Recruiting on the South Plains | DE Lee Adams
The commits may be coming fast and furious over the next day or two considering there are allegedly a handful of JUCO players that are in Lubbock this weekend. Adams, LB Will Smith (I am hoping for a lot of extra Google hits from typing this name over the course of the next 2 years) and WR Sadale Foster, all from Riverside C.C. which just went undefeated in 2011. There's also the though as in the linked LAJ article below, that teammate CB Bruce Jones could also commit if offered this weekend. Riverside C.C. has a lot of talented players, including LB Zaire Anderson who is committed to Nebraska.
And all of that was just Friday night. Over the weekend, Texas Tech received a de-commitment from OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who ended up re-committing to TCU. I don't know why, but I wish this wasn't true.
Texas Tech did get commitments from Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. players WR Javon Bell, OL Rashad Fortenberry and LB Chris Payne. Then, I think yesterday Texas Tech got a commitment from Pierce C.C. FS Austin Stewart, which is the same JUCO as CB Kasseim Everett. To say that it was a busy weekend would be an understatement. I'll be getting to recruiting profiles on all of these players, but please don't expect recruiting profiles on all of these players until the end of next week.
Let's get to Adams' profile.

JUCO: Riverside C.C. (Riverside, CA)
Offers and Rankings: As you all know, ESPN doesn't rank or rate most, if not all, JUCO's, and 24/7 Sports is the only site that actually seems to rank JUCO's and Adams is ranked as the #60 DE in the country and the #22 JUCO player in California.
Adams had offers from Colorado, Duke, UCLA, Boise St. and Washington as far as major programs although there are some smaller schools that have offered Adams as well. Remember that Adams originally committed to Arizona St., but got into some trouble by allegedly stealing some stuff with a teammate and was dismissed from the team.
The Player Speaks: LAJ's Don Williams spoke with all of the Riverside C.C. teammates, and here's what Adams had to say:
"Personally, I was going to commit before they offered the rest of my teammates," Adams said. "But once they did that, it just made me feel that much more confident about my decision."
Adams doesn't speak in this article, but it does mention the fact that he had trouble at ASU, but has apparently been a model citizen at Riverside C.C.:
Defensive end Lee Adams, who originally followed the Corona Centennial-to-Arizona State pipeline, left ASU after a breaking-and-entering allegation with teammate Jamil Douglas and a subsequent suspension. He is said to have been the model of decorum at RCC, and already appears to be getting interest from other Division I schools.
More after the jump.
The Video: I can't find any video specific to Adams, but I did find the Riverside C.C. athletics department YouTube channel which has highlights of just about every game. I didn't spend much time looking at the film, but if you want to look, he's #91 for the team.
UPDATE | Found some video of Adams on Hudl from Riverside C.C. and it's impressive. He plays mostly at tackle, but he lines up at defensive end as well and he's definitely quick enough to play defensive end. In fact, the quickness and tenacity exhibited in his film is incredibly encouraging. Adams has power and explosiveness and he has speed. I wasn't sure what to expect if I were to have found his film, but I'm more than pleasantly surprised.
Scouting Report: For the year for Riverside C.C., Adams had 40 tackles, 12.0 TFL and 7.0 sacks. I hate trying to give some sort of scouting report when I haven't seem him play, so I won't. What I think we can talk about is the fact that Adams would seem to be the size that you'd want at defensive end although due to the fact that guys like Kerry Hyder, who I think wore down at the end of the year, is also his size, leads me to think that he could play defensive tackle, but I think the defensive line needs more size and would love to see Adams stay at defensive end. There may be a bit of a logjam at defensive end, with Jackson Richards, Dartwan Bush, Aundrey Barr and Leon Mackey all being candidates to play.
Lee, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: I'm not going to update the table just yet, but see the latest recruiting table here, sans the recent JUCO commits.

Re: Vaitai decommitment
Another site reported that Vaitai’s mother is suffering from “not-insignificant health issues” and that he decided that he wanted to stay closer to home. Also that the decommitment did not come as a total susprise to Tech in that he had been upfront about the issue.
Obviously, I do not know if this is the actual reason. But, I thought I would add the info.
Matt Moore
He would have come if Matt Moore was still around.
This is why I try not to hyper-ventilate during the recruiting season

I'm sure he would like to be closer to home under these conditions...
and I am sure a 5-7 record does not help either. We need 8-9 wins next year in a bad way.

DL size
I agree with you Seth we need some big nastys for DTs not some 260lb converted DE. This is one reason why teams ran all over us. With out big DTs our two line backers in the 4-2-5 get picked off very easily leaving a RB and easy 5-10 yards per carry.
Tubs had mentioned when he came in that he prefers speed to size on defense
So, recruiting a heavier D will be against that philosophy. After seeing the debacle of this season, I hope his perspective has changed though. Although, I still doubt that personnel were the major issue this season, I suspect it was coaching and game planning. We will see.
Speed to Size...
are great philosophies in general. It works great for skill positions, however on the DL (at least at the tackle spot), you’ve got to have size and strength, otherwise you see the outcome that we just had to endure. Having a DT or 2 that can close up gaps in the middle is essential for any runstopping defense. 6-2’’ 260-275lb tackles will not cut it. OL’s are too big and strong nowadays, especially in the Big 12 & SEC.

hit the nail on the head.
Olineman are way to athletic and strong these days for a 260-275 DT. I want something 285-300. They might be slower but just have faster guys on the outside and force them to get 0-2 yards per carry instead of 5-10.
I don't see where a smaller faster DT helps you at all
They are pushing a 300-350lb guy in front of them, maybe a foot or two, so a 4.4-4.6 means squat.
How fast can you push a 300+lb guy around? thats DT speed.
i like lose women
With Hyder a good example of a small DT and an HS recruit
It is worth watching his size and strength increase over the course of his career at TTU.
Is he as big as he is going to be ? Or as strong ? I think he will certainly gain strength.

I think Hyder wore down as the season progressed and I think he would have been okay if there was a deeper rotation of players. Hyder is a good player but he needs about 30 snaps or so with some other guys filling in the gaps. I too think he will only get stronger as he was only a sophomore and think we will see a better version if he has some more help.

That makes sense, Seth.
We often talk about a player as if he is what he is going to be.
There is a reason coaches like juniors and seniors on their teams, it is maturity, strength, endurance, and workmanship like ability to execute…plus a little leadership.
Hyder was a pup this season, his best football is ahead of him. The need for a good rotation with depth on the DL is key to anchoring a defense, but we all know that.

SIZE + STRENGTH
We all know we need size, and I’m glad it’s coming. Until we have a couple of 300 pounders @ the tackle spots, we’re going to continue to get run over. Whoever’s coming in (JUCO or from the HS ranks), and whoever is on the current roster needs to be fed a steady diet of Big Mac’s. I forsee a hybrid 4-2-5 w/a 4-3 combo now that Tuberville has a couple of his S. Miss. cronies in camp. Stopping the run will be modus operandi for next year – or else! How bout’ stealing a blueprint from your buds @ LSU and Bama’ Tommy?!
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
Big Difference
LSU and Bama have the luxury of having it both ways. They have the kind of talent on the D-line that we dream about – size, strength, and speed. It’s unlikely these kinds of recruits will come to Tech. But until they do, Tubs must do what Leach and his staff did so well – maximize what you have. That’s what is missing. Anybody can coach 5 star guys. Mack Brown has proven that. But who can coach 3 star guys and mold them into NFL prospects?
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
or you can line up, find the ball, and tackle the sombitch that is carrying it.

do not ever equate me with "bobby".....
he is like the bass boat I got about 10 years ago……so happy when i got it……happier when i got rid of it.

True...
We’re not going to get what LSU, Alabama, Florida or even Texas get, however I agree that you need to maximize and coach up what you do bring in. TCU is the model for getting the best out of 2-3 star recruits – imagine what they’ll do w/higher star recruits now that they’re eating at the big boy table?! Scary.
Obviously it’s coaching and to your point, this defensive carousel hasn’t done anything with what we have. And that’s the most frustrating thing of all. I will remain optomistic that this new set of coaches makes a difference. If not, then we stay mediocre and continue to rotate coaches in and out every 3-4 years just like ATM. God bless us.

I think the other part of this is that Patterson has had a decade to get his players and develop what he wants in terms of a system. I don’t know that Tuberville will have that sort of time but Patterson has had quite a bit more time to get the system and type of players he wants.

The 4-2-5
Just spoke to 2 ex-TCU players (LB & Safety) who both played for Glasgow and I told them to please go teach those boys in Lubbock how to play D and tackle. Jokingly they said the defense players @ Tech were stupid, but their real answer was that the 4-2-5 is a VERY complicated defense and that it’s going to take at least 2 years to learn. They both said give it time and they’ll pick it up and should see noticable differences beginning next year (w/all the new JUCO’s coming in, this may set us back even more.) My only question is, how long will CG have if Tech doesn’t do well and Tubby is fired. We will see.

going to to 4-3?
around noon, Level tweeted that Adams told Brandon Rawe that Tech was likely going to a 4-3 next year.

It was suspected and somewhat telegraphed...
after the Ole Miss hires (coaches) that it would eventually convert to a 4-2/4-3 hybrid. It’s what Tommy wanted all along, and what he’s most comfortable with, but thought the 3-4 would work in the Big 12. Then he experimented w/the 4-2-5 and realized it’s complexity (based on Seth’s analysis earlier this year and after speaking to some TCU players and last seasons results.)
It makes perfect sense to keep 7 or 8 in the box if you have undersized lineman (mainly DT’s). You focus on stopping the run, hope you get a consistent pass rush for disruption, and gamble with your DB’s in man coverage.
I mean, I get TT’s thought process – focus on your biggest weakness (rush defense) and let eveything else play itself out and hope you can squeeze out 7-8 wins next year. I know this sounds unrealistic based on the last 2 years, BUT think about this, you supposedly brought in tenured coaches with mucho experience, you have strong recruiting classes and are picking some top JUCO talent. If you get the players buy-in, because it’s always tricky with a 18, 19 and 20 year old psyche, it can be a receipe for success.
Coach knows he’s on the hotseat and that either motivates you for success or buries you. I’m gambling on motivation.

Something Smells Wrong here?
This reminds me of when I worked for consulting company. When staffing a new gig I would be told just need 10 butts in the seat; did matter if they where qualified programmers just needed butts in the seat …. It would then take months\ year or more to run off the unqualified programmers.
… I just get the impression we are giving 3 scholarships for 1 player…. are we the only DIV 1 school willing do that ? … so when Tubs leaves next year how is this screwing up long term recruiting? Is this College Football Version of the Mavericks 1 year contract ?
