DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-11-23

I don't know how much you can expect out of me for the rest of the week.  I do have a post going up later today to preview the men's basketball team that tip-off in Orlando tomorrow at 11 am.  I'm sure that I'll post tomorrow, but I can't promise any sort of Baylor game preview other than RGIII is pretty good, you should watch out for him.

ODDS AND ENDS

"Guns Up" at Tech began as "Gun 'Em Down" 40 years ago | Red Raiders
Huh.  I had no idea it was the 40th anniversary of "Guns Up" or Gun 'Em Down.  Go check it out.

"…And It’s Good-Bye to A&M!" | Barking Carnival
BC runs down the history where fan violence has occurred when TAMU is involved, which includes the incident at Texas Tech.  The general theory is that there is large scale violence (relatively speaking), the Aggies always claim that it's not their fault and that the opposing team started it and they always lose the game.

RED RAIDER BASKETBALL

Tech freshman Jordan Tolbert making strides | Red Raiders
Quite a telling opening quote from Kosmider:

At a recent Texas Tech men’s basketball practice, 6-foot-7 freshman Jordan Tolbert came to a realization.

"I found out that I am not a good listener," he said. "I’m learning to listen. That is the hardest thing."

Tolbert said he was given an instruction by coach Billy Gillispie during a practice, but when the freshman was asked to repeat the order back "like five seconds later," he couldn’t find the answer.

What was Gillispie’s reaction?

"It was nice," Tolbert said, tongue firmly in cheek.

And head coach Billy Gillispie talks about Tolbert:

"He’s making progress, but he’s not anywhere near where he’s going to be," Gillispie said. "As far as Tolbert taking steps forward, he is taking steps. ... He’s got to anticipate the game a little bit better, and we all do."

I'd agree, Tolbert is just scratching the surface in terms of his potential.

Football links are after the jump, including a possible offer to a high school quarterback in . . . Mississippi.  That's a tease!

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL

Osunde, Douglas pushed into starting cornerback positions | Red Raiders
I'd agree with head coach Tommy Tuberville in that Happiness Osunde and Cornelius Douglas did play well last week, but Missouri isn't especially know to be a passing team.  I thought Douglas looked like he's been playing corner all season.  Still, Tuberville talks quite a bit about how Jarvis Phillips and Derrick Mays both lost confidence (they are both healthy), which is why they're not playing.  Here's Tuberville:

"We just went to the waiver wire. Picked up one that offense decided they could do without, picked up Osunde from scout team and said, ‘Let’s go boys.’"

Two weeks ago, coaches converted the 5-foot-9, 197-pound Douglas from inside receiver, where he had been the team’s fourth-leading receiver, and moved the 5-10, 185-pound Osunde from free safety, where he had been a little-used backup since the start of the year. He’s a walk-on transfer from Kilgore College.

"We had no choice," said Tuberville, whose team has allowed 21 touchdown passes, fourth-most in the Big 12. "I think it was pretty evident we just were absolutely playing awful at corner. We were just giving up too many big plays, and there was no consistency. The guys we had out there were shellshocked (from) all the big receivers they’d seen and played against."

Red Raiders football notebook: Washington, Torres have torn ACLs | Red Raiders
Six months of rehab for RB DeAndre Washington and WR Alex Torres with torn ACL's and LG Lonnie Edwards is still a bit up in the air, but at the least has a sprained knee.  Also having surgeries:

Running back Eric Stephens (knee dislocation), linebacker Zach Winbush (broken foot) and safety Chris Yeakey (knee ligament) underwent surgeries Tuesday.

A-Mays-ing | The Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com
I thought this was interesting.  Todd Mays is a quarterback in Olive Branch, Mississippi, and he says that Texas Tech is giving him strong attention as of late.  Mays is a dual-threat quarterback:

"He's not just some athlete playing quarterback, he's an athletic quarterback," said Madison Central defensive coordinator Todd Mangum. "He really poses a problem. If you flush him, he'll beat you with his legs and if you give him time, he'll pick you apart with his arm. He gains the attention of every defensive coordinator he's faced."

Snip.

For the season, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Mays has run for 1,031 yards and passed for 2,642 more. He is just the second player in school history to eclipse 1,000 yards on the ground and in the air, joining former Dandy Dozen star Anthony Summers in 2005.

You can check out Mays' Rivals, Scout and 247 profiles at the various links and the 247 link says that Mays already has an offer.  You can also watch some YouTube of his Olive Branch team.  I don't know what to make of the potential offer as Texas Tech already has a quarterback in Abilene Cooper's Clayton Nicholas plus athletes playing quarterback such as Snyder's Keenan Ward, Tenaha's Reginald Davis and Crockett's Dominique Wheeler.

Baylor game

I saw where BU has 3 CBs and a S on their injured list. Maybe we’ll have a chance to keep it close, but then again our coaches may see that as a chance to exploit the running game.

We’ll be at the game, mainly because we bought our tickets months ago and because it’s an annual gathering of old classmates. At the very least, I can always say I saw both Donny Anderson and RG III play in person. I saw him once before but he seems to be on fire this year.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand I’d like to see our bowl streak continue (at least the ‘bowl eligible’ streak). But that one extra win won’t take away the bad memories of this season. And a loss might speed up Tommy’s exit – Doubtful considering who makes the decisions, but we can dream, can’t we? Or should we stick to reality?

Did Tuberville say that we need ball control and that we need to win the time of possession battle? No, well maybe next year.

No defenses

Baylor is almost as bad as Tech on defense, so we should score 30+ on these jokers. It won’t be enough to win, but maybe we can keep it interesting for awhile. If we don’t move the ball AND score I’m sure it will be blamed on injuries and the “weather” conditions inside Jerry World. Seriously, Tech may actually show up and play well.

No question...based on recent performances,

Baylor is trending positive and Tech looks DOA. My heart says Tech will show up and play well, but my head says otherwise. If Baylor beats the snot of us, maybe it will be the end of Flubberville. But if the same Baylor team that almost lost to Kansas shows up, Tech might win and win decisively…then Tubs is off the hook for awhile.

I don't see how Tommy is every gonig to be off the hook;

We can’t recruit enough players to be bettter next year. This personnel on this team tries real hard, but they just aren’t very good. So, the baseline is second to last in the Big 12. And if Kansas gets their act together next year, we could be dead last.

by Btech on Nov 23, 2011 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

Good point...

If he needs to win 7 or 8 games next year to keep his job, then he might as well leave now. Who are they going to beat? Probably Kansas, maybe Baylor.
OSU will be down, but we play them at Stillwater. OU and Texas even in Lubbock, not likely wins. ISU in Ames..iffy. TCU probably in Fort Worth…no way. KSU on the road…a loss. Not sure what will happen with WVA. But it’s tough to see this bunch, even with some new players and JUCO talent winning more than 6 games.

“He’s making progress, but he’s not anywhere near where he’s going to be.”

There’s a lot to that statement.

It says that to Tolbert that

a) Yes, you DO have talent, BUT
b) you have to work hard to realize it

In reading the post in Barking Carnival regarding the Aggie fanbase, wait until they visit Death Valley

The LSU fans make the Aggie fans look like church choirs. In fact in Leach’s book as OC for Kentucky, he recounts his fan and locker room experience, when Kentucky visited LSU.

Did you know?

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_has_the_original_death_valley_-_Clemson_or_LSU

Although LSU’s Tiger Stadium was constructed nearly 20 years earlier, the “Death Valley” nickname was first applied to Clemson’s Memorial Stadium in reference to Howard’s Rock, which was plucked for the dessert sands of the actual Death Valley in California.

LSU’s use of the nickname came along quite by accident. In a tongue-in-cheek reference to Clemson Memorial’s nickname, LSU supporters began referring to their stadium as “Deaf Valley”, due to the magnificent volume levels produced within.

Unfortunately, this creativity was lost on television commentators, newspaper men, and, yep, a lot of us football fans alike, and after years of incorrectly referring to both as “Death Valley”, the nickname stuck in Baton Rouge as well.

He has been pretty quite all year. But I think the more times he carries the ball the better he will run. Just seems like that type of bruising running back. With Crawford banged up he will have to play a major of the snaps.

Phillipe and Kathy Mulacek started the tortilla toss

They sat in section 119 & they would bring silly string and other strange things to games to amuse themselves. One year in the early 1990’s Tech was being talked about as possibly being invited to the Fiesta Bowl (this was before the Fiesta Bowl became one of the 4 major bowls in the BCS). Phillipe & Kathy had noted that fans of teams who were going to the Rose Bowl would throw roses onto the field & Teams with a likely Orange Bowl bid would toss oranges. So they brought tortillas to indicate they wanted Tech to appear in the Fiesta Bowl.

Well the little suckers flew like Frisbees & everybody in the section was enjoying seeing them fly. The next game several people were tossing tortilla. By the following year it was massive. 1994 was the pinnacle of that tradition. The kickoff at the Cotton Bowl was amazing seeing 100,000 tortillas flying in the air at the same time.

Phillipe was a fraternity brother of mine. He also owned that water slide park outside Lubbock in the 80’s & 90’s. I think he is an oil man in Houston now.

while I realize our defense has been awful...

What is Tubs talking about re: CB?
“We had no choice,” said Tuberville, whose team has allowed 21 touchdown passes, fourth-most in the Big 12. “I think it was pretty evident we just were absolutely playing awful at corner.”
According to big12sports.com, our Pass Defense is 2nd in the conference, now I realize this is entirely because our rush defense is the ABSOLUTE WORST IN THE CONFERENCE. How sad is it that upon first reading that quote my thought was “if we’re allowing 4th most TDs, then at least there’s 3 teams worse than us in that category” and then immediately went to compare that with our rushing D.

It’s telling that we allow the 4th most passing TDs and yet whether winning OR losing everyone STILL pretty much abandons the pass and runs on us in the second half. WTF?!?

by HeeroTX on Nov 23, 2011 9:00 AM CST reply actions

wow... drilling deeper

Did you know that through Nov 19, in conference games we were tied for second LEAST interceptions in the conference, allowed the HIGHEST yds/catch and allowed a 64% completion ratio and STILL had both the lowest number of pass attempts AND completions against (by a wide margin) because our run defense is THAT BAD!

by Raider289 on Nov 23, 2011 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think it has anything to do with OUR QB

I can’t think of ANY reason you say this: “I think it was pretty evident we just were absolutely playing awful at corner.” when we have the LOWEST ranked rush defense and NOT the lowest ranked pass defense, or even the lowest ranked secondary. Maybe it’s just me but in the last few games I’ve found myself thinking that I’d totally accept it right now if teams burned us for TD passes IF they couldn’t gain more than 2 yds/carry on us. play man-to-man on the receivers and stuff everyone else on the line. Yes, we WILL get burned and yeah, we probably don’t have the talent to do that right now. BUT at least we might get pressure sometimes and/or the receivers will drop some passes or the QB will miss. And it’s really disgusting that THAT would be a big step up from the opposition needing max 3 run plays to get 10 yards EVERY TIME.

This could be our worst lashing yet;

There is a lot of hurt on their side. Losing all those close games that past few years is going to put them in the mind set to pour it on.

Maybe another humiliating loss will be enough to fire Tommy. I sure hope so. That’s me talking to myself. It’s that bad.

I agree and you can sure bet Baylor will be playing with a ton of animosity. I get it and would do the same if I were them. Somethings wrong when my wife the Baylor grad is looking forward to this game more than I am.

Even if we win

there will be no bowl. There are 65 teams now with at least 6 wins. And there are 5 out of 18 that still have a chance to get to 6 wins. The odds aren’t good since the big xii would have 9 teams available with only 7 bowls available baring two teams to the BCS.

Meh

Most likely no point saying anything.

I went to the airport for an early flight once. Sat down and started to sleep in a chair. Then realized I had sat down right in front of Mike Leach, and the football team had filled up the food court. I thought about asking him if he was really going to bail out on Tech and coach somewhere else. I just went back to sleep.

Back then it was different.

you have to remember he wasn’t quite the cult icon he is today.
I was too tired to care about a football coach anyway.

Saw him at his coaching show Oct 2009 at Ruby Tequilas

And got his autograph. He signed the NYTimes article from 2005 I had saved (bought it at Borders in DFW). He was very witty—asked him about the famous “Guns Up” bench that was pictured and he said “Yeah, how about that bench.”

Boys, it's gonig to get really bad. Now our HC is telling us that Jarvis and Mays are a bust.

Again, we can’t recruit enough players to fill all the holes we are going to have next year.

Question, someone please tell me where we are going to get enough players to field a starting lineup next year that can win a game.

I would like us to beat Baylor

but I don’t think we will go to a Bowl game and it would probably be best if we didn’t with all of the injuries and the major inconsistencies and on both sides of the ball.

I am hoping things change over the off-season and that a few leaders step-up on this team.
The coaches and coordinators need to decide on the game plan and style of play.

’#82 will be gone and hopefully the remaining players can become a cohesive group and start to play like a well oiled machine.

The HC, OC, DC, and AC’s need to actual COACH these players. If they do that, then maybe we see better results next season.

I just don't want to see a repeat of last week

Either win or lose BIG.

And though I would never root against a Tech team, since this already feels like a losing season, I’m not opposed to making it official.

If we go 6-6

there are plenty of bowls, so we’ll go bowling, somewhere out there

1. That Kansas is in the Big XII…I hate coming in dead last.

Just a theory...

If we actually beat Baylor on Saturday, I don’t think we’ll be bowl eligible. We’re at the bottom of the conference. 8-10 teams are already eligible.

Head asplode.

But being eligible is not the same as being selected...

a win would make us eligible, but it’s doubtful that we’d go bowling. I’m actually okay with this scenario, because it doesn’t mess up our bowl eligibility streak while simultaneously avoiding the embarrassment of a bowl loss.

by battledome on Nov 23, 2011 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think that might have been what I was trying to imply.

And being eligible is not the same as not being eligible.

The coming game needs to be won for that and all the other good reasons.
