Addressing the Report that Glasgow Was Fired, the Return to the 4-3 and the New Offensive Line Coach
I don't have a lot of time this morning. Certainly not enough time to address all of the things going on in my head in regards to the initial Twitter from CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman who reported that defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow had been fired, then the Twitter response from Texas Tech's Blayne Beal saying that Glasgow was not fired and will not be fired. I think I'm becoming more and more suspicious as time wears on, but I do believe there's a reason why this report was reported yesterday, which is the day before JUCO players can sign. It's the same reason why the somewhat caustic contract situation with Oklahoma St. and Mike Gundy has been so public the last couple of days. Someone, I don't know who, is looking to gain an advantage.
The other big question, which is if Glasgow is or will be fired and I don't have a clue. LAJ's Don Williams wrote an article last night summarizing the above and also saying that some of the Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. players that would sign today said that Texas Tech would be running the 4-3 next year. I don't know who said it in the comments, but it was something to the effect of that Glasgow may still be employed, but he's no longer the defensive coordinator. FootballScoop had these two tidbits yesterday and I've put them in what I think is chronological order:
Texas Tech: Multiple sources telling us of an assistant leaving Tech. We are in the process of confirming. Would be very surprising to us unless he has something excellent lined up.
Texas Tech: Bruce Feldman just reported that Tommy Tuberville has released defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow. We were told a slightly different version; but regardless it looks like Glasgow will be moving on. Bright young coach.
This makes me think that there was some smoke there, but Glasgow may have been told recently , that Texas Tech would be returning to what Tuberville knew the best, and it's also not a surprise that new secondary coach John Lovett was recently the defensive coordinator at Miami two years ago, which also ran the 4-3, and that Glasgow had a choice: play along and run the 4-3 or find another job. Complete conjecture on my part, but there's too much smoke to ignore.
I have no doubt that if it turns out that it's true, that Glasgow is still the defensive coordinator, I am sure that Tuberville will say that the 4-3 and the 4-2-5 are essentially the same defense, that this is a natural progression and that Glasgow is fine with doing this. The first part of this is true in that I do think that the transition will be relatively easy and it may be the same defense, especially if Terrance Bullitt plays linebacker, but Glasgow may be the defensive coordinator in title only. This will be the fourth defensive scheme (4-3 to 3-4 to 4-2-5 to 4-3) this team will employ in as many years. That's not good and it's the exact opposite of consistency
In other football news, it appears that Tuberville has hired Texas A&M Offensive line coach Jim Turner. You can read Turner's biography on the TAMU website. Turner has essentially been an offensive line coach since the 2004 season, at Delaware and moved to Boston College before going to TAMU in 2008. Turner has worked with Sherman and although Sherman doesn't run the spread, Turner has experience with multiple offensive sets, from 10 personnel to 22 personnel, much like the Ole Miss candidate. I'm happy with this hire, especially considering how the offensive line performed for TAMU over the course of the last few years, a top 20 rushing offense and the line that gave up the fewest sacks in the nation.

Mixed Feelings
I’m unhappy with the lack of consistency. I’m unhappy with the coaching turnover. I’m unhappy with the absence of a coherent philosophy/ strategy.
I’m concerned that the OC (after two seasons, based on interviews at UMass, Arkansas State, UAB) and the DC (after one season, based on the sudden change in defense to a 4-3, his seemingly limited input into the new hires, and recent news of his possible departure/reassignment) seem to be coming to the end of the road.
I expected far more from a coach of TT’s caliber. It’s hard not to get the sense that TT is grasping at straws.
That said, we are where we are, and I would rather see TT making adjustments then sitting tight for the sake of being consistent.
Coaching Changes
The changes suggest to me that TT actually sees that poor coaching is part of the problem (if talent and injuries really were the root of the problem, we would not be seeing the high number of coaching changes).
Despite all of the handwringing and TT’s excuse making during the season, we only experienced one major injury loss last year (Stephens). Otherwise, the injuries were par for the course or occurred in the last game or two of the year when the season had virtually been determined.
The blowout losses we experienced were not a result of lack of talent (our offense was one of the most experienced in the conference) or due to injuries.
I think TT also realizes that something else was going on.
I like the new hires, but without a consistent philosophy their talents will be wasted (as an assistant to Sherman, I’m sure Turner knows the feeling all too well).
JUCOS
I don’t have a huge issue with JUCOs. Historically we’ve done well in that department (R. Johnson, D. Howard, B. Sharpe, J Hansen to name a few). I’m not sure if this staff (what remains and the newcomers) has the same ability to leverage talent.
I think the shift to bringing in JUCOs en masse is surprising. It was only a few weeks ago that TT said he would build his teams primarily through recruiting high school kids over JUCOs.
Our Schedule Next Year (So Far)
Home: Kansas
Away: Texas State, New Mexico, Iowa State
TBD: West Virginia, TCU, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas State, final game TBD (probably an FCS team)
I count a maximum of 6 winnable games on that schedule (including the TBD FCS team).
(Remember when 2012 was the year we were supposed to open against Alabama?)
Yes, I want to believe, but if the HC doesn’t know what he believes, what exactly am I supposed to believe?

Why are we
playing New Mexico away two years in a row? And what are your six wins? I only see three or maybe four.

Spot on
My feeling exactly about this current situation. You can almost guarantee that this staff is scambling. I wouldn’t want to be an employee of Tuberville’s right now.

You think something else was going on like maybe the team quit on Tommy.
I despise Tommy and can’t wait for the day his tenure ends at Tech.

Yes
Especially in the Texas, I-State, and Okie-State games. The team, and by definition the coaching staff with them, just quit.
Other games were encouraging, as the team kept playing and competing – like the K-state, A&M and Baylor games.
But I really hated it when I saw Tubby quit in those games. That’s when I said to myself – - – this guy does not deserve this job.

London, I have a hard time agreeing with this part of your fine perspective.
Despite all of the handwringing and TT’s excuse making during the season, we only experienced one major injury loss last year (Stephens). Otherwise, the injuries were par for the course or occurred in the last game or two of the year when the season had virtually been determined.
I think we were riddled with injury and that was reflected on the field in terms of consistency for learning to play a particular position by players who were shuffled around in order to plug holes, as well as consistency for teaching as there were new people trying to get up to speed for a particular game.
There seemed to be some enthusiasm circumstances as well, we saw a major drop off in what looked like want to or desire to play good team football.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Agreed..
We lost totally/ or never had back at 100%:
- WR : Moore
- RB: Stephens
#1/2 DE: Mackey - Center: Keown
- center: Morales
- DB: Porter
- DB/LB: Bullitt
- RB: Daniels (suspension)
- Return Man McCroy
These all happened early or mid way, and I’m sorry but you consider that list, and if you think that is “par for the course” I would like to see you back that up with facts.
Later in the season we lose:
- RB Washington
- WR Torres
Another starting O-Lineman

I would venture to say...
That beyond Doege and Scott Smith…..there is no one on that list that our success did not hinge on.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Sure
I’ve been perplexed about this injury excuse/rationale for some time. As you well know TTUMAR, I try my hardest not throw out statements that I can’t back up (although, I’m not always successful). So I did a little research (although I admit it is not perfect).
Rather than making the blanket statement that we suffered from a lot of injuries, I think we have to acknowledge that not all injuries are equal:
- Injuries to key starters are more impactful than injuries to reserves
- Injuries to veteran contributors are more impactful than injuries to underclassmen.
- Season ending injuries that occur at the beginning of the year are more impactful than season ending injuries that occur at the end of the year
- Season ending injuries are generally more impactful than injuries which cause a player to miss a couple of games
- Injuries to key players are more impactful than injuries to role players, whose services can be substituted by other reserves.
It also stands to reason that starters, because they play the most, are also most prone to injuries – a fact of life for virtually every team.
You no doubt understand this logic.
Here is a clip from my response to an earlier thread that addresses the injury rationale (please note that the list is far from perfect, but I think it is the correct way to assess the impact of injuries on a team).
In looking at this year’s injury report, we only had one major injury to one major player, and that was to our talented RB Eric Stephens. According to the excellent source (collegeinjuryreport.com – you have to register, but it’s free), our injuries were reported as follows:
Note: Q = questionable, P = probable, OFS = out for season, MG = Missed Games , D = Doubtful
Week 1: 0 injuries
Week 2: 0 injuries
Week 3: 2 injuries: Swindall, Knee Q; Crawford, Thigh Q
Week 4: 3 injuries: Crawford, Hamstring P; Carpenter, Head Q; Keown Knee MG
Week 5: 2 injuries: Mackey, Lung P; Davis, Head Q
Week 6: 0 injuries
Week 7: 0 injuries
Week 8: 2 injuries: McRoy, multiple D; Moore Knee, D
Week 9: 4 injuries: Keown, Knee P; Langley, Knee Q; Franks, Ankle Q; Mays, Hamstring D
Week 10: 1 injury: Bullitt, Shoulder, D
Week 11: 1 injury: Dees, Ankle, Q
Week 12: 1 injury: James, Ribs, Q
Week 13: 2 injuries Crawford, Ankle, Q; Edwards, Knee, D
Out for the Year/ Date of injury:
Torres/ Final Game
DeAndre Washington/ Final Game
Tre Porter/ 11th game
Pete Robertson/ Fourth game (Robertson was a reserve RS Fr)
Tanner Foster/ Fourth game (Foster was a reserve JR LB)
Eric Stephens/ Fifth Game
T Morales/ Preseason (Freshman Center)
Let’s analyze the list to the key contributors who missed more than one game due to injury by order of impact:
Stephens: Season ending, Game 5. Our biggest loss.
Mackey: Lung, 2 games?
Moore: 3 games?
The other injuries were to reserves or to underclassmen or to other players where we had serviceable backups. For example, our productivity did not seem to decline noticeably when Keown, Langley, Franks or James missed a game or two during the season.
When Keown was injured, McDaniel, Carpenter and Gallington filled in admirably, which is what you expect from your maturing backup linemen.
Because our receiving corp is so deep, temporary losses of James and Franks were not that noticeable. I am not completely sold on the impact of Moore’s injury, because other than his performance against Baylor’s equally porous defense, he did not really shine against more talented teams. Nevertheless, when he played early in the season against less talented competition, prior to his injury, he played well.
Langley was a a reserve DE/DL on a defence that struggled before and after his injury.
Similarly, when Mackey was healthy we gave up a bazillion rushing yards to Texas State just like we did against our competition after his injury.
Based on this assessment, it is my view that the injuries we suffered (with the exception of Stephens) was “par for the course.”
You also have to look at these injuries to see how they specifically contributed to drubbings at the hands of Iowa State, Texas, Oklahoma State, Baylor etc.
We may still have lost those games, but the margins of defeat suggest that there was more going on than just a bump to Davis’ noggin.

And by definition I AM trying to minimize the injury discussion from the great big giant balloon of an excuse that has been offered without sufficient substantiation.
I am trying to get to the bottom of where the injuries specifically hurt us, and that’s the point of putting a list like this, however imperfect, together.
I don’t suggest that my approach is correct, but I think it’s closer to the truth than what we’ve been sold so far.

I hear you...
I think for me, if you would have told me that my #1 RB, #1WR, #1 Center, #1 DE, #1 DB would all go down with injuries that most would not return from, and i would lose my #2RB to suspension…..I would have taken 5 wins then and there. We may have the worst coach in D1, we certainly have some of the worst assistants…..but no team, with our depth wins eight with the roster that finished our season. Just my opinion.

A little grade inflation?
#1 RB
Check
#2 WR
Moore was not our #1 WR, he was our #3 WR
Ward had 81 catches in 12 games (6.7 catches per game).
Moore had 47 catches in 9 games (5.2 catches per game).
Moore’s best games were against Texas State and New Mexico.
Out of 60 possible starts, our top 5 receivers missed a total of 4 starts. This does not seems unreasonable to me.
#1 Center
Check. Keown missed the first three games, all which we won. Keown was hurt against OU, a game which we won. Keown played hurt all year and was a warrior. Nevertheless, the team’s production did not fall off while he was out of the line up.
#2 Center
If you want to consider Tony Morales, a true freshman center who never played in college a critical loss to the team, feel free. If you believe a healthy Morales would have played instead of Gallington, McDaniel or Carpenter, that’s fine too.
#1 DB & #2 DB
I’m not sure who you are referring to here. We had five starters. In order of tackles:
1. Cody Davis (93 tackles) – missed one game.
2. DJ Johnson (83 tackles) – missed zero games
3. Terrance Bullitt (56 tackles) – missed zero games
4. Tre Porter (24 tackles) – missed 5 games, but was he our number one DB?
5. Derreck Mays – (20 tackles) – missed 2 games, but was he our number two DB?
6. Jarvis Phillips (16 tackles) – missed zero games
So out of 60 possible starts by our to 5 starting DBs, 8 games (5 by one player) were missed due to injury. This does not seem an unreasonable total.
#2 RB?
Are you referring to true freshman Ronnie Daniels, who played in one game and had 9 carries for 43 yards, and was later suspended?
Among our top 3 backup RBs (Williams, Crawford, Washington), Williams was the only one to miss any games (he missed two)

Lot of black and white in your post.
Bottom line, every key contributor to our team except, Doege, Smith, and Carona went down with serious injuries, and most did not return anywhere near 100% that was my point, don’t see anything here that refutes that, do you?

Here's what you are missing
Injuries linger. The player is never “fully recovered” until next season. And sometimes even more than one off-season is required to compeletely rehabilitate the player.
This is especially true of “skill position” players like RB’s, QB’s and WR’s. A perfect example is Crabtree. Look at his performance and production before and after his ankle injury. Like night and day. The same can be said for Moore this season. Again, another ankle injury, and the production before and after was dramatic. He just was not the same player, especially if he had to push-off on the injured ankle. I’m sure if you break down the other players, you will see a parallel.
You may have “the facts”, but “the truth” is deeper than that. And as your movie reference implies – - can you handle the truth?
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
I accept that injuries linger
My point is that the injuries we suffered, with the exception of Stephens, do not appear to be overwhelmingly different than those of other teams or even previous teams.
All teams have injuries, all injuries linger. When those injuries occur often determines how long those injuries will linger.
I would like to find out the truth as well. I find that looking at facts is usually a good place to start.
I’m trying to go through the roster and determine how any of these injuries led to multiple blowout losses over the second half of the year.
I am struggling to find a meaningful connection.
Based on the multiple coaching firings by TT, it appears he and I share a similar view on this point.

point is..
Injuries happen, bad calls happen, penalties happen…every team in the Big 12 can point to injuries that hurt their team…Good teams, well coached teams…..overcome…bad teams, bad coached teams…make excuses.
Aggy was down to their 3rd string RB, Longhorns were down to their 4th string RB, OU had to use a walk-on at RB…….I believe they ALL had better records than we did.
i long for the old days….when we had no “injuries” at Texas Tech.
I hope these changes will fix coaching problems from this past season
TT has to make changes and i am glad he is for 2 reason
1. it might be the necessary difference to get us back on the winning track
2. he cannot delay his own firing by doing this next year … but i supposed he can always ask for more time to allow the changes to take hold, but the counter to that would be why didn’t this happen 2 years ago as he isn’t a brand new head coach
i say move along and if necessary move on
listening to sports radio
Talk about the 49ers yesterday, and I had one of those “duh!” moments. It’s been the Niners defense that has kept them in games. They don’t have a great QB but have a solid running attack. The problem is that if the Niners ever get down by more than 2 scores they are screwed, because they lack the ability to move the ball down field quickly ie Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees style.
I feel that is where we were at. I am perfectly fine with run first, control the game, make them work. However, none of those philosophies have panned out for Tubby. If we are going to be run first, we have to have a solid defense that stops the majority of the plays and gets the ball back to the offense.
Like it was said above, I hate to see this many defenses in so many years, but I am glad to see that changes are being made at the top.

Switching Schemes
We didn’t run the 3-4 much in 2010 for various reasons, but took time to teach a new scheme. The 4-2-5 was a big change.
The 4-3 has been the standard since the late 60s and every player should be somewhat familiar with it, so shouldn’t be a problem switching to it. I just hope we don’t complicate it like Lyle did.
Problem is all of our 4-3 defensive players quit the team.
All we have left is DE. Great, another excuse for next year.

Hitting the panic button?
My two cents:
1. I sense some panic from TeleTubby in that if there is not some improvement (primarily defense) next year he’ll be packing his bags. Imagine the emails from the alum to the AD after the OSU, UT and Baylor games. He’s more comfortable with the 4-3.
2. Panic also seems the underlying reason for so many JUCOs. I’m not sure any Tech defensive scheme could stop the run without some better talent. They tried adjustments all year to no effect. Once again, if the only defensive stops are halftime and the end of the game (UT) then Tubby will go the way of Turner Gill.
I think unless it's 8 wins he'll be packing his bags anyway
I can’t emphasize enough how much leadership means to a team. Just look at SF. Name me one new player that the 49ers have on this year’s team (who is making a difference) that they didn’t have last year. It all starts at the top.

Agree except...
Rookie Aldon Smith has made a huge difference with the pass rush. But you are so right about leadership with the added plus of being able to work closely with the quarterback.
You have to believe there is panic. There should be panic when you are unsuccessful in your job.
Tubbs doesnt want to be known as the man to crash this progam and lose a job. He has always coached a 4-3 so the heat is setting in and he is ready to be more of a DC. I think the JUCO route sucks in many programs, it brings a couple good years and drops hard(f.e Leach did this on defense often), but following last years performance. We need experience and age. It was crystal clear that our players were asked to do more than what they were ready for.
Next year does not have to be a horrible year.
it doesn't have to be but I think it will be
not beating a dead horse just looking at the reality. I don’t see how our current lineup of defenders can switch to anything and be successful. We don’t have the personnel or the attacking style to get it done. Mackey not who we thought he was and doubtful the JUCOs could add enough punch to take us out of the bottom 10% of defenses in the nation.

Yep, Mackey never recovered from a collapsed lung

Conspiracy Theories...
Why are we so certain that anonymous enemies of the program are behind the publication of our coaching change? Don’t Feldman’s sources have to be inside our own
program? Even if A&M wants to steal our JUCO recruits, it’s not like they could get this story out there on their own.
Also… the conspiracy theory completely overlooks Tuberville’s ability to fuck things up with bad timing all by himself.
While I agree it your theory of complete and utter incompetence plays well here..
do you honestly think that this or any coach would fire his DC the night before he tries to sign two huge defensive recruits? You don’t find it the least bit strange who reported the information, and when?
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
I think a more likely scenarios are ...
1) a resignation that was supposed to be kept secret for a few days
2) a demotion to co-coordinator that was supposed to be kept secret for a few days
3) speculation around the two new hires and the switch to a 4-3
Regardless, our program has been clear that they intended to make no announcement on the matter yesterday, and some one outside of the program had a different idea.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
I think your analysis is probably right for the most part...
and I don’t think that Tuberville intended to put this info out there at such a bad time (probably, really I never know with that guy anymore).
SPECULATION ALERT: What I think probably happened is that some assistant that serves as Feldman’s source misunderstood the situation and thought Glasgow was being fired (or maybe firing Glasgow was really discussed) and took that info to Feldman. Feldman, trusting his source, put it into the public domain. You can’t deny that it’s newsworthy if it’s true.
What I don’t think happened is that someone at A&M or elsewhere heard about this and tried to use it to submarine Tech… and it’s hard for me to believe that someone like Feldman (who has been the victim of backroom politicking) would be deliberately malicious. Plus, his credibility is on the line… the last thing he wants is for people to start thinking of him the way they think of Sports by Brooks.
You are probably right
But changes to our position coaches, at this stage in our national relevance, are only important to a hand full of people……I would not consider that newsworthy.

A good reporter (and Feldman is a good reporter) knows all about agendas when he talks to sources

I have found Feldman to be rumor mongering on several occasions especially in Tech related issues
Even before the Leach fiasco, he wasn’t particularly fond of Tech and usually reported only the negative things, this was no exception.
Feldman, Sportsbybrooks and a few others have spent a lot of time in negatively reporting Tech based on unsubstantiated sources over the past decade or so. The Leach firing has only given them more ammunition to do so. I am not sure why they don’t like Tech or what they have against the school but if you look over the past ten years most of the Tech related information passed on by those two sources is mostly negative and often under-researched.

4-3 and 4-2-5
Are basically the same defense. Running the nickel package of the 4-3 is the 4-2-5. So I don’t see why you can’t keep Glasgow.
On one hand, I hate to see another DC change. This will mean that the life expectancy of a DC at Tech is 12 months. On the other hand, our D was so bad that there’s only one way to go. Yeah, I know we said the same thing last year, and look what happened.
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
I agree. I think dumping Glasgow after one season isn’t the answer. It sends a bad message to players and staff combined. I don’t know too much about Glasgow but I have to believe he can make this adjustment in the defensive scheme. These coaches are all wearing bulls eyes which is probably a good thing but lets make sure we send the problem packing and not just a fall guy.

Go Sonny Dykes!
Beat TCU tonight, then come to Tech and continue to do so! In all seriousness, Tubs sees the writing on the wall, and unless dramatic improvements are made next year, he is gone. Because of that, and because Sumlin went sheepy, I think Sonny will be on the short list for our next coach. I will sure be watching tonight!

Yep, this guy helped Aggies to 6-6 season;
and by the way, they could not block anybody in the second half.

The guys is widely considered one of the best...
at least Ohio State thinks so. I read enough here to know where your mind is at, but in case you want a an excuse for “optimism Wednesday”, there is a nugget. If this guy’s stats as an O-Line coach are up to snuff, I would be interested to know what O-Line hires you think are up to standards?

Good point...otherwise

"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
I think the 4-3 is a good idea but its not gonna solve the issues we have with the undersized DL and LB’s. But I am all for Tuberville doing what he knows best. I don’t think he was comfortable with Glasgows D and i think he now realizes he needs some experienced coaches to make this work. I am optimistic now seeing these changes being made that need to be made. As far as all these reports that of firings, i think there is some cover-up going on in an attempt to not look bad during this recruiting process.
Couldn't ask for a better pickup for OL Coach
My take on the Glasgow situation is that the medium is the message: he might not have been escorted out by security, but you don’t bring in a guy with Lovett’s experience and resume and then expect him to work underneath a 2nd year guy who just put a disaster out on the field in his debut season. As to alignment, we can run a 5-9 for all I care, just earn your paycheck every now and then, I beg you.
I agree...
I think this guy fits what Tuberville wants to do on offense… and I guess that’s all we can really ask anymore. He seems talented. His guys ran the hell over us anyway.
I am laughing my ass off this morning;
Tommy has to be the most unorganized and chaotic coach ever in the history of Division I Football, except for Mike Locksley of New Mexico. We are about to become the second worst football team in the country.
Tommy’s timing could not be any better. Criag James and Hance must be out to completely destroy our Football heritage.
I don’t know if these are good or bad football coaches, but at this point how can you even let a coach continue the way Tommy is gonig. We will be lucky to sign any recruits by signing day.
I reported after the Texas game that it was clear that both OC Brown and DC Glasgow would not even converse with Tommy on the sidelines, and I reported that this trend continued as the season played out. It is clear that neither Brown nor Glasgow respect Tommy.
Guys, we are in for one hell of a drought.

But I think Tommy will be in good company lately with Mack Brown, Stoops, and Sherman. Let’s face it, Big 12 football is a mess. We don’t have the only grossly underperforming coach in this state, and I’m not sure you would like the replacement that would fall down to us next year either.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
Speaking of Big 12 Football, that is a really good point.
This is a good re direct, which I am in need of this moring. But with all the chaos at Texas, TA&M, and Tech, how much will both TCU and Baylor benefit from all of this.
I was in College Station a couple of weeks ago, the same night Sherman was fired, and at dinner four gentlemen in their late 70’s early 80’s said they just came back from meeting and Sherman was fired. This was before the announcement.
They were very upset going to the SEC and leaving Big 12. They were not happy with their bow tie president.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
They will benefit greatly I fear...
UT, OU, and Tech are all down……O$U, Baylor, and TCU are on the rise. In the pecking order, this is why I can’t stomach a coaching change at this point. I fear UT and OU will be getting one soon as well. You consider that, and the wholesale changes this year in coaching, we will be getting scraps. Our choice will most likely be to keep our struggling veteran trying to find his mojo, or going back down the road of trying to guess which up and coming assistant is looking for a place to make a name for himself. Both are gambles, but one doesn’t involve ANOTHER coaching change at a critical time.

Money talks
The powers at Tech will have no choice if seats are empty and donations slide. No matter how much power you might think Hance has he won’t sacrifice the revenue stream by keeping Tuberville for a 4th season.
He’s gone if he doesn’t get 7 wins without a doubt.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
I think you are right, ultimately...
But if one losing season causes our stands to be empty, we have much bigger problems. Just take the coach our of it. If losing 7 games means no fans, no coach we would want will come here, neither will recruits. You may get exactly what you want, I just hope you are happy with what you get.
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
TTU has a very different situation. The fan base is very divided and Tuberville losing so many games isnt helping the cause. Many fans still feel cheated by the admin and sadly are looking for any excuse to pull donations.

Tech didn’t just get beaten…they got waxed!
Further 3 games were winnable with a serviceable defense (Kansas State, A&M, Missouri). But no one on the coaching staff had the ability to coach 11 young men, into a serviceable defense…not one coach to take charge and make a difference!

I’ll take a decent rushing offense and an average 4-3-4 defense. While it might not be 4000 yards passing a season, I can live with it.

It will come clear soon enough for me.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
While we are at it
If we are changing DC’s and Defense we mine as well change our OC.
He’s got one foot out the door anyway.
Understandable.
Firing Glasgow is disappointing for the mere fact that his system is solid if given enough time and are recruiting the right players. Time is what Tommy doesn’t have right now and this is why you see a mad scramble to change fast and bring in experienced coaches who know his 4-3 system. As I mentioned yesterday in the recruiting blog, I expected a 4-2/4-3 hybrid anyway next season with the addition of the Ole Miss coaches so I can’t say it’s suprising that the CG firing rumours have steam.
It makes perfect sense to stop the run first w/7-8 men in the box and let your DB’s handle the rest in man coverage. Isn’t the basic priniciple of any defense – stop the run first and disrupt the passer? Motivation by fear is a powerful thing and we now see Tommy reacting to that pressure. Here’s hoping we see results.

Are you familiar with the phrase “can’t win for trying”? I visit DTN in November and the mob wants heads to roll, then I visit in December and the mob says too many heads rolled. I liked what he was doing at UH and saw his potential as a great fit for Texas Tech. Not a coach who “won with defense” and had two of the best RB recruits in the history of college FB to hang his hat on. There are a lot of talented men who can motivate and do so in a way that doesn’t a) change the system and b) become more discombobulated as time goes on. Tubs said he would “keep things the same.” BS

But he gave you eight wins his first season, and the first bowl victory by a first year Tech coach, beat Colorado for the first time at Boulder, beat OU in Norman, got you your first top 15 recruiting class, probably another Top 25 class this year, huge donations etc.etc…….listen you want him gone, i get it, you may get your way. The reasons why you don’t fire a 2nd year head coach who did the above is obvious to me. It’s also obvious why you want a coached fired who you never liked in the first place after a losing season. "We have some injuries on our team, but that won't make a difference in this game." - Coach TT Nov. 19, 2002 going into the Iron Bowl
Every Day Is an Opportunity for a New Start
I haven’t been visiting as much lately because I get tired of people feeling sorry for themselves. The doom and gloom, just like excessive optimism is unwarranted.
Texas Tech has a track record. Coach Tuberville has a track record. Neither supports the conclusion that Tech will be down for long (or that Tech will compete for a national title). That having been said, every situation is what you make of it. Tuberville’s moves this offseason are justified based on what we’ve seen on the field the last two years. Injuries have been chronic and may be the negative joker; but, boring and crappy is still just that.
Getting A7M’s offensive line coach is amajor plus. A7M’s line has pushed Texas Tech all over the field the last three years. As concerns the defense, changing from what was one of the worst defenses in the country into anything different can only be good.
I think bringing in the JUCOs from winning programs for an immediate shoring up of the top forty players is also intelligent. The remainder of the recruiting class will evidence what this staff is made of with regard to recruiting.
This coaching staff is all on the hot seat going into next year, and they know it. It is put up or shut up time. They either get the team motivated and excited to play or hire realtors.
As a fan, I’m glad to see a sober assessment of what happened and what needs to happen. I don’t give a crap about style. Texas Tech needs to win now. Moreover, Texas Tech needs to play West Texas tough, the way they have traditionally played. I’m going to buy season tickets again next year and make the trek from El Paso to watch the Red Raiders play. I expect more for my hard earned money and will not continue to waste my time if there is not a dramatic attitude shift demonstrated on the field.

thats the sense i get from tubs and all the recent firings. Dont get how a successful coach SEC coach like Tubs goes into a major D-1 program like Tech and SEVERELY underestimates B12 competition. I know those SEC folks think their shit dont stink but this was a HUGE mistake on Tubs part. Wow. Now hes scrambling to get the (i hope at least) the right people to get this turned around but i think we are past the point of safe return. Our team is down-trodden and i see not a whole lot to get me excitied for next season. My tune might slighty change once NSD rolls around and we sign our kids, but IMO Tubs is coaching for his job this upcoming season. Kirby needs to take a hardline stance on this and make it clear to Tubs that if the ship isnt righted, then he will get someone that will.
P.S.
If tubs is gone after next season, i would like to see Sonny Dykes get a shot at the job.

Okay,
Something funny is going on. I haven’t had much time for football in the last week or two, but this doesn’t fit the trajectory of what I was told to expect. Something has changed recently.
I’ll stop by and talk to the grapevine later today and see what’s what.

Okay
My folks are being pretty tight-lipped because they have been looking for leakers for a while now.
With that said, they are speculating that some of this funny maneuvering we have been seeing might be coming from above Tubs, by people who don’t usually handle this stuff. If that’s the case, too many chiefs and not enough indians would explain the sloppy maneuvering in the last few weeks. This funny buisness lately is appreciably different and does not fit what we know about how Tubs fly’s the ship.
It was supposed to be a fairly quiet off-season with a few little changes- maybe a couple of guys come and go, not a major overhaul.
My feelings are simmilar- someone got serious when the horse already left the barn, OR someone else took control of it and is making changes.
If Blayne Beal is not on vacation, then he has lost control of his duties. Wonder about that, too.
Hocutt should force TT to be the DC...
he should just tell him that we aren’t hiring a third DC in three years and that Tuberville needs to start earning that $2mil contract… make him work for it instead of “coaching” ST and meddling with everyone else
We can use Glasgow's money for a Jumbotron!

or a stadium full of frankincense... we need to start hoarding that stuff before the coming shortage
What about that doomsday seed facility in Norway or somewhere
They have our back.

2012 is starting in 10 days
The world is coming to an end anyway. John Cusack foretold it all. Or more accurately, Woody Harellson foretold it to John Cusack who saved his family one step ahead of a collapsing North America at least 20 different times. That guy is the luckiest SOB who ever lived. And he did it all in a stretch limo! What are the odds?

Really. We install the HD widescreen in 2010 & we are still sending standard definition signals to it
If you’re too cheap to buy HD cameras, at least rent some on gamedays.
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
reminds me of the in-laws
they’ve had a 60" hi-def for years now and still haven’t bothered actually hooking an HD signal up to it. Nothing uglier than SD on an HD display

If I got some HD cameras and gave them to tech...
could I get my name on something cool?
