DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-10-04

I mentioned this yesterday in the comments, but my wife and I finally received news that we're traveling to Ethiopia to finally pick up our son, Fitsum.  We're still finalizing travel plans, but it appears that we are leaving on Saturday and will return sometime next week.  If you'd like to write a FanPost and help me out in getting up some content this week and next week, that would be tremendous, just email me at doubletnation AT  gmail DOT com.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Big 12 Board of Directors Action - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site
As expected, the Big 12 has agreed to equally share Tier I and Tier II revenue, upon each school committing to the Big 12.  That's the catch:

This action becomes effective after each member institution commits a grant of rights to the Conference for its Tier I and II television rights for at least six years.

Missouri is probably the last university to commit, and rightfully so, as they may have their sights set on the SEC.

Whether to trust Big 12 is at issue as Missouri curators meet today - KansasCity.com
The Board of Curators for Missouri meet today (this is like the Board of Regents for Texas Tech) and the thought is that they'll be deciding between the Big 12 and the SEC.

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
Red Raiders football notebook: Cobb, Hubert go with ones | Red Raiders
Interesting to see that LB Daniel Cobb and Cqulin Hubert run with the first team, although not surprising.  I thought they played well, but didn't play perfectly and Tuberville talked about that in the press conference yesterday.  They're just not as tentative and there was an improvement in terms of results when they were on the field.  I'm still incredibly optimistic that LB Blake Dees and LB Sam Eguavoen will be superb players, but the speed of the game is incredibly different than high school and I think Dees and Eguavoen are still adjusting to that.

In other news, WR Darrin Moore is highly questionable for this game, so the thought that he could play this week apparently isn't an option.  DE Scott Smith will play half the plays and Tuberville talks about what Smith will bring:

"It’s going to take a while for them all to come around," Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said, "but I’m glad we’re getting into a rotation where we can keep guys fresh and kind of get their wits about themselves and not have to play every snap at the speed they’re going to need to play the next eight games."

Snip.

"He’s excited," Tuberville said. "He’s been waiting for this for a year. I hope he plays well. He’s prepared himself. He’s gone against our offense a lot. He’s gone in our Sunday scrimmages with the younger guys, and he’s excited about playing."

Finally, Tuberville listed his players of the week:

POTW Offense:  RB Eric Stephens
POTW Defense:  FS D.J. Johnson
POTW Special Teams:  SS Terrance Bullitt
POTW Scout Team Offense:  WR Derek Edwards
POTW Scout Team Defense: DE Branden Jackson

Red Raiders defense showed improvement with Aggies coming to town | Red Raiders
Lots of quotes from DC Chad Glasgow here, where he talks about the linebackers:

"There’s great competition," Glasgow said. "You better not come out and have a bad day of practice because somebody is going to pass you up."

And the defensive end rotation:

"It’s going give us a chance to play at least four defensive ends up front," Glasgow said. "And the fresher we can stay the better pass rush we get."

A&M pass defense soft ... if you can avoid the rush | Red Raiders
Good stuff from OC Neal Brown as he talks about what to watch from the TAMU offense:

"They don’t outnumber you a lot," Brown said of the Aggies’ pass rush. "They try to confuse you. They usually only bring five or six, which we can protect, but it’s how they bring the five and six looks. They present to you like they’re going to bring seven, but they may bring only four, may bring only five.

"So we have to do a good job up front identifying who we’re going to take. Our backs have to do a good job identifying when they have to stay in protection and when they can get out. And then we’ve got to do a good job of actually staying in there and protecting."

Is a beast but he appears to be the only player on that TAMU defense who knows his ass from his elbows at the moment.

Safe Travels Seth and God Speed.

A couple of random thoughts this morining.

Glad to see ATM bickering on who to start on defense. HC wants to start younger guys, DC wants to start experience. Usually HC wins so we should see lots of young guys, which means that 120 ranking in pass defense should stay intact. Provided, however, our HC decides to run the ball 40 times. ATM has the best run defense in the conference, adn the worst pass defense out of 120 schools. Tubby, please throw the pass to set up the run.

More on realignment, I just can’t get it out of my head, why ATM and Missouri want to go to the SEC. ATM fans are a joke, they lose on game against Copy Cat State and the fans jump off the wagon. ATM did not sell all of their ticket in Jerry World, and I see where they returned 1,000 tickets from our game. Good for our students though.

My point is, losing empties stadiums. Missouri has only been a winnnig program the last 10 years. For decades, they could not win 4 games a year. They are going to get killed in the SEC, along with ATM. Neither will be able to get the same kids in school that LSU and Alabama get in. Miles let his QB play who was arrested, and when the charges were reduced, not dismissed, just reduced, he was on the field last Saturday.

The SEC is the cheaters league, and Missouri and ATM will not be able to compete. They will be lucky to win 5 games a year, and can you imagine what Kyle Field will look like. No need for expansion.

Tubby, just pass the damn ball this week.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

1000 tickets returned

This makes me very happy they are returning tickets so we can get more black in the stadium and make it more intimidating! Aggie fans are the worst and I deeply hope we beat their ass and say good riddance!!!! I will be there in my black cheering them on

Mizzou....

I am green with envy. I think the only thing that will keep them in the Big-12 is the large exit fee. If Tech was in the same position, I would be very angry if the Regents didn’t take the opportunity to go to the SEC.

I still wonder

how much of an actual offer Mizzwhorah has and how much of it is posturing.

by jef on Oct 4, 2011 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

That is a definite possibility. Sort of like the OU situation.

by bflood36 on Oct 4, 2011 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Why, do you really think we can compete in the SEC.

Tubby has said many times, the SEC is very physical. We are not a physical team. The PAC or Big 12 would fit more with our style.

What do you think the Jones would look like after we average 4 wins every year. I am sure we would end up in the SEC west playing against the likes of Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, and maybe we can split with Mississippit State and Ole Miss, and if we are lucky, we can play Kentucky and Vandy every other year.

Be careful what you wish for.

Me, just give me the WSL, and if not let the Big 12 survive in any format.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

by Btech on Oct 4, 2011 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

I am not really SEC specific, I just like the stability of that conference. The PAC-12 would be an excellent place to play as well.

bflood36 I feel your pain but....

living in sec land I don’t want TTU to come east…..it is too difficult cause as mentioned about they really don’t care about the rules over here and whether we like it or not bama, lsu, and florida will always be good…..atm will have a very difficult time…..could win in big 12-3 sure can’t win in sec…..I’m fine with big 12-3 for 6 years and let’s just see how things shake out after that…..Go Scotty!!! Wreck’Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Oct 4, 2011 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I am hoping that TTU is able to raise their athletic and academic profile in the next 6 years so that we can have control over our own destiny. I hate the fact the UT was the ultimate factor on whether we went to PAC this time around.

Burning the redshirts...

It’s weird to me that we’ve burned redshirts on so many players, including those at positions where we already have depth (Daniels, Kennard, Williams). However, we’ve been playing with only three defensive ends and our defense has been clearly struggling up front.

I’m stoked to get Scotty back for the A&M game, but I’m equally stoked that we’re able to keep the redshirt on Branden Jackson. Depth at DE is going to make a big difference in this game where we need fresh lungs and legs against a very potent Aggie run game. Can’t wait for Saturday!

Unleash the Scotty!

Going to the game

Looking forward to the blackout and a great evening of football!

Please stay and cheer for the Goin’ Band at halftime.

Please DO NOT boo the Aggie Band. You don’t have to like them, just don’t boo them for supporting their school and performing for us.

SOL on the booing the band thing

Just so ya know. I guess I could blow a whistle instead since they use whistle cadences. Take your pick.

by RdrPwr on Oct 4, 2011 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Fine, but just because they blow a horn while wearing a 1936 state troopers outfit doesn't mean they are members of the US Armed Forces

My Brother-in-law & sister have two daughters at or just out of A&M & they came up for the 2009 game. When the fans started booing the Aggie Band my brother-in-law said “Those guys are fighting for your country & you people boo them?”. They are not real soldiers. Let us repeat, they are not real soldiers. They are horn players who like to dress up for Holloween year round.

by RdrPwr on Oct 4, 2011 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Understood

They may be disillusioned into thinking they are real, but they are not THE TEAM.

I do not boo trick or treaters that come to my door because they are not what they pretend to be. I greet them with a knowing smile, give them a treat, and then send them on their way.

Also, I think that “they blow a horn” is a generous description.
