Texas 52 Texas Tech 20: Post Game Thread

If only we could have punched in a TD on the first drive it would have been...ah, who am I kidding. We were in this for all of 17 minutes. What an absolutely humiliating two weeks we've had...

Again, Glasgow chooses to put to many db’s on the field. We have no vertical passing game. Im tired of watching this thing we call a team.

Agree about the Defense

I’ve been on this platform for weeks now. The standard 4-2 front that we run is not even that. It is only 4 men in the box. The 2 backers are 5 yards off the line. That’s pretty easy to block with 6 guys on the other side of the line of scrimmage. I predicted that if we played the same old 4-2, we’d get our ass kicked…..

Texas ran the same plays over and over, with the same results. 10 yards, 15 yards, 8 yards at a clip. And no change from the DC Glasgow or Tubs. Pitiful!!

Are the coaches watching the same game I am watching?

And I’m afraid that’s happening to a lot of us. An ambivalent fan base is not a good sign for the future, no matter how many recruiting championships we win.

I'm not going to lie

I’m losing my heart & stomach for Tech.

My old college roommate tore into me on the phone while I was on my way to the game about how she has read the “dumbest things she has ever read” on this site & how personally she takes it since she lives in Lubbock. She & I have never seen eye to eye on the Tech admin, Tech football, Adam James, Leach etc. But she let out all of her frustration on me & it was ugly. I love her to death but I finally said we needed to hang up because I wanted to enjoy my day.

Whatever happened to being able to have different views – especially with people we care about – without being so ugly with each other?

From another other worlder

Austin, that’s why folks like you and so many of us enjoy our time at Tech and hit the road! Grew up in Texas, went to Lubbock and four years later literally broke the steering wheel in my car as I watched Lubbock disappear over the horizon in the rear view mirror. Actually used that phrase in my DJ days in the hub city years before the Mac Davis song I might add. Loved Tech (except when a member of the Board of Regents wanted to throw me in jail) and couldn’t wait to depart the Hub. No hard feelings and I certainly don’t disparage anyone who wants to live there, but It ain’t my cup of tea!

Tell your friend/roomate that sorry to break the news, but not everyone sees the hub city as the center of all that is holy and good. I departed (breaking aforementioned steering wheel) in 1970 headed East and haven’t looked back.

Unlike Mac Davis, there’ll be no songs or terms in my will asking to be buried in Lubbock Texas in my jeans (or bare ass nekkid for that matter – although that might be interesting).

And until the damage to Honor, effectuated by the Hance administration, is acknowledged, addressed and corrected (primarily by paying Leach what he earned in 2009 and bonus), no return trips, bowl games or direct involvement in Tech. That done, we can talk football!

Hang in there and remember – they’re the whorns! nobody wants that!

by NH(former)Raider on Nov 5, 2011 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

There are crappy people everywhere.

Lubbock doesn’t have a handle on them all, and in fact, I’d bet there are a bunch more crappy people in other towns vs. Lubbock. No need to bash on the city. I happen to like it here….

Tech92 if by any chance it was to me

1st – be nice! I was just starting to really like you!

2nd – no, of course I would not become a UT fan,it was a joke. But I was really dejected after the game – from the game itself & from the incident with my friend. How much does it suck that this crap at Tech is affecting personal relationships?

3rd – I probably will not go to the Okie State game now due to the coaching situation – if they aren’t going to show up, why should I?

4th – probably won’t be buying season tickets again for a while.

5th – ALWAYS, ALWAYS wear tech shirts when I travel during football season. Even wore one last weekend on my flight back after the Iowa State game. Tomorrow I’m flying out to CA & for the first time I will NOT be wearing a Tech shirt. Love the players, the team & my university but it hurts to watch the trainwreck that we are right now.

6th – I have NEVER stopped supporting my Red Raiders since I started at Tech in ‘84 – and this part is not directed at you – and I’m sick & tired of ANYONE questioning my commitment to our university because I don’t show my support the way they think I should.

That's a shame

But a lot of folks in Lubbock are absolutely BRAINWASHED about Tubs, the admin, etc.—I know because I live there (it’s my hometown). I either don’t discuss Tubs, Hance with friends or I just tell ‘em "That’s my views, if you don’t like it tough shit!" But it is a shame when someone pulls that stuff on you, and it often results in the end of a friendship. I don’t like that one bit at all, but it does happen. Hope that be the case—HANG IN THERE, AUSTIN!

BTW, I’ll be at Okie State next week booing the evildoers for one and all!

To San Antonio Red Raider

The ambivalent fan base began with Kent Hance, letting his ego control his brains and firing Coach Leach over something he didn’t do. Before you scream at me, read the depositions, the emails, and other material that proves it all!!!! Don’t get mad at me without knowing the facts. We don’t want Coach Leach back at Tech, so get over THAT one also. HOWEVER, it WAS done and now we have to live with the consequences and a VERY divided fan base. Tubbs is NOT the coach we should have! He didn’t do well BEFORE he got to Tech. Until Kent Hance, Bailey, and some BoR members are gone and they pay off Coach Leach with what they owe him, we will NOT have more than we have now,…an ambivalent fan base!

by Pamela S SŦroud on Nov 5, 2011 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow - relax Ms. Stroud

Perhaps you should follow your own advice & not post before knowing the facts. SARR is very educated on the facts of the situation at Tech. He keeps a lot of us sane (okay that point might be debatable…) with his humor.

I agree with him that there is an ambivalent fan base & I don’t see any part of his post supportive of or defending the administration regarding their treatment of Coach Leach. In fact, I don’t see where he mentioned them at all. He was simply stating his position & his view of other fans. At least that’s how I read it.

Furthermore, I am aware that you are a member of Team Leach, as I was in the early days as well. Your aggressive, steamrolling, take no prisoners approach has made it difficult for those of us who are Leach supporters & want accountability from the administration. We all get lumped in with Team Leach as “radicals”. Some of us either know from experience or believe the only way to accomplish things sometimes is with diplomacy.

You all are making it hard for the rest of us trying to accomplish many of the same goals. Please consider this without getting defensive & immediately firing off a response.

Geez, speaking of rants. I think Mama Stroud made some excellent points. At least those “radicals” you refer to have never waivered from their convictions because to them, this has not been all about football. I’m not thinking some of the comments now coming from this forum are filled with diplomacy but if Tubbs embarrassments on the football field get you talking about wanting accountablility from the administration, then so be it. I just hate that for the student athletes. They have deserved none of this except for that entitled little shit James.

A little advice girl to girl (unless you’re a boy named clementine in which case my most sincere apologies for the mistake) inform yourself about your audience before you begin taking swipes. It will help avoid embarrassment & alienating some folks that may share the same goals.

Jumping on a blog as a newbie & attacking people isn’t going to help your cause.

Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says, "oh crap, she's up".

by Austin, Tx on Nov 6, 2011 12:20 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

What could you have possibly read in my comments that you construed as uninformed. As far as self-righteous, finger-pointing, I’m laughing just from the hypocrisy of you actually choosing those words. Although, I’m guessing from the coyness of your tone, you were intending to entertain others. I’m embarrassed only for you. I was only commenting that you were actually “ranting” at what you felt was a “rant” and you seem not to take any constructive critism well. As far as being a newbie, I’ve been reading DTN probably before you were born and posting almost as often, but it seems just on stuff you have no interest in. But I’m confused to what your interests are other than hostile aggression. As far as you wondering about my sex……makes me no difference because it’s funny how people that know the least about you usually have the most to say ……and usually it’s just impertinent drivel.

by darlinclementine on Nov 6, 2011 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

This ought to be fun...

Austin, Tx’s points didn’t fall on deaf ears. All she is saying is that many alumni feel like the only way to enact the kind of change we want is to use some respect and civil discourse in our attempts. I agree with her and don’t think having an anonymous argument between you two is going to do any good. Her point about alienating folks who share the same sentiments as you was spot on. We are all on the same team…let’s save that effort for emails to Hance and Hocutt instead of using it on arguments in chat rooms.

by TTU '04 on Nov 6, 2011 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

And I completely agree with your points TTU04. I was merely pointing out that I thought this was an open forum and not her private domain to warn others about alienating people but then to do exactly that to those that she seems to find to “radical” to post in here or that challenge her opinion of what she thinks is being diplomatic. Attacking Ms Stroud’s opinion or her membership in some group was uncalled for. I also feel we all all on the same team, perhaps she should remember that before “lumping” people into categories with provoking comments.

Both these ladies don’t seem to notice their posts started by attacking. Not worth the time or energy to point out the MANY inaccuracies stated as fact & the assumptions that are incorrect. DTNers know what they are.

I’ll say this in general though, I discovered a long time ago that if you are going to try and influence someone to do something, or fall in with your way of thinking – a full frontal assault is not going to yield the results you’re looking for.

Yes, I think it is safe to say a new club is not being formed between Ms. Stroud, Clementine & Austin.

Not worth it in this case. No one needs to explain their position on anything to anyone. Except maybe their lawyer, depending on the charges…

But this type of attitude, negativity & uninformed approach (know your audience – do some research, for example) will not get many of us where we would like to go.

UT OL is starting to learn to run block and abused the TT front 4

Ash,who is good for a TO or two only had to pass 7 times, only 3 times in the 1st half

UT had no fear of the TT run game and TT had -8 rushing yards at half

Seems like the secondary somewhat gave up on tackling Begeron in the late 3rd

UT’s wildcat worked in the RZ, TT not so much…

Not sure what to say overall. TT got out-schemed (or overwhelmed) on D and UT’s bend but not break did what they wanted.

it would seem like network commentator types would begin to note and speak about Tuberville’s failures especially in light of Leach’s book (and best seller that it is), showing the reality of the falsification in firing, combined with a growing antagonism towards T’s results on the part of Tech fans who are not dumb.

I was at my brother's duplex watchingthe UT destruction of Tech

Well, actually, Tubs and his coaches managed to destroy everything that all the coaches in the last 20 or 30 years have tried to build. I am very close to boxing up all my Tech stuff and mailing it (COD?) to Tubs with a letter letting him know that he has managed to lose me as a Tech football fan. I think he is really here to destroy everything Tech. Proof? Too many injuries to really be real. Too many suspensions to be worthy. Too many poor showings to be exciting. Too many bad play calls to ever expect to win in the Big 12. I think, too, the OU win surprised him because he did not expect the team to play well, since he wants it to fail, miserably, which they managed to do two and a half games now. Amazing how an “inspirational” speech can net you a 110+ to 30+ deficit in scoring over that span. If I do return as a fan, it will be because the football season is over and the basketball team actually is trying to win. Until then, bye, bye.

Physically our defense was outmatched severely. O-line just had to get a little bit of a lean on players like Hyder to get a push. Offensively thought we played well except for the total lack of a run game. Doege played well.

Defense is a mystery to me. We suck. Either we don’t have the system down after half a season (which is understandable) or we physically aren’t athletic enough or big enough to stop an offense. Ridiculous

For 2 straight years Tubs has hired people with no experience to be DC

Both Glasgow and Willis did not have any Coordinator experience prior to coming to Tech. It’s tough enough for a seasoned DC to do well against the Big XII offenses, then when you hire a person with zero DC experience it has the recipe for disaster as we are seeing.

When Tubs took over as head coach, the only change that he had to make was to hire a real DC and improve the DC. He did not have to make any changes to the Offense. Neal Brown has somewhat done that except for some minor tweaks that have made the offense a little more predictable but we still remain a top 10 offense, so I will give offense a pass but the defense and special teams have been a joke (or nonexistant).

It’s sad but the best defensive performance that I have seen from tech in the last 2 years was in the bowl game against Northwestern and that’s because Sam McElroy was the interim DC in Willis’ absence and McElroy had some DC experience. This shows that we don’t lack in skills at defensive playing positions, we just don’t have anybody to coach our defense.

This wasn’t a “taken by the back of the shed” beating…they beat us with a dull, rusty shovel over the head, over and over and over and over again. My God…are we really that bad? I was holding out hope for our coaching staff…but geez… I don’t know how much more of this shit I can handle.

I think that the remainder of the season

you can expect more of the same. In my current state of pessimism, I see Tuberville leading us to defeat in every remaining game of the season.

If you think negatively, you don’t get upset if you lose, you expect it. If you win, so what?

Anyone else see this gem tweeted by Chuck Carlton?

Since building a 31-7 lead on Oklahoma early in the third quarter, Texas Tech has been outscored 124-37. Incredibly crazy stat.

Is it fair to say that this type of outcome/stat is possible when the team leader is Nancy? Maybe a true leader should step it up?

by TTU '04 on Nov 5, 2011 4:00 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

In all fairness

Plenty of people have been posting since the OU win that he’s the leader. Granted, those same claims have been absent since last Saturday but I’m of the opinion that a leader is a leader when winning or losing. It’s a leadership quality. You can’t only be a leader when we win…but it seems to look like some see it that way.

by TTU '04 on Nov 5, 2011 4:11 PM CDT via iPhone app up reply actions

I don't find it hard to see

why this Tech team sucks so badly. Our quarterback – and perhaps best offensive player – called Adam James one of the team leaders. If that’s the best this team can do, what should we expect to see on the field? I remember when some former players named Graham Harrell and Eric Morris said Adam James was basically a turd. Now, THOSE were real team leaders.

There is definitely something odd about that

There was some discussion last week about how the same reporter kept asking Doege and the others to describe James’ leadership. Did it 2 or 3 weeks in a row.

Seth mentioned it in one of the threads this week. The whole thing is just a little odd.

It’s very dark in there. I can hear faint whimpering. Funny thing is, all he has to do is hit the button on the wall to open the garage door… Not quite sure what to do next…any suggestions???

At one point i was a supporter of the coaching staff

but i think they are the problem. We bring in big name coaches and have an 18th ranked recruiting class, but we cant do anything with it. Youngs players arguement doesnt hold up, for me, this late in the season. They have had plenty of time.

The excuse of installing a new defense, Diaz on UT’s sideline didnt look like he was having many problems at all stopping our offense. Only thing I can hope for is to become a tshirt fan of another university next year (specifically one who hires a captain as the head coach)

For those who think that comparing tubs to the last coach is going to somehow help,,,, news flash!!!! … Leach NOT coming back…..he may come back to pickup his check Tech still owes him…. For those who are ready to put fore sale signs in tubby’s yard…. Running him off would be far worse for Texas Tech in the long run…As no coach will be able meet up to martyred Leach standards. You idiots posting that cTT will get fired are….well idiots. I am not high up in the Tech alumni organization or well connected, but I have heard first hand from one that is….cTT will be here through his contract, unless he decides to retire. Eventually you TL’s are going to have to realize two things. Leach ain’t coming back and cTT is our coach for at least to the 2013 season. Oh, and all your complaining and whining on RP is not going to change that. Oh, and all your emails and promises to stop buying tickets and donations is not going to matter either. As the game went on I never noticed him again & that wasn’t a conscious thing. I didn’t realize it until I was reading your post. A few of the players I did notice: Brewer, Vest, Doege, Mackey, Torres…I’ll have to think but those are the ones that jump right out that seemed to have a presence.

War Eagle!

Well, my wife got her Masters at Auburn while I was in the Army and Auburn football was two levels above what I saw at Tech and the fans, oh my! Tech would get something like 35,000 fans at a game in my time, Auburn 90,000.

As long as Tuberville/Hance’s debacle reigns at Tech, I need to have an alternative until Leach has a good footing somewhere, so for me, it might as well be Auburn.

Have a laugh on a aTm fan

One day before we played OU. A aTm fan saw me on the putting green on my home course in north Austin with all my Tech gear on. He looked at me with an upset look on his face and said “o….. so you are one of those dreamers.” I was nice and did not try to educate him because that is not possible, but now I would like to call him and ask how his dream is these days ha ha

Bump him up to 3.5 million. Show how serious we are about paying coaches a great deal of money in reward for an undefeated season 7 years ago.

So does Auburn refund any of the salary we pay Tubs. They should since the benefited from the 2004 season we are paying for.

Next Year, just give him one more year

Said it last week, calm down we will be better next year with Tuberville’s son as our QB. Its in the works, its part of his master plan to win here.

More good news, Hance wants to move our staduim to His nuclear waste dump.

It's hard to be a Tech fan

I know. I’ve been on for 50 years. Is it just me or does anyone else wish we had been drilled by Oklahoma? At the time it was touted as Tubs biggest win at Tech. I see it as Techs big loss. We may have him longer because of that screwy win. The sooner he is gone the better…no matter the short term angst. I’ve had it.

by birdhntr on Nov 5, 2011 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

I admit it

I said that when it happened and I said it again today. I guess that means I’m a bad fan to some…but I see it as a necessary mindset to ensure long term success of our program.

Well, I liked the

OU victory for the kids, but I understand your point. I can say, since I have felt that Tuberville made snide unnecessarily cutting remarks about L., in a perverse sense, I don’t mind him getting his nose rubbed in it and of course Hance deserves above all the comeuppance of his failed machinations.

Terminally wrong choice

Why couldn’t we get a real coach? Like Snyder at K St? He inherited a train wreck of a team and in two years he has them playing as a legitimate Top 20 team. You know damn well he didn’t have a wealth of talent to work with, but he coached those kids up. All our big-name coach does is make excuses about how young we are. Did you notice how many freshmen and sophomores in orange were running over our asses today?

Snyder is a terrific coach.

He’s in limited supply, but I agree with your point. Our current coach doesn’t know how to do the things that Snyder does so well. Instead of seeing our young team maturing, we’re seeing them continue to be young. At this point in the season your starters should be pretty competent. We’re still making some pretty silly mistakes, and we’re not fundamentally sound as a football team.

a question

If we were playing the ut game thanksgiving weekend this year and the morale was as low as it is now and with only 4 or 5 wins….what % of the jones would be ut fans?

Thanksgiving WEEKEND is fine - It's Thanksgiving DAY that is a problem

I traveled to Lubbock for the Thanksgiving weekend Saturday Houston game last year (and Jones Stadium was 1/4 empty that game). It’s the family gatherings they want us to blow off that make the Thanksgiving Day game a problem for out of towners. I stay with old friends when I travel in for all the games. I have no desire to crash their family holiday dinners. I’m sure they would invite me, but it’s awkward. I’m not part of their family. That right there is the dealbreaker for me.

It’s really hard to imagine the situation being different for next year’s game. The Cows are steadily getting their act together and we have only gotten worse in every department. Three ring circus, my ass.

Those T-shirt fans will pay handsome prices for good seats, so I can see a sea of orange next year.

I think Tech fans would show up. The people willing to do that are trending down after a season like this one for sure. I’m concerned, very concerned.

"I didn't come to Texas Tech to win seven or eight games,"

. . . said Tuberville, who spoke to local Red Raider Club members and Tech fans at the Amarillo Civic Center. “I could have done that anywhere. I came here to win championships, and it can totally be done.”

That’s typical coach speak for sure. Tuberville isn’t the guy that’s going to make things happen at Tech. He’ll get his year 3 but don’t expect anything beyond 6 or 7 wins with this guy who coaches from a far.

Well, austin, tx, I said I would be here - win or lose - and here I am.

And where were the Techies Friday night at Sholtze’s? Ah, well – their loss.

It would be chickens..t of me to gloat, so I will leave that to the fraternity children.

I won’t hold you to the groveling crap but I do expect a beer!

I will make this comment about the game – from your opponents viewpoint.

1. Tech was still scary up to the middle of the 3rd Qtr., when it was obvious they were too far down to recover.
2. UT’s offensive line monsters eventually wore your understized DL down.
3. Had the game been played in Lubbock, we would have still won, but by a much more narrow score.
4. Tech didn’t look like the same team that played last week, regardless of the final score.

Ok, that’s it.

Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!

Yeah, that beer thing? Not going to happen.

And not because of the game. I just don’t meet random guys from the internet for beers…although I’m sure you’re very nice.

Not to mention, probably old enough to be your grandfather. So, since I wasn’t really looking for a way to meet you (alough I am sure you are a very nice person) – you can send me an internet beer just as well.

Tickets for Okie State game - don't miss this opportunity!!

Due to illness from watching the last two games, I will not be attending the game this weekend.

I have two tickets in Section 107, Row 30, Seats 4&5. I also have a parking pass for Raider Park. If you’re interested email me at dfarmer@austin.rr.com. We’ll talk…

Post Game Interviews

My take was that Tubs basically threw the players under the bus. ‘We don’t have enough to stop the run’. ‘We don’t have enough bullets’. ‘We don’t have 50-60 guys capable of playing at this level’. Not one reference to coaching failures. ‘We (coaches) tried everything but our guys just couldn’t stop the run’. Our linemen aren’t big enough and our guys can’t tackle.

That’s really got to be a confidence builder for the team.

What I saw out of these 2 teams

I saw UT as a team that has struggled to find an identity but is hanging its hat on being a stronger more physical team. They are willing to get away from what they had a couple years ago and focus on the running game.

Tech is young (where did all our upper classmen go?) who are still learning systems (both sides). We seem to try speed and finesse to get the job done. When we do well it seems like we revert back to more Leach focused football and when we get away from that we struggle.

While watching the game today it clicked one aspect that I think gets under looked with the Tubs transition. Bennie Wylie a few years ago seemed to be making some major strides with our players. He left shortly into the Tubs transition but I knew as soon as he left this would hurt us. When I saw he made his way to Texas he would turn that team around. For how many years has the Texas running game sucked (unless your the QB). Now they are a power running game abandoning the spread they have run for years. Often overlooked I think Bennie leaving Tech was a major set back for our program.

by Lucky 13 on Nov 6, 2011 2:03 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, losing Bennie was a loss for us and a gain for our enemy.. Many on this site said so at the time...

But he was too much associated with the old regime.. and the new guys coming in knew better ways of doing things…
I think I even remember some touting how our new S & C team would make us better… hard to measure that, but I think you can see a difference in the horns from their change…

and that's another thing

when tub came in he HAD to change the weight room…….our weights were what? not heavy enough, wrong color? what. He had to change to imitation grass on the practice field……….must have known we would never see rain again……he wanted to build a hill……..WTF? and he said Wiley wasn’t the right guy.

Losing Bennie was a disaster

Tubs and his people said that HIS S&C guy would be a great improvement. Well, that’s the same BS as everything else that Tubs &Co have said—look at how UT’s playing and then look at us. We’re having so many more injuries and our defense “can’t tackle an 80 year old woman.” I’m glad Bennie landed on his feet, but hate that he’s with the Horns now—but that’s all Clueless Tommy’s fault!
