Honoring our Seniors

As we all know, Saturday marks the final home game of the season for this year's senior class.   They have toiled, worked hard, grown and proudly represented our school on the field of play.

They have let their play on the field and in the classroom do their talking for them.

Some of these players have had the opportunity to bask in the limelight while others' accomplishments have taken place behind the scenes.

This year's class includes 18 graduating seniors.

==========================================

I would like to propose a little project for our fellow DTNers.

I suggest that we DTNers show our respects by posting a thought about each of these players below (at least one post per player). Hopefully, we'll be able to cover all 18.

Those of you who know the players personally or know their families or are from the same town/city are encouraged to share their insights.  Feel free to write as much or as little as you would like.

Remember, Google is your friend

(Note to self: I hope this works, otherwise its going to be really embarrassing for you.)

The deserving seniors include . . .

Star-divide

Donnie Carona, K, Beaumont, TX

Aaron Crawford, RB, Memphis, TN

Brett Dewhurst, S, Klein, TX

Lonnie Edwards, OL, Brownsboro, TX

Jared Flannel, DB, Brazoria, TX

Jacoby Franks, WR, Orange, TX

Jonathan Guerra, OL, Victoria, TX

Bradley Hicks, PK, Magnolia, TX

Justin Keown, C, Anderson, SC

Donald Langley, DT, Germantown, MD

David Neil, OL, Flower Mound, TX

Mickey Okafor, OL, Houston, TX

Chris Perry, DT, Keller, TX

Scott Smith, DE, Kailua, HA

Jesse Smitherman, DS, Burleson, TX

Tyrone Sonier, LB, Missouri City, TX

Tramain Swindall, WR, Oklahoma City, OK

Sawyer Vest, CB, Childress, TX

(Note to DTN:  If there is anyone I have left off any other deserving senior from this list, please let me know and I will include.)

Donnie Corona's is a good redemption story.

In the world of college athletics, this is the type of comeback that you really like to see.

Highly recruited kid, great guy from all accounts, unexpectedly has a really rough start and you think his career is over, but then he sticks it out and somehow manages to end his career on a really positive note.

I hope he gets a very warm round of applause.

Jacoby Franks

I’ve enjoyed watching JF for all his time here at Tech. He has made some very amazing catches. I know there has been some injuries and a lot of folks pushing him for time on the field, but when the chips have been down, Jacoby has always been there and made the clutch catch. Best of luck as you move on. I’m very proud of you.

Jacoby is an amazing talent. I have never understood why he is not getting a lot more snaps.

Simple rule of thumb: Everything before the but is BS.

he is still battling a foot injury from last year when he broke his foot.
He has pins and screws. Not 100%

Even at 50%, he is better than some lining up at IR.

For sawyer vest

To keep playing after a family tragedy says a lot about him and his family. Everytime I see him on the field he is working hard….great effort guy and walk on.

I'll be nobody likes taking him on in one on one drills.

Good example of someone who wants to be here.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Lonnie Edwards & Mickey Okafor

Gonna hurt losing these guys. They combine for a total of 34 starts (23 for Edwards and 11 for Okafor) coming in to this season.

Both guys were on various second team All-Conference lists last year and they both have had productive careers.

Based on the concept that OL should function as a single-unit to be effective, I thought it made sense to recognize them together.

don't forget Justin Keown

he had me cracking up during the Eaglebank Bowl with all the offsides penalties he was drawing. Actually come to think of it the heart is getting ripped out of the O-Line at the end of this year.

Swindall is exactly what you expect from a Texas Tech receiver: great route runner, sticky hands, and good blocking. Vest, Sonier, and Dewhurst all deserve credit for sticking it out in this program through some real turmoil, even though they never made much of an on-field impact.

Dang, great catch Mojave

My bad. Certainly should have included Keown. Considering Keown, Edwards and Okafor finishing up this year is a tough realization.

David Neil

I met David Neil at the Lubbock airport in 2008. I was picking up my son, who had come down with a terminal case of freshmanitis and hadn’t survived his first semester at Tech. It was a bad time for our family.
I only spoke to David for fifteen minutes or so, just the usual where’d you go to high school, what position do you play, but he was well-spoken, polite and looked me in the eye when he stood up to shake my hand (he actually got up from his table and walked over to mine to shake hands). I’m a firm believer that you can judge a person’s character by the way they interact with strangers. It made me proud that my school recruits players who comport themselves the way he did that day.
I always look for his name in the stats; unfortunately, he didn’t ever find a way to crack the starting lineup consistently. He was, however, First Team All Big-12 Academic last year.

Beware the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people are ignorant without coming by their ignorance the hard way.

Great story.

I’ll vote for him too. Vest is special because he tried to play and help the team, tho a family tragedy that morning must have affected him greatly. Oh, and of course, Swindall. Ok, Crawford, too …., etc., etc.

Aaron Crawford

As much as it hurt to lose ES, I’m happy that Crawford has had the chance to get on the field. He never quit… even when he went from starting over Shannon Woods as a freshman to being a reserve player. Good on him for his continual effort.

Good for Crawford!

I’ve always felt bad for him being injured so much, but I’m glad he didn’t quit.

Tramain Swindall

has had a good body of work and I can’t believe he is a senior already. I think he is one of those kids that Leach would have coached up to be great. It’s almost like his last two years were wasted since apparently our new coaches don’t coach. TS – good job

Scott Smith...

you are a beast. Scott, it looks like you have come to terms with whatever kept you away from football. I wish you continued success as you play on Sundays. You are my favorite player I almost never got to see.

Tyrone Sonier; Donald Langley; Jared Flannel

Tyrone has been very resilient. In and out of the starting squad, he has done his best. Maybe it was not quite as good as someone else, but he has never wavered, despite injuries that kept him off the field at times.

Donald also worked through some injuries, something we have seemingly seen more of the last couple of years than the last five years combined. But, he has worked his way into the starting lineup at times and is a solid player when on the field.

Jared made the move from RB to DB to fill some holes. He also worked tirelessly, despite some injuries, to put forth a nice career. It may not have been A-#1, but his presence was needed several times.

Just three, but I will miss their loyalty and desire to produce as Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Not really

These guys don’t have a PR machine behind them. Their day is getting pissed on by you know who, because of course, its all about the team.
