Infamous "vote of confidence" given by Tech AD
Tech AD Kirby Hocutt essentially just fired cTT tonight. Well, not literally. But when an AD feels compelled to say something like the things he says in this article during a season, you know the writing is on the wall. Actually, no. I don't know, but I do hope.

Some good comments on that article, this one caught my eye.
Wow.
KSU was, perhaps, the worst program in the country. What a silly comparison.
Tubs inherited a team w/ 15 consecutive winning seasons, ranked in 4 of previous 5 years at year-end, 10 seasons w/o a losing conference record (Leach’s first year) and an overall 10-year conference record at ~66%, one of only 7-8 teams to win 8 games every year for the last 8 years, list goes on.
In under 2 season, TTU has gone from the 3rd best program in the conference to the 2nd worst.
Meantime, so many Leach-influenced teams doing well – UofH, OSU, WVU, BAY, etc.
Wow.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

What I see here is...
Our press spinning a positive light so that all the Recruiting Commits don’t leave.
BUT… with a game like today, don’t be surprised when they de-commit soon….
remember shortshop came from Miami, when is the last time they had a winning season
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
I am sorry. I am a die-hard fan. I root for the team, players, and school.
But what I saw today was a team whose leader had lost control of every aspect of the game. That was embarrassing, unispired football. TT has a lot of good qualities. But I no longer feel that more time will make any positive difference.I felt like I was watching one of Rex Dockery’s or Jerry Moore’s teams. I felt ill. So much wasted potential.

Jerry Moore never had the talent Tubby has
forgive my memory but:
I actually liked Moore – even though I never met him.
When he took over the program from Dockery, the cover was bare. I believe he started a walk on program that was very successful, and was copied by many other schools. This was a time when they began to ratchet down the number of football scholarships that could be given.
As bad as things were during the Moore years (and yes I have even used the “Help Jerry’s Kids” here. ), I always felt Jerry was a very humble and genuine person. I believe that some of Spike (and McW) success was inheriting a program that was moving from the cellar to mediocre.
Remember, Jerry’s Appalachian State kids beat Michigan a couple of years ago, and have won 3 national Div II championships (2005-07)
Moore was a much better coach!
Moore IS a genuinely humble guy from everything I’ve read about him.. Moore has been very open over the years about what he’s said were his failings as a coach here at Tech, and about what lessons he’s learned from the experience. As we’ve seen, he apparently learned quite a bit, as his success at Appalachian State has proved.
I thought Moore was a clown when he was a Tech, but I now respect him as a coach and as a human being by the way he’s taken his “lemons” and “made lemonade” out of them in his life. A good lesson for everyone.
*sigh*
We weren’t very good last week and the week before that and this week.
Yeah… yeah…
Be a team. Be the most excited to play. Be the best at doing your @#&$ing job.
I don't know
This sounds more to me like we’re stuck with Tuberville for now so don’t start turning over cars till the end of next season. This team has regressed so much it’s pathetic.

I'm a little mad at what eric ward had to say
"They’re with you when you win, but when you’re losing, they kind of get skeptical," Ward said. "We (players) always look at each other, because that’s all we got. Whether we win or lose, we’ve got to stay together, because fans are going to be fans. Fans are just human. When stuff goes their way, they’re with you, but when it doesn’t, they start to back down."
Who here has backed down? Who here is not committed to Texas Tech football? We have seen low points before and we hate it. I Love Tech football too much to sit there and watch them get bent over a table. When I am not there it is because I cannot bear to look, and I am also sending a message.
He's a kid...
that probably has a great deal of frustration of his own especially since he could have gone to OU but chose this abortion instead.
I must say I don’t blame anyone of those fans for leaving after the first quarter. HS teams could have put up a better fight. Glad I decided to stay home for this one.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
No offense to you but...
I am tired of hearing this He’s a kid argument. I teach middle school, and I can ask them simple questions and they 9 times out of 10 they have the right answer. I hear this excuse with Adam James He was just a kid. I hear this excuse for the people rioting at Penn St. Well they are just kids. Eric Ward is essentially insulting us. I don’t think he tried to. I think he misspoke, but that does not take away what he said. I bought season tickets, and I think I will buy them again next year, but I do not like to be called a fair weather fan because I cannot watch the team I love lose 66-6. Tech is the only team I love. I like the rangers I like LSU and I went there too. I like the Cowboys, but I love Texas Tech.
None taken
I just think tensions are high in the locker room and his immaturity may be getting the best of him. Some players rarely get to speak to the media and they typically go after players who look pissed or look like an easy target.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
very well said but I still think it is not an excuse.
especially at 20 years old.
Excuse for what??
You guys are having this very weird sidebar over nothing. You had no good reason to be mad in the first place; Raider1992 had no good reason to invoke the “He’s a kid” defense because Ward didn’t do anything wrong.
“They’re with you when you win, but when you’re losing, they kind of get skeptical,” Ward said. “We (players) always look at each other, because that’s all we got. Whether we win or lose, we’ve got to stay together, because fans are going to be fans. Fans are just human. When stuff goes their way, they’re with you, but when it doesn’t, they start to back down.”
Very sensible statement. This isn’t Eric Ward’s fault.

In other words, the best fans are those that close the shades when the weather’s bad. Not an unreasonable position, but let’s call a spade a spade. I turned off the game because I don’t need to watch Tech get tattooed—because I, as a human, am to a certain degree a fair weather fan.
We were all cheering louder in 2008. That’s what it means to be a fan.

fair weather fans abandoned this team after Iowa State, if not after last SEASON
I don’t consider someone a fair weather fan for leaving before the end of this specific game, heck IMO if they went to the game at all after the previous two that shows a measure of dedication.
I’m not a fan of lousy football. I admit I watched this game from home but if I were there I would have left for Ruby’s at halftime. I watched the whole thing on TV becuase it was like watching a grusome car wreck which held my attention.

This is an emotional game but....
I am tired of the “They are just kids” excuse they are 20 years old. They can go to war. They have moral opinions. People are seeming to think that 20 year olds do not know right from wrong I said Eric Ward misspoke. I was not blaming him. He was tying me and you in with other fans that only watch when we win. I watch and care if we win or lose that is why I read DoubleTnation.
This isn't "right from wrong"
You aren’t morally entitled to have some stranger praise your total commitment to Texas Tech football. Eric Ward didn’t rape your mother. He didn’t accuse you, Tball, of anything. At worst, he called Tech fans quitters. This isn’t a moral issue.
by Skin Patrol on Nov 12, 2011 10:44 PM CST up reply actions
I am not addressing Eric Ward in that statement.
I am addressing Adam James and the fans of Penn St. and the people who say they are just kids. I am tired of that excuse.
What did he say that was wrong?
He said fans are human. He said that he looks to his teammates for support. He said fans are backing down.
All three statements are true.

I said it made me a little upset because it sounds like he is saying I only care about Tech if they are winning.
I think the entire exercise is unproductive.
What you’ve divined from his quote is not what he said. You don’t need to lose any sleep over Eric Ward saying that fans “start” to back down. The stadium was empty; what did you expect him to say? “Thank God the fans haven’t quit on us?”

I did not mean to bring an argument. He said what he said, and I stand by what I have said. If we have the worst lose in Texas Tech history and I am there I will leave again. Who would want to stay for that? You are no longer a fan at that point you are crazy.
We agree!
We don’t need to watch that. If Eric Ward doesn’t like it, he can pound sand. But we also don’t need to get righteously indignant about some 20 year old mouthing off about the fact that he just got his ass handed to him in front of an empty stadium.

That certainly wont help. I definitely will not go to games if the players I cheer for insult me.
This is exactly where the whole "he's just a kid" comes in.
Kids say wild shit. I said insane things when I was 20. I’m 28 and I still say insane things. Life is too short to let things that Eric Ward says, after an emotional loss, impact whether you are or aren’t going to cheer for a football team.
I agree with you that he does not need to insult the fans, but I’m encouraging you to keep sight of the context. A 20-year old talks a bit loose (maybe) after a devastating home-loss, in which the bleachers emptied. This is hardly unusual.

This
I believe is coming from the coaching staff. Thus the, “next time I hear someone boo Adam James I’ll come up in the stands myself” crap from Tuberville.
If that is not an, “it’s us versus the fans” statement I don’t know what is.

That's right
I tend to agree. However, the old “us versus the fans” thing will wear thin when they don’t have any fans watching them.
I liked it better when the coaching staff didn’t make such stupid-ass comments like this and said things like “Do your job! Do your job over and over and over!” (BTW, we were more successful then, too.)
I sat through the entire game. it was likewatching a jv team. we had great seats so we wanted to stay but we did not see much football. r we suppose to stay and watch a total murder? I love tech. I am a FIRM believer that you are NOT required to sit through garbage like this
to prove you’re a fan. We have lives outside of Tech football and if the product on the field isn’t worth sitting around and watching, then by all means get a head start on the other things you need/want to do. I’ve left a TON of bad games early. And I will in the future. I’m not gonna sit there to try and prove some silly point about how bad ass my fandom is.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
I agree, 92!
Believe me, I’m saying RIGHT ON with that statement! Especially if you’re an older fan like me and have seen this movie before (and those 7 losing Dockery/Moore seasons were truly “seasons in hell”, like the title of a book about the early Texas Rangers). Belltower folks everywhere tend to notice when fans start deserting the sinking ship, like happened with Pat Knight’s program, and sooner or later will make changes. My brother and I were saying ‘we ain’t renewing if this clown’s not replaced before next season." Even with cheaper tickets, it’s quite an investment of time, money and emotion (which we Tech grads have always been VERY PROUD to make for the most part), and seeing it wasted on a team and/or coaching staff that doesn’t seem to care really piises me off. We working folks will support Tech teams, but not if Tech doesn’t give a shit. We’ve been loyal Tech fans for over 40 years, through good AND bad times, but loyalty is a two-way street. The “belltower apologists” don’t see this or care about this—but we damned sure do!
Plus, it's not always possibe to clear that Saturday's slate for four hours
I’ve gone to games that ended up being great but left early…once to go to a wedding of friend, another to go pick up a buddy who’s car died on the Slaton Hwy, once because I was more interested in that nights USC v Notre Dame game when they were both good…lots of reasons I leave early from time to time. But getting beat up on the field is reason number one.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
Completely agree!
If you pay for the seat, you can stay or leave whenever you damn well please. It kinda reminds me of fans that bitch about teams “running up the score”. If you don’t want a team to beat you by 50 (err 60) pts, keep them out of the freaking endzone!
If the team wants to keep asses in the seats:
1. Show some effort for the FULL 60 minutes.
2. Get fired up and show some emotional investment.
3. Show progress and some success.
4. Give the fans a reason to stay invested in the game for all 4 qtrs.
It’s not that damn complicated. No one expects them to win 12 games this year. But if I’m investing my time and money, I’d better see some PROGRESS and effort. Period!

What happened inside the locker room?
Like other folks have mentioned, something happened to this team after the OU game. In the losses to fishbait and K St, at least the team was fighting and trying. But since then the whole team seems to quit at the first excuse. I’m sure some of the players are still trying hard, but there are enough quitters out there to sabotage the effort of the others. A couple players have made veiled references to arguing among the team, but not enough info is out there to know exactly what’s going on.
Sure looks like we have a cancer on this team, and a coaching staff that has no clue about how to get it under control.

"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
It's pretty clear...
Tuberville has lost control of his team. That is truly a sad situation. Even though I didn’t like what was done to ML, and still don’t (good ole boys and their underhanded ways tend to piss me off). I thought if you are going for a CEO type of HC, Tommy Tuberville might be a good choice. Here is my problem with this. Even though his recruiting (salesmanship) may be better than ML, he’s still going to be behind 3 or 4 other programs in this conference. When he puts a product on the field such as he has the last three weeks he cannot expect to have success with his recruiting in the upcomming years. He has lost the battle, and now he’s about to lose the war.
And this quote from an OSU player in an OK newspaper
Texas Tech fans weren’t the only ones affected by OSU’s big early lead.
“Those last two plays before the half,” Lewis said of a couple Texas Tech snaps, “one of the D tackles told me that the center told him the play. It was going to be a draw twice.”
Lewis raised an eyebrow as if in answer to how important quick starts are.
“What else can you say?”
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
This is ridiculous
How could Koewn tell the other team the plays and who know how many times he did this. This is not something you go and tell the media if it is brought to your attention. you keep it quiet tell a few people. The DT did not even say this it was a linebacker. We are literally telling them the plays. Not like it will help because anyone can tell our plays.
Exactly
It doesn’t matter if the other team is told the plays, everyone knows what they’re going to be anyhow.

Tubs must take responsibility for the team's attitude
From what I have gathered from Tubby’s talks, the OU victory was huge and unexpected. Remember afterwards his post-presser struck me a bit odd—he had great praise for Doege (which he should), then talked defense—I don’t remember any other praise. Apparently we won the game because of defense—he seemed to ignore the offensive fireworks.
Then we get blown out by Iowa State—team totally listless (like today). Letdowns happen, but what struck me was Tubby’s presser where he repeatedly said, “we kept telling them all week this would happen.” Apparently then, the team does a great job beating OU,only to have your coach basically tell you the rest of the week it was probably a fluke and there’s a good chance ISU will beat you. And when they did—he said I told you so.
This was followed by a series of Tub’s mantra to the press of “We’re not a very good team.”
Followed this week by telling the press that we haven’t been a good team the last few weeks, and that we “probably won two games that we shouldn’t have—Nevada and OU.” Mantra continued—“We’re not a good team.” His demeanor on the sidelines repeatedly reinforces this—he keeps looking detached, defeated.
If this is the image Tubs is creating for his team in the public eye—what is he preaching in the locker room? When Eric Ward tweets that things seem to be going along fine until someone makes a mistake, or the other team scores, then he sees teammates start to shut down, this is a classic symptom of this losing mentality. If someone tells you enough times, or your public enough times, that you aren’t good—the moment you make a mistake that logically kicks in, and it becomes an excuse or a rationale—I guess coach is right, I’m not very good, so working harder won’t help, I’ll probably mess up more. Why take the risk? And when they look to Coach for encouragement—he looks like he can’t wait to get the hell out of here.
I really have never seen a coach interact with his players in this way—and I find it confusing, degrading, and totally disheartening. I have been a teacher for 30 years—if I approached my students’ learning/testing abilities in this manner, my test scores and learning quotient would be abysmal—and I would be called on the carpet to explain. Such lack of success would be considered by and large something I could prevent—it would be my fault. Students will generally respond to your expectations provided they believe and respect you—both positive and negative expectations. If Tubs were a high school coach and Tech his high school team, he would be called to account, and possibly relinquished of duties at season’s end. No doubt.

This team is DONE
I’ve been telling friends and co-workers for two weeks that Tubs has lost this team. There is something going on of which we got a little glimpse based on Eric Ward’s quotes after the game.
I’m not talking about the quotes about the fans. I gave the formula for that problem above. I’m referring to the quotes about the players quitting and not giving maximum effort. They clearly don’t have each others back.
Players offering quotes like that usually is not a spur of the moment reaction to a bad loss. This is something that has been brewing with Ward would be my guess and he finally decided to throw it out there. I’m glad he did, but wouldn’t be surprised to see his playing time limited the next couple of games.

I'm tired of Tub's bullshit
Not sure how else to say it. Makes me sick to see what has happened to our team and our overall brand for that matter.
Example 1 – “Hard for teams to show emotion and be fired up once you get down by 21 points”. Bullshit. That is a leadership problem. We see big comebacks time and time again and there are plenty of examples within Tech history. Hell we came back from 21 down at Kansas THIS year. Just an excuse for shitty leadership.
Example 2 – “We are not a very good football team right now.” Over and over and over again. I’m sick and tired of hearing this. Guess what, YOUR players have bought in 100% and apparently now think they aren’t very good. Absolutely terrible leadership!
Example 3 – We don’t have the players we need to be successful on defense. Answer = tough shit. coach them up and find a way. But stop telling your players over and over they aren’t good enough to get the job done.
Example 4 – We’re trying to build something here and it takes time to build a successful program. Holy shit. All I’ve seen is Tubs taking a successful program and tear it down. The cupboard wasn’t bare when he arrived. Anyone see what KState looked like when Bill Snyder came back to coach? Look at them now. We had far more talent when Tubs arrived (as a comparison) and look where we are! It is Tubs job to take the players he has and put them in a position to be successful. That is the bottom-line.

Even if Tuberville stays and somehow turns the program around
I guess we can look forward to: This team just isn’t good enough to beat rival XYZ, win the conference, qualify for a BCS bowl, etc.
And why isn’t the team good enough? Because the coaching staff doesn’t recruit well enough or coach well enough. Or both.
"Three Ring Circus is Done"
I want this to be taken to heart by all who love Tech and the football program that used to be. It is time for all alums etc to start a website and petition for the immediate resignation of Kent Hance and Guy Bailey, and remove Tommy Fluberville. It is obvious to the whole country that FT has lost this entire football team and program. This is as bad of a collapse in Texas Tech history by far. Every once in a while, when a coach loses the players and fans and alums, you have nothing left to sell, nothing left to work on, which is where this program is in less than two years.
In the game quotes, Fluberville is still referencing running the damn football, which makes me want to throw up. Unfortunately for Tech fans, alums, our administration over power and personal feelings has torn this program down with the hiring of Fluberville, and to protect this house, a house cleaning has to happen immediately.
