Tech WR Shawn Corker converts to CB last week and now he says there's a good chance he could start against UT
Twitter / @BrandonKLBK: Tech WR Shawn Corker conve ...
I'm sure that this will work out just fine.
UPDATE: From the LAJ:
"You put all your hard work and effort into it," Corker said Monday. "To see something that you love and have a passion for go away, you start growing and developing in different areas. Now I have dreams to be a starting corner in the NFL and hopefully start for this team."
Snip.
"Moving to corner, it was kind of coach Tubs' (Tommy Tuberville) idea," Corker said. "I was practicing at punt return, and they saw my ability to jam receivers off the line. I really did a good job at that, so coach Tubs was like, 'Let’s try him at corner. See how he does.' I really started to get the hang of it, picking up plays very fast, and here I am today."

Got to give Tubs credit on this one
I’ve been hammerin’ Tubs for “maintaining” where wholesale changes should be warranted. Tubs made a change here. Yes, due to injury, but a change nonetheless. Good for him.
Can he play man-to-man?
Is the real question. The only way to test this is on the field. I guess a good team to test this against would be UT and not OSU the following week.
If we can find some “man” corners, it’s a little easier to free up the safeties for run support.
Speed is key
Shawn Corker is fast supposedly. So he should be able to provide man-to-man coverage.

Geez
why is the spread only 10.5 after hearing this? With porter, bullit, and neboh out that leaves Vest (awful), DJ Johnson (has played better this year but awful in coverage and in open field tackling), Derrick Mays (havnt seen enough of him to have an opinion, but evidently the coaching staff has, and thats why we havent seen him a lot), Cody Davis (just downright horrific in coverage and the angles he takes when trying to tackle someone), Osunde (coaches havent really played him), and Dewhurst (he’s made some plays but he is sooooo damn slow) in the secondary. So we cant stop the run, and now the pass defense is in shambles……..UT defense will be a lot saltier than that banged up OU defense we played 2 weeks ago as well. All this equals bloodbath in my opinion.

Good luck to Corker
You nailed it. Our defenders are going to get burned all day long.

Well
He must be pretty good if he has a chance to start.

Why not go all out

The guy is actually an OU fan - I've seen the original
The UT stuff is all photoshopped in.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
Can he tackle and defend the run?
I’m basically to the point where that is all I’m hoping for from our defenders. I’m not expecting that we can cover someone. Just hoping they can tackle. That’s all, just get the person with the ball on the ground.

UT is gonna go after Corker
Like Doege went after Gabe Lynn

yeah, maybe tech should not announce it.

And they are gonna be just as effective...
Oh that’s right, I forgot, UT still has David Ash and Case McCoy at QB! But you’re totally right I mean both of them are WAY better than Doege so they are gonna crush us! We might as well not show up. I mean we lost to Iowa flippin State, so any move we make is obviously out of desperation and will fail miserably.
Good move
At the very least we are making a bit of competition in a position that needs some help
The game is getting more and more interesting
a WR at a corner? i guess you do what you got to do….good thing he is super fast.

What do they say about DBs?
They are WRs that can’t catch, not sure that applies to Shawn Corker. It is probably a good idea to get him on the field one way or another, although I do not want us to forget his potential at WR. He should have been getting a lot more snaps on offense.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
Good Point
And maybe, just maybe, he gets a pick because he CAN catch the ball.
LaRon Moore is a recent Tech example of switching, although with the level of talent at WR at the time, LaRon was never going to get many snaps. He also played a lot of DB in HS.

that game was great once the 4th quarter hit
otherwise kinda depressing being in the stands for the other 45 minutes
i like lose women
For those who have forgotten that every now and then we used to play defense.

Expect current #TexasTech wideout Shawn Corker to start this weekend. No choice but to start him. Had an offer from ’Bama as a DB out of HS.
Saw this too
Makes it easier to stomach.
Who knows, he may find he likes it and is better at it. We may have our very own “Honey badger”…

I want to see him back on offense next year.
It sounds like that may not happen.

Yeah
I enjoyed seeing his highlights on offense,
I’m glad Corker is a team player. That’s the kind of kids we need on this team.
If only we had a stellar coaching staff that could coach him up to NFL potential…bummer.

Too many others
For him to play receiver next year. He’s an athlete and they want him on the field. This is how we’re gonna recruit from now on. Screw the positions they play in high school, we’re there to get the best athletes on the entire field and then coach them into the positions our coaches see best. He’s a tall corner, but still fast and good hands. We work on his eyes and hips, he should be good.

I agree
being a wide reciever should help him, dont you think?
I’m feeling better and better about next year…considering we learn how to play call…

I actually think he should be getting more snaps now on offense. He is better than at least one slug that is getting snaps currently. I am fine with him playing defense this year, I just hope we don’t forget where he can from.

True
Good point.
I think it’s been said, but if anything, at least were building competition at positions. Competition breeds excellence.

I am just glad that Shawn found another way to contribute to his team.
Sounds like his dream was to be a receiver and when that did not work out he did not give up and maybe now he can renew his dream of playing at the next level as he develops. I will not make light of his dream. Instead I will support this young man as he tries to help make our Red Raiders better.

Hope the kid can make a difference. God, our secondary needs all the help it can get!
Let's go old school...
and make the offense play both ways.
Then we could hire these two as our new coaches..
