Recruiting on the South Plains | LB Chris Payne
Chris Payne is commit #3 from Gulf Coast C.C. (MS), the others being WR Javon Bell and OL Rashad Fortenberry. Originally a South Carolina commit out of high school and at that time, he was a very highly rated player, a top 150 player in the country. Also, everything I've read says that he's a linebacker, but I think was originally a safety coming out of high school, which is why his Rivals profile says that he plays safety. From the film, he plays linebacker at Gulf Coast C.C., but I could be wrong about that and any help in the comments would be greatly appreciated.
Let's get to it.

Ht: 5'11" | Wt: 215 lbs | Forty: N/A
JUCO: Gulf Coast C.C. (Perkinston, MS)
The Player Speaks: LAJ's Don Williams spoke with Payne, who very much enjoyed his visit, to Lubbock, however by the time I've written this profile, Payne has already signed his letter of intent and will be on campus in January and will have three years to play three years of football:
“The whole time I was there, I had a great time, talking to the academic lady, even talking to the trainers,” said Payne, who visited Tech on Thursday and Friday. “It’s like a big family. I never felt like I was away from home. I just loved the whole vibe and the whole city.”
Payne's JUCO coach talked about Payne as a player and his coach describes the type of player that Texas Tech needs:
“Chris is an outstanding linebacker -- can really run, very physical, very active,” Mississippi Gulf Coast coach Steve Campbell said. “He’s real good at tackling in space, and I think he’s very effective against a spread offense that can throw the football around, because he’s got real good coverage skills and he’s physical enough to play in box, but he runs well enough to be very effective in coverage.”
Offers and Rankings: Payne apparently had offers from Michigan St., Kentucky, and S. Florida. That's not a bad offer list as far as I'm concerned. No real rankings that I could find.
The Video:
2011_PAYNE.wmv (via mgcccfootball)
Scouting Report: This is where things get interesting. You can see Payne's height and weight, and in fact on Rivals, they still have him weighing only 190 pounds, but I think he's heavier than that and 24/7 has him at 215. So Payne is fairly slight and he's not the biggest player on the field, but he does make plays. The video above was tough to watch, only because I had to watch it four times to get an idea as to who Payne was. The thing that stood out to me was that Payne is very quick and he does get around the football quite a bit, but it is his highlight film.
What really stood out to me was that Payne recorded 78 tackles. That in itself isn't all that impressive, however, he amassed those 78 tackles in just 7 games, which is about 11 tackles a game. He had 8.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks, which means that he had a TFL for each game he played.
The other encouraging thing is that at the end of the year at his teams football awards ceremony, Payne was given the 2011 Harold "War Daddy" White Trophy. From what I can gather, what this means is that he was the teams player with the biggest heart or plays with the most passion or something like that. Players that are recognized for the way that they play the game is usually a good sign. I'm excited.
Chris, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

Wow!
Great to have him on our team. I am very impressed by the recruiting being done by this staff. Let’s take all of these positvies onto the field now.
Guns Up!
Double WOW
I too am very impressed with the recruting done by this staff. I am also impressed with the game management and play calling, I can’t think of a time when the future of Tech football looked so bright. I would imagine that during the next recruitng cycle we will have to shoo candidates away.
ps. I like the taste of grape.
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
It’s really sucks to have a comment be sarcastic to something I write or another person’s comment.

Exactly
But that is how we roll on DTN.

I have people email me and complain that I don’t focus enough on the on-the-field stuff, but if you look at what I write, it’s almost entirely about what happens on the field. I’m trying damned hard to focus on what’s happening on the athletic playing field and perhaps it’s foolish of me to do this, but I keep thinking that it’s fun to talk about sports, as frustrating as they can be. I guess I’m not trying hard enough.

its always fun to talk about sports, but a little bsing never hurt anyone as long as they follow the DTN rules.
As someone that goes through a lot comments it gets tiring and there no reason to mock someone that seemed legitimately excited about a player.

It's so much easier
to make a sarcastic sneer than it is to make an insightful thought. I appreciate the hard work you put into reporting on recruiting, personnel, etc., because without it, I wouldn’t have an ongoing source on my alma mater. There’s always going to be people that will have something negative to say about something, no matter what it is… Don’t let it get to you. “Haters gonna hate.”

I think you have a perfect balance of "off-field" vs the "on-field" stuff.
It’s always very informative and helpful for those of us who don’t have anywhere else to go for our TTU athletics fix. You’re always going to have a select few bitch and moan about what they don’t like regardless of what you do or what kind of content you produce. That’s the nature of people today. Everyone thinks they can do everyone else’s job better than anyone else because we as a society give everyone blue ribbons for getting last place in t-ball as kids. Let them bitch and let them leave. You’ve got a great site with good material. If they don’t like it they can either provide constructive feedback or f*** off in my opinion. The banter definitely gets sarcastic and I’m as guilty as anyone but it’s all in good fun for the most part. It becomes a bigger problem when the PC police come out in force looking for a reason to stir the pot. Keep up the good work.
And I am pumped up about this commit.
After reading the post I’m convinced Payne could be/will be a starter next year.
relax because...........
you’re doing a good job. none of us would be here if

I'm not usually sarcastic just to be sarcastic...especially over someone else's
excitement over something that is actually positive the staff has done. Sure, I can be sarcastic in the context of an argument or established debate. But I don’t usually belittle someone’s comment just because I can. I see a difference there.

I’m on hiatus, I can’t believe you made me come back here & post.
On behalf of bb, and I guarantee you he will kick my backside over this, he did not mean to offend. Those of us who are smart alecks can’t help ourselves sometimes – it’s a curse (and a blessing when we’re funny :-) .
He thinks the world of you Seth and is grateful for what you do and how you do it. I have emails to back this up if need be. (Don’t worry bb, I wouldn never post them…!)
Why bb won’t show his nice side here I don’t understand because he really is a good guy (another thing he’s going to kick my butt for revealing but I’m feeling reckless today).
Okay, back to my hiatus…

Hi, Austin, welcome back, even if it is just a cameo
I think bb started out excited with his reply, but his alter ego got the best of him and he just had to throw in a sarcastic note. Not usually his style, but I don’t think it is any dig at Seth or BradR. I usually just overlook these types of things and try to focus on the most relevant things. I, too, sometimes get a bit carried away. Seth has, it seems, been a bit more critical lately, but two seasons like Tech has had can bring that out, no matter how good aperson actually is most of the time. Now, my head hurts from trying to be wise…..probably coming across as a wise a## instead.
My take on the player presented here is that he seems to be a quicker version of Fehoko, or what we though Fehoko was. He should be a nice addition to Tech for the next three years.

good pick up for Tech
I also like that he can play for 3 years instead of the usual 2.

I like this kid
Looks like he has good measurables for a LB. I really like the fact he’s excited about Tech and has 3 years of eligibility. Welcome Chris!
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
a hybrid type player?
like the kind you’d need to run the 4-2-5? I worry that he’s too small for the 4-3
I don’t know. My thought, or at least my hope, is that no staff, no matter who it is, doesn’t give out a scholarship if they don’t think that they can eventually be a starter. Otherwise, I’d rather that they just save that scholarship. I think that Payne has the potential to start, and yes he’s small, but damn, he was productive and in a meaningful way. This is one of those discussions where someone will say that Zach Thomas was small and look how good he was. I think the argument should be, Zach Thomas was small, therefore it’s not impossible for Payne to be successful. Either way, I think that Payne could be an ideal starter when the defense does need to go to a nickel or dime package defensively or he could be a good WLB. If you were to just have told me his height and weight, I would agree with you, but there’s something about a guy that leads a defense in tackles per game and is so stinking productive when he’s on the field.

I agree. LB’s don’t have to be really big guys for success. Plenty of examples exist that have proven that stature isn’t a certain build at that position. If the guy can tackle and have an eye for the ball he can succeed.

+1 I hope he can tackle for real and perhaps show the rest of our defense how to do it.
I wonder why Tubs never bought into Jimmy Johnson’s thinking of full pads and full contact practices?

I've looked at the available clips for our defensive recruits
Yeah, trying to find hope….
I was impressed with Payne and Micah Awe.
Both appear to take very instinctive paths to the ball carrier….and arrive with bad intentions.
We need help on defense and
if this kid was on South Carolina’s radar coming out of high school and Mich State wanted him out of JUCO, then he must have something. We need playmakers on defense who can actually tackle in space. Hopefully young Mr. Payne will help us in that regard.

Sorry, about the above
Who is the Tech assistant working the Juco’s? It would be interesting to know, for accountability than for anything else.

The rivals page has a second link with additional info for the coach responsible for recruiting. I would get it but I am on my phone.

All about speed
Like I said earlier I really like the 4-3. Key for LB’s especially in that D is speed. Not talking about 40yd speed – talking football speed. I will take a 4.7 in the 40 vs a 4.5 with a LB that can read the O effectively. It appears this kid may have that kind of ability. Looks very promising!
Also, thanks for all you do and I really appreciate you trying to keep the conversation about football. Hang in there!
Jucos
Does he look great on film?
Of course. Every recruit does. Is it strange tubby is picking up all of these jucos?
Yes.
Can our defense get any worse ?
Not really. Lets bring these guys in and see what happens. It’s tubby on the line not us. I hope these guys help the team and I say welcome to Lubbock.
By the way, any word on Glasgow?

I listened to Hyatt and Williams today. They said it was very odd that no one will return their calls anymore. They stated that usually this staff is very good about returning calls.

just an opinion but...............
I’d like to see a 4-3. But that is going to mean that we’ll need inside tackles
in the 330 lbs range. We’ll need DEs’ in the 260-275 lbs range with extreme
quickness. That brings us to the real heart and soul of the D. I’d like to EXPERIMENT
with Kerry Hyder at middle lb. Run situations with between the tackles responsibiliities.
At 260lbs he’s a mean sob that likes to hit. It would force teams like ut to beat us at what they’re not good at. Throwing.
"All I wanted was my icream cone and my little cream soda, oh well, oh well, oh well" White Stripes
I was impressed with baylors ol
they seemed to be very well coached. Blocking angles give the ol guys
the advantage and it really makes it hard for dl guys weighing 30-40lbs
less. Escpecially later in the game. Big heavy ass DTs that don’t get pushed
around and a kick ass middle lb. Brandon Williams type guys for outside linebackers.
I’m sick and tired of us getting beat the same ol way week end week out. We need
to secure the middle. This defensive configuration would make it a lot harder and
force these teams to beat us some other way than what they’re good at.
"All I wanted was my icream cone and my little cream soda, oh well, oh well, oh well" White Stripes
I like what I see and read on this guy
Seems to be smart player who studies game film.
always around the ball and KNOWS how to tackle.
At 215, I don’t think LB. Probsly a safety. Wonder
if we could hire him as tackling coach as well.
"All I wanted was my icream cone and my little cream soda, oh well, oh well, oh well" White Stripes
one other note on this guy
seems to have great confidence, which makes for a good leader.
Since we don’t have a leader, coaches included, I’m glad he’s
here.
