Troy Trojans 85, Texas Tech Red Raiders 90 | Post Game Thoughts
Box Score | Post Game Quotes
THE RESULT | A GOOD START | I keep saying this, maybe because I want to enjoy the season and I think that if I get caught up in wins and losses, that I'll eventually be disappointed, but I'm not expecting any sort of post-season play and I'm okay with that. I'm even more okay with that after seeing the team last night. That was a really nice effort and it obviously could have been better as the game was closer than I'd like, but I saw a lot of encouraging things and I saw a coach who was excited after the game and what looked like, fired up to be a part of the program.
BACKCOURT | I've already mentioned Nurse and he was by far and away the best player on the floor yesterday for Texas Tech. PG Javarez Willis was also efficient, with 15 points on 5 of 9 from the floor, 4 assists and just 1 turnover. I'd also add that the point guard duties were really shared between Nurse, Willis and Deshon Minnis as they all took turns bringing up the ball. Minnis displayed the type of game that I think this team lacked, which was a tough guard player that could drive to the basketball and get a foul. Minnis isn't going to shoot many three-point shots, but he will drive to the hoop and he will get fouled. He's also big enough (6-3/19) in that he can finish at the rim. SG Toddrick Gotcher was quiet for most of the game, only taking 4 shots and making 3, but was solid on defense and I like his emotion. Troy pressed the entire night with man-to-man pressure and the guards seemingly had a tough time getting open to receive the ball, especially in the second half. I'd like to see a better job of breaking the press and it not being such an escapade to throw in the ball after the opponent makes the basket. And truthfully, the guards didn't really turn the ball over during the press, but I think I'd just like to see a bit more control. Defensively, I thought the guards did a nice job of running out and challenging each shot, however, this created some easy buckets for Troy as they were able to drive to the basket and get back in the game with better shooting and getting to the line and making their free throws. The help defense in the interior suffered as a result, but this team is working hard defensively and that's incredibly encouraging.
FRONTCOURT | A really short bench means a really short review of the frontcourt players. C Robert Lewandowski was in foul trouble most of the second half and that limited his effectiveness. Lew scored only 8 points on 9 shots and had only 4 rebounds. After the game, Lew said he and Tolbert needed to do a better job of rebounding and that's probably my biggest complaint. I'd also say that Lew needs to do a better job of making himself available in the post. Yes, he was flustered a bit inside by the Troy double-teams, but he has to accept the ball into the post to create open shots for his teammates, which happened in the first half. PF Jordan Tolbert has a Big 12 body as a true freshman and its only a matter of time before he figures it out. As mentioned above, he needs to be better on the boards, but if he can figure out just a bit of an inside game, then he'll be quite a player. SF Terran Petteway was erratic, but he really has a game that translates well to the transition game and he does scrap and fight on both ends of the floor. I thought that SF Jaron Nash would have seen more minutes, but he played only at the end of the game when the team was desperate for some inside presence.
COACHING | It was interesting to see Gillispie after the game as he quickly shook hands with the Troy staff and players and excitedly went up into the crowd to high-five the fans that were in the stands. And this wasn't an emotionless high-five, Gillispie was truly excited and I immediately thought of two things: Gillispie missed coaching and he wants to build something in Lubbock. He was so excited. Back to the game, where Gillispie had a short bench as SF Jaye Crockett, C Kader Tapsoba and PG Kevin Wagner are all out with injuries, none of them are season-ending, all sat out. I think that you'll see a completely different team when Crockett is ready as he is debatably this team's best player, he certainly has the most potential. Gillispie did have the team playing tough man defense, I liked Gillispie's use of timeouts to try to calm down an inexperienced team and I thought that the team consistently attacked Troy's zone defense, which means to me that this team was well-prepared.
MVP | PG Ty Nurse | Nurse was on fire for most of the game and just couldn't miss as he had 29 points on 9 of 13 from the field and 6 of 9 from beyond the arc. Nurse was plagued with turnover problems, as did the entire team during the exhibition, but Nurse only had 3 turnovers for the game and was incredibly solid.

Good start...
I liked the TO’s being below 20. I thought we had a great offensive showing, except for a lacking of the inside game. But, if you are hitting your shots outside the paint the inside game becomes less important. I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the players, fans, and coaching. Over 10K in attendance is great! The things I wasn’t impressed with was rebounding and backcourt defense. Big Lew needs to bring out the guns and throw his body around to make his presence known. I’m not one to encourage flagrant fouling, but I was always tought to foul HARD, not dirty, down low in the post. Grab those rebounds with authority! Also, the guards played decent defence, but don’t let the other team drive and slash so easily to the hoop. Another thing I question is why Nash wasn’t playing, what’s the deal there? I believe Nash to be one of the better talents on our squad. All in all, happy for the win, and think this young team will be great as they grow.

This is gonna be a great brand of basketball to watch!
and don’t be surprised if this team comes into it’s own toward the end of the season!

I could only watch the game by voice.
I tried ESPN3 and that worked until halftime, then it was voice only. Frustrating game to listen to, but the RR never quit attacking. This looked like a team against a set of pickup players. That is expected, they hardly know each other’s moves. This squad has talent and a good coach and will only get better and better.
I thought Billy G had them ready to play.
Troy put on a full court press the entire game. The freshman handled the pressure really well, and once we got into our offense they showed a lot of patience. I don’t have a lot of expectations in terms of wins and losses, but I can get excited if they play with this much energy each night.
Bill G welcome to Texas Tech and thank you for taking this gig.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
IMHO...
Billy Clyde is the best coach and the best recruiter in the Big 12. That’s a deadly combination!….I’m really excited about the direction Tech is headed in Mens BB…..and I don’t think it will take as long as some think for him to turn this thing completely around.
I was disappointed in the turn out last night…what fan’s were there… were vocal…and I know it will take time for Billy to create the excitement to get people there…hopefully the students will show regardless of w’s and l’s…..I’m telling you though, you better jump on this band wagon quick.
For the most part I liked what I saw
Lew needs to do a better job of playing disciplined basketball early on, this spending the last 15 minutes in foul trouble is no bueno. Tolbert’s on the right track, Nash was good off the bench, Nurse and to a slightly lesser extent Willis are pretty sick from the arc, and I don’t know what exactly Pettaway was doing but he played most of the game and didn’t make too many glaring errors so maybe I just don’t know enough about basketball to see what he brings to the table (not sarcasm btw, I really don’t know much). Overall I liked what I saw.
Great to start the BCG era with a win
I enjoyed finally getting to see the team play. Overall a nice performance. Good hustle and effort. Conditioning looks good.
Offense looked pretty solid. Turnovers not too bad considering the pressure defense, although it definitely looked shaky at times. Pleased to see the excellent 3-pt. shooting and one way to beat a zone is to shoot over it. However, I hope the team doesn’t become over-reliant on the 3. Would have preferred to see a touch inside on most possessions. Perhaps this is on Lew for not being assertive, but I put it equally on his teammates for not getting him the ball. Even if the post player doesn’t shoot, getting the ball inside really opens things up. It just didn’t look like it was much of a priority to me.
Defensively, good effort but plenty of room for improvement. They need to get back on defense rather than celebrate after exciting scores, more on-ball pressure, better closing out on 3-pt. shooters and more sliding over and helping on drives to the basket.
I don’t think things will go all that well in B12 play. But I do see an enthusiastic, athletic and talented group of players that I look forward to watching throughout the season. However it plays out, I expect this to be a better team at the end of the season than they are now (in stark contrast to the football team).
Favorite moment was BCG’s post-game foray into the stands. Nice touch!
This was a good game, like the two exhibitions, it helped the team more than we can know.
We can see what the coach is talking about when he says things about the team that indicate they have a lot to learn and much work to get there.
I am impressed with the guard play in general. I saw a lot of passing to give opportunities to break the opposing defense down, then I also saw some guys hit 3’s like they were routine shots. The defense will get better because we have a coach that will demand it in order to get playing time. They took good care of the ball and that in the face of a very strong aggressive defense especially on in bound plays. That this group handled that so well impresses me, both from an execution perspective and a coaching perspective.
I like Petteway’s game…it is raw but I like him. Man what a head of hair !! He plays with aggression and speed, confident, does not let an oops bother him. He will be fun to watch over the course of his career. Impressed with a Galveston kid, that area has a reputation for rough, he shines double at this point in my eyes.
I have never seen a bb coach go into the stands like Gillispie did at games’ end. That boy is going to be easy to like. He cares like no one can know and he is incredibly open and humble with it, down to earth is what I am seeing. I would love to talk with him a couple of hours to see if he is the kind of person I think he is. And his team was prepared in a way that I haven’t seen in years…even after such a short time of work with them.
Troy played fun basketball and it made the whole of the game fun. Their play allowed our guys to be open and creative which gave us the chance to see their more raw abilities. When they are harnessed into a solid up tempo team style of play we are going to grin big.

Nice win!
I’m really pumped about seeing what BCG’s gonna do with the basketball team this year. And going into the stands and hi-fiving the students—that’s greatness! Sure as hell is a night and day contrast to the “I don’t give a shit” attitude around the football program.
Fun
The game was a lot of fun. Troy came ready to play. Tech won’t face a team that runs a man press and a zone D for a long time. Troy at times was flustering the team on the inbound, but Tech manager to overcome it.
A few observations.
Tech had ZERO inside presence this game. We had a tough time getting offensive and defensive rebounds. I don’t recall many points in the paint at all. We can’t expect to shoot this well every game. We need Crocket back.
Second, the rotation was interesting. I would guess before Lew got into foul trouble maybe 8 different players played in game. From what I have read Billy G has these guys in shape. Nurse put on a show. It seemed to me that he wasn’t expect to be the leading scorer, but once he go hot Nurse was moved to Shooting Guard. I look forward to the rest of the season. I expect a season more closely to Billy G’s first season at UTEP than compared to his first season at A&M.
