Jacob Karam to Transfer from Tech
CRAP!! This kid has a great future. But apparently it won't be with Texas Tech. Per Chris Level who spoke directly to him about it. Hot off the Twitter press...
@ChrisLevelChris Level
Just confirmed with #TexasTechquarterback Jacob Karam that he is transferring. Kid is a class act. He will be missed.

Ouch
Can’t say that I blame him. Between the crowd at the QB position and the present state of the team, his future is bound to be brighter somewhere else.

I think he’s already graduated, or will graduate. He’s a talented kid that will make the world a better place.

Yep
Karam already has his degree so this is a great move for him. I had my doubts all these QB’s would stick around.

Super great kid, very spiritual. Definately a log jam at QB and I do believe Brewer is the future. This is not a decision based off of where the program is or headed. The kids a competitor and wants to play; no different than Chris Todd did when he was behind Harrell. Good luck Jacob!

Agree...
Karam is a good kid, wish him nothing but the best wherever he lands.
I don’t usually like to throw a spear at the players, because I know they’re giving it their best. However, Doege has a fundamental flaw in his release and when facing better/faster players, his “wind up” motion won’t work. All you have to see are the differences in results against the stronger teams we played (noted exception – 0u). Brewer and Young are better mechanically…but that doesn’t speak to grasping the offense and I suppose Brown thinks Doege has a better grasp. There is no way he can say Doege has better mechanics and skill as compared to the younger guys.
After reflecting on some of the things Tubby said at the RRC golf tournament in Dallas, I don’t know why they wouldn’t have tried to develop one of the younger QBs for the long term. My take on his pre-season comments then was that we weren’t going to be competitive on the defensive side of the ball. I don’t see how that’s going to change for 2012. Get the young QBs in there and lose Doege.
Doege
may have some minor flaws, but he had a very good year IMO. Tubs was Doege’s big problem-sticking his nose in the offensive play calling at the wrong times.
Look at his stats: 438 attempts, 645 completions, 4426 yards, 30 TDs, 10 ints, 68% comp. ratio.
Mack Brown would love to have a QB like this!

Overall, that looks pretty good.
There were some games however in which he (and his peers) did not look all that good in moments, even with good stats for the game…well except td’s, my very favorite stat.

I did'nt take it as an attack,
but when you get to be 62 yrs.old, sometimes your mind can’t keep up with your fingers, or something like that.

As a follow up...
Your post made me think a little, because I suspected I was right but wanted to prove it to myself. So, I decided to do a little math and separated the games by the “weak teams” (TXST, UNM, Nevada, KU) and everyone else fell into the “good teams” category.
Doege’s passing efficiency rating against the weak teams is 169.19. Against the good teams, his rating was 127.13…a 25% decline. Now I would certainly expect passing efficiency ratings to decline against the better teams, but not so dramatically. What’s more interesting is his second highest PER was against Texas in a blowout (highest was against OU). Another measure commonly used is yards per attempt. Against the weak teams – 8.15; good teams, 6.41…a 27% decrease. 7+ YPA is acceptable.
Correspondingly, rushing YPA fell off by 35% against the good teams. No surprise there. Success in the running game would have fueled a better PER, for sure.
Bottom line is the statistics, and the record, say we’re not worth a shit. There is no need to start a quarterback that can’t help elevate the team to success. The statistics show that he, and the team, are not effective against good teams.
One of many to come this offseason in my opinion.
I wish him nothing but the best. Class Act! Best of luck!
Any good option qb's out there?

A guy I met here in Austin..
Said that his friend M. Brewer was going to be the number one or two guy next year, and that Karam was being pushed aside. Just heresay but who knows.

Check out Snyder. Their QB Keenan Ward is already committed to Tech.
He ran for almost 300 yards a couple of weeks ago.

If Scotty Young
gets the back up behind Seth then look for Brewer to start looking around. He doesn’t want to be a 1 year starter like so many before him.
I think Brewer will get the spot....soon
how soon not sure but he is our future. He is legit too! I think I read/heard Scotty wanted to transfer when ML left…wouldn’t surprise me if he left as well…..

I dont think Young is Browns kind of guy, He is more of a Leach type pocket passer lots of air under the ball. I watched a couple of his HS games in person and he was much like Harrell

A tidbit on Karam
He will still have at least one, possibly two years of eligibility remaining. He graduated in 2 1/2 years Magna Cum Laude. Good lord!!!

He and Pearlie Graves...
were on Leach’s travel roster in ‘09. He was a good morale guy, too. The optics on this are just really bad… and I’m having a hard time believing that this was about playing time… especially with the trick play he ran against Baylor. There’s no indication that he would sit behind Brewer or Young.
Couldn't agree more
From listening to NB and Tuby during spring training and before the first game, it sounded like Karam was neck-and-neck with Doege. I always thought Karam would pull it out and become the starter. The pass he threw last game did nothing but add to that feeling. I don’t know what happened, but it doesn’t sound like he is leaving because he doesn’t want to compete for the position.

Very smart kid
Also a talented Leach style QB so maybe he soon follows Mike.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Karam is very bright and has a future beyond football.
I am thinking he is after that a lot more than qb’ing a college team.
He may want that though and we will see what happens.
I saw him play in HS and thought he would be amazing for TTU. Things have gone differently than I foresaw, it is all good, best wishes for continued success !

Would make wherever Leach ends up better, quicker.
But if he did, the NCAA would raise both bushy eyebrows. Can’t entice a kid who is still at a school, and their history could be held against them both if that happened. Similar to the NFL’s anti-tampering rule but for college kids…
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
He has to sit a year...
But would still be very valuable. I also wonder about kliff, it’s almost certain dunking cashes in and moves. Does kliff follow or move elsewhere?

If the school he goes to doesn’t have a graduate degree that TTU offers, then he can play right way, per AJ_ZachLong:
So im guessing if Jacob Karam transfers to a DI school with a graduate program not offered by Tech, he will be eligible to play immediately
I don’t know the answer, but just throwing it out there.

No he dosn't
if he has his degree before transfering.

aren’t most transfers not allowed within conference teams?

It's left strictly to the current coach...he can put restrictions on
where a kid moves to. Some have the conf rule, some go further and restrict it to only teams not on any future or proposed/in discussions schedule.

This is normal...
I wonder if Washington State is in his sights???
Tough loss for Tech's team, but good gain for him!
While the QB situation is indeed too crowded, he’ll be able to go utilize his skills elsewhere, he got his degree, and hats off to that young man!
I’m sure he’ll be missed on the field, in the locker room and around the community, but good for him I say.
I also think that while Young was the most heralded of the other three, that I think Brewer might be the best among them, and give them the best chance overall.
I think
if Brewer beats Young (and/or Doege) that Scotty will be transferring as well.

Great Tech rep
congratulations. He is great representative of Tech and obviously smart enough to read the situation at the QB position. Good luck in the future.
He's graduating, why stick around?
We all know Tubby won’t give him a shot next season—it’s still Doege’s team. Remember the Tubby mantra with Potts and Sheffield? ""I’ll give them equal opportunity." How did that work out? Look for Karam possibly at Wash State now that Leach is there, but as he’s from greater Houston my money is you’ll see him at UH succeeding Keenum, since the back-up there is not that hot. Watch and see.
This is exactly why I think
we will lose Brewer to a transfer. He will choose Young over Brewer.
im gonna have to disagree w/ you on that . Brewer will stay and Young will leave…..But none of it will matter if we cant grab a Bas A$$ Juco Linebacker who can tackle

The guys at WSU forum say they are pretty well fixed at QB
But their idea of a good QB may not match ML’s.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
ML no doubt gave Moos his perspective on graduation rates....
There is a large group of commits for this season’s class already and a number of qb’s on the roster several of which have played some.
If there are 4 on the roster, ML will find his KK in that group and go.

RUMOR: KARAM TO HOUSTON
It is the Rumor i have heard.
They have a Law School, it is in-State. They are looking to continue the pass happy offense no matter who the coach is.
It won’t be washington state, they have no law school.
Law School & Varsity Football would be a bit much
I wonder if anybody has ever tried it? Byron Wizzer White maybe?
2011 Season - No excuses. Just win!
Most schools nowadays (incl Tech)
have a program where you leave undergrad school early and enter law school, then you get a BA, an MBA and a JD by the time you leave law school. That kinda pissed me off after I spent the full 4 years to get my undergrad and another 27 months for JD.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Maybe my only knowledge of what it takes to get a JD is "The Paper Chase", but it doesn't look easy
And it also doesn’t look like there would be 30 or more hours a week to spend practicing & playing football.
"Thinking? You may be giving Tuberville too much credit. That head is only there as an ear support system." TechFirst 12/2/2011
No, it wouldn't be easy
I kinda doubt the law school would even allow it, at a good school anyway. They wouldn’t allow you to work part-time or anything when I went.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
It's too bad that as the backup of a 5-7 team
he doesn’t feel like he’s got a chance to compete for the starting spot next year
HC has a way of calling young men into his office and telling them to leave or else.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Let's see....
Degree 2 1/2 years MCL. Getting off the sinking ship with 2 years eligibility left. Pretty damn smart if you ask me.
