Recruiting on the South Plains | RB Quinton White

The 19th commitment of the 2012 Texas Tech recruiting class and the first and only running back of the class. I'm sure there's some thought that Texas Tech doesn't need any more running backs, but with the injury to Eric Stephens, Bradley Marquez being moved to receiver and the suspension of Ronnie Daniels, I think that this probably became a higher priority.

Offers and Rankings: White originally committed to Tulsa (my other alma mater) and had been committed to the Golden Hurricanes since the summer. Rivals has White as the 14th best running back, 91st overall, in the state and Scout has him as the 82nd best player in the state. ESPN has him as the 77th best running back prospect and in the 200's as far as the state is concerned. Other offers include the service academies, including Navy, Air Force and Army, La. Tech and obviously, Tulsa. So there's not a huge offer list and not the highest ranked player. I think if you had to compare, this reminds me a bit of De'Andre Washington in that he's not the most highly rated of running back prospects, but he's been awfully effective his high school team. Dave Campbell's Texas Football says that he's one of the top 300 players in the state, but not one of the top 25 running backs.
More after the jump.
The Player Speaks: LAJ's Don Williams spoke with White, who had this to say about the offer to Texas Tech:
"I was nervous, because I didn’t know if Tech was going to offer me," White said. "I’m a smaller running back. I’m not that fast. I originally committed to Tulsa and was pretty solid there. Then I got the offer today and was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. It’s for real.’"
Snip.
"I like their offense," White said, "and (receiver) Detron Lewis went there who was a graduate from A&M Consolidated. I like what they did with him. It’s a good program to be in, and Tommy Tuberville’s a great head coach."
DMN's Mike Graham spoke with his high school teammate and now fellow Texas Tech commit, J.J. Bynum, about his day and getting an offer from Texas Tech:
"I found out a couple of weeks ago that Tech was looking at it and we had been talking about him coming with us," Bynum told RedRaiderSports.com. "I found some tape and I taped the Double-T on his locker and he told me after I did that, 'I'm not taking that down. If they offer me that's where I'm going to go. We were hoping he'd get an offer that way he could come. He's always wanted to come there since third grade...
"After he committed to Tech he ran through the field house trying to find me. I was on the scale weighing myself and he ran in there and jumped on me. He was almost in tears he was so excited that he had gotten offered and committed to them."
The Video: Film don't lie.
Quinton White 2010 Highlights (via AMCTigers)
Scouting Report: He's awfully slick, is able to make defenders miss by stopping on a dime, I think he'll fit in nicely at Texas Tech. White says that he isn't fast, but that doesn't appear to be the case. He's got plenty of burst and the fact that he's able to make so many plays outside the tackles is a good indication of that speed.
Quinton, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: I haven't had time to update the averages, so I'm leaving them off for now. I need to update some player profiles.

That fact that he was so excited about the offer makes me excited for him.

I like kids who want to be here.
He said he was not very fast, but seems like he out runs everyone. Plus, I love the way he cuts on a dime. Looks like another Batch and ES to me.
Could be a diamond.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Of course you're taller
he’s only 5’8".

It’s good to hear of a kid who really, really wants to be at Tech! I’m already a big fan.

4.40 40 seems fast enough
He is on the smaller side. It looks like he can catch, and he doesn’t stop moving. Looks to be a good pick up we can play him as a RB probably the best fit or even maybe a small IR
the 40 times that scouting services post should be taken with a huge grain of salt-
recall that only a couple players manage to run legit 4.40’s every year at the NFL combine (electronically timed, no pads), but if you believe scouting services, you can’t throw a rock without hitting a dozen 4.40 running backs and receivers coming out of high school. It’s also an overrated metric for football speed, as very few plays actually last over 4 seconds, and quickness within a 15-20 yard window is where you make your money as a back
Just watching him, I’d guess that he can bust 4.5 in pads, but not by much. I like his shiftiness more than his top line speed, but what I do appreciate is that he definitely has a certain patience in his pace when he’s looking for the right hole, but then quickly accelerates to his top end. Looks like he can catch a little bit, too.

I know
I was commenting on the fact he called himself slow. 4.5 is not slow I think Reggie Bush actually runs a 4.5 (don’t quote me). My point is a 4.5 and even a fake 4.4 is fast enough when all you really need as a RB is to beat DEs and LBs then it is a bonus to beat DBs. but yes you did inform me a lot about the 40 times. I prefer a RB who does not quit a la Baron Batch never stopped moving til he was on the ground.
SLIPPERY
Cuts well. good pickup.
Although i was hoping we could get more of these 6’1 230 type of backs that can pound the ball in the red zone. Seems that’s were things are going.
seems fast enough to me.

I like it!
His running reminds me very much of Eric Stephens and that’s a good thing. On another note, you might want to update some of the recruit info Seth if you get a chance. I know Marcus Johnson is now a 4 star on Scout. Not sure if there are any other changes.
Looks like a good back to me!
Happy to have kids with apssion and desire and who want to be Red Raiders! Welcome, Quinton.
I think you always take one rb in every class, just at you do at qb.
White looks plenty fast, whatever his time is. He runs with authority, cuts fast, reads blocks, accelerates and overall looks like a good rb.
Welcome to the Raider Nation !

I don’t think that gaining a commitment is anything like that. Its usually the work of the position coaches, in this case Tommy Mainord, who are working on getting commitments. Coaches can’t comment on commitments until Signing Day anyway.

Seth can you shed a little light on what's up with the LBs in this class
I was hoping we’d start seeing more guys in the 6’3 / 230-250 range (Tank Carder/Tanner Brock-sized).

I wish I had a answer, but I’m guessing that they feel guys that can project to get bigger is what they want. I don’t have a lot of time, but last year TCU recruited 2 linebackers (6-2/205 and 6-1/220) and the year before 2 LB’s (6-1/216 and 6-4/225). TTU’s still seem a bit small in comparison.

Double-T Nation
yeah
Just seems like two of them would project better as Safeties at the college level, and then Williams plays WR right now so other than his size there’s really no telling how he’ll turn out.
