself telling the whole Leach VS The James Gang story soup to nuts at least weekly. I am always astounded that so many people know so little about something that has meant so much to me and my brethern. I have actually caught myself thinking “Wow! Adam & Craig could walk down the street in this town and nobody would care one way or the other!”
As for me I still remember, now go ahead and make a bunch of yards and score a few TD’s I will cheer for my team, but don’t expect me to swap spit with your sister or shake your hand your not my friend. Yes, I wish it would all go away as soon as possible. I don’t know if this a bad way to think, but I’ve wanted this season to move as quickly as humanly possible for this very reason. I don’t want to write about or acknowledge Adam James any more. I knew that this discussion would continue and I’ve never deleted topics because I didn’t like the subject matter, but I have really wanted to just write about and focus on the field stuff for a long time. I know this is totally selfish and highly unlikely given the state of where things sit.

Without exception, most of us are forming our opinions about Adam James character based upon what we have seen or heard from the news (tv, print, internet), some reliable sources and some not so reliable.

Because I do not know him personally, I have a hard time understanding how I can realistically form an educated opinion about his character based on only the negative words that I’ve heard from 2nd hand sources or the group hate that seems to exist toward him or his father. Most people of this opinion seem to think that because Mike Leach was the most successful coach we’ve had (at least recently), that he was beyond fault and would never do anything wrong. I believe that there are many sides to this story that we will never know that could change our opinions toward any of the characters involved for the good or the bad.

Knowing that, I prefer to look at the people who know Adam best and observe how they have reacted to the situation.

1. The team largely supported their teammate over their coach!
2. Baron Batch, Stephen Sheffield and Alex Torres all stood up and strongly supported him. http://lubbockonline.com/zuvie/2010/01/14/teammates-say-they-support-adam-james
3. Tommy Tuberville must see some football talent or he wouldn’t be on the field.
4.. He didn’t run away from the hate and vitriol that occurred because of the Leach fiasco.

I’m not writing this post to defend Adam James but to defend the idea that this country has of “innocent until proven guilty”. I understand that this is a legal concept applies in court but I truly believe that it should equally apply in the court of public opinion.

We are all certainly entitled to our opinions about everyone involved in this mess. I have mine, you have yours. Sometimes they are the same…..sometimes not. What we all have in common is that we are Red Raiders! Much like marriage…for better or worse, we love Texas Tech University and all that comes with it.

Offensive football anyway. I didn’t realize he was also an expert in “religiosity” (whatever the heck that is).

And I also didn’t realize that his TT contract required he pass judgement on the personal beliefs of the players under his supervision.

When a person in authority attacks someones personal beliefs based on their own opinions and prejudice that’s not integrity that’s bullying.

Part of my interview

Adam, I am a TTU graduate and whether I wanted to or not had to follow your time on the football team. Based on the information I had you appeared to be a child of privilege with an over involved father. My opinion of you was that you did not finish a job, was not a team player and unsupportive of leadership. You allowed your coach to take heat for something he did not do. Bottom line, I had a very low opinion of you. That was 2009, it is now 2015. Tell me why that opinion was wrong and/or how that behavior has changed. What did you learn from that experience? ……….. If he gives me an explanation that everyone was picking on him unjustly and he could have his dad call me to explain, the interview would over and he would not get the job. If he could convince me that was childish behavior, that he has personally apologized to Leach and I would never see evidence of that behavior in my organization, then I would move on to questions about his industry knowledge and experience. ……. Right now I detest Adam and even more so Craig, but people make mistakes. If they learn from them I am quick to forgive. I am not sure Craig will let his son learn. I feel he will teach him to work around it pulling whatever strings that need to be pulled. It is why I do not like/trust Hance.

he gets a job at ESPN. huge corporation, lots of jobs to be had, and he knows people that work there. so you know, good for him, or whatever

You know....

After the next three months, we don’t have to watch him play for us anymore. Until then, if he makes a contribution to the team—great. Let him be useful for once. I’m just gonna ignore him and spend my time on Senior Day eating popcorn. He’ll get PLENTY of boos without me, trust me!
