Who would you hire?
Since we've all got our torches and pitchforks ready, and practicing our best Donald Trump impersonations, let's play "Who would you hire?" as the coaching staff for the Texas Tech football team.
The rules:
- You must name a HC, OC, and DC.
- No former or current HCs allowed.
- All must be living.
To make things more interesting, name 2 sets:
1st set of coaches, money is not an obstacle (and we'll assume that everyone has a price).
2nd set of coaches, max combined salary is $4MM.
Here's a list, if you need a some ideas
GO.

I think I can cover both #1 and #2 with the same list
Some familiarity with the Tech program I think helps with the future so….
Sonny Dykes – HC – Shown positive success at La. Tech and moving in the right direction
Seth Littrell – OC – Stepped to East Carolina and shown he can quickly involve a high scoring offense.
I still think Glasgow needs the benefit of the doubt with getting players in and Tech suffering 3 different defenses in 3 years. I think with offenses in the top 10 from the Big 12 you just need someone vaguely competent. I’d like to take either Chris Ash or Charlie Partridge from Wisconsin.
If we wanted a combo HC/DC then maybe John Chavis from LSU.

Littrell is OC at Arizona right now
you’re thinking of Lincoln Riley

I'd love to see
June Jones HC, June Jones OC, Chris Ash DC
Teach me how to Doege teach me teach me how to Doege!!!
I kind of like this idea of June Jones
He has helped SMU a lot and brought a lot of national attention to Hawaii. He is proven to win and has a good idea on how to use a high power offense.
Jones
I like this guy as a candidate. This is a guy who would do well at Tech IMO.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
He's a winner and unlike Tuberville
He has a grasp on college football in 2011. He’s made SMU relevant again for the first time in 20 years. He’d sell our program and I really think our student body would embrace him. I go to SMU and I can see how much People like him. He’s worth serious consideration from TTU brass. Plus, I really like having a coach that’s calling the shots on offense. We could get rid of tubs and Neal brown in one quick swoop!!!!
Teach me how to Doege teach me teach me how to Doege!!!
June Jones likes a real challenge when he picks a new job
If you want him, you’re going to have to lure him in by averaging 2 or 3 wins for a couple decades first.
by mojavereject on Nov 13, 2011 5:59 PM CST up reply actions
I think Jones is also making a small fortune at SMU if I recall correctly.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
They both make $2million per year. It’d be a wash for TTU if they could get him. It’d give him a chance to coach big12 and rebuild something special. Obviously something he has a passion and knack for.
Teach me how to Doege teach me teach me how to Doege!!!
Not worth the $$$ were not in the Hawaii SMU boat, JJ is a rebuilder or rubble he would make rubble then rebuild it we have a good base

Hah, I’d say we qualify for his services based on the requirements you’ve just stated. TECH football is simply awful right now. Perhaps “awful” may even be an understatement. If “rubble” is a requirement – I’d say we have plenty of burning turned over cars and smoking buildings right now. We need a shot in the arm and 3 new coaches.

Similiar Offense
Runs a similiar offense but not part of coaching tree the powers that be would object to.

My wishlist:
HC- Kevin Sumlin: Knows Texas recruiting, was a damn fine offensive coordinator before stepping up, builds programs.
OC- I’d actually prefer the head coach to be either the O or D coordinator as I’m finding this whole CEO head coach experience to be a bit of drag, but if I have to name someone else, I’ll go out on a limb and see if I can get Scott Frost to bring some of that Oregon zone-read option down to Lubbock
DC- Ron Cooper, defensive backs coach at LSU. He’s been a head coach and coordinator at various stops around the country and in plenty of systems.
Guess I should respond t my own question
HC Chip Kelley
OC Seth Lettrell
DC Ellis Johnson
Budget Coaches
HC Charlie Strong
OC Seth Lettrell
DC Brick Haley
HC – Sumlin
OC – Gus Malzahn
DC – Kirby Smart
II
HC – Chris Pedersen
OC – Lincolin Riley
DC – ?

HC:
1. Larry Fedora at Southern Miss. 3rd team in the state and yet can recruit and still win. 30-18.
2. Kevin Sumlin of Houston. 33-16
3. Chris Ault, HC of Nevada. 224-100-1. essentially been with Nevada since 76.
we need a head coach that is committed to the program and will stay to build for the long term.
OC & DC
let the new head coach
Lou Holtz,
sorry to break the rules, but i didnt want to do the research on the other positions. oh wait, i know, Norm Chow for OC. He taught Leach in Leach’s coaching infancy. Dunno how those coaching styles match up, dah well.
What about Zach Thomas?
He clearly still has a passion for Tech since I know I have seen his face on the jumbo tron at Tech more than once.
Great football players don’t always translate into great coaches. If Zach goes the coaching route I would think he needs to spend some time learning how to be a coach. Dat at A&M is doing very well after his legacy as a player and I would assume Zach could do the same in time.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
No it does not necessarily but...
How can it be worse?
You are on the right track but mixing and matching coordinators will probably get you another cluster.
You will have to open the bank and pay what it takes to get :
1. Successful Div I Head Coach with a 5 yr history of being Div I head coach.
2. Complete staff would be willing to come ($$$$$$) including both coordinators.
3. Ability to recruit Texas and Oklahoma – Ability to recognize underrated athletes
4. Knows how to excite players, fans, and donors
5. Young enough to have emotions and old enough not to fool himself.
Bonus:
Previous Tech staff or alumni
Previous recruiting in Texas and Oklahoma
Like being in college town
I have had season tickets to U of H for a while. Their head coach and offensive staff are attractive but the defense is scary bad at times. However they totally dominated ECU to a point where ECU couldn’t even get a first down.
So for those of you who think any staff from ECU would be a positive need to re-examine your views.
If U of H is able to finish undefeated against SMU. Tulsa, and Southern Miss., and do well in a bowl game I would go after the staff immediately.
By the way it took me one half to recognize Ruffin McNeil on the sideline since he has lost a bunch of weight.

Good job, Ruff!
Man, I salute you so much for losing all that weight this past year. Know you will live a LOT longer now. I remember just how much you were struggling trying to do your job with that handicap. I sure could use some tips on that, and will try to follow your example.
Nice but seems he could get some pants that fit from the equimpment staff or maybe he lost more weight during the first half

here we go
HC: Les Miles
OC: Gus Malzahn
DC: Kirby Smart
Since that will NEVER happen, heres a more realistic choice for me.
HC: Kevin Sumlin
OC: Kliff Kingsbury
DC: Randy Shannon
sad tech fan is sad :(
I think realistically
Hc
1. Art Briles
2. Kevin Sumlin
3. Gus Malzahn
Oc.
1. Kliff Kingsbury
2. Gus Malzahn
3. Lincoln Riley
Dc.
1. Chad Glasgow(I’ve seen this d in person and its not totally Russian coffees fault)
2. That guy from smu that I can’t name
3. John Chavis….. Can’t I dream?
Sumlin
Sumlin as HC
Kingsbury as OC
Rocky Long as DC
HC- Sumlin
OC- Kingsbury
DC- If they hire the first two I could care less.
My preference is to bring in someone who is familiar with an offense we ran at some point in time. With Keenum graduating I think SUmlin would be a great pickup this year. Kingsbury mainly b/c i think he would make a great long term coach after sumlin.
I dont think Licoln riley would ever come back after ’09, but I guess a large sum of money can cause anyone to forget.
Well....
1. Butch Jones
2. Gus Malzhan
3. Kevin Sumlin
4. Kirby Smart
OC (since all those are offensive coaches sans Smart I’ll just take…cause I miss him)
1. Kliff Kingsbury
DC
1. Russian Coffee
2.

Not hire - Rehire
You can’t ask what people think & then tell them they can’t think what they think. Until the previous coach lands in a new job, this can be fixed, with a reasonable amount of cash (less cash than the Ad will lose in lost ticket sales next year) and a massive mea culpa. Or more likely a resignation of the Chancellor.
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
+1
But this would require our admin to admit they erred and accept fault.
I an all for leach to be back at the helm.

Whyt Not Leach?
All you will hear is…“accept it, Leach is not coming back”….but why not?
I just can't imagine
Leach agreeing to come back while Hance is here, and we’re stuck with Hance for three more years.
by RedRaiderForLife95 on Nov 13, 2011 8:22 PM CST up reply actions
If money is not an option...
I can think of maybe 10million reasons why, all kidding aside though, I bet if you made Leach the top paid coach BY FAR (before some other school surpasses just to wave it around) then I bet you could get him in there even with Hance. Because, let’s be honest, if Leach got rehired he’d know he had Hance’s manhood in a cup. Which is also why it will never happen.
Then hire a witch doctor
And pay him to cast an evil spell on Hance—heeheeheeheeheeheeheehee!!!
Sumlin-HC
Riley or Littrell- OC
It won’t matter cause this AirRaid would be back and the defense could lean on the O!
by PBK on Nov 13, 2011 6:24 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Here Are My Thoughts
Kliff Kingsbury- HC and OC
Sonny Cumbie- Asst OC
or
Sonny Dykes-HC
Kliff Kingsbury-OC
And we hire Zach Thomas as a consultant and his job is teach the defense how to tackle…
Kingsbury would be a terrible call for a HC hire. He’s only been a full time coach for just under two seasons. I like him and think he’ll be good at some point, but not right now. At least not for a HC position. And he’s co-offensive coordinator, at that. Let him call the shots on his own for a year or two to prove he can truly handle it before a jump from mid-major to BCS.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
HC Kevin Sumlin
OC Chris Thompsen

by Red and Black 71 on Nov 13, 2011 9:14 PM CST reply actions
The lineup we SHOULD do (both good AND realistic):
HC – (Choices in order) 1. Chris Petersen, this one might NOT be realistic, but I figure we should at least take the shot
2. Brent Venables, leads a strong team and probably hungry to prove he can HC, plus last pull from the Stoops tree worked out pretty well.
3. Kevin Sumlin, debatably #2 choice, but questionable if he wants to leave Houston and would prefer to let the OC (see below) run the offense.
OC – Mason Miller, current OC for the McMurry Indians (so he knows west Texas), which is the current coaching gig for Hal Mumme (Leach’s mentor). Prior to last year, McMurry’s last winning season was 2000, in 2010 they went 7 – 4, in 2011 McMurry is currently 8 – 2. (Mumme took over in 2009 btw)
DC – Chuck Heater, Heater has coached teams in 23 bowl games, including the 2007 and 2009 BCS National Championship Games. Heater was “recruiting coordinator” and an asst at Colorado in the mid-late 90s, when Colorado was consistently ranked. He went with Neiheisel to Washington, when Washington was ranked. In 2004 he joined Urban Meyer in Utah and followed Meyer to Florida. In 2011 he became the DC of Temple, Temple is currently ranked 13th in total defense for FBS teams (2nd among non-BCS conference schools).
Chris Peterson's a nice thought
but he’s been #1 on the Most Wanted list for every big time vacancy for several years now and I suspect he’s had Brinks trucks bigger than ours backed up on his lawn. It’s pretty clear that he has a personal stake in staying at Boise St.

Hal Mumme is a great coach. McMurry has been historically awful and this year they get a playoff bid.

To Hire you must first FIRE.............
those that we already know. Then I’d humble myself to the highest level
and crawl on my belly like a snake to to florida keys and beg leach. with
emphasis on beggin. Its worth a try.
DC — would be the mystery chick!
BTW...
I saw that ESPN docu-film “Roll Tide/War Eagle” tonight (taped it). Really neat film about that Bama/Auburn rivalry, and all the weirdness surrounding it. When Tubs (in Auburn regalia) appeared on the screen, I instinctively shot him the bird! Think I’ll try to make my own t-shirt—since Campus Design won’t do one—saying “I’m tired of Tuberville.” Remember actually buying a “Dump Dockery” shirt AT THE GAME back in 1980. Guess we’re back at square one now.
BTW, there some majorly WEIRD folks involved in that Bama/Auburn rivalry. Listen to that Alabama sports radio show—oh brother! Sounds like “Friday Night Wrestling” in Dogpatch! The Aggies will fit in just fine. As far as that crazy Bama fan that poisoned the Toomer’s Trees grove, how did that idiot get to be a DPS trooper in Texas? Good grief, they must have a hard time getting help.
An offensive guru that’s a bit over-looked right now, but won’t be for long, Clemson’s Chad Morris. Also has deep ties to Texas high school. This would be a perfect fit (although I’m not expecting Tuberville to be fired).
http://www.clemsontigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/morris_chad00.html
And if you’re wondering about how his offense is doing:
http://web1.ncaa.org/football/exec/rankingSummary?org=147&year=2011&week=11
The only downside is that he graduated from TAMU, but I’m willing to overlook that.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
wmy top two choices are
1. Gus Malzahn. currently OC at Auburn.
During the 2007 season Malzahn emerged as one of the premier offensive coordinators in the nation, as Tulsa ranked 1st in the nation in total yards per game, ahead of Texas Tech and Hawaiʻi, and with a more balanced attack than both teams.4 The Golden Hurricane also ranked 3rd in the nation in passing5 and led their conference in scoring. Tulsa became the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and three 1,000-yard receivers in a single season.67
After the regular season, Malzahn interviewed for the open position at Arkansas once Nutt resigned in November 2007.8
“In 2008, Tulsa was again the nation’s most prolific attack, leading with nearly 7,980 total yards of offense averaging 570 yards per game.9 The Golden Hurricane were ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring behind Oklahoma, scoring over 47 points per game.10 Tulsa not only ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring that year, but finished with the 2nd highest scoring offense in the history of major college football. The offense was also the nation’s most balanced attack, ranking 5th in the nation in rushing11 and 9th in passing.12 The Tulsa quarterbacks finished 3rd in the nation in passing efficiency, behind only Oklahoma and Texas.”
2. Larry Fedora current HC at Southern Miss
Fedora played wide receiver at Austin College before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant there in 1986. He spent four seasons as head coach at Garland High School, a powerhouse in Texas high school football, but then returned to the collegiate ranks, coaching tight ends, wide receivers and running backs for six seasons (1991–96) at Baylor. Fedora moved on to coach the passing game and receivers at United States Air Force Academy from 1997–98, before he became offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State University in 1999. In 2002, he was hired by Ron Zook to join his coaching staff at the University of Florida. Fedora served as run game coordinator in 2002, perimeter game coordinator in 2003 and offensive coordinator in 2004. During those three seasons, Fedora also coached the running backs and receivers.
In 2005, Fedora joined Mike Gundy’s staff at Oklahoma State. His brother, Lee Fedora, serves as head coach at Navasota High School in Navasota, Texas. His other brothers John Fedora and Bruce Fedora live in College Station and Austin.
As one of the most prolific offensive strategists in college football, Fedora drew several assistant coaching offers from top-tier schools including LSU and Alabama as well as some head coaching offers including Rice and Air Force.2 Earning $393,000 a year at Oklahoma State, Fedora was one of the top paid offensive coordinators in the country. In November 2007, Fedora was rumored to be a candidate for the then-vacant head coaching job at Baylor University, that eventually went to Art Briles.3
I was intrigued with Malzan
Not sure I still am.

Hire me...
I am unknown, but I know what I am capable of. And that simple fact makes me very dangerous. Mike Leach knows what he was capable of. His only issue was that he wasn’t as diligent with defense (and trust me, there is an ultimate defense just like a ultimate air raid offense… you just have to know how to use it).
Hire me.
DG
Rich Rodriguez
He can be both HC & OC. Can use the smaller, speedy recruits at the skill positions and Brewer could work his system as a dual threat.
He was never a fit at Michigan because of the Michigan Man crap and his recruits are still playing effectively despite changing to a more pro-style offense under Hoke.
He has never been able to recruit Texas due to geography, but he can make the 3 stars & 4 stars play up. We need someone that recognizes the deficiencies in recruiting against OU & Texas and will coach his players up.
Mike Martz
I would like to see Mike Martz as OC and HC. He of the “Greatest Show on Turf” St. Louis Rams fame. He would definitely keep a vertical, pass first offense alive at Tech. He’s currently the OC of the Chicago Bears, and I don’t know if he has any ties whatsoever to the state of Texas. Just imagine him walking into a recruits’ home flashing a Super Bowl ring on his finger (‘99 as OC with St. Louis) and spouting out names like Faulk, Warner, etc. Of course, it would take some money to make this happen, and there would probably be constant talk/rumors of him going back to the NFL when any openings happen to arise. I think it’d be interesting to see what he could do with his offense at the college level.
