Report | Tommy Tuberville Fires Matt Moore, Sam McElroy and Otis Mounds
I don't think that there is any reason to doubt CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman, who broke the news that offensive line coach Matt Moore, defensive line coach Sam McElroy and defensive backs coach Otis Mounds were all fired yesterday. The LAJ's Don Williams got quotes from head coach Tommy Tuberville, who said:
"I don’t know where he gets all that from," Tuberville said. "There’ll be some changes, but I haven’t reported number or names or anything."
Maybe I should have known this a long time ago, but the coaching profession is a fraternity. They all know each other, they sometimes like each other, but they all talk to each other. It's not a surprise that Feldman broke the news as I play Two Degrees of Bruce Feldman, Moore most likely told Leach, who most likely told Feldman. It's just a guess, but I think that's a likely scenario.
In any event, I do not doubt the information. LAJ's David Just confirmed with Mounds and it appears that various players have confirmed via Twitter, SS Terrance Bullitt confirms all three are gone.
Last year I think I spent a lot of time on trying to figure out who Tuberville would hire as his defensive coordinator and I was never even close. Chad Glasgow was not on any of the reported lists, so I won't even try to speculate who Tuberville will find to replace them. I'm guessing that Glasgow will be able to hire a couple of 4-2-5 guys on the defensive side of the ball, something that he should have been able to do when he was hired.
I think the termination of Moore was a difference of opinion more than anything else. I think there's a lot of talk between a zone and man scheme, but any good offensive line coach worth his salt can coach both and I'm sure that Moore is worth his salt. The more I think about it, the thought of a zone vs. man scheme is a bit overrated in that a line can morph between a zone or man scheme depending on what the defense presents. In pass-block protection, it's about finding your man and in running the ball, I don't have a big problem with a team utilizing both zone and man schemes. So, I'm guessing that this isn't a question as to whether or not Moore is qualified, I think he's proven that he is, but a question of how these parts were working together.
The same could be said about McElroy and Mounds. I'm guessing that Glasgow and Tuberville tried to figure out which defensive position coaches were expendable and these really are the only options. Linebackers and defensive ends coach Robert Prunty isn't an option because he is valuable to Tuberville for the mere fact that his name is mentioned as recruiting 5 of the 16 players committed, LB Kris Williams, DE Desimon Green, DL Michael Starts, LB Micah Awe and DB La'Darius Newbold. Tuberville's biggest problem is that Moore was in charge of recruiting WR Reginald Davis and McElroy was in charge of WR Dominique Wheeler. Those are two of the most important players in the 2012 class, although I'm sure that Sonny Cumbie and Tommy Mainord have relationships with both of them, but this is one of the biggest risks of letting McElroy and Moore go. The biggest risk was that I think that Moore and McElroy were both competent/good position coaches and I'm not confident that Tuberville will hire the proper replacements.
I feel bad for McElroy and Mounds as from all accounts McElroy was just the type of guy that Tuberville needed on the staff due to the fact that he is very knowledgable of Texas high schools and small colleges. Those are inroads that Tuberville didn't have the luxury to make when he was hired and by hiring McElroy, this gave Tuberville some instant credibility. Mounds was probably hired to be the position coach way too soon in his career. Mounds played for Tuberville and was at St. Thomas Aquinas as the secondary coach there. If you want to say that Tuberville has whiffed on two of his assistant coach or coordinator jobs, then James Willis and Otis Mounds should lead that list. And Mounds was most likely hired to recruit and he didn't have one single commitment from this year's class and considering how bad the cornerbacks were this year, this was an easy choice. Mounds will land on his feet back in Florida, but he shouldn't have had to uproot his famiy for a year.
To wrap up, I won't try to make any guesses as to who the replacements will be, but Tuberville should let OC Neal Brown and DC Chad Glasgow make these hires. All of these coaches have their rear on the line this year so Tuberville needs to trust the guys he hired to run his offenses and defenses and not dictate to them who they'll have to work with, which would include learning a system and teaching that system to the players.

Too little, too late, deck chairs, Titantic, rearranging
are just a few of the words that come to mind. It is reasonable to expect that a big-time, high-profile HC like Tuberville would have hit the ground running, day-one, with a superior staff of experienced coaches. Instead he cobbled together a mixed bag, including under-qualified former players. Now two years down the road, he’s hitting the reset button. Write it down…he will use this as an excuse if this year’s recruiting class turns out to be a disappointment.
But all that said, I’m glad to see that he’s doing something. Let the OC and DC put their guys in place and see if they can get this ship turned around.

Recruiting
If these coaching changes result in a “lesser” class of 2012, then it’s just another nail in the coffin. So far, Tubby has done one thing right in his 2 years at Tech. If he loses Davis and Wheeler…..well, let’s just say the fat lady is warming up.
The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.
My guess is that he's already lost Davis and Wheeler, but
wanted that word to hit the street BEFORE he fired the coaches.
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
Both those recruits...
make or break this class. WE need them like medicine at this point. If they are off the radar Tommy is done as a coach and next season is just a waste.

I too believe this class is going to fall apart. Last year I was so optimistic.
I was so excited about our class last year. I didn’t expect anything more than 8-4, and would have settled for 7-5.
This graph is moving in the wrong direction really fast. These two guys are probably our only option to spread the field next year. But, in the end I guess it does not matter because Tommy does not know what to with speed anyway.
Look at the rabbit. If he was playing at Oregaon, he would 1,000 all purpose yards out of the backfied easily. He would have been a super fantastic replacement for Amandola and The Elf at receiver.
This is like watching the Titantic all over again.

Couldn't agree with your more about McRabbit.
The dude is a game changer. It’s the responsibility of the coaches to find a way to get him into the game where he can be successful.

Nah
guys like Amendola, elf, and Mcrabbit arent the kind of players Tubs recruits. They didn’t have enough stars by their names to truly contribute.

This is another recruit that this class really needs. Losing him would be awful.

Briles is a winner
I remember wondering “what the hell is going on at Stephenville” when they began beating Brownwood.
It’s now obvious after Briles turned around Houston and now Baylor.
Very strong coaching abilities.
Now you know why they are so pissed about the Big 12 Falling Apart.
That is what leadership does when you have something to sell. You scream, kick, and raise hell to protect your assets.
The reason Bailey and Hance did not say shit, simply put, We have nothing to sell anymore. Therefore, lets try and live off of Mike Leach reseves. Now, I think that is really funny.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
it's funny...
I specifically remember people complaining that he hadn’t done anything worth noting when we were in the HC hiring process. Briles was my first choice to replace Leach… but no one thought he was competent. It’s amazing how time brings clarity.
Go back and look at the threads, I too wanted Briles. Baylor is very lucky.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
I'll agree Briles
is great at turning around programs, bringing in recruits, and winning his fair share of games…..BUT he is an AWFUL in game coach. Not quite as bad as Tub(b)y but close. He basically recruited the best player in Baylor history along with some really good receivers. That is the reason for the Baylor success. Their defense is so bad its just a notch above Tech’s. His defense’s at Houston were equally as bad. Also, dont forget the kids who passed out in the Taco Bell drive through playing the next game fiasco. Briles has his warts.
"Odds are its something simple" - @Coach_Leach
Well, we will find out next year after RGIII is gone.
Kind of like life without Crabtree. Something tells me thought he is going to do all right. I want to shoot some Bear next year, but we are the new Baylor until we get our turn around specialist.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
I knew Mounds needed to go.
As mentioned by someone earlier, he was hired to pull in his nephew. Nephew decided on Florida. I haven’t seen where he’s added value to anything.
Moore and McElroy? Not sure about these guys. I will say, I don’t mind seeing a change to our staff. I’m somewhat surprised there aren’t rumblings about Cumbie.
The Titanic metaphor is getting old...
maybe we could think of some other famous shipwrecks… the Estonia, the Lusitania, the Arizona…
Needs something more modern.
I am thinking after 2009 or so? I am sure there is a list somewhere.
BP oil spill?

pretty good... the Deep Water Horizon...
And Moore, McElroy and Mounds just took a chopper off the platform…

I like the oil spill analogy
A non-problem if handled correctly, but a debacle if bungled. It isn’t rocket science, so there should be no trouble cleaning it up- until you get the wrong people to do it, and it gets messier.

I think there is a hazard here.
I have considered this for a day now and I am a little worried.
We may bring in someone with good talent and great reputation, who totally does not fit the way things are done here and could end up making things worse.
In other words, someone like NB, who I think is pretty good, but does poorly when it’s time to be Tub’s puppet. We can’t have a Chinese fire-drill every time Tubs farts and expect to get things done.
That means- high caliber types who are oblivious to dysfunction, but when does that become too much of a good thing? We’ve already got Tubs and Hocutt, so…
I think the problem is...
and all the clues point to the fact that our Athletic Department is being “run” by the (or at least being overly influenced) by our Chancellor and BOR’s….and has been since Dec. 30, 2009.
When that happens HC’s and AD’s start panicking and making really bad decisions…..unfortunately we seem to share this attribute right now with the aggy…….
And consider the other coaching staffs in the Big 12
Excluding Kansas, is there any other coaching staff in the “new” Big 12, you would not rather have than Tubs & Co?
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
no... we've been over this...
Leach has already hired 5 offensive coaches, and he’s reached his limit…
his other four coaching hires have to be on the other side of the ball
not what they are reporting at the WSU site
they say he has been hired
Aggies finalizing deal with Sumlim as HC
Read this over on Texags main page. Expect announcement this weekend.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Being that Houston's great success came on the back of Holgerson implementing the Air Raid
Does this mean that Texas A&M will become an Air Raid offense as they join the SEC? That is so very un-Aggie of them. I would be shocked if Texas A&M becomes known for their “wide open offense”. They would be the last school I would expect that at. Their natural conservatism would fight that tooth and nail.
Or maybe they tell Sumlin that they want him but they don’t want the Houston offense. And so they remain mediocre for another half decade.
"Thinking? You may be giving Tuberville too much credit. That head is only there as an ear support system." TechFirst 12/2/2011
For the most part this year, they did have
a wide open offense. Their defense was the problem. But Sumlin isn’t a disciple of the air raid in the sense that it’s “what he does.” He will run the offense that suits the talent on the team. I’d bet the Aggie offense is not much different that it is now.
11/12/11...66-6...I once was blind, but now I see.
I like Sumlin, but it my opinion he is making a really big mistake.
Aggy is built on running the football. If Sumlin changes to sperad offense, he will get killed in the SEC. In my opinion, he should take a job like ASU or Washington. I guess the money might be so good he could not pass it up.
But on the brighter side, if Sumlin goes to Aggy land, then mabye Kliff gets the job, and then we get Kliff on 2013. I could be good with this.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
IMO
Tuberville could have waited until after Christmas to let these coaches go.I mean come on,how do you think these families feel right here before Christmas? This shows me more about Tuberville.I hope he gets this thing turned around. The only thing I am excited about is the talent that is coming back next year.More so on the offensive side of the ball.
I agree that Glasgow needs to make smart hires.I sure hope the conditioning situation is addressed. Is this being done right?Lower body conditioning?it is not rocket science.Better take those signs down in the weight room of the next game and not worry so much about motivation and concentrate on the body.
Better for Coaches
If Tubs knows he is firing these coaches it’s better for the coaches that he does it immediately. This gives them a better chance to find another job before all the vacancies are filled.

Hate to see Moore go
I know not everyone was a fan of his work but for my money he was seriously a wizard with plug and play adjustments on the offensive line. What this does suggest to me is something I kind of saw coming with the new type of OL recruits Tuberville is starting to bring in; we can expect a wholesale change of philosophy in how the offensive line is built and maintained moving forward. McElroy and Mounds are just sacrificial lambs, which sucks because both of them were dealt stacked decks in terms of the personnel available at their positions. No doubt this type of assistant staff shuffle is something we can expect to see a lot more of.
Moore's work seemed just fine when we were setting records for fewest sacks

Maybe the Moore departure has more to do with things other than performance.
It just brings up a bunch of questions, cuz it seems like Moore did a good job under Leach.
Maybe Moore questioned the direction of the Offense during the season.
Maybe Moore was questioning the play calling.
Maybe Moore did not appreciate the apparent dysfunctional play calling – which he felt made his OL look bad.
The offense we all loved is taking one more step to being dismantled.
To try to get a handle on what's really going on..
I think we need to consider Moore’s departure along with the fact that Brown is interviewing for other jobs…

I don't know anything.... I just think with this news about Moore, we are forgetting that NB's been trying to find another job...
So, personally, I think the “change in staff” that Tubs is talking about may involve more than we know right now…
I wouldn’t be surprised if he is trying to move back to an offense he is more comfortable with (more run based)…
All conjecture on my part though…
It just doesn’t make any sense to me that NB was interviewing with UAB… and that Tubs a-ok with that… and that everyone else on offense is just looking to pick back up where they left off…

I agree, this was our transition year to the run game.
I think next year we will see about 40% pass and about 60% run, and by 2013 it will be 30% pass and 70% run, and by then any resemblance to Air Raid will be totally gone. I know its gone already, but at least we still sling it to the side.

My guess is that tubs wanted to improve the run game and Moore has been teaching pass protection for years under leach. He’ll probably get a line coach that specializes in run blocking.

Tuberville Should Fire
and hire who he wants to do the job. Next year will be all his. He’ll get to own it. Man up and get ready with the people you want responsible for your future.
I still have to believe Tubs knows what he’s doing. This isn’t his first rodeo.
The proof will be in the peformance. Get better and win or get ready to move.
