ODDS AND ENDS | I don't know if this is really a moment of zen, but these are some cool photos of volcanoes from 2011.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | I was so close to leading off with the football team, but the Lady Raiders deserve top-billing as last night, the Lady Raiders beat Western Kentucky, 75-38 (boxscore, quotes and video) to move to 10-0 for the year. Per LAJ's David Just, head coach Kristy Curry talked about wanting to get her team off to a hot start, something that hurt Texas Tech against Illinois last week:
The Lady Raiders shook off Saturday’s sluggish performance in Chicago, where they held on for a 70-64 victory against Illinois.
Curry saw to that by jumpstarting Tech with an aggressive man-to-man defense and full-court pressure that led to an 11-0 run.
"I thought I needed to do a better job in this game of getting us going early," Curry said. "I thought we made them rush some quick shots and some misses gave us a chance to run out of it. We want to make sure our defense gives us a chance to run and be effective."
The Lady Raiders are off for a good part of the Christmas break, and will play in the Surf and Slam basketball tournament starting December 29, 2011 against Cal-State Bakersfield.
I missed this article yesterday, but the men's team isn't the only team helping in the community, per LAJ's Tommy Magelssen, the Lady Raiders are out and about as well.
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | The Red Raiders play tonight, in Tulsa, against Oral Roberts. Tip-off is at 7:05 and the game will be televised on Fox College Sports. I've done a Q&A with Summit Madness to preview the game and that preview will be up later this morning. I wanted to note this article from LAJ's Nick Kosmider, again, from the other day, about how head coach Billy Gillispie is seemingly doing a bit more than just handing out presents to kids:
He (Gillispie) contacted the Boys and Girls Club with the aim of creating a special day for children in the organization. Tuesday’s trip with children from the Optimist branch of the organization, was the fourth such event Gillispie personally funded, which included a ride in the limo, the selection of a handful of toys — the children chose everything from iPods to dollhouses — and a trip to McDonald’s. All three branches of the Lubbock Boys and Girls Club and the one located in Shallowater participated over the last week.
Well, that's pretty awesome.
In today's paper, LAJ's Kosmider writes that the Red Raiders are looking for a quality road win and Gillispie says that rebounding will be the key:
"We’ve got to rebound better, honestly," he said. "We got out-rebounded (42-40 against Grambling State), which is, for lack of a better word, pitiful on my part and the other big guys’ parts, so we’re going to have to work on that. Oral Roberts is a physical team that really gets after the boards."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | I don't know where to start with this. It is not normal for me to take comments made in posts and then turn around and post them as a story, but this is an exception. If you want the long version, read this FanPost from yesterday. The short version is this, and keep in mind that this is all based on anonymous internets, so take it with a grain of salt, but I do know that something isn't right. I'll start with the word allegedly and applies to everything. Allegedly, defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow packed up his stuff on Monday, said that he knew that the writing was on the wall and left. Allegedly, head coach Tommy Tuberville has been unable to reach Glasgow and that allegedly, Glasgow is recruiting against Texas Tech and may have contacted OU commit CB Kass Everett's father to recruit against Texas Tech despite still being employed by Texas Tech. Allegedly, the reason why Texas Tech still hasn't fired Glasgow is a clause in his contract. I don't get the last bit, about the contract being a hindrance as to firing Glasgow as the natural course would be to fire Glasgow, claim a sovereign immunity defense and move on to John Lovett being your defensive coordinator.
I cannot make this stuff up and this story may rival the best story ever told. Anyway, anyone was to put the over-under on when Glasgow is terminated at today by 5:00 pm?
So here we are, and the officiate site has released a press release about the nine players that signed yesterday, which included the seven JUCO recruits (DE Lee Adams, LB Will Smith, WR Sadale Foster, WR Javon Bell, OL Rashad Fortenberry, LB Chris Payne and FS Austin Stewart). There were also two high school players that signed, OL Jared Kaster and CB Theirry Nguema. Also, per the official site, former Texas A&M offensive line coach Jim Turner, was officially hired. You can read the LAJ articles on the nine players that signed and the hiring of Turner.

I think tech football is more exciting off the field than on. Way to go Tubby.

Going
Into year 3 of Jim Sowell’s great plan, and I’m still numb. It’s bad enough to be a laughing stock on the field, but it now spills over into everything the program does. Baghdad Bob is alive and well, as we are told one thing as we watch the real story unfold in front of our eyes. It will take someone special to rebuild this program.

waited till his son graduated
whatever – did he even graduate? Wasn’t he at Tech for like 6 years with greyshirt and redshirt? I’d love to see CJ on a debate. “Is it true, Mister James, that you killed 5 hookers while at SMU?”

Did his son actually graduate?
I wasn’t going to bring this up until I had proof, but AJ wasn’t on the Athletic Department’s list of graduates nor was he in the commencement program.
All I was working off was the AD's list of graduates, but I have nothing definitive - why I asked the question.
Given his history of work ethic and entitlement, i’m going to go out on a limb and say no. His Daddy don’t need evidence; neither do I.

Kirby Hocutt
I wonder where our AD is in all of this? I think he’s in it up to his eyeballs. If he’s not, he should be. And if he’s being kept out of it, he might as well pack up his office and get out of Dodge as well. Assuming that he is heavily involved, he and Tubs need to come clean tell people what’s really going on.
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
I’m not giving Hocutt a pass, but this is an awful situation (if it’s true) and I think that he’s doing his best to resolve it as he know how. I can appreciate that this is a very delicate situation, one that I would imagine he’s having to get advice from attorneys as to how to handle appropriately.

The same attorneys that did

If so, we’re so screwed.
Glascow’s new book title: Swing Your Lawsuit.
What a mess
I’m actually more disappointed about losing Everett than Glasgow. We had that kid locked in. The hat was fitiing so well. He would have been a great help to us. If Glasgow did in fact contact this kid and spread a bunch of dirt about the program he should consider another career path. Coaches should be more adult like and take the high road versus lowering themselves to childish tactics.
There are loads of problems with Tuberville’s methods and I think it’s pretty clear that he’s not going to make here. We would have to have a miracle season in 2012 IMO for this guy to gain any respect at this point. This much turnover isn’t good for this program and leadership is obviously lacking.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Just a thought..........
Glascow could have just been telling the kid that he had been fed a sled load of shit by an old geezer past his prime.

It could be that. I’ve worked for some real shady assholes in the construction business throughout my career and I learned that it’s just best to walk away from a bad working situation versus drawing attention to it. I would respect Glasgow more if he would have just left. I think we all know now that Tuberville is the greater problem among the staff.
On a positive note we are getting the offseason Tech football drama we are all so fond of.

Maybe he can pull this one back into the fold.
And yes, if this is an example of the character of Glasgow, it tells me two things. First, Tubby is horrible at interviewing and screening his hires. And secondly, it is good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you in the backside Glasgow. And I hope this character issue follows you for a while.

Football …. this is just crazy and another embarrassment for the University. I mean this looks so stupid and reflects weakness.
On the Lady Red Raiders: I love this response from Coach Kristy Curry on the 10-0 start. Maybe the football team can take a few lessons from the WBB.
On the 10-0 start
I’m just happy for the kids and their commitment. This team has their heart in the right place, I don’t know what is going to happen but I do know that everyday they are going to lay it on the line and try to do all that they can to be successful. Any mistakes they make it’s not because their heart isn’t in the right place and that’s a fun group to coach and I’m happy for them but at the same time I don’t think there is anybody that doesn’t realize that today is a new day and what we’ve done in the past is the past. We’ve got to continue to move forward and not dwell in the past whether it’s good or bad, or happy or sad, it’s good right now and things are great and I’m happy for them but we’ve got to move on and continue to improve and get better and get ready for January.
.

Kristy Curry and BCG are really positive things happening within the Tech athletic family of coaches. Those two should do clinics on how to manage your team/staff for the football program.

How magical and convienient!
That we get cute innuendo about Glasgow surfacing right about the time he is supposed to have been fired.
Meh. Gotta give the story a change to build first before you fire him, right?
Yeah, that’s how Tech fires people, want another example?
I would rather see him around through 2012 to see what he is capable of, but once Texas Tech University decides to fire someone and the train leaves the station, there is no calling it back.
If I am Ted Ligget, I see dollar signs all over this. What a damn shame.
It also explains the bizarre manuvering of the football program lately.
We know that it looks like when the athletic department is doing it’s job routinely.
I know I have been hammering this point lately, but-
It’s recent maneuvers are so different from the norm that someone else has to be in control of this.
It doesn’t look like Tech football of the last 2 years, but now that I think about it- it DOES look like the lurching, mysterious, and sinister control from December a few years ago.
I hope I am wrong. I hope Glasgow isn’t toast, but these dots are pretty easy to connect.
O Boy
Tech Football thanks to Jerry Kent Hance Jones has turned into one of those large turds that refuses to be flushed. It just keeps swirling around the toilet but will not go down. After reading swing your sword, I was sick at my stomach reading the bs going on in our administration, Craig James etc. I hat this crap for the fans and alums.
I won't be surprised if Glasgow actually did this
I had heard rumors a couple of months back, when midway through the season I had rumors (and had posted here then but wasn’t sure that if this was true) that Glasgow had a personality issues, where he did not get well with some of the players and coaches. The rumors were that he was blaming everyone from the players to the fans to the way in which the offense was run for his debacles on defense (blaming everyone but himself that is). I just thought these were baseless rumors and did not here confirmation from anybody else that this was infact true. Now this news comes out, which is sort of similar to what I had heard about Glasgow. If the story of his leaving the program is true, then let’s just say that we will be able to retain Neal Brown for a while more and we will actually have a defense next year because there will be a more experienced coach and the 4-3 is easy to implement.
I've been thinking a lot about Tubs and the 4-3...
This is the defense he has the most experience with… it’s also the defense that we ran under Leach.
It’s funny to me that Tubs tried out two different defensive schemes before going back to what Leach was doing.
Anything but admit that Leach had been doing something right, no?
Who is this Leach you speak of?
It is a well known fact that the ten years prior to Tuberville blessing us with his presence, Texas Tech did not play football. I know not of what you speak.
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
Lets hope he does the same thing on offense, and quit running the junk he has last two years. I have a bad feeling the offense will be about 80% run, 20% pass next year. The riverboat gambler joke is going to try and save his job with going back to what he knows best.
It it wins...
that is much better than what happened this year. We need the defense to be better. Nothing new there for Tech. However last year was the worst.
Guns Up!

Me likey. Let’s make the best use of the new TV money & buy out Tuberville & offer Dykes & his staff the moon to decamp for Lubbock. And if there’s any money left over, give it as a bribe to Hance to get him to resign. I’ve had enough of this soap opera. I want Texas Tech to start playing football again.

Ultrasensative maybe?
CG does come from the Coach Patterson ilk, so if my memory serves me right, wasn’t it Coach P whining about how June Jones wasn’t giving TCU any respect by SMU, and that Coach P would never help them again and good luck finding another conference, blah, blah, blah….My 2 yr. old daughter doesn’t whine this much.
To my point though – it just seems that Coach P’s inferiority complex rubbed off extensively on Glasgow. He was brought in to install a better defense, and because of various issues (lack of talent, knowledge, injuries, etc.) it didn’t work out. Then you throw in the personality issues with Tommy and it was a receipe for disaster, which we all unfortuantely witnessed this season. Regardless, Tommy had to do something and after 2 failed experiements he decided it was time to get back to his roots and install the 4-3 and bring in experienced coaches. CG was hurt, realized the trust and respect was gone and did what he had to do, pack his sh*t and leave, and in the meantime try to sabotage the recruiting front.

P.S. kudos to Sonny Dykes...
Although LaTech didn’t win last night it was a hell of a game and they almost pulled off the upset against TCU. I think we are seeing the chinks in Coach P’s defensive armor and don’t think for a minute Big 12 coaches weren’t watching that game last night.

TCU had a down year...
They still made it to a bowl game and won, finishing in the Top 25.
I remember when our down years were like that.
True.
It was a supposed “rebuilding” year for the Frogs, however Coach P would never have you believe that. Freshman and sophmores in the backfield. I know they’ll be better next year. Should be a fun Big 12 season next year.
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
Down years?
You mean winning a bowl game and being ranked in the top 25 was a down year for Tech? Can you read my mind? =)
"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
let's forget Leach's first two years (after all, we give Tuberville two years to get his shit together, right?)
The other 8 years Leach was at Tech, he went:
9-5
8-5
8-4
9-3
8-5
9-4
11-2
8-4
That’s an average of 8.75 wins per season. Therefore, the 8 win seasons are the “down years”, 9 win seasons were just above average, and the 11 win season with the big year… yeah… 8 wins was a “down year”.
Agreed 8 wins are down years...
Top 25 rankings..not so much.

"We have some injuries on our team, but that won't make a difference in this game." - Coach TT Nov. 19, 2002 going into the Iron Bowl
Quote from Everett:
“It was that last minute deal with the Tech defensive coordinator, I couldn’t get a hold of him and his phone was, I guess, disconnected. That was the guy that my dad was introduced to two different times and he made two visits to see my dad and it – a guy that he formed a relationship with.”

"Dress good, yu'll play good. Play good, yu'll get paid good." -Deion Sanders
so maybe it’s not true that he was out and out “dissing Tech,” but that he just didn’t make himself available at the 11th hour.
I mean with our athletic role models today you can’t really blame a kid for jumping ship. Loyalty certainly doesn’t mean what it used to, the game is rigged, and we don’t have our house in order.
"We have some injuries on our team, but that won't make a difference in this game." - Coach TT Nov. 19, 2002 going into the Iron Bowl
What is weird is he was never recruited by Glasgow...
Glagow met with his father. The kid was in love with Prunty, he only knew Prunty. His first call would not have been to Glasgow, and if know one had “gotten to him”, the fact that he could not reach Glasgow right away would not have been enough to change his commitment. The rumor remains that Glasgow called the kids father, whom he had a relationship with. The kid admitted that Stoops called him right away. Between Big Game Bob, Glasgow, and his dad…..something besides a disconnected phone made the kid change his commitment in a matter of minutes. But who knows, there is tons of smoke around the dirty recruiting bit from people who should know. This will all play out at some point.

Tech football could be a reality show right now
It would probably compete with the jersey shore for the most “wtf” moments. I miss the days when all we had to worry about was which senior was going to break a new record as QB.

Good idea
Couldn’t be worse having a drunken Snooki as Tech’s HC on a gameday sideline! Or her as a co-HC, whing to Tubs during the game? Man, I too miss the “who’s the next senior to break a QB record” days!
can someone dump on this mess!?!? PLEASE!
wow…..this is just beyond me. chad resigns, bad mouths the program, and costs us a recruit in the processs. Tubs helped create the situation by not believing in his hire. I bet Sowell, the admin, etc., didnt think this would happen since we got rid of that mean old mike leach. be careful what you wish for because you just might get it, and hindsight is always 20-20. Thinking letting go of the captain such a good decision now?
P.S. For a lack of a better word, Tech couldnt “Leach” glasgow? Dont remember a contract being a sticking point at that point in time.
sad tech fan is sad :(
what is the big deal with the contract?
contracts never mattered before?
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
not at tech at least

Turn out the lights, the partys over!
When does this story get out to the TV and print media? Or is it only a local story?
I knew something must have happened after the OU game; what else could explain the total collapse of the team after that signature win? Tech football is definitely a soap opera…..please someone wake us up at DTN and say that the last two years has been just a bad dream.
Before we all go throwing Glasgow under the bus
I have also heard from a “credible source,” that Tuberville hired the new defensive coaches without consulting Glasgow ( the new coaches are all Tubs’ guys) , and that the first time Glasgow heard that there would be a switch to the 4-3 defense was directly from one of the defensive recruits over the last few days.
According to this source, Tuberville and Lovett, who Tuberville had been hired just 10 days ago, were on an all out campaign to secure the JUCO commitments and the discussion about converting to a 4-3, Lovett’s speciality, was a key part of the sales pitch.
Glasgow confronted Tuberville when he learned of the switch to a 4-3 defense, and heated words were exchanged. The source described Tuberville as a “scumbag” with no regard for ethics, who is quick to assign blame, and as some one who refuses to accept responsibility.
The source also said that Glasgow has done zero negative recruiting as had been claimed, but when word of Glasgow’s possible departure broke, one of the player’s father contacted Glasgow to find out what was happening.
If my kid was going into that kind of shit storm, I sure as hell would want him to be able to make my decision based on all available facts.
I am not a rumor monger, and I have an idea why this source has reached out to me in particular. I don’t pretend to know whether this information is true or is grist for the rumor mill.
Nevertheless it is another side of the story .
Let’s hold off on demonizing Glasgow before the facts come out.
We’ve all been here before.

At every company I ever worked for all problems were the fault of the guy who just quit
As long as you keep the pool of ex-employees fresh nobody still employed will ever have to take responsibility for anything negative.

yes...
This is S.O.P with many organizations. Chad is a coach I didn’t meet, but he seemed very genuine (although not a great public speaker) at the signing day banquet in Dallas. He appeared to be the most demonstratively emotional coach.
This just feels like a kent hance joint.

None of this would surprise any of us
I think it’s pretty evident that Tuberville is scambling and now the heat is up so high he’s showing signs of a desperate man. I do hope your source is correct about Glasgow and if so I sincerely hope he lands on his feet.

This is what I don't get.
If the head coach is the “head” coach why is a coordinator pissed about what defense is ran? I get that CG would be mad if he heard it from a recruit, but that would be like a RB coach getting mad at a Spread HC for not running the ball enough. Right?
Another way I look at is I am a salesman for a company and have been selling product X for years my boss brings in product Y and we start selling it or we sell X&Y.

I tend to speculate this has more to do with the hiring process of the two most recent coaches. Glasgow probably wasn’t in the know or much less consulted. The scheme change also probably plays a part in this as well.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Im not for the Glasgow bus event either.
This just smells way too much like what happened a few years ago for me.
My people had ZERO about this Glasgow static yesterday when I talked to them, but we are suddenly floating fairy tales on the internet? So a decent coach just suddenly gets a case of the astronomical fuckups all on his own and it happens like this? Something is not right here with what we “know” so far.
I am gonna go for while and work a few more people on this to get some info by this evening. Actually, I think I have a good chance of getting some interesting info. I am going to be a little bolder than usual, and see some different people- so we’ll see.
I did get a phone call from a fun place with fun people the other day. That’s all I’m sayin. Maybe it was the north pole?
You had a phone call from a B-52's concert?
Always a fun place with fun people at a B-52’s show. Or was it a Go-Go’s concert?
"...Fight for the school we love so dearly"
Nothing to report
Matter of fact I am going to have a nap. The people I talked to were very difficult and wore me out.
Learned some things, but not going to go there yet. Way too much chaos in the air to make sense of anything I learned. Pfft!
This is a new group of folks.
Having slept on it, I have a question. Are we sure all of our returning players are indeed returning?
Don't feel sorry for Tubs
He made his bed—let him lie on it.
Hance made a deal with the devil
And now all of TTU football is suffering. Of course that devil would wear a suit, used to work for ESPN and is now seeking employement with the State of Texas.
Did any of you read the stuff on Scout about the other coaches who were just let go.
The allegations against them are telling and cumulative to the story about Glasgow….
I hate reading this kind of stuff, somehow it seems to fit….yukko !!
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
It speaks to the locker room after the OU game.
Allegedly the DC, the OL coach, and Mounds were talking about how our team was not good enough to have gotten the win. Things like if it hadn’t rained we would not have won, things like it was a fluke, generally that we were not that good.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Oh, to read their threads, one does not need an account with Scout.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
It's 4PM and still NO NEWS
One hour left before 5pm and we still don’t know what the hell has happened. Surely someone inside besides Feldman can leak some more info on CG. If he was fired fine, if he resigned, that’s fine also, just put the damn truth out there and let’s get our focus on the new DC (which will probably be Lovett anyway).
"They name hurricanes after winds like we have in Lubbock." Coach Tommy Tuberville
Remember when we first hired CG?
There was all this confusion in the media about whether we were running the 4-2-5 or the 4-3? Tubs would say the 4-3 and CG would say the 4-2-5. This was a doomed relationship from the beginning; they just took a year to figure it out.
by TexasTechForever on Dec 22, 2011 4:08 PM CST reply actions
Exactly.
If Tommy knew he wanted a 4-3 all along, why bring in a 4-2-5 guy in the first place? And why waste your time on a 3-4 the first year? It’s so asinine the way this whole thing has played out. I feel like we’ve completely wasted 2 seasons. And all of this coming off the Leach firing. I don’t blame any of you for not attending games @ the Jones or buying Tech gear or sending in money. I’m so GD pissed right now! I f**king LOVE Tech! I bleed red & black and all this BS is driving me insane! And then I have to see teams like, Iowa St, KSU and Baylor of all places doing well, with a coach who should have been here! Jesus. What have we become? And to top it off, I live in FW, have a Horned Frog wife and many TCU friends and clients and it’s just so sad that my/our team is in such turmoil. The Frogs won the Rose Bowl! Seriously?! I can’t even imagine Tech ever being in that bowl and that’s what hurts the most.

It is 9:14pm on 12/22
And Chad Glasgow is still, probably the Tech DC.
It looks bad, It smells bad, and I am pretty sure something is afoot.
There is a reason this surfaced in the way they did and at the time it did.
I really wonder about the people who want to see him run off -floating these ideas and seeing how they play. Looks like dirty politics to me.
What bothers me most is it fits a pattern we have seen before.
I do know of some monkey buisness going on unrelated to Glasgow directly, but it’s more something to wait and see what happens next year.
I am actually drawing a map of things known and unknown so I can find the epicenter of the chaos. Should be informative.
the not knowing is killing me...
I’ve been compulsively checking DTN all day… I really need to give Tech football a break for a day or two… this is just too much
I have a little time for football
for now, but I would rather be focused on the other things going on like the new staff and the new recruits and getting a handle on all that. This really is getting gruesome and I would rather not have things this way. I wish my football time could be spent in other ways.
Lets put it this way, Friday afternoon is tomorrow. Traditional time for a staff change, and press releases that you want to keep quiet because most media abandons ship around 3:00pm on a Friday, and most of them are on vacation now anyhow.
I really want to see how silly my map looks by about 5pm tomorrow, because even I didn’t like the conclusions I found, and I would rather be wrong quietly.
Allright, Enough of this for tonight.
