Offense
I admit the past 3 weeks have been too painful to spend much time watching the Raiders . I broke my self imposed exile and watched the later part of the Missouri game . The main thing that really jumped out to me other then we still have no defense, was the apparent loss of arm strength by QB Seth Doege . It appears that he has for whatever reason lost his velocity and zip on his passes. He seems to have to wind up to throw and his out route passes float out to the receiver . Is he hurt ? Is his arm is used up and he is now a rag arm ? I think it has been a big factor in his so called loss of confidence ! I also spoke with a friend who went down on the field at Missouri and he said it was pathetic , the seams were uneven not level , and it had creases where you would trip , or blow a knee ! Guess the SEC standards will kill that, one year too late for our blown knees !!

This happens to all of our qbs...
go back and watch Harrell in ’06 and ’07. Even Potts lost some zip with time. The only QB I can remember whose arm was big enough to throw it 60 times a game for a whole season was BJ.
The good news is that Harrell got it together in ’08. I think a lot of it was him learning to manage the pace of the game… resting by checking to the run now and then… slowing the pace when he needed to give his arm a rest. This is yet another reason that the NASCAR pace is stupid. Slow down… let Doege take a break now and then.
I remember our old coach commenting one time
that the QB’s arms were dead by the end of the season, so he made an adjustment. Rather than have the first string guy take 2/3 of the practice snaps and throw about 300 balls each practice, he dialed it back and let the second stringer take about 50% of the practice snaps and they each ended up throwing about 200 balls per practice.
The next year there was a noticeable improvement late in the season, plus the second stringer really became a 1A guy versus a true number two with all the additional reps.

I think Doege is frustrated beyond belief. The metal side of this game has probably effected his play.

Totally agree.
I think he is scared of screwing up and throwing it to the wrong place, then having Tubs jump on him. Not good.

If true then it is time to put someone else in at QB. They interviewed Stephen McGee of Cowboy third string fame and he said that he was just out there trying not to make a mistake. With that mindset, I would have cut McGee the next day if not sooner.

I dont know, I watched the whole game on Saturday and I don’t think he played bad at all. Receivers weren’t getting open, especially down the field. Moore looked kinda slow, and had to push off a lot. The last play was a bad decision on Doege’s part but I think he had a solid game. Also it doesn’t help that seemingly half of our offense got hurt during the game. Torres being out is going to be devastating I think. Just my two cents. Probably no one cares.
I did however get frustrated at the conservative play calling once we got ahead. Man, that kills me.

I agree that he did have a good game against Missouri. Lots of things about this offense that could be disected and hopefully the offseason makes way for some of that. Moore is slow getting down field and aside from Torres we really don’t have any solid playmakers receiving the ball. Hopefully Ward and Marquez can continue to develop as I think these 2 will be dependable moving forward. Marquez’s stock will rise as he matures to the college game.

Marquez is something else, a quickness and power thats unbelievable I guess thats why he is already a professional athelete

Moore got involved in some kind of pissin contest, not sure how that DB got in his head but Moore wanted to kill that guy and catching the ball was secondary

There was speculation here earlier
that Doege had injured his arm, maybe in that flying TD run vs Iowa St. If it was true, it was a well-kept secret.

Maybe he is not cut out for this.
Not all the blame rests on Doege. I do feel like there is something missing from our blame. There is not just one item that is the reason we are not very good. There are many, but I feel like I am missing something. I feel like there is some unseen force that is making us bad. Does anyone feel like something does not add up? That there are other reasons we are bad than just the execution on offense and defense?
Karma?
The footbaw gods are so angry at the Bell Tower that the bad karma just overflows to the team?
I know what you mean. Something just hasn’t been right. I would dearly love to be a fly on the wall inside the locker room or inside those player-only meetings.

Seen lots of chatter about Brewer being the next great QB hope in our lineage or great next biggest thing dating back to Robert Johnson

This spring with Brewer.
Brewer greaded out in the Spring and Fall better than Doege, but he is a true freshman. Brewer will have two springs and one fall under his belt. He should be ready.
I wish that Tommy would play Scotty against Baylor. I want to see what he can do before we just hand it to Brewer.

I saw bad play on Doege's part
I notice several time where he failed to see the open receiver. It was even pointed out by the annoucers. I also thought his intentional grounding play, which put us way back, was a very bad play. He should know how to get rid of the ball w/o that. Also, (it was a screen play-the intentional gounding play) the running back was sitting right in the middle with three lineman with one defender around on that play. I think he is playing timidly, thus a symptom of lack of confidence.

this has been a very noticable problem.
While trying to stayy awake during the ISU game, Eric Ward was man up with a CB
that was at least 5 inches shorter. ANY AA high school coach would have taken
advantage of that mismatch allllll night long. But no! I saw ward with 3 bubbles sceens.
Could have been more but like I said, staying awake was tough that night. So with
that said, I now wonder that maybe doege may not be allowed to audible. It’s baffling,
to say the least.
