DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-12-15

ODDS AND ENDS | If books aren't your thing then you should check out the two lists of long-reads, here and here. If reading isn't your thing, then check out the year in pictures . . . but with Legos.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | I rarely link to ESPN, but they have an excellent story on Texas Tech signee, Minta Spears, and thought that you'd enjoy it (I did!).
LAJ's David Just has an excellent profile on PG Monique Smalls, who started as a true freshman, and is now a junior:
Smalls says she now understands where and how to get posts Kierra Mallard and Kelsi Baker the ball. She knows how shooting guard Casey Morris catches and shoots from the perimeter. And she can create opportunities to get the ball to Christine Hyde’s strong hand for a powerful drive to the basket.
It may have taken Smalls two years and change — 74 games — to make that happen, but the rewards have been worth it. Tech beat No. 16 Penn State on Dec. 3, is off to an 8-0 start and owns a top-15 ranking for the first time in Curry’s six seasons.
"We’ve tried to stay patient with her and I think she has stayed patient with herself," Curry says. "It’s been a lot of fun to see her evolve into the player she’s becoming."
Go check it out.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL | Per the official site, RHP John Neely was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason second team All-American. Congrats!
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | LAJ's Nick Kosmider profiles F Jordan Tolbert and I had never thought about this, but I thought this was an excellent quote about post players, in particular Tolbert, from head coach Billy Gillispie:
"The best post players score before they catch the ball," Tech coach Billy Gillispie said. "I know that’s impossible, but they position themselves so that when they catch it, the scoring is easy, because all they have to do is catch it with an angle to the basket and lay it in."
I had never thought about that, but this seems like an accurate statement.
I haven't had time to watch this, but remember the basketball team is spending time with local charities and churches and there is some YouTube video from Day 4.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | Wanted to lead off with this, QB Jacob Karam, per the official site, will be a University College Banner Bearer at the fall commencement later this month. What an honor. Congrats!
This is something to put in your Palm Pilot, spring practices start on February 17, 2012 and the spring game is scheduled for March 24, 2012.
The front page on RRS.com says that Texas Tech has two new JUCO commits and from looking at the photos, they appear to be on the same team. Every coach has their own page, and in looking at all of them, Robert Prunty has two players from Riverside C.C. (California) that are targets, LB Will Smith (6-3/220 Rivals profile) and DE Lee Adams (6-3/265 Rivals profile). The official site at Riverside C.C. says that Adams committed, doesn't mention Smith, but also says that WR/KR Sadale Foster (5-8/180 Rivals profile) has also committed, but that doesn't appear to be the story from the front page news on RRS.com.
Apparently Riverside C.C. is a program that was 1-9 in 2009 (I think), but had a great turnaround in 2010 (10-1) and then went undefeated in 2011. This is a pretty good article about how the program has turned around and mentions Smith and Adams. Smith didn't get many looks coming out of high school, but since he's attended Riverside C.C. he had improved his stature, while Adams was originally a signee at Arizona St. that got into some trouble (the article mentions he's had no problems while at Riverside C.C.). I won't have recruiting profiles up this morning, maybe later this weekend.
Also on the JUCO recruiting front, I ran across this article that says that there are four players from Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. that are considering Texas Tech: WR Javon Bell, LB Chris Payne, OL Rashad Fortenberry and QB Raymond Cotton. I still haven't seen anything from RRS.com or RP.com to confirm Bell's commitment, which is why I'm waiting on that profile as well.
I mentioned this yesterday in the comments, but I've talked a bit about roster attrition within an athletics program and obviously, here at DTN we are more at tuned with Texas Tech players leaving. I just wanted to point out that other teams do this too and ran across one about UT, per BON, and one about OU, per CACM. You can call it churning the roster or whatever, but this is essentially players getting cut or their scholarships aren't being renewed and it happens all of the time.
UPDATE I [Note by Seth C, 12/15/11 7:33 AM CST ] KBTX, a Bryan/College Station news station, says that head coach Tommy Tuberville is interested in Texas A&M offensive line coach, Jim Turner as a possible replacement for recently terminated OL coach Matt Moore:
While Tim DeRuyter is the first Texas A&M football assistant to leave, Offensive Line Coach Jim Turner could be packing up his office soon.
Turner has been mentioned as a possible assistant on Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State. KBTX Sports has also learned that Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tubberville may also be interested in Turner's availability.

Thanks for the book list.
I will have to go and read some of those.
I love the Lego builds.
I will have to read the article on Minta Spears later today as work calls.
I will get the write-up for the Lady Red Raider game against Illinois on Saturday posted on Friday.

"I was taught to fight, taught to win" .... "Don’t Give Up"
Great news on the JC transfer possibilities.
Would love to think that we could get Turner, esp. if he is quality for Ohio State. QA$M had a good scheme and a high-scoring offense that had some good balancce between run/pass. they also let their QB roll out of the pocket, and I think that fits Brewer pretty well.
Attrition
As much as I love college football, this is the ugly side that gives me problems. These are kids, that are sold a package so they can play football and hopefully get some education. They leave home, may not peform at 4 star level and then are chased off. I don’t have an easy answer either. They could change the rules and require all scholarships to be a 4 year offer, but then the coaches could treat the unwanted players like hell until they quit. Just had to say, I have sympathy for these players that we put so much pressure on to perform, go to class, and they are only 18-20 years old. And I thought the pressure from my Cost Accounting class with Dr. Cox was bad. P.S. That really ages me.
ut is "The Evil Empire"
I felt your pain then (with Cox), and
and I feel it now. I was reminded of the book “Meat on the Hoof” which was written about the ut program in the 60’s. DKR was infamous for his treatment of unwanted players.
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
Remember that book....
In fact, Gary Shaw (the author and former UT player) came and spoke at the UC in 1973 for—you guessed it—Beat Texas Week! Gave a lot of detail about all the stuff DKR and Co did to run off players (something called “the shit drills”). When asked who he was rooting for, he answered he’d root for the Horns. Also said that some friends of his who played at Tech said that J.T. King was about as bad in trying to run off players he didn’t want.
A little history lesson that, frankly, I’d forgotten. Has it been almost 40 years since I first entered Tech? Oh well, beats the alternative!
Ha Ha!
That’s right. Remember what the Good Book says “rejoice in thy youth”—or something like that. At least that’s what it says at the beginning of the movie “Platoon.”
My brother-in-law’s view on growing older—“Well, it beats the hell out of the alternative!”
Bob Stoops
as much as most people dislike OU and anything associated with it, Bob Stoops will leave you on scholarship even if you don’t play. A promise is a promise to that man.

I heard UT
Imagine Skip Bayless reporting that “I hear that Jacob Karam CAROMED OFF TO UT! Nyuknyuknyuknyuk….” Longtime listeners to The Ticket (KTCK-former employer of Bayless) will recognize that kind of comment as a “Skipshot” or excruciatingly bad pun. Usually followed by an annoying hollow-sounding laugh!
That's a Norm "Dad" joke if I ever heard one.

JUCO QB??
Why in the world would we go after a JUCO QB? It reminds me of a quote by Peter Drucker:
“There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all.”
Sadly, this characterizes this head coach, and his lack of vision and leadership.
The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.
If they have a plan to switch him to WR
It’s ok…..but I have serious doubts about this coaching staff. Can they see that? Maybe I’m a little jaundiced

I’m not sure, Cotton was a 4-star recruit that originally committed to Ole Miss and transferred to S. Alabama before ending up at Miss. Gulf Coast. You can check out his JUCO stats here:
Appears to be more of a runner than a passer. The article also says that he’s just “getting looks” from Texas Tech and doesn’t make it clear that there’s an actual offer or anything like that.

Raymond Cotton....
is a great athlete and Houston Nutt could not figure out what to do with him …..He definitely brings he run-spread not the pass-spread….but hey the more athletes the better….WreckEm Tech
Cam Newton was a JUCO QB
Who knows maybe we will find our Cam Newton or maybe that’s what Tubs hopes he will find in Cotton. Or maybe he will turn into an RB or a WR when he gets here.
he was a 5 star recruit from florida before he went to JUCO
"You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game." Herm Edwards
Cotton was a 4 star
Although he went to Ole Miss, he had offers from Auburn and Arkansas. And interestingly from Troy when Neal Brown was OC there.
Missed the point
Where do we have huge gaps that need to be filled? It’s not at QB or WR.
The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.
My thought would be that you never assume that talent is going to pan out. If you have a chance to upgrade, at least this is my thought, then you upgrade. I don’t know if Cotton would be an upgrade, but I think if he’s a talent, maybe like Robert Johnson, then it might be worth it to take a chance.

Minta Spears
attended the same school as my kids several years ago. In 8th grade, she often joined the HS boys for pre-season shootarounds and pickup games. My son (a JV player at the time) said she could definitely shoot the rock and was quite a handful even back then. Unfortunately, she moved away and we didn’t get to see her play in HS.
She still looks a little frail for the college game at this point, but obviously has the skills. Looking forward to seeing her in a Lady Raider uniform next year.
Sounds like a player!
If she could hang with the HS boys in pickup games, etc, that’s a good sign. After a year or so of weights, Curry will have her ready for the bigtime. BTW, sure enjoyed the article David Just did on Monique Smalls in the AJ. It’s fun watching Smalls grow as a player (especially in the upset of #1 Baylor last year!) and reading the fine work of Mr Just—in a paper that doesn’t always showcase fine work (yes, I’ve been disappointed in Don Williams’ writing lately).
Spears looks well equipped to play Div1 basketball.
She has started working on the physical play part and that is telling about her approach to the game…I see an almost craftsman like approach.
The only concern that I can express about her centers around the speed of the game, her quickness, her ability to adjust to that part of the game.
She does look to be pretty special.

My Sister was all-world power forward coming out of high school and got a basketball and track scholly. At 6’0" and 120 soaking wet, it didnt take her long to decide high jump and hurdles were more fun. There’s some big girls out there banging you around and it hurts to drive the lane sometimes.

Baron's great!
Not many folks that age—or older—with that kind of maturity. Like his stuff. Notice the coachs at one school I work at clipping out his articles and using them in their leadership classes.
Even when I might not agree with him, I respect his views and admire his “inner fire.”
This is good for a laugh

Did anyone notice
Spencer Hall was channeling SARR in his “senative” article? I think I seen it all now.

BTW...
where is SARR? Haven’t seen him lately, or maybe I’m not paying attention.
Word has it
He’s applied and interviewed to be Webmaster of two or three other sites. While his material is edgy, and often successful, there’s a general feeling that he may lack the necessary experience to run a big-time college sports blog.
