DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-12-09

ODDS AND ENDS | This is neat. For every person that watches A Game of Honor - Army vs. Navy, CBS Sports will make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. It's Friday, so you know you're not working.
LADY RAIDER BASKETBALL | Good stuff from LAJ's David Just, who profiles Texas Tech signee, Bullard G Minta Spears, who is the #3 leading scorer in the nation. Here is Minta:
"Well, it feels pretty sweet to sit back and think about it now," Spears said of her national presence, "but I’m not one of those people sitting on MaxPreps or looking at what people say about me. That just messes with your head. I don’t care how many points I score, I just do it because that’s what I have to do for us to win."
And I also noticed that Spears has a ESPN profile that describes her game (and she has an awesome YouTube video):
Seeing Spears back-to-back weekends allowed us to observe all the little things she does. She stays within herself and makes plays. She makes her teammates better, showed some handle, shooting range and toughness. She's not the most imposing player physically but her height allows her to play both guard posts. She's note a 20 and 10 player but coaches love her because she can do a little bit of everything and does so full throttle. She'll need to get stronger to help neutralize the quicker guards defending her at times. She rarely gets into trouble though because she doesn't try to do too much. Spears is the glue player that every coach wishes they had.
RED RAIDER BASKETBALL | This is kinda neat, F Jordan Tolbert is mentioned as one of the players considered for freshman of the year for CBS. Tolbert didn't make the top 10, but he's at least getting some national attention.
In other good news, per the official site, head coach Billy Gillispie says that he and his team of merry players will visit hospitals and help with charities for the next 12 straight days. The schedule of where BCG and the team are going to be is at the link. Here's BCG:
"The holiday season is a season of giving," said Gillispie. "Our team and our coaching staff definitely have the holiday spirit. We look forward to doing our part to making the season as joyous as possible for others. We are very excited about these 12 special days and hope to make this an exciting yearly tradition. We want to be known as a program that excels on the court, in the classroom and in the community."
Per LAJ's Nick Kosmider, he talked with G Luke Adams' father, Mark Adams, and Luke can actually hear the Justin Bieber taunts (I am expecting huge traffic from typing the words, Justin Bieber). Here's Mr. Adams, who says that the Bieber taunts also happened at TAMU-CC:
"In a crowded environment, he's going to hear about 98 percent of what's said," said Mark Adams, the basketball coach at Howard College in Big Spring.
Mark Adams said his son has been a deft lip reader since he was very young, and with the addition of the cochlear implants and a hearing aid -- which he keeps in place with a headband during games -- "he's just as normal as you and I."
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL | Per our good friends at Rock Chalk Talk, Kansas has hired Charlie Weis to be their head coach. Hmmm, I'm not sure that I'm that impressed by the hire and all I know is that EDSBS is dancing that he's no longer at Florida.
If you're in the Bryan-College Station area, you can to check out Texas Tech commit Tenaha's QB Reginald Davis.
I've been saving this for a week, and what a way to end a week. Everyone has been wondering what was TE Adam James' halftime speech during the Oklahoma game, that it was forced on the team and that this is all a media conspiracy. I've always said that I don't know because I'm not in the room. Anyway, you can see the speech at the 13 minute mark (or so), but you can also see players like QB Seth Doege, WR Alex Torres and C Justin Keown talk as well. I'm not a person that gets pumped up by rousing speeches, so I can't say that anything that Doege, Torres or Keown said was any better or worse than what James said, but I think I'm different than most people.
All I'm going to ask is that you don't get yourself banned. If you can't handle to comment, then don't comment at all, but I didn't want to not post (yea, double-negatives) post this. Anyway, you can make the judgement for yourself.

I guess this is my thought, Doege, Torres and Keown weren’t any more or less motivational to me.

I agree,
so why even make a statement about how rousing the nancy speech was? why was it even brought up? my guess is that every game someone has something to say……..the media made it sound like it was the Sermon on the Mount.
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
Remember, it was mainly the Doege that was asked and answered about James. Maybe Torres and I think that Tuberville said something about it after the fact, but not directly after the game. All Tuberville said after the game was that he had some good 3rd down catches, which he did. For Doege, it could have been motivational. I don’t know if the media saw anything at halftime.

The quotes from the vid just weren't that interesting...
everyone was basically saying the same thing… “we’ve gotta go out there and play hard, be physical, etc, etc, etc”… I get why they included those bits in the video… it’s just that none of it was exceptional… that is to say the James bit wasn’t any better or worse than any of the other dribble
Not really a big deal...
AJames’ bit was not really any different from anyone else. Actually looks a little staged, if you ask me. Quite a contrast from the Holiday Bowl video in which Leach breathes some fire!
The important thing for me is that James is now gone, and we won’t see him play for the Raiders anymore. That’s fine with me.
It may have had more meaning for the guys who were actually involved at the time.
For them, it may have been a much more emotional moment, they were winning a game that no one gave them credit to even be able to play competitive.
Personally, I don’t see much in it one way or the other.

Thanks for the video. Awesome game.
I am looking forward to this team getting back there next year. Too many injuries this year. Wish we could have made a bowl game for practice reasons. Need more time to learn systems and gel as a team.
Guns Up!
Do I know how to make everyone’s weekend or what?
I promise more football content next week. Will be getting up early all weekend and writing. Since men’s and women’s basketball is off for about a week, we’ll start digging into recruiting and last year. Who’s excited?

Time to focus on why our players are leaving, and why we only have 16 recruits left.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Well, again, that’s just not true. I’m actually working on a recruiting post and there’s actually 18 players that will be a part of the 2012 team. The 16 high school players, 1 prep player (Desimon Green) and 1 greyshirt (Thierry Nguema). That’s 18. Anyway, I know that you’re worried about the current class and you said that they’re dropping like flies, but even with the loss of Johnson and Okafor, Texas Tech’s class is still ranked in the teens to top 20. I know that I’ll probably get comments about how recruiting doesn’t equate wins, but you’re asking about why there are so many recruits left and although I’m not the most positive about this team, I’m also trying to be a realist. It’s not perfect, but it’s also not the end of the world.

Thanks for the update Seth, but I thought we had lost 4 recruits now.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Um. No. Just Johnson and Okafor. There may be more, but those are the only two that I know of right now.

Can't wait for your recruiting post so I can stay on top of it;
It has been extremely busy the last month, and my reading has been limited to mostly DTN.
"Oh, yeah. We don't even talk about Bowls much. We're so far away from being a team right now that can have a chance to compete in a Bowl." HC Tommy Tuberville.
Remember befor you get too low on decommitments...
OSU had 3, 4star recruits back out this week. You know they wonder the same thing, but it doesnt always have to do with the current winning situation. If I was the one being recruited, it would bother me, but not everyone is as worried about this year as they are on the future.
T think
D Wheeler has gone from a solid commit to a soft verbal. Not good.
Why would a kid join this program ?
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
Well, right now, there are 18 players that do. Again, I’m not trying to be s sunshine pumper, but I do think that these coaches can recruit their asses off and even with the loss of Johnson and Okafor, this is still a top 20 class, but I’m guessing that there is this perception that it’s falling apart.
Go Raiders . . .

And yes, I do not believe that winning recruiting equals wins. But that’s all I’ve got to hang my hat on right now as I try to be somewhat hopeful.
Go Raiders . . .

Winning recuting does not equate wins, there is a strong correlation between recruiting well and wins.
Losing recruiting certainly does not equate wins.
Recruiting rankings has no impact either way…the rankings are not what guides any coaching staff, rather the other way around.

I am hopeful, but afraid that we will lose ground between now and signing day. If my kid had multiple offers and I did not have strong ties to Tech, then I would have to ask the question…Why Tech?
"When you are right no one remembers, when you are wrong no one forgets."
The only advantage or selling point these coaches can make is that we suck exponentially right now and they could compete for a starting position on day one. That’s a hard sell when you have a staff of coaches that haven’t proven themselves after 2 seasons who are basically piloting this team. It’s not only going to take good athletes but ones that are willing to take a gamble at this point.

There is always sunshine, even behind the clouds the sun is shinning.
People who are very successful as entreprenuers are able to be so because they refuse to let the failures stop them, they have plenty on the way up.
I am not sure that they get all sunny but they find that they cannot stop. There has to be a lot of drive in those people but there may be also a lot of ability to see the prosepects, the opportunity, the vision of success more than what they see as failure.
Mike Leach is successful because he refuses to fail, it is not so much his charisma, although he may possess some of that, he can be abrasive and repulsive at times. He refuses to fail, he will not quit, he takes each failure as a challenge to over come and he is pretty open in his personality with that. His openness is what makes him appealing because most are not so opem. He is a lot like Bear Bryant, or Vince Lomaradi in his quest to excel, the personalities are not so congruent.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Of course, the sun could have burned out....
And we wouldn’t know it for about 8 minutes and 20 seconds (on average) because of all the sunshine it pumped out prior to that.

Sure wish the Spurs would make a free-agent move.
Who are they waiting for? The one they needed (Battier) just went to the Heat. They signed T.J. Ford (UT-ex) and Steve Novak, both for peanuts. Time to make a significant move forward. Myabe waiting to see who offers Jefferson so they know how much $$ they have left?

Weis to KU
Is Outstanding! I am a Tech grad, but lived in Florida for 8 years. Both of my daughters graduated from Florida, so by definition, I am also a Gator fan. This is great news for the Gator Nation. The offense in 2011 was one of the worst in college football (102 out of 120).
So the Gator nation is cheering today.
And for Tech, I don’t think Wies will be much of a threat at KU. Maybe I’m wrong. But he did not do that well at ND either. I just think this guy is a pro coach, not a college football coach. We’ve seen guys like Nick Saban that could not make the transition from college to the pro game…..well here is an example of a guy that cannot make the transition to the college game, of course, IMO.
The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.
I started visiting DTN regularly last summer
Before that, I hadn’t followed Tech off-season FB much except for what I saw in the paper. However, I quickly got caught up in it when I heard talk of:
- the best Tech recruiting class ever.
- an awesome new defensive scheme and coach from TCU.
- great new DLs, RBs and other players.
- the incredible impact one DL would have when he was “freed”.
- Doege would be Doege.
- a solid season (and bowl game) followed by championship contention in 2012.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out so well.
This off-season I will continue to read all the excellent articles that Seth C provides as well as the associated comments and posts. But my expectations will change considerably. It’s not that they will be lowered, I’m just not going to have any. (Big difference.)
I’m not from Missouri (though I’ve been there a number of times), but the 2012 team will simply have to “show me” on the field what they’re made of.
The good thing....
is all these coaches will be coaching for their jobs next season. The bottom can also be a good thing at times when used as a motivator. I have little expectations for this team at this time but I do expect a greater sense of survival and emotion next season since it’s do or die. I have little doubt that if don’t see at least 7 or possibly 8 wins Tuberville and company will be gone.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Facts are hard to come by, even on the internet.
What some will proclaim as fact may be or may not be, how does one know, how does one decide ?
Seth regularly talks about taking what is written with a grain of salt. There are crazy, broad swings of fervor demonstrated on the message boards and blog comments, even some of the blogs themselves. A lot of it is crowd mentality.
Enjoy the moment, the process of building a program from what it was / is to what its next level is, if there are wins celebrate, if not be disappointed and know that it is part of a process, just as was the win.
This is entertainment.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Thanks, Seth
for posting the video. It brings back good memories, and reenforces in my mind anyway, what this team was capable of when executing at a high level, and before all of the injuries to key players. Also, I had forgotten how M. Kennard played so well in that game. He seemed to disappear the rest of the season.
As for the halftime speeches, they all seemed like normal “lets keep kickin ass” kind of talk when you are the underdog in a game that you are winning at the moment. It also appears that Torres and Doege were the real leaders of the team.
One thing that really stuck out to me, was the comment from Tubs about how he and Neal agreed to keep the foot on the gas in the second half. This also proves to me just how much influence Tubs had on the offensive side of the game for the whole season. I don’t remember him saying anything about the defensive side of the game.
Two more comments before I close. Maybe this is old news, but I recently read that Tubs left Auburn with 5 million dollars in his pocket. Did he really need this job? I also read that in December, 2010, Tubs looked at the job at Miami after Randy Shannon was fired.
Tubs never had his heart in this job at Texas Tech.

The obsevation about Kennard is telling.
He is one example of a lot of the players who did well that day.
If nothing else, it is disappointing to see such a fine performance by a football team being a ‘one of’ event rather than an indicator of a step change improvement.

Straight from the Chancellor's Office
After the Baylor game, I sent a scathing e-mail to Chancellor Hance, never expecting him to read or respond. I got a phone call and follow-up e-mail from Hance’s assistant (Robert Giovannetti) this week, in which he assured me that Hance did indeed read all his e-mails and is well aware of the frustration fans/alumni are experiencing with the football program. The phone call lasted almost 30 minutes, and I was able to express my concerns and ‘vent my spleen’. He also said that he would assure me an appointment with Mr. Hance should I ever so desire. Regardless, I was impressed with the phone call, and was gratified to learn that Hance at least realizes there are a lot of unhappy people with the way EVERYTHING has been handled….from Leach’s firing, Craig/Adam James, and the debacle of our entire football season! Will Chancellor Hance take any steps to rectify??? I’m not taking any bets, but it was an encouraging conversation, and I personally needed that.
It just dawned on me that perhaps WE are the problem....
It just hit me after reading your comment………………why go to the chancellor? why not go to the president of the university? are we empowering hance too much? I know I blame him for everything including small pox, but we have determined on several occasions that it is actually the responsiblity of the president of Texas Tech for hirings, firing, etc.
Just a thought………………………i’m in my happy place.

Yes but who hired Bailey?
"All I wanted was my icream cone and my little cream soda, oh well, oh well, oh well" White Stripes
didn’t Robert Giovannetti work for FOX 34?
"You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game." Herm Edwards
I think so
I’m pretty sure he was the sports guy that gave all of the other scores during our games.
Are you sure it wasn't a recording?
It sounds a little scripted. Did he ever actually answer an individual question? Was the Tech fight song playing in the background?
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Actually...
Hance is the guy who has the power at Tech. President Bailey is under Chancellor Hance.
I know he is exhibiting the power, but
by the by-laws or what ever you call it, it is the President’s.
I think we are allowing hance to have the power……….(and it should stop immeditately)
i'm back bitches.....................deal with it.
Technically...
you are correct—-it should be Bailey’s responsibility for hirings & firings. But Hance is holding the power in his hands and will until he steps down or is removed.
I thought it was this way
Hance and the BoR are in charge of the Tech ‘system’ – the overall control of the main campus and all the out-lying facilities. I see this as master planners and coordinators, just like the Board of Directors of any corporation. These people can hire and fire the President, just like a Board of Directors can hire and fire the CEO, but they don’t get involved in hands-on daily control..
Bailey is in charge of all day-to-day operations on the main campus, including the hiring and firing of all personnel (incl football coach). As I have read, Hance and the BoR are prohibited from interfering (for all the good the rules do). If they don’t like the way the Pres is running the school, they fire him and get someone else. Or they intimidate him, threaten his job, and get him to be their puppet.
That is my main complaint with Bailey. He could have refused to fire ML since it was within his power to do so. Hance could have fired Bailey and got somebody else to fire ML, but that would have raised a real stink and would have exposed the over-reaching for what it was. In protecting his own job instead of the sanctity of the rules, Bailey became nothing more than Hance’s puppet. He chose his own interests over those of the University.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Technically you are right, but...
Remember the pecking order—BOR at the top, pretty much all powerful. Technically only the BOR, with Governor’s approval, can fire the Chancellor.
Chancellor—He oversees the entire TT System, including, Tech University, TT Medical School, Law School, Centers in El Paso, Amarillo, etc.
TTU President—Is just that. He is the head man for all things at TTU Lubbock. He makes all final academic decisions for the University—but not for Law School or Med. School, they have their own heads.;
Athletic Director—one of several administrative positions overseen by TTU President’s office. All decisions he makes must be also approved by the President, if they are solely in-house matters.
Which brings us to the supreme wrinkle—Football, B’ball coaches are not paid from the University budget that finances academics, so their contracts do not fall solely under the jurisdiction of AD and President. Since they are paid primarily with outside money (simiular to a large independent research grant) that approval must come from the BOR at the behest of first, the Pres., then the Chancellor. Pres. nor Chancelor alone cannot legally approve that money without BOR approval.—therefore, legally no football/b’ball coach can be terminated by the AD or Pres, but must be recommended by Chancellor to be acted upon by the BOR.
So..there you are.
..Chancellor to be acted upon by the BoR
IIRC, it was Bailey who actually signed the termination letter
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Right, since Leach was employed by TTU and Bailey was Pres., but the order to do so came from and had to be approved by BOR and Chancellor. Bailey has no authority to fire or hire the football coach independently—he can recommend, but the actual approval must be BOR. Even if Hance wants him gone, if the BOR says no, then he stays. BOR approves, sends approval to Hance who in turn directs Pres. to fire/hire coach in question.
Maybe that is the same Giovannetti...
that worked for Fox and was Levels’ radio partner on Tech Talk. Anybody know for sure?

Couldnt care less about James. We never have to deal with him again. What stood out to me was the NB speech. Boring. Lacks fire. I was not impressed.

It was a great game and I liked the highlights except for the minor halftime speech
I can’t believe that many people were still in the stands before the game with that much lightning.
Every play added up to one nice big win.
My favorites:
DJ Johnson strips the ball after a big OU reception. Dewhurst recovered.
Tre Porter interception.
why I have optimism for the future...
A true leader of the team was Graham Harrell, record while he was playing:
2006 : 8 – 5
2007 : 9 – 4
2008 : 11 – 2
Fake leader, Adam James, record while he was playing:
2008 : 11 – 2
2009 : 9 – 4
2010 : 8 – 5
2011 : 5 – 7
One led our team to better seasons each year as he improved, and the other “led” us in a different direction. (and I wouldn’t say that he “led” if our coaches, players and whoever else hadn’t told me so) I hope once 2012 begins that we never hear/speak of him again and that we get a real leader to lead the team in the right direction.
As a grad asst, you will likely see him on the sidelines.
