DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-11-02

I hope that yesterday's post was somewhat therapeutic. I don't know that it was, but I hope that it was. We'll get to some game things tomorrow, but as I said yesterday, I had gone almost a year and a half without talking about Adam James and ignoring the topic altogether. That didn't seem to work so I thought that trying to have a reasoned discussion about the issues was something that would be helpful.

Absolutely love these.
The Forde-Yard Dash: Pat joins the Yahoo! party - College Football - Rivals.com
Interesting in that Pat Forde has moved to Yahoo! Sports. Remember that Forde (I think) noted the problems with the Longhorn Network and ESPN relationship earlier this year:
The Longhorns' steady diet of me-first has left them bloated and indifferent to the feelings of their peers. You can't blame athletic director DeLoss Dodds for capitalizing on his program's abundant successes and rampant popularity, but there has to be some concern for everyone else.
Rubbing your superiority in their faces has been a factor in the departure of 25 percent of the Big 12 over the past year-plus. (And we still don't know for sure what Missouri, itself a fickle and flirtatious corporate partner for over a year, intends to do.) If everyone keeps leaving you, don't you eventually have to look in the mirror and acknowledge that you're part of the problem?
And now, he's no longer employed by ESPN.

TEXAS TECH BASEBALL
Texas Tech Names Tim Tadlock Associate Head Baseball Coach - Texas Tech Red Raiders Official Athletic Site and Red Raider Baseball Blog and Tech hires Tadlock from Oklahoma baseball program | Red Raiders and Former Red Raider named associate head baseball coach - The Daily Toreador: Sports
It's officially official as Texas Tech named OU recruiting coordinator Tim Tadlock, associate head coach at Texas Tech. Here's Tadlock from the LAJ article:
"I think everybody wants a challenge in life," said Tadlock, who played at Tech during the 1990 and 1991 seasons. "I want to grow every day and get better. I just feel like there’s really a lot of room for growth here and we’re ready to take off.
"More than anything else one reason (for the move) is (head coach Dan) Spencer and (athletic director) Kirby Hocutt reaching out and asking me to come back, meant a lot. It’s easy to see that Kirby is trying to change the culture out here in Lubbock and within the athletic department."

The first men's exhibition is scheduled for Thurs. Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. against Southwestern Oklahoma, and the first home women's exhibition is set for Nov. 6 against Metro State at 2 p.m. The men's team will also play host to Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game.
Gillispie lauds diverse talents of assistant coaching staff | Red Raiders
Lots of good quotes here about the coaching staff that head coach Billy Gillispie has hired. Up first, Chris Walker:
"He wants to be the lead guy on academics, the lead guy on scouting, the lead guy on recruiting," Gillispie said. "Not at the expense of others, but because he wants to be involved in everything, and he has so much energy and passion for it. Our philosophies have been 100 percent (in sync)."
Jeff Kidder:
"He's the most tireless junior-college recruiter I've ever seen," Gillispie said of Kidder. "I mean he goes after it. That's no disrespect to anybody else, but he's had a great deal of success."
Bubba Jennings:
"He's so important to our success," Gillispie said. "There's so many different people you come across in your lifetime, in every different profession, and every single time you talk to them, you know they have a great deal of wisdom. And how do you define wisdom? It's a hard word to describe, but you know it when you see it. Bubba has a great deal of wisdom.
"He's great with the players, and they have a great deal of confidence in him. When I get tough on them, they go to (Jennings), and he's able to say the right word at the right time. I guess that's what wisdom is."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
Red Raiders football notebook: Getting well | Red Raiders and Notebook: Tuberville talks Tech CB situation, preparation for Longhorns - The Daily Toreador: Sports
Pretty interesting movement in the Texas Tech secondary, from the LAJ:
At the end of Tuesday’s practice, Neboh and Jarvis Phillips were working as a cornerback tandem and Derrick Mays was paired with Sawyer Vest in another. Recently converted wide receiver Shawn Corker also has been discussed as a potential starting candidate this week.
Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said the staff briefly considered giving inside receiver Cornelius Douglas time again at cornerback. Douglas was a two-way player last season, filling in at times for a few snaps at cornerback.
Flannel makes most of shot vs. ISU | Red Raiders
Nice story on SS Jared Flannel, who has been an excellent special teams play, is now getting his shot at strong safety with Terrance Bullitt out for a couple of games. Here's Flannel:
"You’ve got to be ready at all times and take advantage of every opportunity you’ve got," Flannel said. "Right now, I probably have the opportunity so I’m staying focused like I have been, and now that I’ve got it, going out there and giving everything I have, sacrificing for the team."

Thanks Seth................for putting up with us.
Yesterday’s viaral thread was somewhat theraputic, but if nothing else it lets a good number of us vent. Venting sometimes clears the mind to be able to think about other things.
One of the things that keeps haunting me is the University’s lack of acknowledgement of the Leach era. Although I understand the “feelings” side of things between the admin and Leach, I wonder about the kids that played during that time. On occasion I have had the previlege of attending the Hall of Fame/Honor banquet. I have seen that nearly all of the former coaches have been inducted into the Hal of Honor. I see throughout the years that there are various reunions for teams of a particular coach. For example last week was the reunion for the teams that played for JT King. I believe that the teams that played for Spike will have theirs during the OSU game, but I may be mistaken.
So I just wonder what is to become of the teams that played for Leach? Will they just have to meet at the mall? Will they just have to email and text about “their days”?
Perhaps time heals all wounds, but I think the University needs to lead in this regard and at least show credit where credit is due.
By the way, can’t wait for roundball.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I'll echo the thanks to Seth on allowing and cultivating the discourse in general.
Lots of different people, lots of different dispositions.
In regard to honoring Leach/his teams, it is another of the unanticipated results that the admin is dealing with as a result of their poor decision making. It will happen eventually, because it is in the best interest of the football program to showcase that success. In meantime, there are lawsuits and I am certain all legal advise points to not honoring the man you are accusing of abuse. That’s their story and they are sticking to it, so to speak. Once the law suits are gone I would suspect that his legacy will begin to creep into view on campus. No fanfare probably, because Hance and co will likely still be around at that time, but the stone wall will likely slowly begin to come down at that point. It is unfortunate.

If you have not had a chance to hear the Leach interview with Torres after the OU victory on cbssports, you need to.
I heared it live, and Leach was so proud of Torres and Doege. His enthusiasm was contagioius, and it was we and we and we and more Tech. I think it was somewhat theraputic for even Leach.
I wrote a letter to Hance, Bailey and Holcutt asking them to please put this to bed. I even gave them the link to cbssports so they could listen to it. Of course, I have had not response except from Joe Parker, who I think is the associate AD, who asked me to hand in there.
Time to start thinking about wrestling some steers.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I haven't yet, I'll have to listen to that.
It is a shame that this has to run it’s course this way, but life goes on.
I’ll be at the UT game in the second row on the 20 yard line – surrounded by horns. Hoping like crazy that the team shows up. My longhorn friends tailgate spot is only a block from the Tech lot so I plan on dropping in for a meet and greet. After a michelada or two and few toddies, of course.

I can think of little more than would make me happy
than to see the admin make a negotiation that would resolve the litigation and provide reasonable compensation (whatever is negotiated) to Mike Leach.

One point Dunka
I am certain all legal advise points to not honoring the man you are accusing of abuse.
I don’t think there is anyone anywhere accusing Leach of abuse. Those false charges have long been put to bed. No need to go into detail, but not even #82 still claims that he was ever locked anywhere.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
And .......
I guess I was not too clear, earlier……………there are two different entities involved. One – the Universtiy and two – the DoubleT Association. I’m not clear just how associated with the university the DTA is, but they do have some sort of relationship. The DTA runs and executes the Hall of Fame and Hall of Honor. The Universtiy and Red Raider Club are more closely related.

My bad. I thought they were still keeping that premise as part of their defense.

I’m sure we can be real pains in the ass at times, so thanks to Seth for putting up with us (especially since he’s probably losing some sleep being a dad now).
As far as the reference to the references to Leach happening eventually, in a way it’s already happening. If you’ve noticed, the game programs feature a listing (with coach’s pictures) of the all-time win leaders in Tech history. Leach’s picture is next to Tub’s—oh the irony!

As far as Hance goes...
Dunka, I like your reference to “when the stone wall will come down” as far as Hance and Co and how long their regime will last. We’ll see changes eventually. If the Communist empire in eastern Europe and the Berlin Wall can fall, so will Hance’s empire!

"Odds are its something simple" - @Coach_Leach
Wow, blackbeard, you're full of surprises!
I had not considered the impact on teams who played during Leach’s tenure. They certainly deserve the same honor, privilege and recognition as all other teams over the years.
Could not agree more on two other points:
Huge thanks to Seth for patiently putting up with those of us with strong & passionate views on such a controversial issue.
The administration’s refusal to acknowledge Leach’s significant contribution to the football program, university and city of Lubbock is one of the issues that is hardest for me to move past.
Thanks for the thoughtful post, blackbeard!
Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says, "oh crap, she's up".
i honestly think once all the lawsuits are finished and this thing is totally
and completely put to bed…and some time has passed…that TTU will slowly and quietly begin re-acknowledging Leach’s contributions. But with all the legal stuff being sorted out, it’s probably their position to just ignore all that until it’s done.
Thank you for sharing this information, I didn't realize that we did that, it is pretty special, IMHO.
I see throughout the years that there are various reunions for teams of a particular coach. For example last week was the reunion for the teams that played for JT King. I believe that the teams that played for Spike will have theirs during the OSU game,
Regarding Mike Leach’s teams, it is kind of muddy currently.
While I think it possible, it is at least difficult and perhaps awkward, to do that kind of honor that involves a coach who is currently pursuing litigation. Someday, and hopefully soon, that will end. Perhaps then we can get on with doing the good stuff for everyone.

We had a player named Happiness. Had to look it up to see if I could find the back story. Many of you may already know this but for those who don’t:
Apparently his given name is Junior Osunde. Found this information on a blog for the U of MN blog – he was going there until legal issues kept him in TX according to their site.
Best post: If he played offense, everyone would be in pursuit of Happiness.

Thank you Seth for allowing the banter yesterday. I know it did wonders for me and I was even able to muster up some comedic relief towards the end of yesterday about a topic that in the past could literally elevate my blood pressure to dangerous levels. Thanks for putting up with us and especially for putting up with those of us, me especially, who bring very opinionated thoughts/comments into the discussion. Those comments can be very shocking to some but I do think it helps all of us to just get them out in the open and discuss them.
TTU '04 - I thought it was me that had gone crazy, not the herd.
I was so full of hope before the ISU game and sooooo loooowww after that I was depressed. I mean literally felt bad, got real quiet, could not relax, just felt terrible for three days. I just had these Walt Disney dreams about success for my beloved alma mater. This season in particular is breaking my heart. But, I am feeling better now, getting over it sslooowwly. A win or even a good performance full of passion this week would do me good.
My passion waxes and wanes with that shown on the field by the team. Been that way for over 40 years now. Does not seem to matter who the coach or players are. I thought Donny Anderson would never let us lose a game. Or Rodney Allison. But I’ll be back in the stands or in front of the TV or the computer next Saturday, and the next, and… (a quiet "wreck’em).
At this point I think gone crazy is an understatement
Like you I’ll be in front of the TV this saturday but with much less excitement. I’ve come to grips with the fact that we have a lot of work left to be done to be a serious contender but that’s fine. Too much more going on in the world that’s more important than to get so wrapped up in it. Hopefully one day the fire will be back but I’m taking a step back for now.

If you are a journalist in Lubbock, would you do an interview this week with Kent and ask if there is extra pressure to beat UT since he specifically stated that is what this coach is here for?
I don’t think I would needle Tubs for that, it wasn’t him that said it…..but you would think a journalist would at least pose the question….right?
