SOLID TEXAS TECH OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY VS. OKLAHOMA ST. DEFENSIVE LINE PRESSURE |  For Oklahoma St., their defense isn't spectacular, but it's been good enough, and sometimes that's all you need (all references to rankings are national rankings). OSU is 110th in total defense, 99th in rush defense and 100th in pass defense. That normally would not equal a 9-0 record, but it does, in part because the OSU offense has been so good and they've simply just out-scored opponents. What OSU has been good at is getting to the quarterback and getting behind the line of scrimmage. OSU is 23rd in sacks with 2.67 per game and 22nd in the nation at 7.22 per game. That's a lot. I like defenses that just make plays even if the defense gives up yards and points. It gives your offense the opportunity to score, and if there was every any question about whether or not Oklahoma St. does that, they're #1 in the country in turnover margin.

Meanwhile, the Texas Tech offensive line allowed 4.0 sacks last week and that doesn't account for the times that Doege was flustered and rushed throughout the game. And Texas Tech actually did a fairly decent job of moving the ball between the 20's, it was inside the 20 yard line that was a problem. The offensive line didn't help the scoring situation and can think of Keown's hands-to-the-face penalty as well as a few other false-starts and things like that that cost the offense valuable yards and opportunities inside the redzone. The offensive line has to be close to perfect this week because I don't think this offense can simply score at will. That's the perception, but the reality is that the offense just isn't good enough to do that and has been in a scoring drought of scoring at-will for what feels like all too long.

I fully believe that the Texas Tech offense needs to be running on all cylinders this week. Not really a shocking statment considering how bad the defense has been for almost the entire season, but the offense can't afford to falter. That's problematic and I think that the offense feels the pressure to score each and every time they have the ball and although that's the expectation, the truth is that it's not realistic and with that added pressure knowing that if you don't score, it's likely that the defense is going to give up a score makes the offense press, which is why I think you're seeing more penalties along the line. Even though there is that added pressure, QB Seth Doege does need to be better inside the redzone. That was one of the stats touted last week during the game was the fact that Texas Tech was so good in the redzone throughout the year, but after last week and the inability of the offense to generate much, if anything, my faith is shaken and I'd guess that they're questioning themselves as well.

I asked this after the game, but I want to know where the Pistol offense has gone and I think it needs to make a comeback this week. I know that this isn't popular, but the Texas Tech offense doesn't just need to score, but they also need to keep OSU off the field. If this was just about offenses, OSU has the advantage by a longshot (they're averaging 50 points a game), and the Texas Tech offense needs to somewhat control the clock and I think that this can be better accomplished by being varied, like the offense was earlier in the year, and continuing to use the Pistol offense to give the team some options. It does give the running backs a bit more ability to run downhill, but it also creates a situation where the offense can do some play-action and create some questions for the OSU defense.

Defensive matchups after the jump.

Star-divide

TEXAS TECH DEFENSIVE LINE PLAYING TECHNICALLY VS. OKLAHOMA ST. OKLAHOMA ST. EXECUTION OF OFFENSE | I don't know where to start. OSU has one of, if not the best, offenses in the country and OSU has had one of the best lines for a number of years. They're consistent and the line for OSU grinds out yards year after year, whether it be Gundy, Holgorsen or Monken at the helm, the rushing offense has been stellar and this year is no different. Obviously, the Texas Tech defensive line is in shambles right now. Earlier this week, Tuberville mentioned that he was going to try some different alignments on the line in the hopes that it helps, but right now it comes down to fundamentals and playing technically sound defense. There seem to be too many times this year where the defensive line is getting pushed around, linebackers are out of place and the opposing offense is simply gutting the defense on the ground. I don't know that there's any sort of miracle cure, but it starts with playing technically sound defense, playing assignment-based defense and not letting your opponent move you out of your gap with the hopes that the linebackers can make a play.

Someone along the line has to start making plays. DT Kerry Hyder made plays early in the year, but that's stopped. We read earlier this week how the pass rush is non-existent because the defense can't stop the run. That's all true. It seems like its been weeks since I can remember DE Leon Mackey and DE Scott Smith make a meaningful impact because they just haven't had the opportunity to rush the quarterback and part of the reason is that the interior of the line isn't getting it done and it creates a situation where the defensive ends can't just go after the quarterback. OSU still likes to throw the ball and perhaps there will be some opportunity there, but that can't mean that Smith or Mackey can just ignore the running game. They're going to have to play sound defense and the entire line is going to have to pressure Weeden.

Oklahoma St. runs the ball at a rate of 169.78 yards per game, which is good for 46th in the country. Considering the passing offense is 2nd in the country at 387.56 yards a game, this is more than acceptable and given the problems that Texas Tech has had in stopping the run, I'm expecting OSU to run the ball and let QB Brandon Weeden fill in the gaps. Weeden can beat you so many ways and the Cowboy receivers are skilled and WR Justin Blackmon is a physically imposing receiver that can make plays like Michael Crabtree could. He's just a physical specimen and that alone creates problems. Blackmon is the main receiving threat and I think I'd force Weeden to beat the defense with someone other than Blackmon, but that's easier said than done.

I'm not optimistic as Oklahoma St. has proven all year that their offense can get the job done as well as anyone else in the country. Weeden has passed for over 300 yards for 7 of their 9 games and the worst game for Weeden was against Texas where he only threw for 218 yards. OSU still gained 202 yards on the Longhorns on the ground. OSU's closes game came against Texas A&M where they only allowed 46 yards rushing and I think that's the best opportunity for Texas Tech. Force RB Joseph Randle and the OSU rushing attack to pass the ball (I don't like this option, but I don't have many), double-team Blackmon and make someone else the hero.

The paragraphs might be better below the bars next time, but otherwise I wouldn’t change a thing. The black is elegant and it otherwise seems easy to read and nicely laid out.

(Now I’ll get to reading through it.)

I like the new look/format ... hopefully the good Karma comes this Saturday

We need to hold on to the ball and not let OSU get any turnovers … no interceptions, no stripping of the ball, no fumbles

Tech Offense …. needs to score and score often and no penalties

Tech Defense …. please just tackle and hold your positions and stop OSU and no penalties

Special teams …. good kicks, good returns

Coaches …. coach, motivate, clock control

Tech could win and cause an upset …… “It could happen.”

As crazy as this season has been

A big win like OU would almost make more sense than a loss.

I agree with all of this...

…except let’s get real. I hope our red zone defense holds them to field goals and not TD’s. If we just do that, we have a chance in a shootout. That was the key to success against the sooners.

by candyroll on Nov 10, 2011 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Our stats are similar

The difference is their offense has been able to turn all those yards into points.
OSU is due for a bad offensive game. I hope it is against us.

OSU

Is the perfect example to show that our Defense doesn’t have to be great, just good enough at the right times. You just need an offense that can score points.

Three & out is the equivalent of a turnover. Our chances lie with execution on offense & just making a couple of big plays on defense. That’s what we did against OU, and it will work here too. Can we bring back gambling Tubby?

I suspect...

our defense will spend most of the day on their backs. I suspect high winds and plenty of draw plays up the middle. I suspect we’ll be playing catch up all day long and scoring in 3 point increments. Lastly, I suspect Blackmon has a record day.

Sweet!! Something I don't feel absolutely disgusting after reading!!

At this point I have to admit that I have gone through a paradigm shift of my own through the last few days. The importance of wins/losses has been brought down more than a few pegs on my ladder of priorities. Not saying it’s disappeared but losses don’t seem so earth shattering anymore.

I still hope we kick the shit out of these guys so I can tell all the okies I live amongst that we ruined the entire state’s year of football hopes:)

Don't you think one of the reasons we have abandoned the Pistol...

…is because we lost Knoewn. I admire Gallington stepping in like he did, but obviously he had a rough time getting the ball to Doege in a regular shotgun.

Sure, after the OU game, he had a week to work on it but there is only so much practice time you have.

Hopefully with Kneown back now, we can get back to the Pistol.

(BTW – I know I don’t regularly post, I’ve just been a “lurker” for a couple years, but I needed some way to distract myself from the PSU mess)

Keown has been back..only missed the OU game….coincidence that we won that one?

by Bryan Moore on Nov 10, 2011 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t know if you’re suggesting that Keown is a liability at center, but if you are you’re wrong.

by mojavereject on Nov 10, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

just bringing up the coincidence....

and I don’t think he’s a liability..but with 2 bad wheels that both need surgery after the season…..he has NOT been stellar, to say the least.

by Bryan Moore on Nov 10, 2011 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, i don’t know how he can push a defender out of the way to open up holes with two bad knees.

by Techcuz on Nov 10, 2011 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

We don't have too many running plays where the center is asked to single-block a DT

Usually he’s helping on a double-team with a guard, and that’s assuming it’s not a draw play anyways, which is about 50% of the running playbook at the moment.

by mojavereject on Nov 10, 2011 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

This game

will be won by the team that shoots themselves less . . . I don’t think anybody is stopping anybody. Unfortunately, we have a longer history of doing so. Maybe we’re tired of doing that?

This game wasn’t terrible last year, they just beat us over the middle and were SOOOOO much faster than our linebackers. It’s supposed to be windy, anything can happen.

by ZITbass0104 on Nov 10, 2011 12:44 PM CST reply actions

At first glance, the defenses look statistically similar

Tech (108th), OSU (110th) nationally in total defense. But when you consider scoring defense, OSU jumps to a somewhat respectable 75th while Tech remains near the bottom (105th). Demonstrates the impact of those turnovers.

I have felt pressure on the offense to score every possession for years. So, that’s nothing new. I just didn’t expect it would still be that way at this point.

Tech’s getting slaughtered on ABC Saturday. We might as well not even play defense. I think every time we don’t score they should get 5 pts and then take 3-5 mins off the board. Save everyone time and heart ache.

It could happen...

Before the OU game all we had was gloom and doom being posted. This is still the same team and staff that went to Norman and did the impossible. So if we have the perfect storm and all the planets align we could and I say could take down another BCS contender.

It will only take two possessions by each team to see if we are going to be blown out or if we have a real down to the wire game brewing. I believe if it comes down to the fourth quarter we will pull out another upset, which for me would just make the Iowa State and UT losses hurt more.

I predicted an OU win by more than 10 points so to help our team as much as possible I pick OSU by 20. Now go wreck em Tech!!!

Hope and Change

Im hoping this one goes better than expected. My fear is our rushing defense gets Donkey Puched and the secondary gets Gang Raped by the Weeden/Blackmon combo.

Hopefully, the offense plays more loose and fun, like in the OU game. They seem to be better when there is less pressure to win.

As a result of losing a bet, I have to refer to this team as "The team from Tech that lost to the Fightin' Texas Aggies" and I have to refer to our coaches as "The Tech Coach(es) that NEVER beat Texas A&M" until the end of the season.

I'd love a win but I'd settle for some signs of life going into the two more winnable games down the stretch

With all the injuries on defense I don’t think there’s much of a chance of that unit salvaging anything but some valuable learning experiences from this season. On the somewhat brighter side, at least this isn’t the Okie State offense of, say, 2007 vintage, who could generate 350 yards of rushing just as easily as they could passing. I think it’s one of those odd situations like the OU game to some extent, where the defense, as thin as it is, will match up better against a spread team than they did against a team that rolls out jumbo packages.

Still, it’s on the offense to dig themselves out of the funk they’ve been in. From the front half of the season to the back half, you can really tell that Doege is missing the twin safety valves of Eric Stephens and his swiss army knife performance out of the backfield, and Darrin Moore Jr’s big frame to throw at. You could see that even during the UT game, that having Moore out in the pattern, even at less than 100%, seemed to calm Doege down and allowed him to finally make a few things happen (albeit in garbage time). I’m sort of at a loss as to how Neal Brown should approach this one, because as much of a homer as I am, I just don’t think he has the horses to keep up with the Justin Blackmon show in a shootout. At the same time, though, without a talent like Stephens to rtdb, I don’t think the offensive line can generate enough room for the three-headed rushing monster of… Crawford, Washington and Williams (didn’t see that coming in August, did we?). They’re good pass protection guys and can run a screen with the best of them, but right now they’re not an O-Line you can run just anyone behind and be successful.

As rough as things look, I think Tech has a better chance to match up against OSU, because what they roll out on offense isn’t going to be something that will be totally incompatible with our defensive schematics and personnel. Doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have the capacity to get ugly, but I also think Tech could surprise everyone all over again.

Last time the Wounded Warriors came to town the QB from the eneny failed to fire;

I am hoping that the QB from Copy Cat State will have the same syndrome this Saturday.

We win if Brandon over throws his targets on at least five third downs, throws three interceptions, and fumbles at least once.

We win if their defense jumps off sides five times, has three pass interference or holding penalties, and drops two interceptions.
