WVU aiming for 2012 start in Big 12, despite Big East's lawsuit - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com
This is funny, at least to me, as Neinas is mad (you mad bro?) at Missouri at the way that they left, but I'm guessing that he's welcoming West Virginia with open arms.

Congrats to Rose on her second All-American designation. Tanui finished in the top 10 last year, so I'd guess she's a bit disappointed, but still quite a honor to be competing for a national championship.

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
Press Conference | Head Coach Tommy Tuberville & QB Seth Doege
I don't have time to have a separate post on yesterday's press conference. You can find plenty of things to discuss today if you want to take a look. I thought it was interesting that Tuberville talked openly about recruiting another running back and two junior college cornerbacks. I posted about one JUCO cornerback last week, but there's apparently another corner that will get an offer. Tuberville also talks about having a defensive back come in to the program in January and I'd guess that it's DB Thierry Nguema (DTN recruiting profile). I still wouldn't be at all surprised to see to JUCO cornerbacks, a couple of JUCO defensive linemen, a JUCO offensive lineman and maybe a JUCO tight end? I hadn't thought about it, but I would think that there would be a tight end in this class, JUCO or freshman.
More stuff after the jump.
Stephens scheduled for surgery, braces for long rehab | Red Raiders
This is depressing, RB Eric Stephens doesn't have surgery until today as his knee was messed up enough that it required him to wait six weeks, which means that his rehabilitation could last until next year. Stephens could redshirt, but I'm guessing he wants to get out on the field. Bah.
Washington, Torres, Edwards all suffer knee injuries at Missouri | Red Raiders
Still waiting on the results for RB DeAndre Washington, WR Alex Torres and LG Lonnie Edwards. RB Aaron Crawford is also injured his ankle ,but he's a warrior:
"I’ve had worse," said Crawford, who was wearing a boot on his right foot. "I’ve been in worse situations. I wouldn’t say there’s any pressure. But if I can move I’m going to play and not leave anybody out to dry. I’m going to give it my all."
Red Raiders football notebook: Tech disputes Byrne claim | Red Raiders
So remember last week when I had that FanShot about how TAMU AD Bill Byrne said that UT threatened Texas Tech about a game being on television? Texas Tech spokesperson, Blayne Beal says that's bullsh:
"ESPN presented a plan," Beal said. "We reviewed it and decided against it."
Okay.
The move to cornerback for Cornelius Douglas is permanent and I would agree with Tuberville on his assessment of Douglas' play:
"I thought Cornelius made us a better football team, even though he’s just been over there a short period of time," Tuberville said. "Just his knowledge of football. Sometimes with our corners, we have struggled just playing with a lot of football knowledge."
Williams: Tech bowl game doesn't seem likely | Red Raiders and Reeling Red Raiders need 1 more win for bowl eligibility - The Daily Toreador: Sports

Neinas is a hypocritical fool
bitched about Mizzou leaving us in a lurch but likely pressured WVU to file suit to leave Big East in a lurch.
potentially leaving us with 9 teams and below out tv contract obligation rather than worked harder to get us BYU which could have played in 2012.
and is pushing us to stay at 9.5 rather than back to 12 or even go to 14 by 2014.
when i look at it all, he is no better than bebee, A&M still gone. Mizzou left under Neinas watch. TCU would have joined no matter what. WVU, Louisville, and Cincinnati would sign with us regardless of who is commissioner. we are no better off with him than bebee.
How about - Neinas has made foolish moves which smack of hypocrisy?
Adjectives are associated with the actions rather than the man himself. Acceptable?

I would love to hear the true story on why things didn’t work out with BYU. Everything seemed to fit perfectly for both parties and thin it all kind of dissolved. The playing on Sunday thing couldn’t have been that big of a stumbling block, could it?

I think Coach is under too much pressure not to bring in a bunch of JUCO guys. Even Thou he said he wouldn’t bring more than a couple. I bet we see 4 or 5 next year. Its good to hear he is bringing in CBs, especially knowing they will come in for spring camp. That’s a good thing.
Im happy to see Corn Dog is staying on Defense, we could use him.
JUCO...
I was told 2 weeks ago by the staff that Coach Prunty was given the green light to go after much needed JUCO players. Expect some big announcements prior to signing day.

I really hate being such a downer but ...
it won’t matter who they bring in, how fast they run or how quick they are. Even if they had a full team of players, the play calling, attitude, and adjustments aren’t there. If Tubs keeps his job, I suspect the next year is going to be as long as this year.
In the last two years we are 5-11 against Big 12 competition. Really? Who jacked my sweet ride?

Wasn’t it about 2 weeks ago that Tuberville made it a point to discuss not recruiting JUCO guys? Said he wanted guys in the program for 5 years, etc…

I think TallMike elaborated last week and said that Tuberville would like to have a couple of JUCO’s in each class, which is standard. He had a couple last year, Wesley, Mackey and Kennard (I think that was it. But I’m guessing that a couple may turn into a handful as I think he knows that he needs immediate help. The OL graduates 3 players (Edwards, Keown and Okafor) and I think that there and along the DL he’s going to need some additional bodies to go along with some reinforcements in the secondary.

One other thing, and this is a guess on my part, but since he said that he wants another running back, does anyone else thing that this may mean that Ronnie Daniels is on thin ice? I don’t know what Daniels did, but I hope he can get back on track.

So drinking yourself stupid
and to the point of puking is ok but smoking some pot is off limits. If he was suspended all season for smoking pot then thats just ridiculous. Self rightous dooshbaggery.
I wouldn't jump to conclusions
He was suspended for one game, played the next week, and was immediately re-suspended. Take that for what you will, but giving people second chances but dealing severely with repeat offenders is anything but self-righteous behavior

Attitude toward JUCO recruits...
I think our attitude toward JUCO recruits should depend on our optimism/pessimism about Tuberville’s longterm prognosis. If Tubby is going to be here fro the next three years, then I’m okay with bringing in JUCO players. Mackey, Wesley, and Kennard all contributed this year. Imaging how much help we could get from a couple of JUCO DBs or LBs who are of the same caliber as those guys.
However, if there is a very real chance that Tuberville gets fired after a poor showing in 2012, then JUCOs are definitely OUT. If there were some who thought Leach left the cubbard bare in 2009, imagine what this team will look like after the 2012 season if he brings in 4-5 JUCOs this offseason who get significant playing time in 2012. There will simply be nothing left to build on.
I do not like JUCO OLs under any circumstances. OL is the most mental position in the game, and those guys need 2-3 years just to learn the system… and JUCO players are often JUCO players because they’re not that bright.
I'd say he's not so much on thin ice
as floating in very cold water. With Stephens back, Washington back, and Williams hopefully developing some more power in the offseason, I presume Daniels will need to make some pretty big leaps forward in the character department to make it back on the field.

I am looking at Daniels in the same context as we saw with Smith.
We really won’t know until a coach says he will be back whenever.
Like Smith we don’t really know much, although there is a lot of rumor with Daniels. Whether he comes back likely depends on him, how he manages himself opposite whatever it was that got him in a crack with the staff. So it one sense it is until whenever as the shortest time and on the other hand, if he messes up, it is forever that he will not play TTU football.

If he gets into much more trouble
I see him transferring to a program that will let him play regardless

You are on to something. That was OSU right?
I think some things went on that weekend. That was the weekend of the Dallas delegation(s) showing up. I wonder what else was decided or put into motion?
I remember a press conference like that too, and he made a pretty weak case against the JUCO guys in it. Just strange.
You can plan for 5 years when you think you have 5 years
He must have been given a signal that somebody else will be coaching his recruits in 2015 if this year & next don’t get any better.

It was recently that he talked about that.
Then we saw all these guys get injured and who are scheduled for surgery…about 8 of them total…that ought to make one consider changing a plan.

A page from Coach Snyder at KSU?
If I recall coreectly, the use of JUCO players by Synder when he came back was a key ingredient in KSU development of the program.
Just another example of Synder being a superior coach to Coach Tuberville.
Sometimes JUCO players can work out wonderfully, and sometimes it can cripple a defense. See TTU’s 2008 recruiting class where there were 4 JUCO’s signed (Jarrell Routt, McKinner Dixon, Brandon Sesay and Broderick Marshall). I don’t think Marshall played a down, Dixon and Sesay each played 1 season and Routt never contributed. When it works out, it’s great, but when it doesn’t it can be downright awful.
Go Raiders . . .

i guess it all depends on the caliber of JUCO players.
I recall Mackey and Kennard were the top JUCO players at the time.

Dixon actually played two years with Tech, if I recall...
wasn’t he a Big XII all-freshman teamer with us before leaving for a sophomore season as a JUCO… and then coming back as a junior… and then going away again as a senior?

Dixon was a guy Tech recruited out of high school
he played in ‘05 but quickly became an academic casualty, managed to get back and play all of ’08, then played maybe a game or two in 09 before falling back into his old ways. In that sense he’s not your typical JUCO guy, but in general I agree, with the JUCO route you can get a lot of talent and experience quickly, but you’re also inviting a lot of character issues into your locker room as there’s usually a reason why a talented player went JUCO.

I would think
that the use and selection of JUCO players could also be a function of the effectiveness of the head coach and his coaching staff.
Therein lies our dilemma. The effective and successful utilization of the players a coach elects to bring into the program.
But you’re correct in that the use of JUCO players is a crap shoot.

The DT article about Baylor and the bowl isn't bad.
Straight football, no switchblades. That’s refreshing.
They can sometimes be a little imaginative over there.
Even though we're currently a doormat
I sure hope Tech is working on getting that Thanksgiving game with Texas. Might as well fill the void left by A&M. Personally, I’m not big on a Thanksgiving Day game (probably wouldn’t ever attend), but this just makes good business sense. Would be a shame to let this game go to new baby brother, TCU.
Injuries – There has been a lot of discussion about the reasons for so many injuries (poor S&C, bad luck, bad turf, etc.) I have no answers. I just hope the staff takes a close look at this during the off-season (like any other phase of the game) and implements plans to improve whatever aspects they can control. No excuses, but injuries have had an impact on this season.
Not just us on injuries
I haven’t been keeping any kind of tally, but it seems every day I see something about other teams losing players. Fozzy last week, Gray and Michael now gone for fishbait, OU losing their WR and RB studs, etc. Fishbait will be playing a soph and a freshman with less than one game’s experience at RB against UT. But we do seem to have suffered more than most.
We seem to be everyone’s first choice to replace fishbait – UT on turkey day and a Dallas game for Arkansas.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
I tend to think Tech and UT on Thanksgiving is a somewhat done deal. Both teams make for a good rivalry and I’m fairly sure Hocutt has pushed for that game during all the realighnment discussions.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
I agree, but...
The game will be a total bust. Longhorns are already bitching about it thinking we’re not “worthy” of their time on Thanksgiving (ie. they’re likely not gonna show up for it, good job leveraging that UT game for ticket Hance) and if Tuberville stays on course, then the Tech fanbase will be so apathetic that no Red Raiders will want to skip time with family to be at the game either.
All good points
I suspect Tech fans will show up but that’s soley based on our ability to be competitive. A performance like this year isn’t going to build excitement around that game. A Leach team and you would have had to bring in extra seating. Tech’s alure is way down and I can see why UT has concerns. I have concerns. I tend to think it’s going to be set on trial basis to see how well it goes. Bottom line is Tuberville’s performance as Tech’s coach is damaging and leaves a great deal of unknowns moving forward which isn’t good.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Long term damage
If another team gets into that slot, we could be hurt well after TT goes back to the catfish farm.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
If Jones Stadium is half filled the 1st time it's played in Lubbock, there won't be a long term
Texas & ESPN will find another team. Aggies/UT made sense because the same people who are used to giving up Thanksgiving Day with their families to attend a football game could go each year since the stadiums are only a couple hours apart. Central Texans aren’t travelling to Lubbock on Thanksgiving Day. Most Tech season ticket holders from outside West Texas will probably no-show too. I think it’s impractical for the Tech/UT series. And it’s going to kill the Lubbock business community if they get zero boost from the UT game every other year.

hahaha... wow
If there was ANY doubt that Tuberville hates the pass (and I know there is very little if any here), this quote from Tuberville on one of Seth’s links is great:
"He absolutely beat one of the better teams in the country by himself — up and down the field, taking advantage, running the ball. I’m sure they kind of grimaced when he threw that ball right there at the end 50 yards down the field to the corner on a perfect strike. I know when he let it go I’m thinking, ‘This thing could be intercepted, and they still have a chance for a field goal.’ But what a throw."
I like how he specifically points out Griffin’s “taking advantage, running the ball”, and how risky the pass was. I beat he’d swap out two receivers at Baylor for two lead blockers and have the PERFECT Baylor option team. (-_-)
Well, it's no "Three things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad"
but I definitely think Tuberville looks at a player like RGIII and thinks about what a fantastic running back he’d be if he’d gotten his hands on him

Just over on FootballScoop.com and this stuck me
Greg Mattison – University of Michigan
Greg Mattison has overseen a complete turnaround in the Michigan defense. Last season, Michigan’s defense ranked 108th in scoring defense, allowing an average of over 35 points per game…this season, they are ranked #8, allowing 16 points per game. Last season, they were 110th in total defense, this season #14. Michigan finished 7-6 last season, this year they are currently 9-2. Mattison’s defense is a big part of that turnaround.
Earlier today I was reading an interview new Lobos coach Bob Davie had with the local paper and found this insight particularly interesting:
Losing brings out the worst in everybody. Some kid sitting there that I’m gonna meet with, he may be a heck of a lot better player, better citizen, better person than he is right now. He’s just beaten down.
My intuition tells me there is a whole lot of something going on the field house.

Yep. Now I’m hearing it’s a rotation series among Tech, Baylor and TCU. Always based in Austin obviously.

Nothing concrete yet but it’s Deloss’s conference so I suspect it will stick. We’ll still have every other year against them in Lubbock but not on Thanksgiving is how I read it.

Ok cool, we want a big 12 game on labor day saturday every year at our place.
Baylor can have…… Halloween? TCU gets…..screw it they should just consider themselves lucky to be invited.
TTU should not touch any deal with anyone that is not on an equal basis.
I don’t care how much money they have.
If they want to play us on Thanksgiving, it is home and home, if they want to play in Dallas it is two back to back seasons.
If they don’t want to do this with us, let them have TCU, SMU, Texas State, someone in SEC maroon, anyone…

Guess Dodds thinks the UT franchise is kinda like the Dallas Cowboy franchise, look for the game to be on the LHN if you want to be included.
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

if it's on LHN
then ALL teams should say “no thanks”, I think any teams playing UT will get ZERO “publicity” bump for playing UT on LHN, and only get money bump if UT/ESPN pays out the nose. And honestly, even with our pathetic status atm, we should ALWAYS refuse to play on LHN just on principle.
Not for at least 6 years.

To replace A&M, Texas hopes to rotate Big 12 games at home. AD Deloss Dodds: "We want to play Thanksgiving night every year in our stadium."
Candidates would like include Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor. "It’s probably better if it’s somebody in-state, for travel," Dodds said.

It's still bullshit
Having a Thanksgiving game every year at a neutral site would be fine with me, they shouldn’t get their cake and eat it too. “But We’re Texas!!” “meh… Fuck Texas”

Tubby's Comment on the Baylor Game
“Both teams know exactly what we’re getting into,” Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. “This is not a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust conference. This is one where, hey, grab ahold and hold on.”
He sees the light, but wants darkness.
I saw that.
And really, I guess he’s talking about some other sport.

so the bookies are counting on us getting a safety?
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
the way our offense is playing (dare I say down right "Offensive.")
I’d take the under. Anyone honestly think this is a 56 – 49 game? If we get up big, we’ll run the ball and if Baylor gets up big, we’ll quit so even if they score 60, we don’t score 42.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
We’ll be scoring in 3 point increments only. I say one field goal every quarter so that leaves us at 12 points to their 90. That sounds about right for now.

I just checked some other services and the over/under is 77.5...sounds about right

Going after so many JUCOs makes me think the heat is on Tubberville
to get things fixed or else. He could be looking for immediate impact players to somehow salvage his job. He knows he will not survive a 5-7 or 6-6 season next year. He and the staff are in panic mode. Which is as it should be after 2 consecutive defenses ranked > 114th. He was hired to improve the defense.
He needs a fire lit under his ass. His laid back approach isn’t working.
