ODDS AND ENDS
Jian Sword Dancing - YouTube (via)
I don't know how SARR is going to use this as inspiration, but I'm sure that he can. I also feel like that this could be some sort of inspiration to the team this weekend, no matter the sport: teamwork can be a beautiful dance.

Red Raiders Rally Back To Top Southwestern Oklahoma, 76-70 - Texas Tech Red Raiders Official Athletic Site and Young Raiders squad barely tops SWOSU | Red Raiders and Red Raiders win preseason showdown despite sloppy play - The Daily Toreador: Sports
It's a start and it's not a loss, so there's that. I mentioned this yesterday, I'm very much excited that everyone else is excited that the program has a fresh start, but if you keep your expectations low (this isn't easy for a guy like myself who likes to see the positive) then I don't think you'll be too disappointed this season. It's going to be really rough this year and a possible indication is the fact that this team was losing at halftime to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the game was close to the very end. Here are the links to the boxscore (PDF) and to the post-game quotes (PDF). First things first, SF Jaye Crockett, C Kader Tapsoba and PG Kevin Wagner didn't play as they were injured and in the quotes, Gillispie doesn't give any clue as to how long any of the players will be out, but he does say it's not any sort of season ending injury.
More basketball and football links are after the jump.
The player of the game was PG Javarez Willis, who had 22 points (8-11 FG, 4-5 3FG, 1 AST, 5 TO) to lead the team and C Robert Lewandowski had 18 (6-8 FG, 5 RB). Just about all of the newcomers struggled, except for SF Jaron Nash who was pretty good off the bench and in limited minutes (11 PTS, 5-5 FG, 5 RB) and SF Terran Petteway (6 PTS, 2-8 FG, 10 RB, 3 AST, 4 TO, 3 BLK). The biggest problem was that there were 28 turnovers to just 11 assists.
Here's Gillispie on the whether the exhibition benefited Texas Tech:
Well we’ll see, a lot of our guys have to be embarrassed by the way they played and I’m not embarrassed by their efforts, they’re freshman, and they were shell-shocked out there, we had only had two returning guys out there and they didn’t play very well either as far as the way you think the game but that’s ok, that’s why we played it and we’ll improve from it, but again I thought it was perfect because they executed what they wanted to against us we didn’t take anything away, the only guy that started taken things away from them was Jaron Nash, he did a fantastic job of denying passes like we normally try to, he really changed and turned the game for us. We didn’t throw the ball inside, I mean Lew (Lewandowski) was so wide open on the ball reversal and that’s the way we are going to play but those are mistakes that are correctable and we will correct them and we’ll be better next time out. I thought it was perfect, it was a lot of fun to watch the mistakes happen, it was fun in a bad way, but it was fun because it’s going to help us get a better start tomorrow in practice.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
Tech senior back in game after injuring both knees | Red Raiders
Focus on C Justin Keown and his perseverance in playing through injury this year. Keown sounds like one tough S.O.B.:
Keown was on his way back into the lineup — for the second time this season, after separate knee injuries. In the last 21/2 months, the Red Raiders’ 6-foot-4, 286-pound senior has suffered tears to the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee and a sprained MCL in his left knee.
But he’s made it a point to get back as soon as possible.
"That’s why I came all the way from South Carolina, to play here," said Keown, who has missed only two games. "Being my last season, I wanted to give it my all. My family’s back home watching me, supporting me. I wanted to play for them. It means so much to me in so many different ways."

Grandma- hold my beer
I’m gonna do some Jian sword dancing with my butterfly knife and my sister.
Now I know what people must feel when they read some of my stuff for the first time. Monkeys and donkeys and couches don’t make a lot of sense if you don’t know the background.
I have no idea why grandma and the terrier were watching brother and sister dance with swords and butterfly knives, but it was beautiful. Background be damned.
No bullfights. No gambling. No donkeys. No vanilla extracts. No piñatas. None of that stuff. Straight football. No switchblades.

Brother
Is going to rue the day he joined his sister in this little dance.
He will probably need to change schools, relocate and change his name…
Or just go to A&M.
He just stepped out of the sliding glass door having finished reading Mike Leach's autobiography
Of course he wants to join in and swing his sword.

Realization that I am old.
As I watched that video, I kept thinking that she was going to hurt somebody or herself with that sword. Where are those kids parents?
Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.
Don't worry- grandma is there to make sure they don't do something silly

My favorite was the cheesy peasant painting hung on a door facing the backyard
Why didn’t I think of that? Hang your favorite pictures on the outside so the neighbors can admire your taste in art.

bball is different that football
the lower division schools are still stacked with good talent. Butler got upset already by Northern State. So, just keep that in mind. Other than that from what I can read we need to get a little better handling the ball. That will come with experience. Mid season we should really know what kind of team this is.

It takes time to learn how to play together in game situations.
Not going to get that experience in practice. Glad they won. Confidence builder but also a reality check. I have lots of hope.
Jian Sword Dance
Some members of Parson’s Mounted Cavalry (i.e., aggot) sported wood over this video. A shiny sword, silly dancing, Skoal ring in her back pocket. If she’d been wearing some white painter’s coveralls and/or female riding boots and the dog had been a collie . . . oh, what could’ve been.
BT, I thought the dog as going to be decapitated as it wandered in to get a closer look.
You just dated yourself!
Painter’s pants??? Ha, ha! Wonder when those will make a comeback!!
Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says, "oh crap, she's up".
Ah well, guess I dated myself too...
I wore, no I take that back, I ROCKED painter’s pants back in the day!!!
Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says, "oh crap, she's up".
I am excited about the basketball team.
Yeah, that’s not bad!
I understand that the program was not a total loss, but it was in some disarray.
I still don’t like basketball all that much, but even if they don’t end up having a great season I think they can really go somewhere in a year or two.
That’s always good news. They still have the potential to get stomped on, but we see that they can also win.
Has to be cool.
You can almost imagine a lady with shades like that sitting on the porch playing the meanest blues ever on the Dobro, when the grandkids aren’t around playing their crappy techno.
Hell give her a banjo and rock it out...
That would have added much more effect! Agreed…that techno was horrible. Flashbacks of Napoleon Dynamite music.
Isn't Southwestern Oklahoma the school
where Dennis Rodman played? As demonstrated last week at the Jones, winning isn’t something you should take for granted against any team. That’s why you play the games.
Basketball is going to bea work in progress this year. Nine freshman-wow. Too bad Lou Alcindor isn’t in the group; you could win the NCAAs with that talent.
Quotes that I like:
TexasTech.com:
as Javarez Willis chipped in 22 points and Robert Lewandowski added 18 points to led Texas Tech
Experienced players stepping up on offense !
Clutch free throw shooting was big
BIG !
By Nick Kosmider, LAJ:
"I thought it was perfect," he said.
Astute !!
Gillispie said he prefers the exhibition format because it allows his team to experience playing in front of a crowd — like the 2,188 on hand Thursday — even if it means "they see how bad you are."
Honest and open !!
"The only guy that really started taking things away from them was Jaron Nash,"
This was the defense ??
Evan Jansa, DT:
Texas Tech had six true freshmen see playing time in its first exhibition game of the season, but the Red Raiders were able to overcome their youth.
An echo from football this season.
"I have not told them to shoot a free throw yet in practice," Gillispie said. "The only thing we did good was the things we haven’t practiced."
= I am an awesome coach !! ;-)
the Red Raiders were able to stave off the upset against a Division II school
Yay ! We are barely better than this Div2 school !!!
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
But we are better.........and..............we are playing with 5 men on the floor instead of
4 and Singletary.
