Livin' the Dream Weekend

My parents tried valiantly but they finally gave up when I was twelve years old.  They separated and were officially divorced a few months later.

My dad moved into an apartment and my mom, my brother and I stayed in our modest home out in the cotton fields. Somehow my mom made it work for a while, but the summer before my freshman year we had to move into a tiny trailer house.  Then about six months later we moved again.  And a few months later we moved again. And then again.

In each successive move, we found ourselves in a smaller space.  By the time I graduated from high school we lived in about 600 square feet, had 3 chihuahuas, paper thin walls and an aluminum roof that whistled in the wind.

None of this phased me though because I had the Texas Rangers and my clock radio.

Star-divide

I can't remember what exactly lured me in. We went to a few games at the old Arlington Stadium when I was a kid and the manicured grass mesmerized me.  The field was in such pristine condition and I was blown away by every facet of the landscape.  Bull Durham was a big movie at the time and I totally bought into Annie's philosophy- "I believe in the church of baseball".  To  a poor kid from New Deal, Texas, Arlington Stadium was the most beautiful place I'd ever seen. Who cares if it was the only major league park I'd ever been to. It was mecca. Arlington Stadium and the Rangers were my escape.

My clock radio could tune into KFYO from anywhere in Texas, which was important. All the home games started at 7:35 (except on Sunday) and I had my radio with me, no matter where we were.  I listened to Mark Holtz night after night after night after night. Watching Martin with the boys?  Yeah, I had my radio on.  Playing wiffle ball with the boys?  I'd plug the radio in outside.  Driving my mom's Accord to try and buy some cigarettes with the boys? The Rangers were on. I loved the Rangers.  (This may also explain why summer nights were always with the boys.  Girls weren't very impressed by my clock radio or the Rangers).

Those formative years flew by.  I graduated from high school, went to Tech, moved away, moved again, and then moved a few more times.  With each move I got further away from those dusty cotton fields and that clock radio.

After a while I wasn't paying any attention to the Rangers.  I was sad when Mark passed away and was amazed at the new Ballpark when it was built, but I was a passive fan at best.

And yes, I'm still passive.  Besides the World Series, I haven't watched a game in years.  I'm not jumping on any band wagon or making a claim to be their biggest fan. I probably can't name four guys on the roster.  It's not like the glory days with Pete Incavilgia, Ruben Sierra and Steve Buechele.  None of these guys could hold a candle to Charlie Hough.  But yet,  I found myself absolutely captivated last night.  Memories flooded.

I texted some of my childhood buddies during the game.

Remember when you had that mullett and we called you "Petey?"  Will you please grow the mullett back in honor of the Rangers?

Remember those times I would frog the shit outta your arm while we were playing RBI Baseball on Nintendo and listening to the Rangers game in my trailer?

Remember how I would kick your ass and make you fix me some cereal?

Remember that time we talked my mom into driving all of us to Arlington to watch the Rangers and A's?  We drove a gold minivan and listened to Bell Biv DeVoe ALL WEEKEND! BEST TIME EVER!

It all came flooding back.

When I was 15 years old I had my walls plastered with Ranger's posters.  Nolan Ryan was my hero.  All my hats were blue and our summer vacations were weekends in Arlington, and I wouldn't change that for the world.

The Rangers were my escape as a young teenager.  Most of us enjoy DTN for the same reason today.  We're all livin' the dream.

I now have a life that I never imagined, and the Texas freakin' Rangers could win the World Series tonight. Tell that to the 15 year old with the clock radio and you would get frogged in the arm, really hard. Then he would make you go fix him some cereal and probably kick you out of his trailer.

It's hard to imagine sometimes, but anything is possible. This is about to happen.

Ok, that's enough dime store novel crap.  Let's get back to the important things!

ES BEISBOL TONIGHT AND FOOTBAW SATURDY ON SATURDY!

Go Rangers!  Go Tech!

Go fix me some cereal!

I remember watching Nolan Ryan play, thats my only memory of the old stadium. I also remember going to watch them in the new ballpark the year it opened and was amazed at it, but my adhd doesn’t really work well with watching baseball, even though I keep up with it.

Maybe I can get a case of beer now, and that might help me sit through a full game

Great Story!

I can remember my great granddad sitting in his garage in Lockney listening to the Rangers in the early 70s when I was a young kid. Man wouldn’t he be proud of them today.

Mitch is my uncle and RN is married to my cousin, Lindi, Mitch's daughter.

Tell them Kenneth says Hi next time you see them.

Small world, isn’t it? Next time we’re in Petersburg or Floydada, we’ll have to meet up at Azteca or something and have lunch.

RN is an amazing guy. Everytime we’re in town, I run around with him and pick his brain. And drink all the beer in the surrounding counties.

Loved that post!

I was a young kid growing up in the Texas Panhandle and I never missed a game. I tuned my tractor to KFYO and listened to every Ranger game I could.

I wasn’t always a Ranger fan. (I have followed Nolan Ryan for as long as I can remember dreaming that one day I would be pitching like he was.) I was an Astros fan until they lost to the Phillies in the playoffs in 1980. I was devastated! I gathered up all of my Astros baseball cards and tore them up. The Astros lost more than a playoff game that night, they lost me…LOL I have been a Rangers fan ever since and we Ranger fans have seen some truly lean years and some heart breaking losses, so a win tonight would be tremendous!

I will have a tear in my eyes no matter the outcome tonight. I was on an airplane flying back from Nashville last night and so I missed the bulk of one of the greatest games in history. When the night ends I hope that the sadness of missing that game last night will be replaced by the joy of seeing my Texas Rangers claiming that World Series trophy!!!

haha, yea that's pretty much how I got into Royals baseball

I could only get AM on the radio of the tractor I grew up driving as a kid here in KS. Baseball’s fine and definitely just a past-time in between football seasons.

Anyway, I’ve grown up and been to enough KC-Cardinals games to hate the ‘Cards. Though it’s not looking too good, know that I was pullin for the Rangers both this yr and last.

I met my wife at a Texas Ranger Baseball game in the old park in 1977.

California Angels. She was in my seat, a long story.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

My Mom's folks lived in Haltom City (trust me it was a bit nicer 35 years ago)

And Grand Dad had season tickets to the Rangers and I I got to leave the boondocks and spend a week or too with them in the Summer and I got to take Grandma or his buddie’s seat at the Rangers game. Those were great memories. Been listening to Eric Nadel for 30 years. I finally get to see every game on TV now, but his voice soothes me.

Great story!

I’ll admit I grew up watching the Braves. I can still name their starters at each position to this day. I continue to be a Braves fan today, but I’m cheering for the Rangers with all I have tonight!

And it seems in games 6 and 7, every time the offense does something good, the pitchers give it right back in the bottom on the inning. :-(

Great story…thanks SARR. It’s cool to think O’s sports as an escape and a bonding thing. My son is a huge red sox guy…..probably started with my hatred for the Yankees. I’m into this rangers team and ready to be crushed.
The cowboys were my escape as a kid. Drew Pearson was my guy…it was always about 88.
When I decided to not attend the Alamo bowl a few years ago, I went to Addison to meet a buddy for the game. I got to sit and bs with #88 for an hour and wasn’t at all disappointed. Sports are a great addition in life. Tech is a bit different, and hits closer to home. It’s not just a team, it’s where I grew up (although some don’t think I have yet).

Totally agree- Tech football is different. Everything else is an escape. Tech football is life.

No bullfights. No gambling. No donkeys. No vanilla extracts. No piñatas. None of that stuff. Straight football. No switchblades.

Look on the bright side. It was always morbidly cool how the cubs and (formerly) red sox had all the good stories of how tough it was to be a fan.

Have to give a shout out to my Cardinals

To be dead in the water in August, claim the wild card on the last day of the season and then win the whole thing was pretty amazing.

Congrats to the Rangers. Two consecutive World Series is impressive as well.
